G4 Sony CDRW in a G3
Hello
I've got hold of a Sony CD-RW (CRX155E) drive from work, it was in a G4 running on System 10.3. It fits in O.K. and the system profiler recognises it, but it's completely dead! Any advice much appreciated.
MM (Jim),
Jumpers settings from one drive to the next will vary from drive to drive, so that can not be a reliable way of setting those darn things unless it's the same make and model, and I have a Sony model: APLCDCRX140E.
The jumper setting(s) however will really only designate whether it's a Master, Slave or Cable Select.
If your jumper setting is set as the slave, and is plugged into the master on the ribbon, then it would not work. If your CD-R/W has a Cable Select setting, then the ATA ribbon connection would decide which of the two options (master or slave) the device would be, you might run into trouble down the road... but I doubt thats the case here.
I have mine set up as Master/Master in the respect that it's plugged into the zero "O" ATA slot, and is set as the zero "O" device within that Master/Slave configuration for the ATA ribbon — the primary hard drive is actually the Slave to the CD-R/W, just so that in case of an all out emergency where everything fails, there would be no question in my mind that I could always start up booting from a CD. I have run into people along the way where they have changed/upgraded their CD-drives and couldn't boot from a CD, but I do believe that that was more of an incompatability issue within the drive itself rather than how it was configured within the master/slave capabilities... but with that said, I just wanted to be double-sure that I wouldn't be one those who couldn't. And it's always worked just fine.
So unless your CD-R/W is set up as a slave and plugged into the ATA's master ribbon connection — it shouldn't really matter too much. But I just wanted to mention it just in case that may have been that way.
You having the latest of the Rev. ROM DIMM ($77D.45F2), you don't need to worry about THAT as being of any concern within the slaving. Only if you happened to have the Rev. A would you not be able to slave, as I understand it.
Be sure also that the power cable is also appropriately plugged into the CD-drive as well — and not just the ATA ribbon.
I'll check back in again in a little while to if you reply.

865PE NEO2 FSIR fails memory tests
This is the second MB that I've had this problem with, so something is causing them to fail. Here's the story:
New install, 865PE Neo2 FSIR + P4 2.6GHz 800MHz FSB, 2 x Crucial PC3200 256MB DDR, everything seems ok, XP installs with no problems.
About a month down the road I'm plagued by sudden reboots, Microsoft Error Reporting says RAM, says to DL and run it's DOS memory check utility. I get the utility, create bootable CD and run the utility, computer fails all RAM checks. I pull each RAM stick in turn and re-run the check with each stick separately, still fails all tests. Shortly after this, the board refuses to POST. Ship the board back to New Egg for replacement.
Installed replacement MB with 4 x 256MB Crucial PC3200, Microsoft DOS memory check program passes, no problems. About 2 weeks later I run into minor instability so I run the same memory check again, the board fails all tests????? I pull all Crucial memory sticks and put in a test stick of Corsair XMS 3200; same result, failure of all memory tests.
At this point, WinXP still runs, but this is the same pattern that the other board showed, right until it quit altogether.
It occurs to me that I DID flash BIOS to 1.9 between the time I first tested the RAM and got a pass and the time I tested and got a failure, could this be a coincidence? I can't remember if I updated the BIOS on the first board or not, so this may mean nothing.
System Specs:
MSI 865PE NEO2 FSIR
P4 2.6GHz, 800MHz FSB (all defaults, no overclock, Vantec HS)
Crucial CT3264Z40B.8T PC3200, CL3 256MB (2 Modules)
Crucial CT3264Z40B.8T2 PC 3200, CL3 256MB (2 Modules)
(Tested with same results with single Corsair CMX512-3200C2PT 512MB)
Antex True Power 430W PS
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
All PCI slots open
Seagate 120GB System drive, 7,200RPM primary master
IBM 30GB drive, 7,200RPM primary slave
LiteOn DVD ROM secondary master
Sony CDRW secondary slave
2 x IBM 30GB drives on Promise PATA.
I know I'm probably gonna have to RMA this board, but I'd really like to know what is causing this so I can avoid it next time.
If anyone has any ideas I'd sure appreciate it.

