G4 TV connection for home theater help

Just inherited a G4 tower that I'm considering using to play vids on my old school TV (RCA and coax in only). I've been using my Macbook Pro to do this lately. Imagine my surprise when I found that my current DVI/video adapter does not fit the DVI on the G4 (and thus I learned about the development of the dual link DVI connection...)
So... can I make this thing work? I've poked around and all I can find are DVI to 3-component RCA adapters. Is there a way to make that work? Or is there (hopefully) a DVI/RCA video adapters stashed in the back of a shop somewhere...
Or should I toss this thing to the curb and buy a mini?

Adding a PCI video card would work.
Most Mac Radeon PCI cards have S-Video out.
Use one of these to convert the S-video to RCA.

  • Looking for home theater

I'm looking to add surround sound to my home theater setup. I'm not exactly what i need or where to start. I have a 47" lcd tv, a ps3, and my dish reciever that i would like to have all hook up through surround sound.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi nick,
    Welcome to the Community!
There are many possibilities for the audio portion of your home theater.
The easiest thing to do is select an All-In-One Home Theater System (sometimes called a Home Theater-In-A-Box).  This will contain the audio receiver, speakers, and wires.
Whether shopping for each component separately or as a set, here's what you need to consider:
Make sure you have the inputs and outputs on the receiver you'll need to properly connect your current and planned devices.
For speakers, consider whether you want 5 or 7 speakers, or a sound bar.  You can demo the differences in the Best Buy store.  Also consider whether you want to run wires for the rear speakers or have a wireless setup.
Also consider whether you'll be adding things like Blu-ray or internet content into the mix.  This can help you decide whether to get a system with Blu-ray or internet connectivity built-in or a standalone system.

  • Connecting to home theater receiver

how do I connect Apple TV to my Home theater receiver which is alrady connected to my hd tv?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
You can either connect your tv to your receiver using either HDMI or component (existing tv only) and then connect your receiver to the TV by the connection of your choice depending on what is available on both your TV and your receiver.
Alternatively, you can continue to connect your tv to your TV in your current configuration and use the optical audio connection to connect your tv to your receiver for audio only.

  • Connection of Home Theater Recei

For my Home Theater I would like to use my PC a DVD player, music player, and for gaming on my Infocus Projector. I am trying to figure out what Sound Card will be sufficient and how it will actually connect to my Recei'ver (Yamaha HTR-5830SL 550W 5.-Ch. Digital Home Theater Recei'ver) (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=703449&type=product&productCateg oryId=cat0303&id=099395588707)
    Here are my specifications:
Want to connect my sound card to the above receiver but still have desktop speakers and a mic out so when I am playing BF2 I can talk to other players. HOw would I hook this up? SPDIF, Y connectors, ? I s this even possible?

I game more than watch movies or listen to music on my pc & yes ..it was interesting to read in the sticky... thanks for the reminder. I don't have 5. or higher spkr setup, i use a?centre + frnt right + frnt left on hi-fi system and creative 2. THX speaker system?& then i just tweak the sound from both sources, on my amp it has cinema studio EX & i find using that i get a good mixture of mid & high sounds, plus the mission 703's give good punchy?bass,?the thunder/bass comes from the creative 2. sub as well as some high?crisp sounds from the 2. THX front right & left ...so what's that? ..pseudo surround ..lol. What i find odd is why do pc?game publishers put Dolby Digital on the pc games?box when realy then it should be EAX support ..as notied in the sticky below. But tbh the very best sound for me personaly has to be headphones ..but you need a good set of cans though. PC GamesPC games usually use technologies?like as EAX to create surround sound, not Dolby Digital. So even if your speaker system has a Dolby Digital decoder, it will be of no use when playing?games.
The EAX processing is done on the soundcard, and?the 6-channel sound is?output via the analogue (or digital DIN if available). So you still need analogue connections to your digital speakers for games, if you just use an optical/coax cable you will only get the front left/right sound. (N.B. X-Box games do support Dolby Digital, so if you connect your X-Box to your Dolby Digital receiver/speakers with the optical cable, you can get full surround sound.)?

what is the best way to connect iPhone to home theater receiver?

    For audio, video, or both?

    I use AirPlay.
If your receiver doesn't support AirPlay, you might try USB or Bluetooth.
If it's an older model that doesn't support any of the above, the mini-stereo-to-RCA cable may be your best option.

  • Add Wireless Bridge to TC Setup for Home Theater?

