G4 to Mac Pro migration

I am getting a new Mac pro. I have a G4 tower with 10.5.5 on it. I am considering various migration procedures. Time is not a big consideration. I am a knowledgeable user.
1- I could use the migration assistant.
2- I could reinstall applications and manually move over documents.
3- I was really thinking of cloning the G4 HD or an external firewire drive which has a clone of the G4 HD to the Mac Pro HD. However is there any danger in this? Maybe the Mac Pro has pre-installed files that are specific to the Mac Pro. And are there formatting issues? Almost all my applications are universal but perhaps they are set up on the G4 for PPC.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would keep Norton AV 10 ft or 10 miles away from Leopard and Intel Mac Pro. ClamXav maybe, even Intego AV leaves something to be desired.
Applications should not be migrated from a G4 PPC if they use an installer or use package and install in the top two level library folders. What can happen is system is sluggish or slower than normal or acts erratic. Hopefully that won't happen, but I always advise to clone a system first before updating - in any manner.

  • Need help with G4 to Mac Pro Migration!

After buying my 2.66 GHz Mac pro, i followed the instructions as to how to start up the G4 in "Target Disk Mode" for migration. Was completely useless.
Whether clicking the button in the "Startup Disk" prefs, or holding down 'T' and restarting, i got the same results: My G4 system would restart but before anything appeared on the screen, it shut down and stayed.
I've been searching all over these forums and doing a lot of reading and experimentation. It sound like a lot of people aren't having good luck with the migration wizard anyway.
II did finally manage to get the Mac Pro to log onto the G4 with a cross-over cable. But i need to transfer a tremendous amount of data both from my primary account on the G4 and 3 non-boot internal drives.
Having to go through a public folder isn't going to cut it. .MAC isn't either.
Is there some way i can link up the two systems such that i can retrieve what i want from the G4's drives (without spending additional money).

Efforts to make "Target Disk" mode function didn't seem to go anywhere.
I did at last figure out how to get access to disks all disks on my G4 from my Mac Pro, however.
For those who may need to know it required these simple steps:
{1} I connected both systems to a hub (or DSL router in my case) via ethernet. Connecting the two machines with an ethernet crossover cable also worked, but of course my access to the internet was then unavailable.
{2} Opened TCP/IP in Network prefs on both machines and set them up identically according to my ISP's instructions, as always, but with differing IP addresses.
{3} Under the Services tab in Sharing preferences i checked the box to enable "Personal File Sharing"
{4} I then chose Connect to server... {command-K} in the Finder on the Mac Pro and entered the LAN IP address of the G4.
{5} At the login prompt i entered my G4 main account login & password information.
{6} When the window with my G4 system's name came up and asked which disk(s) to mount, i selected all of them and clicked { Ok }.
Presto. The G4 main drive, my 2 disk raid, my 4th disk, and my home directory all popped up on the Mac Pro Desktop.

  • Mac Pro migration questions

Just bought an 8-core Mac Pro. Wooo hoooo!
I'll be selling my G5, and I want to include the applications but of course not my files, passwords, etc. I thought I would just create a new user account, log in to that, and delete my old user account. Will that do it, or is there anything else I need to do?
Also, I'm thinking I want to put the OS X system & apps on one drive and the user directory and image files on another drive in my new MP. If I simply migrate my apps & user directory from my old Mac, everything will obviously end up on the same drive. So how can I move the home user directory to another drive without screwing up permissions, file access, etc?
    Thanks.

If you're selling your old computer and it has private data on it you wouldn't want anyone else to get, then you should wipe the disk first and re-install the OS. If you just drag your files to the trash and delete, the buyer will be able to recover the data.
After you save your data off the old computer, pop-in the OS Install disk and boot from it. Run Disk Utility and select your hard drive in the left side of the Disk Utility window. On the right side chose Erase. Click the Security settings button and select an option that actually erases data. Depending on your paranoia level, select the option that securely erases your data to your satisfaction. Keep in mind that the lower down on the list of options you go, the longer it will take. It will probably take several hours depending on the disk size and which option you chose. Click OK and then click the Erase button. Then find something else to do while it wipes your disk clean.
When its done, you can begin the OS install process.
Did I mention don't forget to back up your data first?