Suspect it is the reallocation for the P4 EE that is the issue. Reason is that Memtest86 has been running on that box for 9 hours now with NO error. However, it also shows only 104K of reserved memory. My other 865 board with onboard RAID (an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe) shows 687K reserved. So either the ASUS is wasting a lot of space, or the MIS is no longer correctly indicating the amount of memory reserved by the BIOS (including the Promise BIOS) at startup. Then Microsoft's utility is not correctly scanning. But Memtest, which probes for the "correct" setting, is. (The Memtest86 version is 3.0, and the test was done with the Promise enabled and drives attached (so the BIOS loads) and all the other setup was as it would be normally (standard IBOS options, etc.)
So who's right? And if MS' tool has the problem, does that indicate Windows XP reads memory the same way? Hmmm...
Hmm, I haven't tried reverting BIOS, but I'm typing this on the affected machine (which Memtest 86 says is fine) with only the two RAM chips it likes and so far no problems; I've run PCMark4 and 3DMark4 benchmarks all night and no problems, it was still happily churning away on 3DMark this morning. I guess either one of the Crucial sticks it doesn't like is bad or Crucial changed something in a revision to the chips it doesn't like.
Just a FYI, the Crucial sticks it DOESN'T like are CT3264Z40B.8T2
The sticks it DOES like (at slow or fast performance, forget about turbo or ultra turbo) are CT3264Z40B.8T
Both pairs are PC3200, CL3, 256MB DIMM's, single sided.
I think you're right about Microsoft's RAM tester being buggy, I can't believe ANYTHING could run if the RAM was actually giving the errors it shows, EVERY test shows things like "expected result 11111111 actual result ff1e0001" The Microsoft tester does run fine on the other 5 computers here; a mix of laptops and desktops; none using this board. It also ran on this board when it was installed, I guess the BIOS upgrade must be the cause.

Kt4v possible problem with bios 1.8 and hd
Any Idea anyone with this one.
system running well till the other day when hd went very slow even after defrag, install bios 1.8 and reset the bios and adjusting it for my setup. Come to check my harddrive with maxtor powerdiag 3.04 and could not find the drive or any other drives connected. In the bios setup the drive is present. I removed all drives, cdroms, etc except the maxtor main hd and tried again with the same result. After placing in an ata100 controller card in to a spare pci slot and plugged the hd on to it, that the software sees the drive. The test finished and show the HD to be fine.
The question is do I have a problem with the onboard contoller or with the new bios or both.
When I first got this MB I did the same test with the original bios and the hd connected to the MB controller and the software had no problem seeing that and other drive connected.

I can't sell a 15000$ storage system that doesn't recognise the CPUs installed. The customer would laugh and tell me to come back with a supported system.
Isn't this a VERY valid reason for wanting updates? Even if it only is an updated CPU list?
The only reason I tried this MSI board is that it was the only one available with my retailer at the time I bought it with 3 PCI-X 100Mhz slots. Maybe I should go with a Tyan Thunder next time. Tyan at least show some activity. -
Problems with cd rom drivers on win 98
Ok I have a MSI 6524 mb and a sony cdrw drive, an LG cr rom and 1st gen dvd that dont like to read cdr's. I have formated my hd and put win 98 se on it, but it will not load the cd rom drivers , and because of that, the IDE drivers wont install cause they come on later from win 98. I've check all manufactures web sites and non offer a cd rom driver cause they are all plug and play.
Now I have a windows ME boot disk that does have the cd rom drivers but I keep getting an error message about disk cache utilitly being on my hard drive when I use the ME boot disk Is there a way to use the ME and not have errors? I know there is a way to load cdrom drivers in DOS, but im Super stuid with DOS and even with instructions from the net I cant get it right. Can somone please offer me some very GOOD instructions on what to do.Well I tried that, but only the Windows Me boot disk seems to have drivers for my cd rom. I even tried to use a patch that adds 4 more cd rom drives to my win 98 boot disk, but I couldnt understand how to do that. I think it was a bad patch.
The main reason I'm redoing my Hd is because everytime I try to use any thing , any program, run anything, it will work for a few seconds and then freeze to a blue screen that says "windows has had a fatal error, press any key to continue or press control alt del to restart" So I push any key and explorer has performed an illegal opperation, so I click on close, and then another program does the same thing , and then another, til there is nothing left running, or the comp is completely frozen. And then everysingle time I reboot , the same thing happens. -

This pic shows that the 12V rail is 18A which is 2A more than the one you have now...scrimping isn't going to make it better...
Enermax or Antec is the way to go...they both crank a lot more amps out of their rails than most...