Hi, I'm admittedly green at this topic and not exactly sure how to ask the question. I have a 2nd generation TC in my basement connected to a cable modem for internet access. I have a budding home theater on our first floor and a new A/V receiver with internet capability, but it has to be Ethernet connected. It also seems to me that it would be more reliable and have higher speeds if I used Ethernet for my Apple TV and Oppo Blu ray player. What piece of hardware should I be looking to buy that can wirelessly connect with the TC in the basement and provide Ethernet connections to my home theater? I don't know what to look for and need some direction.
Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Performance wise, the best choice by far would be to run an Ethernet cable from the TC location to the home theater location and then connect a 5-port or 8-port Ethernet switch to provide the wired connections that you need.
Next choice would be to add an AirPort Extreme to connect using wireless back to the TC and configure it to "extend" a wireless network.  You will have up to 4 Ethernet ports to connect wired devices to the AirPort Extreme and you will also have more wireless signal coverage as well in the home theater area.
Don't be fooled here though....although the A/V receiver, Apple TV and Blu-Ray player will appear to be connected as wired devices.....the connection to all of these devices will be limited by the quality of the wireless signal "hop" between the TC and AirPort Extreme.
To get an idea of whether this might work satisfactorily, move your MacBook Air to the same location as the home theater components and log on to the Internet. If you can get a good, fast, reliable wireless connection on the Mac, then the AirPort Extreme will likely deliver the performance that you need at that location.
Best of all worlds would be to run an Ethernet cable from the TC to the AirPort Extreme.  This would provide wired connections for all devices all the way back to the TC and also provide more wireless signal coverage in the home theater area.

  • FPS2000 subwoofer for home theater?

This question might be kind of out there but oh well... I know these are digital speakers but is there any way to get this subwoofer to output a signal from a home theater receiver with a subwoofer output? I have it just sitting around and would like to use it if possible because it's tiny, amplified, and packs a nice punch for its size. Thanks!

Options other than what.  We don't know enough about your installation.  Is this the same TV in the same location, or what?  E.G. I use a Harmony remote.  My
TV in the family room is the "home theater."  I have my remote set up to Watch TV when all I want on is the TV, and Watch TV 2  when I want the amplifier/surround sound/DVD/PS3 on.  So, what is it you are trying to do?
Your VZ remote comes in a 2-button variety, and a 4-button (you pay for it) variety which might be sufficient for you.  There are lots of alternative remotes.

  • Recording a surround sound cd/dvd for home theater

I am trying to burn a 5.1 surround sound cd/dvd with different audio in each channel.  I have created the file without any problems and it will play on my computer in surround sound.  When I burn the cd/dvd (I have tried both) all of the audio plays in all channels. How do I burn the file onto a disc so that it will play correctly as surround sound in my home theater?

I know this question was asked ages ago, but I'm sure others are probably looking for an answer too (as I was over a year ago, when I started working with Audition 3).
In my experience, there is no way to directly export a functional 5.1 file from Audition.  You can surround mix a file using the surround panner, but you can't export in the file format used by most home theater systems (.ac3 - Dolby Surround Sound).  My solution was to track down a standalone encoder, although there may be pugins available to allow Audition to do this.  After surround mixing, I export to 5 mono wav files and then drop them into this absolutely ancient program called Soft Encode, which creates a single, interleaved .ac3 file out of my source files.  Then, I take the .ac3 file, create a blank video the same length, and use my video editor to burn them to a DVD.
From what my research turned up, the reason Audition does not have the capability to export in .ac3 is because of the expense of licensing with Dolby.  I would love to see a more sophisticated surround panner in AA4, as well as the ability to natively export .ac3 files, but by the same token, I don't want to see a skyrocketing price, so I'm waiting to see what happens!

  • MBP Set Up for Home Theater

    Hello guys,
so my MBP is 2010 model. I'd like to set it up with my home theater system.
    1) Projector: DVI in
    2) Amp: S/PDIF in
I guess i need two cable for each of them
    1) Minidisplay to DVI cable
    2) Headphone jack to S/PDIF cable
I think 1) is easier to find, but 2) is a bit hard. 'headphone jack'  has many names...like 3.5mm, mini jack,...is Toslink one of them?
I found Toslink to S/PDIF cable on the web but not sure that's the right cable.
    Thanks in advance!

  • ITunes Streaming: connection to home theater using Airport Extreme & Expres

I'm hoping this problem is an easy system config fix...
I am trying to stream my iTunes library from my desktop in the office to my laptop in the living room. Easy 'nuff so far. I adjusted all the nec. settings on each & my desktop iTunes lib. shows up on my laptop iTunes. Plays fine through the laptop speakers.
Now the tricky part that I can't figure out:
The desktop has an Airport Extreme base station & I'm using an Airport Express as a signal booster in the living room.
The AP Express has a 1/4 jack to RCA left/right plugged in to it that is going to my home theater receiver.
How, or can, I get the Airport Express to send the signal out of it so I can listen to my library through the home speakers? All wirelessly of course. ; )
The goal is to listen & control my desktop iTunes lib through my laptop & have it play through my home theater.
    dual 2Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Figured it out... hadn't turned on AirTunes on the desktop iTunes/Prefs.
    Merry Christmas to me early!

Could i have serial number to complete installiation.
    Thanks in advance.

The serial number would have been printed on the CD sleeve or the CD itself.

  • Looking for home theater with best bass

I have a smaller Philips home theater system in my living room but the bass is seriously lacking. I'm putting together a game room and I want something with much better bass.  Any suggestions?