  • G4 to Mac Pro Migration Plan

I am thinking ahead to Monday when I will get my new Mac Pro and will be faced with the task of transferring everything to it from my Power Mac G4. I have used the Migration Assistant before and it works remarkably well but I plan to make this shift without using it. I have accumulated a lot of junk over the years and I need to do some house keeping in the process. I've also learned some lessons and hope to avoid past mistakes. I'm setting my plan down and putting it out for others to comment on in hopes of improving it.
    G4 Preparations
    - House clean. Clear all documents from the desktop by deleting folder aliases and filing or trashing documents.
    - Check Applications and Utility folders and develop a priority list for reinstallation.
A - Install right away; 1 Critical for system operation, 2 Important, use daily
    B - Install later
    C - Questionable
    - Download latest updates
    - Check top level of all partitions for files that are mislaid.
    - Check Applications (Mac OS 9) for applications that need to be reinstalled. (My Mac still has a separate OS-9 partition into which I can boot.)
    - Verify/update my list of software registration IDs and keys, and print same as ready reference
    Mac Pro Startup
    - Conduct initial startup and checkout of computer, with the same username, long and short, as the old one.
    - Insert the Apple Software installation DVD and reboot.
    - Use Disk Utility to partition drive
    - Reinstall System Software, using options to omit extra languages, fonts and stuff I do not need.
    - Use software update for all Apple applications.
    - Setup key System Preferences
    - Add Technician and Root users
    - Use NetInfo Manager to change UIDs and GIDs to align with current scheme. (This step is necessary for me to avoid permission problems. Mine are not the automatic assignments given by OS-X. I had to realign everything when I created a Guest user account and one for my wife on my PowerBook. - Long story.)
    - Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
    Software Installation and file transfer
    - Use source files to install Category A applications with updates in priority order.
    - Do updates immediately after initial installation of each
    - Launch and enter registration information; note any problems but move on.
    - T-boot G4.
    - Use Synchronize X! Plus to transfer User files from G4 with review
    - Drag and drop folders/files which are stored outside of User folder
    - Dismount and shutdown G4
    - Verify System Preferences for add ons such as Default Folder.
    - Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
    - Use Techtool Pro to create eDrive. Boot into eDrive and rebuild directory. Quit and restart into normal startup.
    - Setup Retrospect.
    - Restart G4 in normal mode on ethernet to use as needed
    - Startup Classic and install OS-9 legacy applications; checkout applications and then shutdown Classic
    - Use Font Book to check for and eliminate duplicate and unwanted fonts
    Shift into normal operations

    2) Forget about Mac OS 9/Classic… it's not supported
on Intel macs so don't even bother with this.
Hmmm. I wasn't aware of that. I have one critical OS-9 application, and two supporting classic applications, that will force me to keep the G4.
    3) While I understand the enabling of the root user
you should have no reason to use NetInfo Manager
    beyond this.
I have three computers and with the Mac Pro, it will be four. Before Tiger, permissions were not as persnickety but afterwards they became very picky. The initial user is given UID 501. So when I setup my wifes G5, she has UID 501. On my G4 I had UID 501. I was also UID 501 on my PowerBook but with a slighly different user name because I was careless when I set it up. When I added a Technician user account on my G4 and three user accounts on my PowerBook and began synchronizing files, with permissions between three computers, I started running into permission problems. Once I understood the source, I realized I had to rationalize users on all three computers. I used NetInfo manager and chown to get the same User IDs on all machines. Now my UID is 507, not the 501 automatically assigned by Mac OS to the first account.
    - Install Mac OS X (full install as it'll have ample
space to not care about a few GB here and there) and
    update all Apple software.
I'm not concern about the GB's. What I do not like are the extraneous cluter when I am looking for what I do want. I will never use any Chinese, Cryllic, etc. font. and they keep appearing in font lists if they are installed. I do not use several of the free Apple applications and I do not need them adding clutter to my applications folder.
    - Once I'm happy with my Mac Pro, which will probably
take a week or so, I'll re-task my Mac mini into a
server. Only at that point will my mini be touched
unless I need it to actually do something.
I didn't think about cloning my Startup partition onto a firewire drive. I have been quite happy with using T-Boot. But the cloning is worth thinking about. Using T-boot means my email is down for a while but that is not important.
If I had a mini, I'd be keeping it as a server also. I'd like to keep my G4 for a similar purpose, and will need to keep it for the ability to shift to OS-9 but I'd like to get rid of it as a source of heat.

