G4 Sleep mode Issues

Hello all,
I have a G4 Dual 1.25 running OS X.2.4. The problem is it goes into sleep mode every 10 seconds or so. Then I have to wait a minute for it to fall into (what I call deep sleep) "rem sleep" then I can awaken it with a key stroke or moving the mouse. But at best I have 10 seconds before it shuts down again into sleep mode. It even goes into sleep mode during SHUT DOWN!
I have reset the PRAM button on the board to no effect. As of last week it was running just fine. Friday it began doing this and I can find no reason for it. I have checked the sys pref and made sure the power save settings are at "never" sleep. It does no good.
I can be working (what I failed to mention is when I first boot up I may have 5 - 10 minutes before the first sleep mode) and the screen will go black.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey BrianW.
I can't say I know what's going on with your Mac, but I was having a problem where leaving my Mac idle would cause it to "freeze."
If I had the screensaver enabled, it would not go away after moving the mouse or anything, like it was doing up until about a month ago.
I tried disabling the screensaver, but still the "freezing" happened.
Sometimes I would be successful in getting out of this "frozen" state, but the hard drive would first sound like it was slowly dying.
I had read somewhere once, and although it didn't apply to me then, I thought of it when my problems started happening.
I downloaded this:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20791
It's freeware called Jiggler, and it jiggles your cursor based on how you set the parameters.
Here is a screenshot taken with Grab so you can see the options (there's no screenshot on the link I'm giving you):

As, you can see, I set Jiggler to jiggle at intervals of 40 seconds when the computer is idle.
This has successfully solved my problem temporarily, until I go to the Apple Store to find out the cause of this.
I have not had any freezing since, so I have nothing but good things to say about this app.
Hope everything goes well, let us know what happens.

• HP Pavilion DV6 Sleep Mode Issue After Windows 10 Upgrade (Goes To Sleep After 2 Min Of Inactivity)

I recently upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The upgrade went smooth and everything appears to be running fine except for one anoying glitch. After approx. 2 min of inactivity my laptop atuomatically goes into sleep mode and logs me out. I have checked all my power settings/sleep settings/screen saver settings...etc and I have completed all the windows updates. I don't see any timers anywhere that require adjustment. Any help would be appreciated. Note: The laptop wakes up fine with no issues.

Hello Konacha, Thanks for posting on the HP Forums!I have read your thread regarding the computer entering sleep mode, upon Administrative prompts or a restart. There isn't a lot that could be done, but by the end of it, the issue should be resolved  Hopefully, the simple fix is creating a new power plan. Your current power plan may be incorrectly configured. This Microsoft website can help with all the details of this task: Change, create, or delete a power plan (scheme)  If that doesn't help, then personally, I would reinstall the operating system. This will fix it, as it will address any software conflict or virus that could be causing this. First, you should backup your data. I will provide information on how to do that: Backing Up Your Files (Windows 7) Once this is done, it is safe to do the System Recovery. Here is some information on how to do this: Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 7) Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks again for posting, and have a great day! Mario

I have the same issue with a MBP from mid 2011 and 500GB SSD drive.
Thought maybe it was caused by dropbox, google drive, twitter, clocks or logmein, but even after clsoing all of these and putting it to sleep it still happens.
Found this on another site so please let me know if this is useful.  I haven't tried any of this but will soon.

• Z77A-GD65 power led on sleep mode issue

Hello,
Just finished putting up my new gaming system. It's my second MSI mobo build. Everything works just fine except for one thing - power led won't blink on sleep mode, it stays lit up. I'm not sure if this is an OS issue. I've tried installing Win7 on two HDDs, one's IDE sata mode, and AHCI for the other one. Didn't make any difference. Computer will turn off and go to "sleep mode" but the power led will stay on. My MSI P67 mobo blinks when on sleep mode. Also, for the Z77 mobo, the ACPI setting on the BIOS has S3 mode, and it has "blinking" and "dual light" option for the sleep indicator, neither of these function properly. Even on BIOS v10.3, power led is still lit up on sleep mode. Flashed it to 10.5, still the same result. Overclocked or default, still the same result.
I really need an expert to tell me what is wrong with it. Is it a BIOS glitch? Or a defect?
Thanks in advance.
Jon

