G4 Titanium - TV as display?

I have a G4 titanium with no screen that my son was using for movies paired with an apple cinema display. The G4 is working fine, but has no screen. I wiped the HD and then verified it. The cinema display was sold and I am trying to sell the G4. A potential buyer asked me if it will work with an LCD TV - for entertainment similar to using the cinema display. Can anyone tell me how I should answer the buyer?

there are several Titanium models, one i called "DVI" and uses DVI display connector, looks like most Titaniums have "S-video" connector and VGA connector.
if you can connect your PowerBook to a VGA computer monitor (PC monitor is fine), then it'll work with an LCD TV with VGA input.

  • Titanium 400/500 displays compatible with Gigabit 550/667 models?

Hi. Just wanted to ask if anyone's sure re. compatibility of the first-generation Titanium 400 and 500 model displays with the second-gen Gigabit ethernet models? I've written in another post here re. a problem with my Gigabit 667 screen: 3 horizontal bands, each 1/3 of screen, with bottom third all white, while desktop shows up in top 2 bands. Weird.
I have a couple of Titaniums with broken logic boards, though displays and hinges seem ok. These are from G4/500 Titaniums.
I've found vague mentions of compatibility on the web, with some saying it "should" work; but does anyone have the "definitive" answer? It's a tough replacement job, so would like to be sure before tackling it.
    Many thanks.

Hi, you need to be careful if you need parts for a 'second' generation tibook as there are two versions of the 667MHz. The VGA and the DVI which can be determined by the monitor port in the back.
The 400/500/550/667 are interchangeable only with the VGA version and can be identified by the white/pink leads to the backlight. If you have white/grey these are the DVI version and will not work with VGA tibooks.
Doing the monitor swap can be a real pain, if you have forceps this will be useful for unplugging your backlight leads if you don't want to do a full strip down. If you go the 'lazy' route I would highly recommend you tape the end of your ribbon connector once you unplug it from your motherboard. If you don't you stand a good chance of cracking the plastic ribs that run between the wire leads. Also be super careful when pulling this wire out the back.

I've successfully overclocked my Q6600 on my msi p6ndiamond board, but I have a weird issue. If I start up my computer from a cold start, it will almost always crash. After restarting however, it will work just fine. I don't know what this is a symptom of. It's like my computer needs to warm up before it can use the overclock. Anyone know what the issue might be?

I've also noticed that my computer takes a bit longer to start up than it used to... once things are running in windows everything is normal and often faster than before, but initial start up is a tad sluggish.
Thats mostly a sign that something isnt getting enough juice, same goes for:

Try raising NB step by step and see how that goes, did the trick for me on my P6N Platinum.
Dont go to far, otherwise other boot issues can occur, like not being able to boot, only if power is completely drained from motherboard (at least thats the case with my board  )
Dont touch SB, no use in upping voltage on that, its only a connection to HD, keyboard etc, low profile stuff, if im correct.

  • Broken display on titanium

my friend has an old titanium powerbook but the display is not working anymore. i want to connect it to another old ibook g4 and use this as a display so that he can manage the titanium disk. Is this possible and how do I go about it. I also use a macbook pro if this makes things easier. the cost of refurbishing the titanium is high and probably not worth the effort.
    many thanks.

Connect them with a FireWire cable and start up the PowerBook with the T key held down. You may be able to specify the PowerBook's internal drive by starting the iBook while pressing Option.

  • REMOVING THE DISPLAY FROM A TITANIUM POWERBOOK

The display on my 15" Titanium Powerbook no longer works. The laptop works fine if I connect it to an external monitor. Does anyone if you can remove the display from the unit totally and still use the powerbook like a desktop computer connected to a monitor?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I have a friend who did the same with an iBook, and managed to get it to work. Given the trickery of how the cables are hooked up, if you are at all queezy, have an authorized service technician help you out. You wouldn't want to expose the wires to moisture and dust that normally don't get exposed.

  • Replacing PowerBook Titanium 15" display

I've recently started trying to repair several PowerBook Titanium 15" Mercury and Onyx models with various problems, including the notorious broken hinge problem that requires replacing the display. As various posts here have noted, the video display wires are very delicate and easily damaged, especially when trying to slip the connector out through the opening in the case where the hinge attaches.
I was so nervous about this that I decided to try spreading a thin layer of silicone rubber adhesive over these wires where they spread apart to attach to the connector. My idea was to provide a little more protection than the Kevlar insulation, a little additional insulation around and between wires, and a little additional mechanical strength without making them much more difficult to fit through the opening. I thought of silicone rubber adhesive because it dries quickly, is flexible, and can withstand high temperatures.
I've tried this on two displays now without creating any difficulties for myself. I can't be sure the thin adhesive coating really helps, but at least it makes me feel better when I'm threading the connector through the opening.
As other posts have suggested, the iFixIt repair guides are a big help in replacing displays, and I've also found the RadTech Glide hinge adjustment kit mentioned here from time to time an excellent investment.