  • Migration assistant screw up, Mac Pro not seeing wifi/TC

    Hi
I've been using a MacBookPro (MBP) for almost 5 years now, with a 1TB Time Capsule (TC1) using Time Machine (TM). I am the sole user, HDD is 270Gb used/50Gb free; using Mavericks, v10.9.2. On Friday, I used Sophos anti virus home edition, to scan the MBP. It comes up with no threats identified, and I uninstall Sophos.
Yesterday I took delivery of the Mac Pro (MP) with the 3Tb Time Capsule (TC3).
I booted up the MP, with the TC3. I did not, at this stage, connect the TC3 to the internet. Using TM, I backed up the MP. TC3 flashes the amber light.
Using Migration Assistant (MA) I tried to copy the MBP to the MP, 3 times. This did not work. At the point where the target machine has listed what is available to transfer, I click Continue and MA on the MP closes, on the MBP it says something like connection lost. The screen where this happens, lists 3 items available to transfer Application, Documents/Date and Computer settings; with a content of 128kb indicated, which is clearly wrong! The connection was an Ethernet cable direct from the MBP to the MP.
At this stage, I decide to connect the MP to the internet using TC3, there's some settings to be changed on TC3 using Airport Utility and it connects ok. TC3 has a steady green light.
I run 2 software updates on the MP. I surf the net briefly, to make sure it's ok.
I try again to use MA. This time, the dialgoue box listing what's available to transfer is different. There are 2 or 3 more options, colour is present, the font is different, the box is about the same size. The MP would not let me take any screenshots as all other applications are closed when MA is running. I don't think it gave me the size of what was being transferred, but it looked more hopeful, so I Continue and the transfer starts, with an estimated time of 33 minutes.
    The transfer completes.
The MBP, as you would expect, has not changed, the MP has, but not in the way I expected. Applications appear to have all transferred (without checking them), no Documents/data and no Downloads appear to have transferred; I ticked to transfer everything.;I know I can reconnect the Ethernet cable and simply copy the data across.
But the main problem appears to be, the MP does not see the wifi.
    Ethernet cable is removed.
The MP asks if I want to give permission to eeEvents manager (I presume calendar related) and say yes. It also asks if I want to install a Java run time, no.
In System preferences/Network it tells me a new Thunderbolt bridge has been found and asks if it's ok, to accept it, yes. It tells me the Ethernet cable is disconnected, rightly so; it says Airport is not connected.
I open Airport utility, no sign of the TC1 or TC3 despite it searching. Apart from TC1, the MP, MBP and TC3 are sat within a couple of feet of each other.
I turn on TC1/TC3 (separately and not at the same time, then at the same time), but the MP does not see them. I've reset TC3, rebooted the MP and still the MP does not see it.
I don't get any errors or warnings coming up.
I think my next option is to try and reset the MP to the factory settings, but this won't work, as I've no internet connection to reinstall OS X. No disc is sent with the MP.
Any suggestions as to what to try? Otherwise, I'll be off to the Apple Store tomorrow for a One to One!! :-(
Thanks for any help and Happy Mother's Day!!