Does your phillips receiver have a sub out? If so pick up a Polk Audio psw110 power subwoofer.   If it doesn't have a sub out on the back you would need to buy a receiver with that option to really get the best bass.   Also where is your current subwoofer if you have one.  Try different locations, i.e. behind the tv , behind a couch, in a corner.

  • Home Theater help for prewired system

When we built our house we had it prewired for 4 speakers in the living room and 2 speakers on the patio.  We have an HDTV in the living room as well.  We can't figure out if we can get an all-in-one system or if we will need to buy the components seperately...and we would prefer NOT to spend alot of money, so the all-in-one would be our preference.  Is it going to be possible for us to find a system that will support what we need?
    Any advice/input would be helpful...

if you are prewired for IN WALL speakers than thats what you are going to have to do......if you prewired and the speaker wire is in the wall and you will have access then you go do an ON WALL speaker.....I personally NEVER sell a ALL in one system to my clients.  They have "tingy and twangy" sounds.  They normally do not provide enough output power to really enjoy, sometimes they don't have enough inputs for components and alot of them are just plain CRAP.
Your statement of not wanting to spend alot of money is typical of every customer in todays world.  They want the best but don't want to pay for it.  You could do a nice Onkyo setup for under $700 dollars.  If thats to much money then go ahead and get the 200 dollar all in one player/surround......

  • Apple TV 2 Can See My Library, But Can't Connect for Home Sharing

I'm really at my last rope, so hoping someone will have mercy and be able to help here.
    Symptoms:
    - Go to my Apple TV 2
    - Under the Home Sharing menu, select "Adam Nash's Library"
    Result:
    - Spinning cursor
    - Cannot connect to "Adam Nash's Library".  Please check that your computer is on and on the same network.
Internet access works for all devices, they all can do Netflix and Apple Store.  Only one network in the house.  No firewall activated on the mac.
I have multiple AppleTV units, and this has intermittently affected all of them.  Periodically, I have solved the problem by taking them on / off ethernet.
    Things I have tried:
    - Restarting iTunes on the computer
    - Turning Home Sharing on and off on AppleTV
    - Turning Home Sharing on and off on iTunes
    - Rebooting the computer
    - Resetting the AppleTV units
    - Restoring the AppleTV units
    - Forcing the AppleTV units to different IP
    - Forcing the AppleTV units to Ethernet instead of Airport (by plugging into Airport base stations directly)
    - Swapping AppleTV units to different rooms
    Nothing works.
One clue.  I have three Airport Extreme base stations in the house, and this problem begain when one of them started misbehaving (would connect, but wouldn't pass through packets.)  It's an Airport Extreme Base Station (Series 1).  The other two are Series 4 & Series 5.  I reset the misbehaving box and reconfigured it, and seems to be working fine from a networking standpoint.  But once that happened, one of the AppleTVs started showing this problem.
Is there some reason that Home Sharing is hyper sensitive to the network in some way?  It *seems* like what's happening is that it's seeing the iTunes Library (which is why it show's the Library name), but when it tries to connect, something is either encrypted differently or permissioned wrong.
Hoping someone can help me.  Frustration is at 11.

One clue: I have found a reliable way to solve the problem when it happens.
In my network, I have the main Airport Extreme (Gen 1) which is connected to my router, which distributes IP addresses to my internal subnet.  The other two AEs (one Gen 4, one Gen 5) are set to extend the network.
When I get this problem with an AppleTV 2 that can "see" my library, but when I try to open it, it says it couldn't find the library, it seems to have to do with a change in which Airport Extreme it's talking to.
If I restart the main Airport Extreme from the Airport Utility, effectively restarting the entire wireless network, then when the network resumes, every AppleTV 2 is happy again.
Unfortuntely, the problem does seem to recur - but I'm wondering if it's because temporary interference leads an AppleTV 2 to try to connect to a different AE, and somehow that's mucking with the Home Sharing.  Remember, internet access (Trailers, Store, Netflix) have no issues.  Purely Home Sharing.

  • Need DirectTV/Home Theater Help!!

Just moved into a new house with built in Bose surround sound system (left and right/front and back speakers all wired into wall).  Wall has a panel with 12 input plugs (2 plugs for each of the six speakers (RCA type input).
I have DirectTV (Dolby 5.1 capable) but need to know how I connect the DTV box (HDMI, Coaxial, or Optical Audio out) to the wall that is simply RCA type audio inputs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello pavebutz,
What trock0002 said is correct.  You would need an audio receiver.  The speakers are not self powered.  They need to be connected to an audio receiver that will use its amp to power the speakers.  The DirecTV receivers do not have powered audio connections.
So, you would most likely end up plugging the HDMI (could be coaxial or optical, but if the audio receiver can use HDMI I would recommend using it) from the satellite receiver into one of the inputs on the audio receiver.  Then you set the volume and levels of the system using the audio receive.
    Good luck!