Sounds like it could be the LCD cable as you suggest. Might be good to take it to an Apple centre and see what they think, good luck.
Hopefully this is helpful or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!

  • NVidia Quadro NVS 285 and 30" titanium cinema display

Does the nVidia Quadro NVS 285 (or 55/280 PCI) support the old 30" titanium cinema display? I'm running the display to an HP tower via DVI-D dual link adapted to a DVI dual link (DMS-59), and I can't get it to work. Can anyone help?

I wish I could offer some advice. Instead, I am seeking your thoughts on the new card. Did the X800XT work? I have the same machine as you and am looking to upgrade my 64mb geForce 5200 card with either the 9600Pro for Mac or PC or the X800XT card (by Radeon).
Though it seems like production of the X800XT card has slowed to a crawl, I've found some for sale online. Just nervous, as I've read mixed things!
    Your opinion would be welcomed.

  • Are Titanium displays and Aluminum screen units interchangeable?

I had a friend who had a titanium powerbook and I remember it being similar to my aluminum powerbook. In fact, I didn't know there were two models. Anyways, I dropped my powerbook and need to replace the screen.
Does anyone know if these two are compatable as long as they are SVGA and the same size as the broken one is?
Also is it easier or better to get just the screen or the whole peice with the backside and all?

They're different resolutions, and the aluminum books have a totally different hinge than the titanium powerbooks. They're also a slightly different size (1/8 of an inch i think). needless to say, they aren't interchangeable. They may even have different interface types depending on the manufacture date of the tibook (DVI and VGA)

  • PBG4 Titanium Onyx - Screen black and sleeps when display moved slightly

My PowerBook G4 has been going to sleep when I do any of the following:
    1) Move the display — _every time_
    2) Touch the lower row of keys on keyboard — sometimes
    3) Bump the computer — _most of the time_
Sometimes when I try to wake it from sleep, the sleep light will stop "breathing," but the screen is still black, although I can see a very faint image. (...my forum research has told me this is the backlight turning off). A slight movement of the display will bring the backlight back on, but of course the PB goes to sleep.
I have reset the PMU and the PRAM.
I am hoping that the backlight problem is associated with the sleep problem, and one fix will solve them both, but I guess that goes without saying.
Would prefer to fix it myself rather that take it to a repair shop; I am fairly adept at repairs, but don't want to get in over my head.
    Thanks Forum Gurus!

    *+It WAS!+*
It was a classic case of the Orange Ribbon Cable Issue/Fix.
I was discouraged at first because the addendum to your article suggested that this did not apply to the *_550 MHz TiBook_*. But the ribbon looked the same as your pictures, and when I looked at the ribbon +with a loupe+, I could see where the insulation was worn away. I put tape everywhere I could fit it and the PB is working fine. I can totally move the display and pound on the keys with impunity. (I use the word "pound" figuratively, of course).
Now that I know how to remove the bottom case and the HD, I am definitely going to replace the HD.
Do you know what the best and most capacity HD I can install?
Thank you abundantly for your expertise and that very helpful website.
    Cheers,
    Paul

  • Warped Titanium Display

I've had my PB for a year now and I am seriously questioning the 'warping' of these screens.
I was told that it happens, but once someone else said they noticed it, I thought it might not be normal.
When it is open it's not noticeable, however when closed - I can push down the top corners a significant amount pivoting off of the center latch.
Other PB's of the same generation that I've seen have almost none if any warping/bending.
    What's the deal?
    15" PowerBook, 1.67 ghz G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 gb RAM

I would guess the pressure and curvature of your back might do this but I'm not sure that a back pack is the issue at all.
But, mine does this "warping" to creating a lift at the outside of the front corners when closed of approx. 1/16 of an inch or so and I don't use a back pack. I'm considering putting a slim piece of something, 1/16 thick and maybe a couple of inches long along the front edge and carefully applying pressure on these lifted corners to see if I can GENTLY correct this warp.
    OK, what ya think??