I am afraid I have come to a dead end! I have read the manual and the excellent guide in this forum. But I am stuck! I am trying to set up a raid 0 array .
The system I have is
865PE Neo2 FIS2R
Intel P4 3.2Ghz 800FSB
2 x 120Gb Western Digital SATA HDD
1 x 512Mb Kingston Memory
1 x Floppy
1 x Sony CDRW
1 x 64Mb Graphics
I have not got windows installed yet - both HDD are new and blank. I have them both connected via sata cables to SATA3 & SATA4. In BIOS I can see both HD on IDE 3 and 4, I can see the floppy and CD drives. In integrated peripherals I have integrated peripherals set as follows:
Native mode
sata only
sata active = yes
pata active = yes
pata channel selection - both
Configure sata as Raid 0 = No????? - is this correct?? – I have tried this as yes with the same results.
Onboard promise IDE is set a Raid
I save and reboot - using the control F keys does nothing. I can't enter Promise BIOS - what I get is the message flashing by ''no disc attached to fasttrack controller. The Bios is not installed.
Boot failure insert boot diskette in drive A press any key to continue
It is obviously trying to boot from the floppy - Control F does nothing. I expected to get a screen taking me into Promise set up. Do I have to install Windows XP first and then use the MSI cd to install raid drivers. Sorry if I sound dim but neither the MSI raid manual or the forum guide make this clear for me Sata 1&2 = intel controler
Sata 3&4 = promise controller
someone didnot read the manual OR guide. -

I also uninstalled the driver for my onboard soundcard, and disabled it at the bios, still no change .
Could this be PSU problem?

Force Optical Power Calibration before burn is turned on in the preferences
I was able to burn cds until I updated to version 7. Now it looks as though it is burning, but when you eject the cd, all files disappear! I want to turn the above mentioned preference off, so I can try slowing down the drive speed. However, I can not find where to do so. I searched the registry and looked in the program files to see where the option is being stored, but I was unsuccessful. Please advise.
This is the current info. Its wierd, after I burn and leave the cd in the drive, I could run a diagnostic and it will say there are files on the cd and no error reported. After I eject and re-read -- the disc is empty, but still no error thrown.

New computer vs card reader/USB ***Solved***
I'm not too sure what forum I need to address this to. Not sure if it's an issue of bios, OS or hardware. It's very weird, wherever it belongs.
I just built a new computer (see specs below) and I have a HP Officejet 6300 with a front USB port combined with four different card reader ports. I don't use these ports and don't need them. When I installed this thing to my last computer a few months ago (an Aopen AX3S with PIII 933 MHx Coppermine) it wasn't a problem and didn't interfere with booting. After a few days, I uninstalled this pseudo drivecard reader because it interfered with my preferred drive assignment letters. I uninstalled it and it was gone. End of story.
Now I have the new computer that also has an AMI bios. I built it last Friday and reinstalled and updated all my software over the weekend, including the HP printer/scanner/fax software and drivers. I never connected the Officejet until I needed to print something yesterday. No problems there.
Since connecting this USB fed HP device, whenever I reboot this machine, it can take forever to get past the POST. First, it initializes the USB controllers, then displays the memory and locates my USB hub and a mass storage device. After that it proceeds though autodetecting my all my hard disks and optical drives. Then it starts autodetecting USB mass storage devices and begins hunting a "Device #0 :" It doesn't find it and tells me "0 mass storage devices found and configured" and something about NVRAM.
The time required for this is variable and may take either a fraction of a second or 28 seconds or 8½ minutes to reach this point in the POST. I never know what it will do until it happens. 8½ minutes is a long time to wait for signs of life.
In devicemgmt.msc this thing shows up both as as "Storage volume/Generic volume" and in my Disk drives category as "HP Officejet 6310 USB Device". In "My Computer" it shows up as Removable Disk H:, as "HP Officejet 6310 USB device".
I've tried numerous times to uninstall this device but it comes right back like a bad weed. Sometimes it tells me "Windows has found new hardware", sometimes not. Regardless, it always comes back and I can't get rid of it, unlike with the old computer. Once I unintalled the thing in that computer, it was simply gone.
I can disable the device either in "Device Manager" or "My Computer" but then it always takes 8½ minutes to POST the first boot and 28 seconds thereafter.
When I disable the thing, it turns into a disabled "HP Officejet 6310 USB Device" in devmgmt.msc under Disk drives and disappears as a "Storage volume/Generic volume" and disappears in "My Computer".
If I unplug the USB cable from the Officejet or switch it off, everything is good.
I can't find anything in the BIOS that would explain this behavior but have tried resetting it anyway. I've pulled the plug and battery, discharged the capacitors by cycling the power button and cleared the CMOS numerous times. This hasn't helped.
Anybody know how to deal with this? It's really a pain in the butt.
Otherwise the new computer is great. Scary fast and stable as a rock.
(I don't really need to know HP makes junk. I'm aware of that. I bought one quite a few years ago with a replacement policy. It broke so they gave me another one. They keep breaking and I keep free replacements.)

