G4 Video Card Upgrade Recommendations?

I have a G4 Dual Gig Quicksilver PowerMac. Motion will not run with the stock GeForce4 MX card, so I need to upgrade. My speciality is in audio, and I'm unfamiliar with the current crop of video card options. Does anyone have any suggestions on which card(s) might be best? ATI or Nvidia?
I also have a 20 inch Cinema Display with an ADC connector, it looks like I'm out of luck trying to find a card to work without an adapter, but maybe there's a solution I missed?
Thanks,
PowerMac G4 Dual Gig, Powerbook G4 15" 1.67GB   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.5 GB RAM, ProTools HD Accel 2

the top of the line for your mac which is the same is mine is the newest ATI Radeon 9800 pro with 256 megs of video ram. i have the same card although i just had to send mine in for some warranty repair.
it works well enough considering the age of the computer. i can get decent operation with motion and the open gl with after effects is nicer than with the stock nvidia card. however, it does increase the noise level from the quicksilver substantially.
i had to install the original video card and i miss my radeon 9800!
you can also get a radeon 9600 with the same amount of video ram and these cards are tested and compared at barefeats.com

  • DVI & ADC video card upgrade???

What can I get to replace the stock 64mb AGP card (at least I think it is) in my MDD Dual 1.42 machine. I currently run two Acrylic Cinema Displays, a 20" via DVI and a 17" via ADC...
Is ADC going to limit my options? If so, I can use a second ADC-DVI for the 17" monitor.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanx

Okay, so it sounds like I should "dump" the ADC idea.
    Then an I looking for a card with 2-DVI or 1-DVI and 1-VGA ???
I've followed several of your discussions, but still need a little help with the Video Card upgrade education. Flashed cards kind of scare me, but are they okay to use? I don't know if I could tell the difference anyway. Asking a seller on eBay if it is in most cases won't get you anywhere either.
You've talked about the 7800gs card. Any others I could consider? I've read that some cards don't work in a FW800 MDD machine.

  • Mac pro 8 core 3.1 randomly freezes after video card upgrade

    Hi,
I just installed an ATI 5770 as a video card upgrade, plugged my new LED cinema display 27 and everything seems to work fine.
Sometimes though, while working with Aperture I noticed the Mac Pro just freezes, although the mouse works, I cannot do anything and I'm forced to press and hold the power button for a reboot.
This happended randomly 5 or 6 times in a couple of weeks and only while working with Aperture.
Any thoughts? Anyone having the same issue?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Guido

    Running Lion or SL?
Tried holding Shift key down and do a safe boot after those freezes.
Use Disk Utility from another boot media to repair your drive.
Do you have enough RAM? is Aperture library on non-boot drive? Does it have 30% or more free? more is better. Same for the boot drive which sholdk be small and 50% free.
Corrupt library. Corrupt preferences (if there were none before, there likely are now after those hard restarts, to data files and to the disk directories).

  • Video Card Upgrades

I'm looking to either upgrade or augment the vid display card in my (admittedly) older G5. It was my severance pay from my previous employer, and I still haven't been able to find a job, so my financial resources are a tad limited at the moment.
I've seen Nvidia Geforce 6600 128mb on Ebay and I was wonder if it's a suitable replacement for the 64mb card I've currently got. ATI is the manufacturer of the existing card.

Seems like you must have an early G5 but not sure which exact model, but one with AGP 8x.
There are a number of threads of others asking for video card upgrades. And there is a great hardware resource and database:

    I think there is/was a 6800 Ultra also.

  • Can anyone recommend an OS and/or video card upgrade?

    Dear experienced video editors!:
I am currently trying to send a 1080p (Pro Res 422-encoded) Final Cut Pro 6 sequence to Motion 3 to do some effects work and the following message (from Motion 3) arose when I tried the "Send to Motion" command:
"This project is too large to render with these settings.  Your hardware cannot support a project of this size.  Try reducing the resolution of the project."
My questions for anyone able to help me are:  What 'settings' are they referring to?  Which 'hardware' cannot support my project, exactly? and What can I do to do my effects work in Motion 3 without reducing the resolution?
I have an early 2007 model Mac Pro desktop with the following specs...
    2 X 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Mac OS X (ver 10.5.8)
    6 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM memory
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card
The footage I am editing was shot with a Canon T3i at 24p at 1920x1080 res.  Before bringing the footage into Final Cut Pro 6, it was transcoded from H.264 to Pro Res 422.
    Any advice is appreciated!

Hi Shaun, here's some video card choices, but check which Mac Pro they work on, might even ask OWC for Motion details...

  • Video Card upgrade for HP Pavilion HPE h8-1256s Desktop

I wanted to upgrade my current graphics card which was an NVIDIA GeForce GT 620, the mother board is a H-Joshua-H61-uATX. I recently bought an EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti Superclock. I unistalled the old drivers took out the old card, added the new one and when I started up my PC i would recive 3 beeps and a black screen. I did some research and found out that it may be due to the BIOS. There is no BIOS upgrade I can find and my BIOS vers is AMI 7.11, 4/28/2012. I would appreciate a list or a recommendation of compatable Video cards so I do not have to keep buying and installing these devices or if there is a new BIOS update.

The EVGA 750 will not work with a version 7 BIOS.  Look under Windows 8 for BIOS version 8.19.