Take the MP and connect it via ETH to your main router.
Restart the machine holding down command option R, you should see a spinning globe
Open disk utility and reformat the MP HD as Mac journaled
Then install OSX on this drive

  • How can I migrate data to new Mac Pro with only 1 monitor

I am ready to set up my new Mac Pro.  I know how to migrate my files from my G5 using Firewire and making the new computer a target disk.  My problem is, I have only 1 monitor.  Is there an easy way around this, OR of not, can I use my Macbook Pro just a monitor and if so how?

If you make the new computer a FireWire Hard drive, the only thing on its monitor will be the firewire symbol. You don't need a monitor to see that.
But if you did, you could start the new computer up first, look at the firewire symbol, get a warm fuzzy feeling, disconnect the  monitor and plug it into the old computer to make the transfers.

  • Can I migrate/copy my iTunes configuration to a new Mac Pro?

I have been able to copy over the sparse-bundle backups and restore.   But what I need to know is if I can copy over the entire configuration of iTunes (not just the music) such that my sync settings are retained (ie: sync only checked songs).  I have a considerably large collection of music and there's no way I want to go through selection again.   I just had my iPhone replaced, have a new cylinder Mac Pro to which I want to migrate this data.
I did perform an rsync of the Music directory structure to my new Mac Pro, but it appears to be missing settings (as I mention above).   I imagine that's stored elsewhere.
    Could someone elaborate?
    Thanks!

Found out how to address plist conversion from this page:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20050430105126392
But I think iTunes has sorted this out.  As my $HOME is actually /Users/username and not /Volumes/Home/username on the new Mac.  We'll see... I'm sync'ing now

    Hello Forum Members,
I figured it out. You have to select  the actual logo of the Lightroom catalog and then click on  "get info" and allow what ever your new user name to "read and write". That worked!

  • Questions about migrating to a Mac Pro from an old MacBook Pro

My present setup is a 2006 MacBook Pro with 3 external drives. One external eSATA RAID1 for music, another eSATA RAID1 for photos and video/movies, and the 3rd (FireWire) is for Time Machine. The internal 320 GB boot drive has 2 Boot Camp partitions for Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7.
Here's the new setup (as purchased):
    • Mid-2010 ( MacPro5,1 ) Mac Pro 6-core 3.33 GHz
    • 8 GB RAM (4x2 GB)
    • 8 TB HD (4x2 GB Seagates)
    • Apple RAID card
Mulling this migration over, these are the things I'm wondering about:
    • I'll probably keep the 4x2 GB internals as a group, either going with two 2x2TB RAID1 volumes or perhaps considering a single 4x2TB RAID10 arrangement. The latter makes me a little nervous‡.
(‡ +Why? Not a fan of striping in general - plus, with my present setup, a problem with one of my Venus eSATA RAID enclosures was easily testable by removing the disks from the other "good" enclosure and substituting the other "bad" enclosure's disks to test inside a "good" enclosure - i.e. it was nice to have redundancy+ ).
    Q. *Any thoughts either way on going with 2xRAID1 vs. 1xRAID10?*
    Q. *Any Apple RAID card horror stories?*
    • Therefore, I'm thinking of adding a cradle and disk(s) to the ODD_SATA ports. Probably a 256 GB SSD at a minimum for the boot drive.
    Q. *Any issues booting OS X from an ODD_SATA-connected SSD?*
    Q. *I understand you can't use Boot Camp on Apple RAID card-connected drives. True?*
    Q. *I also seem to be reading that you can't boot Windows in any guise from an ODD_SATA-connected drive (SSD or HDD). True as well?*
Am I screwed? Forced to keep the MacBook Pro around for Boot Camp, no way to run it on the Mac Pro with this configuration?
    • Memory. I understand these boxes run their memory with Triple Channel.
    Q. *It sounds like at the very least I should rip out the 4th 2 GB DIMM. Probably replace all 4 with 3x4 GB or 3x8 GB (ECC) DIMMs, right?*
Yikes. Long post. Sorry. That's enough for now, I think.