I think I fixed it last night. Not sure exactly how it happened but I did another cmos clear with a CF card in the HP, left it unplugged for quite some time and disabled quick booting. After that, POST quit looking for the HP. Now it is doing as it should and not finding or even looking for a printer as a potential boot drive when starting up. It does appear in Windows exactly as it's supposed to and occupying one of my drive but I'm going to leave it alone now.
Changing legacy support had no effect on anything. I tried that last night. It returned to its default of Auto with reset of the cmos. That's where it is now.

Hi Svet,
I ran the HP USB disk tool on my Corsair flash drive and installed the MSIHQ BIOS tool on it with the v. 1.5 update. It worked like a champ. I had to jump through some hoops again to make the bios quit looking for the HP card reader at the POST but got it done. Everything is currently working just as it should.
With the new bios, I have the option to change the multiplier. I'll probably wait a while before I start goofing with that but I just wanted to let you know that everything appears to be good with my new computer.
Thank you so much for all your help with this.
Best,
Don

Let's start with the support page for your computer. Go there and get the update labeled "Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility". Also if you're using any of the Sonic Solutions applications, install and run those updaters as well.
If that doesn't help, let try a quick experiment:
On the start menu, click on "run". in the space it provides enter "regedit" without the quotes. This will open the registry editor.
Find the heading HKEYLOCALMACHINE. Click on it.
Find the heading SYSTEM inside it. Click on it.
Find the heading CurrentControlSet. Click
Find the heading Control. Click
Find the heading Class. Click
Find the heading that begins {4D36E965- Click
Go up to the Registry menu and select "Export Registry File... command. Make sure the "Selected Branch" radio button is checked and save that off somewhere that you can find it.
Delete the key named LowerFilter.
Then reboot, and see what iTunes does.
To get the system back to its previous state. Run Regedit again and use the Registry menu -> Import Registry File... command and select the file that you saved off in the first section. -

[875P Neo Series] trouble shooting assistance

thanks in advance...
weezi would not even try to power up the sys untill the psu is in place,if the cpu failed and needs a warranty replacement i dont think you will get any fuss out of intel,BUT you may have other problems looming that may appear at some time or another, lack of AMPERAGE {not voltage} can have a very NEGATIVE affect on the sys as a whole,if it is a mobo failure you should be ok with that also,it just takes a long time during a RMA process since it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to complete each, mark it up to a learning experence, the PSU {imo} IS the most important piece of hardware that you or anyone will purchase for a computer !

does anyone use the dlink lights at all...and is it a reliable troubleshooting tool
,i donot use it but many here do and find it very usefull. also look here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=34535.0;all
also the battery can have a bad contact which can cause a no post, also the psu connector pins can become dislodged and push back and cause arching {because of current jumping} that can be harmfull to the pins and sockets.
hope this helps! -
[VIA] K8mm-v kept restarting OS
Hi
Hope you can help me with this. I have already done a search on the forum but can't find any related articles on it. I have a problem with this new K8MM-V motherboard that i have just bought. It kept restarting the Win XP OS after I installed the VIA chipset drivers. No problem with the raid, sound and VGA drivers that came with the bundled CD though. My current config is as per below. Tried to find updated chipset drivers to resolve this but none were available.
OS: Windows XP
M/B: K8MM-V
CPU: AMD Sempron 2600
Ram: Kingston DDR400 512mb
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 160GB 7200rpm
CDROM: Sony CDRW/DVD combo 52x32x52x16
Remove slowdowncpu.exe or dont install intek chipset update on msi driver disk!.
Well this is on the msi driver cd on the k8vmm board series we started selling these and i noticed the same thing it crashes systems that use semperon cpu's.
Its in the intel inf update the 1st item on menu on the driver disk, msi might have not put it there but it is there none the less, i had an argument at work, i have build over 20 of these system all same thing it becomes highly unstable using a semperon cpu the program is not designed for it.
The fix just remove it using msconfig or hackthis and the system runs fine, i had a bet at work that it WAS on the driver disk setup a hd right out of the wrapper using xp home pulled up msconfig after installing the itel inf chipset update driver there it was under inf/msi/ dir.