  • Pavillion P6-2310 video card upgrade

I wish to install a better video card in the p6-2310. I have heard that some models will not accept changes in the video and that the power supply may not have the proper connectors. Can someone clarify if a new video card is possible on this paticular machine and perhaps recommend a video card. I was thinking of something like a GeForce GTX 650 or such.
    Thanks in advance, Larry

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion p6-2310 Desktop Computer. According to the specs, this model has a PCI Express x16 (Gen 2.0) graphics card slot and a 300 watt power supply. Please measure along the plane of the PCIe x16 slot to determine the available space for a graphics card. The card you need depends on the space you have and the intended use. You will also need to upgrade the power supply to 500 to 600 watts, The Corsair CX500 and CX600 come highly recommended and are known to fit many HP consumer desktop cases.

  • G4 QuickSilver Video Card Upgrade Advice

Hi all...I have a G4 QuickSilver 2001 867mHz Mac with its factory nVidia GeForce2 MX card in the stages of dying. It crashes the system when I attempt to boot in regular mode and will only start up in safe mode. I am 99.99% sure it is the video card going. It will occasionally boot in regular mode but the graphics become distorted when any graphic intensive action is taken (e.g., menu pulldown, scrolling, etc.) and will eventually hang or a kernal panic occurs. I have ruled out any software issue.
I would like upgrade the card and maybe venture into the world of Motion at some point after I upgrade the processor. I do video editing on FinalCut and DVD StudioPro also. But as you know, under safe mode, all these programs are useless as well as printing.
My question is: What card would you recommend? I am leaning toward a ATI RADEON 9600 PRO PC & MAC 256MB AGP CARD or better. To be honest, I am totally bewildered by the various cards, etc. out there and don't have a clue as to what is recommended and what my machine can accomodate.
Any help you can give I would greatly appreciate it.

worked fine, but I had to try various combinations
    of
CRT vs LCD monitors on each port to get it
    started.
Then it would drive any combination. If the
    machine

  • Video Card Upgrade for HP Pavilion Dv7 2040us

HI My Dv7 2040us has an ATI Radeon 4650 video card. I want to run some new games and I need at least 4860 to run them. I was looking around and it seems I need to get a new card and install it directly to my motherboard. This is all do able for me I just need to know which new card would be compatible with my model of notebook. If anyone knows which one or where I can begin to look for one I would greatly appreciate the info. Thanks!

    Hi:
The only way you can upgrade the video in your notebook is to replace the entire motherboard with one that has a better video solution.
However, when you look at chapter 3 of the service manual at the link below, you are already at the top of the mark regarding what video chip is on the available motherboards.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01689926.pdf
So, you will either have to live with the status quo or buy a new notebook.

    Stuart, welcome to the forum.
The truth is, any video card that will run properly with the 300W PSU in the computer, will not be much better than the integrated video.  Most newer mid-level cards require a PSU with a minimum of 400W watts.  I have searched for other members many times without any luck.  If you want to upgrade the PSU, it will give you far more options.

  • K330 Video card upgrade question.

New to forum and was just about to pull the trigger on a new K330-77471CU (from BB). However, I read a customers comment saying that this unit only had an AGP port, no PCI express slots for upgrading the video card, can this be true??? Does'nt seem possible today.  The desktop overall will fit my needs, but I want to make sure that if I elected to upgrade the video card someday, I could with the latest generation cards.

thanks for the reply Duck3. The above desktop is a new release for BB stores and features i3-2100 / 8mgs memory / 1 T HD. Not a high end unit by any means but one that you would think would allow the user to upgrade the integrated vid. card to a dedicated ........ hmmmm , I'm hoping perhaps a rep from Lenovo will jump in and clear this up so I can make a decision on this particular desktop.  I highly doubt our local BB sales rep is going to know the answer to this. These things just hit the shelves here. And yes, the customer was giving his review of the above mentioned model he just purchased.

  • Video Card Upgrade - A general consensus.

I have a 2.8x8 Mac Pro (2008). I want to upgrade the standard 2600. I will be using the new grahpics card only in XP, and change the cables back to the 2600 everytime when under OS X. So my question is:
    1. Can I purchase any video card driver-designed for windows XP and expect it to operate normally, under XP? This is a MASSIVE gray area... hard to find sound information.
    2. Some cards (Radeon HD 4870) are designed for the Mac Pro. These have special boxes that indicate Mac compatiblity, and normal box counterparts for the windows market. The cards themselves are identical in every way. Are the normal boxed counterparts actually identical with regard to OS X driver compatibility?
Couldn't find these answers in concrete on recent posts, so perhaps this can shed light to others wanting to upgrade.
    Thanks,
    Graham

Yes you can buy a video card that is designed for windows and use it in your Mac pro, for windows. I did this for a while with mine. The only 4870 that will work with your Mac pro is the one from apple, or a flashed one from eBay. The GPUS are similar the difference is that the Mac card has a larger ROM and uses EFI instead of bios.

    Hi:
2 GB is max on your notebook.
Here is the processor spec direct from Intel. Note the max memory size is 2 GB.
    http://ark.intel.com/products/42503/Intel-Atom-Processor-N450-(512K-Cache-1_66-GHz)
You cannot upgrade the video adapter. It is soldered to the motherboard.
There is only one system board, so there isn't even another motherboard available with better video.
In order to install XP you need to slipstream the SATA AHCI driver.
Read this helpful guide below. Read the Intel section. Then use the guide to slipstream all of the drivers.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and/SATA-drivers-for-XP-solution-on-0x000000...