the power logix thing was really sad. apple changed so much after 10.4.8 that there wasn't a viable way to patch the software.
That statement is precisely why I don't believe in blindly updating the OS, especially in a non-standard machine.
We can't expect third parties to support us forever, and it is shameful to break something that works fine, except that we updated the OS....
I think that any upgrade or modification to a machine or the OS greatly increases the risk of trouble or incompatibility with current configuration and "new" system files.
After all, the component or software could only be tested as far as the current OS version when the component or software was released.
Beyond that, we are all "beta testing".
Following a beta tester protocol, and applying updates to a cloned system drive first, is a prudent way to approach updates, and not only for older, heavily modified machines.
After 10.4.8 and moreso with Leopard, the focus is primarily on Intel architecture, not PPC architecture.
Like it or not, we are all updating to the abyss of the extinction of our machines, unless we can be satisfied with the last stable version of OS that works well with our hardware and software.
I wish they would include the latest pkgs at least with software update.
Yes, having individual packages, rather than lump "OS X 10.x.x" updates would be nice.
This way, one could update as one sees fit. That is to say, for example, fix the Quicktime, but leave my Network alone, etc., etc.
In all fairness, Apple does provide for some breakdown of updates, but I believe there is much room for improvement, especially, as you point out, with regard to the core services portion of the OS.
Until then, I'll leave Software Update disabled.......

• Power Mac G4 sleep mode issue using 10.5.8

Hello All,
If this is posted in the wrong discussion room, let me know.
I have a problem and I am not sure what to do at this point. For reference to understand the problem, I have a Power Mac G4 Dual 1.25Ghz MDD 2003(No FW 800) with an Apple Cinema Display. I also have a USB 2.0/FW 400 PCI card installed. I use this card to connect my external HD's.
The problem I am having is that the machine does not fall asleep properly using Leopard. When I manually put the computer to sleep, the monitor and external HD's shut off, but the fan stays on. When I try to wake the computer by hitting keys on the keyboard or moving the mouse, the computer will not wake the monitor or the External HD's. Furthermore, it freezes the computer when it is in the mode and the only way for the computer to function again is if I restart.
Until a month ago, I was running Tiger, 10.4.11, on my machine and had absolutely no problems with sleeping my Mac. I decided to go to Leopard, 10.5.8, and used the clean install option. I then used migration assistant to grab all my data and settings from a backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
Using 10.4.11, I would usually let the computer sleep after 15 minutes of idling. Now, under 10.5.8, the computer freezes after the sleep mode is attempted.
At first I assumed that the computer was preparing itself to sleep and might take a while. I decided to wait it out to see if the computer would eventually fall asleep. I waited an hour but the computer maintained the same status with the fans blowing and the front power button light staying lit. And, of course, the keyboard and monitor were not responding.
I read some forum discussions that suggested to people with similar problems to consider removing anything connected to the PCI card. It was suggested that the HD's were keeping the computer awake. I tried removing each HD one at a time to see if it was a particular HD causing the problem. With each configuration that I tried to put the computer to sleep, the same result occurred.
At this point, I am at a loss. I love my PowerMac and don't feel the need to upgrade as my most of my needs are met with this machine. This problem is not a deal breaker for me, but it is an annoying to have to restart after leaving the computer for a while. I know the other option is to shutdown and startup each time I leave the computer for any timeframe longer than 30 minutes, but is annoying and I don't know how bad it is for the computer to be shutdown and started again so frequently. If there is a fix to take care of this problem, I am willing to try it.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Maverick

• Sleeping mode issue with mountain lion

Hi,
I am using a MacbookPro with an external monitor. Since I've upgraded my OS system to Mountain Lion, whenever I close the lid, the Macbook is still running and doesn't enter into a sleeping mode like it used to do on SnowLeopard. Instead the external monitor will stay on and act as the main the monitor. Is there anyway this could be fixed?
Thanks

This is because while you've re-installed the system, you've preserved the user account. You need to do a  "clean" install meaning a reformat and install. If the Mac orginally shipped with Lion or ML you can redownload via Recovery Partition but if the Mac shipped with Leopard 10.5.x or Snow Leopard 10.6.x then you need the OEM discs that shipped with it. You can call Apple and they will send you the discs for a nominal charge.

• External USB 2.0 DVD writer - sleep mode issue

I have an Adaptec USB PCI card and hook up with an external USB DVD writer. When I try to standby (sleep mode) it, only screen blanks out, PowerMac G4 does not go to sleep, and no way to wake up or access to it. Only way is a hard shutdown.
The question is, do I need to disconnect this DVD writer first and do I need eject this USB 2.0 device first?
Thanks

Hi
Most Mac compatible USB 2.0 PCI cards seem to have problems supporting sleep. Typically either the computer won't sleep, or it will sleep but hang on wakeup, or it will sleep and wake up but the device will no longer be recognised until a restart. One solution seems to be to switch off any connected USB devices before sleeping the computer.

• MBP sleep mode issue

Purchased a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013).  Since I bought it I have noticed that sometimes the desktop does not appear after its in sleep mode.  I can see the mouse cursor and move it around but the screen is black.  The only way I can found to bring it back is to tap on the trackpad a bunch of times.  I thought maybe Yosemite would resolve it but that did not work.  It does not do it every single time but its enough to where its a pain.