  • Mini Display Port to HDMI sound problem

I have an iMac 11, 2 (MacOS X, 10.6.8).  The Mini Display Port is supposed to be able to carry sound, (using a Monoprice Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Converter with Audio, and HDMI cord supporting 3D, and Audio Return.)  I am playing downloaded movies with VLC, which works fine on the computer.  When I try to burn DVD disc using Toast Titanium, I get video, but no sound.  So, I figure I can watch movies on my Vizio 42" TV screen with the MiniDisplayPort to HDMI cord.  I learned that to use the MiniDisplayPort I have to go to click the box for Mirror Display.  In System Preferences--- Sound---- Output Tab, the only two choices are:  Headphones...... Headphone Port, and E3D420VX....... HDMI, neither of which seem to help "push" sound through the MiniDisplayPort.
So, I give up and watch the movie on the Vizio screen (through the HDMI cord), while listening to sound on the little computer speakers.  After watching a couple of movies, and then not doing anything for a few minutes, all of a sudden the movie starts replaying off the play list, and lo and behold..... sound coming through the TV speaker system!!!  (So, I know the HDMI cable is capable of carrying audio.)
If any one can help me figure out how to get sound through the HDMI cord all the time,  it would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello,
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • PB Titanium freezes on boot; Volume error

Erratic behavior followed a "force quit" on Palm Desktop. On reboot error message while attempting to open Palm Desktop, "...unexpected end of file." Corrected that with backed up file but then erratic behaviors involving freezes during and after reboot began. Freezes can only resolved by shutting down and restarting. Sometimes video screen dark with portions of boot up screen visible. Unable to replicate behaviors, results too erratic. Ran TechTools boot disk, initially hardware and file tests "passed". Then a force quit on Geditcom (normally very stable!), returned the behaviors involving freezes. Reset PMU, Reran Disk First Aid and Tech Tool unable to repair. produced this error message, "Missing thread record (id = 4407162) Error the underlying on ent (-9972) Repair attempted 1 volume could not be repaired. Resore disk only seem to allow erasing the volume not restoring OSX (10.3.9). Changed the start up disk to a "PB Clone" (with systemfiles) on on a firewire external hard drive. Chime sounds, screen lights, apple appears, pinwheel does not, screen goes dark nothing faintly visible. CTRLCOMMANDPower Button restarts the same sequence and results.
Anxious not to destroy the data files unless I have to. Suspect that there the current state may perhaps be hardware despite the "passed" Tech Tool tests, perhaps video and/or keyboard although like problems had ocurred with USB keyboard and external display during earlier troubleshooting.
Don't understand why my firewire external Powerbook will not start up. The Apple Restore Disk and Tech Tool boot disk work although the video light up has some idiosyncracies?
Is it likely that I can put it in "firewire mode (Target Disc)" and access the files on its HD?
Sure could use some theories or solutions.

Is it likely that I can put it in "firewire mode (Target Disc)" and access the files on its HD?
I don't know what the odds are, but if you have access to another FW Mac, there's no reason not to try; it'll only cost you $10-15 for a FW cable (if you don't have one) and a minute or two of your time to find out.

  • Can I substitute an external display in place of broken powerbook screen?

Water was spilled on my powerbook titanium and now the backlight doesn't work. This is fairly expensive to replace, but the computer appears to be working fine (from what I can tell using the dimly light display).
Instead of replacing my screen which would be costly can I just use my powerbook as a desktop and attach it to the external display? Without seeing whats on the screen can I setup my computer to use the external display as the main output (mirroring)? I fear I might not be able to do this without the GUI provided by the screen.
    Anyone ever done this?
    Thanks.
    Powerbook G4 Titanium 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, you should be able to do this no problem. You don't need the GUI. Just close the lid on the TiBook, attach and external monitor and then use and external USB keyboard or mouse to wake the system. Leave the lid closed at all times. And leave the AC adapter attached. Should work fine.

  • Can I do a clean install on a G4 titanium that has no screen?

My son gave me his G4 titanium which has no screen. He was using it with a cinema display for movies. I sold the cinema display and would like to sell the G4. But I want to do a clean install of Tiger (have disk) on it first. Alternatively I can just erase the hard drive on the G4 in target mode with my 12" powerbook. But I'm curious to know if there's a way to do a clean install on the G4 even though it has no screen. The G4 shows up just fine in target mode on my 12" and verified okay.
    Thanks!

If I load the disk into the 12" it wants to restart the 12" to begin the installation which will kill the FW connection with the G4.
It will be picked up again during or after the restart process, or you could just hold off going into the Installer itself until the restart is done and the Titanium is in that mode.