    now-disconnected iPass port
I don't think the 2010 model you ordered HAS an iPass port. The new Apple RAID card does not use one.
Follow a complicated procedure for trying to get the Mac to run all the SATA ports as AHCI so that Windows would 'see' all 6 of the SATA ports instead of what I presumed to be the current situation,
I don't think that applies to 2009 and later models either. The six SATA port are all listed in my Mac PRO as AHCI and all should be equivalent:
    Serial-ATA Device Tree
    -Intel ICH10 AHCI
    . HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GH41N
    -Intel ICH10 AHCI
    . HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GH41N
    -Intel ICH10 AHCI
    . WDC WD360GD-00FLA2
    -Intel ICH10 AHCI
    . Kinston SSDNOW 30GB
    Intel ICH10 AHCI
    Intel ICH10 AHCI
You sure are digging up some stale information in your research
... but you are rapidly becoming an expert on the way it USED to be.
Now take the essence of what you posted just above, start a new topic, give it a catchy title, and see what other Users have to say!

    Hi rustyg12,
    Go to Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS6/Configuration/Menus/menus.bak
You'll see a menus.xml there - it is a backup copy of the actual menus.xml file that DW uses.
Copy it from that folder, paste it 1 level above (in Menus folder).
Fire up DW. See if it works.

  • After Migration to new Mac Pro, intermittent slow downs, SROD's

I started with a my intel mac mini, Leopard OS was installed on an external Firewire drive, most applications were installed on another partition of that same drive. I bought a new mac pro 8 core, and an additional firewire external drive that I set up as my Time Machine drive on my old mac mini. I did a full backup of my old mac mini system and then attached the time machine drive and the other external hard drive to my new mac pro. I used the migration assistant to transfer files to my new mac pro. However, now there appears to be something occuring between my internal mac pro hard drive and the old external hard drive from my mac mini. When using some applications, Itunes, Logic Pro, Firefox, the ap will hang and appears to be trying to access files from the old external drive. I hope I'm being clear with what the issue is. I'm thinking duplicate files on this external drive and my internal drive are causing some problems? I need to know how to repair the issue, and preserve my data files?

Thanks for your quick response. I know I've been somewhat confusing here. I'm running the latest Snow Leopard update on my mac pro now.
Then please update your profile, as it still shows the mini and Leopard.
And I'll ask a Host to move this to the Snow Leopard > Time Machine forum.
All the aps and data were migrated onto the internal HD in the mac pro, and the aps and files and directory structures, etc. are still also on the external drive that used to comprise the OS of my mac mini. I'm thinking that may be part of the issue, but I'm new to Mac and not certain of that or how to fix the issues.
Depending on how you did that, I'm not sure everything on those partitions got on to the new Mac's HD. Check that first, via the Finder.
Let's start with iTunes and/or iPhoto.
First see if you have the same stuff in both places. Use the Finder to see how large each is on the external HD, and compare that to the iTunes and iPhoto folders on your internal HD.
If they're not on your internal HD at all, use these instructions to move them:
    Moving your iTunes Music folder
    Moving your iPhoto library
If the versions on the external are newer than the ones on your internal, delete the ones on the internal and use those instructions to move from the external to the internal.
But don't delete the versions on the external just yet. Eject and disconnect it, and make sure everything's fine. It won't hurt to leave the data there for a while, especially as long as it's disconnected.
If the music or photos on your HD are the same, or newer, hold down the Option key while starting iTunes or iPhoto. That will give you a prompt where you can select which one you want to use.
Once you've selected the ones you want, eject and disconnect the external. Then use as many apps as you can, to see if everything works properly and all your data is found.
Without knowing what other apps you have, and how they work, I can't tell in advance whether any others will be looking for the external drive. If you get error messages, you'll have to deal with each app that seems lost.
I'd be inclined to keep the old external "on the shelf" for quite a while, just to be sure nothing got missed.
Have you started doing Time Machine backups of the new Mac yet? When you do, you'll get a prompt about whether to "re-use" the Mini's backups. See #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. You probably want to select "Re-use," especially if there's a considerable amount of space on your TM drive.