Have you taken the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP? What you describe could be due to software or hardware - an Apple tech can test the machine caad give you a diagnosis. Hopefully you're still under AppleCare and have back-up? Be CERTAIN, before turning your machine over to any repair shop, that you have BACKUPS -> Most commonly used backup methods.
Good luck,

• Yoga 2 Pro - Sleep mode issue

Hi All,
I've been experience troubles with issues ralated to sleeping.
Sometimes it just sleeps well.
Sometimes my Y2P sometimes won't go sleep(insomnia???). The screen goes off but the fan doesn't stop and the keyboard backlit doesn't go off. And whatever I do won't wake it up in this circumstance, for example hitting a key on the keyboard, hitting the power button, or touch the screen. I have to restart to enter the OS. (FYI VirtualBox may cause this problem but I was not running it. I don't even have it installed.)
And sometimes it does go sleeping and can be waken up, but during the sleep the fan doesn't stop and the machine becomes very hot. This seems to happen only under the power manager high performance mode but I'm not sure. Twice I just closed my laptop and went to bed. and left the poor Y2P baking-hot overnight. As a result, the battery capacity estimate in the power manager is now 'Normal'. I believe it was 'Excellent' or 'Good' when I first received it. (FYI the capacity is now 54760mWh.)
I really love this machine. Yellow issue is not a killer but the sleep problem does troubles me a lot. I'm not able to return it because I just passed the 15-day return period. Any suggestion to solve those problem, folks?
-K

I have observed two related issues on my Yoga 2 Pro. In agreement with a later poster to this thread, it will occasionally shut down (or crash?) rather than sleep. This happens occasionally when I have a dozen apps up in a configuration that I'd really like to go back to rather than have to set up again. I'm guessing this issue, shutting down improperly, could be a problem getting an app or service to sleep properly, giving up, and dying. One of the reasons I upgraded to the Yoga 2 Pro is that my old Sony Vaio did this same thing and I assumed a new machine would have the quirks worked out. Perhaps it's a Windows problem, but still should be addressed.
I have also found several times that I will take my Yoga 2 Pro out of my bag after hours of sitting and the two lights indicating that it is running will be lit solid with the laptop hot to the touch. I have no idea why a machine would turn itself on with the lid closed, even if the power button is bumped (which is very unlikely with its small size in a padded bag). I'd love for anyone at Lenovo to address whether this issue is known, common, being looked at? I'm running a completely stock HP P7-1240 desktop except for an EVGA GeForce GTX 750 TI SC GPU. The GPU runs fine when the computer is up and running (which is odd because the forums have several other threads mentioning that the 700 series should be incompatible with my BIOS).
However, there are two main strange problems that have arisen since installing the GPU. One is that, whenever the computer enters sleep mode, it refuses to wake back up properly. It seems to me that the computer activates but does not send any signals out from the back panel (at the very least, no video signal because my monitors stay blank). On a rare occasion, it will wake back up properly, but at least 90% of the time, it needs to be restarted. Upon restart, sometimes the same issue occurs (no video output), and the computer needs to be restarted a second time before it will boot up again.
This leads to the second problem. When starting, the computer goes to a black screen listing basic computer specs (see attached photo. At this screen, the computer does not respond to any input.  It proceeds to beep 3 times, all the same length and pitch spaced about 30 seconds apart. After the third beep, the screen goes black and then the computer boots up normally with no further odd behavior.
Without the GPU, none of these issues happen. At the very least, not regularly.
I have seen another thread mentioning that, although the HP support page for my desktop does not list it, there is a BIOS update for my motherboard that has fixed issues relating to more modern GPU's. By nature of it being a BIOS update that does not (appear to) officially support Windows 7, I'm hesitant to move forward with that potential solution.
Although I'm planning to build myself a new computer from scratch at some point, I was hoping to at least get another year out of this machine, if not 2.  While this issue doesn't appear to be immediately threatening the stability of the computer, I can't help but think that this is an issue I should iron soon to avoid future issues (not to mention it would save me a fair amount of electricity to be able to enter sleep mode on a regular basis).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hello @johnmwalker,
I understand that you are having some issues with your HP Pavilion p7-1240 Desktop PC waking up from sleep mode. I am not sure how much can be done for the delay on your startup with an OEM BIOS you are limited in what you can do and since your graphic card works I think you would be better off not messing too much with the BIOS at this point. The one thing I would try is going into the BIOS using the HP Support document:BIOS Setup Utility Information and Menu Options, and under Advanced > Power-On Options set POST Messages to Disable and POST Delay (in seconds) to None.
Now the waking from sleep mode issue  could just be the hybrid sleep setting causing you an issue with sleep mode. Use the following steps to disable hybrid sleep:
Step 1. Click Start
Step 2. Click Control Panel.
Step 3. Click System and Security
Step 4. Click Power Options
Step 5. Click High Performance from Power Options
Step 6. Click Change plan settings
Step 7. Select Change advanced power settings
Step 8. Click the plus (+) sign next to Sleep
Step 9. Click the plus (+) sign next to Allow hybrid sleep
Step 10. Select Off from the drop-down menu
Step 11. Click OK
Please re-post if you require additional support. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

• T400 sleep mode problem

Hi, I got my new T400 last week, prett happy. However, I found an annoying problem with T400 entering sleep mode. Randomly, it fails to go into sleep mode. It just hangs there with no response at all from keyboard and mouse, the "sleep moon" light doens't turn on either. I have to hold the power button to forcely shut it down and reboot. Quite annoying.
I did some research on this forum, somebody suggested reinstall the Power Manager and its driver, I tried that and the problem remains. BTW, My video driver is also up to date.
Then I called Lenovo/IBM Atlanta support team, and was told to try to update my BIOS. So I preceeded with that too. Because I have Vista64, I have to download an iso image and burn a bootable CD with Roxio Creator (preinstalled on T400), and changed the BIOS startup sequence to boot from the internal CD drive. Somehow, T400 couldn't boot from the CD I burned with the BIOS update iso image. So I am back to suqare one.
Someone in this forum also suggested it might be a motherboard problem, but the tech rep I talked with didn't mention that.
Any suggestions on this sleeping mode issue? Or if you could help with the bootable CD with BIOS update? Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I have to ask the usual iso burn question: are you burning it as a file, or as an image?  If your cd is readable under windows (or whatever) and has a file on it called xxx.iso, you probably used the wrong burn option.
No offense, but this is the usual problem.  If you are already handling this, sorry about the noise...

• Macbook not starting when in sleep mode

So my white 13 inch macbook was in sleep mode for a couple hours and usually I just press either the enter/return button or the power/startup button to wake the computer but for the past two times, it wasn't starting up unless I held the power/startup button until it completely turned off. I then had to completely restart the computer. And that was the only way I could get it to turn on. In the past, like I said, everything worked fine when I hit the enter or power button. Has this happened to anybody else's macbooks? I guess from now on I'll pretty much always have to shutdown the mac completely when not using it.

If you read the material at those links it explains everything. It's very simple. It won't wipe the drive or lose files.

• GX630 and Vista x64 Ultimate Sleep Mode

I have MSI GX630 and having trouble to wake my notebook after sleep mode at Vista x64 Ultimate Sp1 edition
When my notebook goes to sleep mode everything ok.power led is blinking. When I press Power Button fan starts wireless led is ok but screen is  black. And I m not able to start system till I unplug/plug AC and Battery
Msi Service in Turkey checked my notebook.they unpluged/pluged motherboards battery to reset bios ( I think :D )and flashed bios back to 1.02 ( i was using 1.05 ).But same result. They said they don't have any idea:)
There is no problem in 32 bit vista home edition
I tried many Vga drivers. Now using moded 181.20
I tried all bios versions released on msi website.
All other drivers are up to date.
There are lots of users having same problem
I will be glad if anyone can help me.
Thanks

They wouldn't, not officially. NVIDIA started to support gamers with laptops and will do it in future, regularly. But the real problem is, that most of other vendors have their GPUs supported in those drivers and MSI doesn't, it's completely missing NVMI.INF file. Note, that there is no universal INF file, but many of them named after vendors according to the NVIDIA's filename scheme.
But beta status has not to do with the fact those drivers are working and MSI products simply aren't there.
Other side of the issue is, that MSI is selling so called gaming laptops and didn't updated the drivers since, well, July 2008 (GX630, ForceWare 176.10) or September 2008 (GX620, Forceware 176.60). It just cannot keep up with game releases and bug fixes for new games included in every ForceWare release. This kind of support is simply not enough for the respective audience.
Don't understand me wrong - the products are excellent and even my brother just ordered GX630.
Back to the issue - guys, try to use newer drivers for GX620 if you have MSI laptop with NVIDIA - and yes, even when it's not GX620. All NVIDI GPU's should be supported, check the list:

Those are probably the newest official NVIDIA drivers from MSI.
Other thing you can try to deal with the sleep mode issue is to disable PowerMizer in driver's control panel. I cannot try it by myself (have only ATI and Intel VGA here), but found it on LaptopVideo2Go site.

• Sleep mode/freezes

Recently, when I put my mbp in sleep mode. After I turn it back on, the screen turn black with only the mouse point available for me to scroll! Sometimes it goes back to my screen and everything is okay. Sometimes it just blackouts.
I NEED HELP! Thanks for those who replies!

Someone else posted something similar...
But there's may be related to Real Player...but my guess would be that is a wake from sleep mode issue that apple needs to address.
Try F2 to wake MBP
