G4 with OS X 10.4.11 and DVD's in various formats (NTSC, PAL, SECAM).

Can a G4 AGP Graphics “Sawtooth” running OS X 10.4.11 Tiger play DVD's in the various regional formats (such as NTSC, PAL, and SECAM) an unlimited number of times, or is there a limit to how often the capability to play a particular format can be switched to the capability to play a different one?

Using an application such as VLC should optimize format playability.  It may also help with the region code issue.  The "number of times" isn't to do with the DVD format, it has to do with region codes set into the DVD by the media distributors.  You can change that 5 times and then the DVD player is locked in forever. Try VLC and it may help with both the format playback and maybe get around the region code issue (disable Apple's own automatic DVD Player activation).

Which CD and DVD drives are burn compatible with 7.02.16? I want to get an USB external drive that I know Apple supports and will support with iTues.

are you getting an error message? if so, what does it say?
could you also post your DVD/CD diagnostics for us? in itunes, go "help > run diagnostics", select DVD/CD diagnostics, and paste the complete results into a reply.

  • IMac 17" Hard Drive and DVD dead after install.

I am attempting to install a WD 250gig hard drive into a 17” flat panel 800mhz imac. I followed the directions of taking the base apart and installing the new drive with great care. The Original 80 gig drive was set to master and the DVD drive was set to slave. I set the new WD drive to master and put the base back together. All I got was a flashing question mark. That was not unexpected, but I have been unable to get the iMac to recognize the existence of a hard drive or the DVD superdrive. I started the iMac from my Powerbook in firewire target mode. And verified that the iMac does not see the drives within the system information or the Disk Utility.
I have tried resetting PRAM, changing the jumpers on both drives, making the DVD master and the HD slave, setting the HD on cable select. Formatting the HD in my Powermac and cloning the original HD to it with CCC and replaced the ribbon cable. I now can take this iMac apart and put it back together faster then a Chinese factory worker.
I have abandon hopes of a new hard drive and put the 80 gig back in exactly as I found it. The iMac will not recognize the original configuration either. I started this project as favor for my sister who owns the iMac. There is not a lot of money here to send the whole works into service.
Does anyone have any ideas on what went wrong?
Is there a way I can test the power supply to the drives?
    imac 17" FP 800 mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Well we figured it out. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Since nothing we did worked, I figured we had nothing to lose. With the assistance of my electronics wiz brother, we powered up the iMac while having the base opened and the components spread out on a table. Using a voltmeter, we determined we were only getting 3.6 volts to the drives. It should have been 12 volts. Somehow, something went wrong with the system board. After careful examination under a magnifying glass and some prodding with a voltmeter, we discovered that a tiny component next to the power connector on the system board fell off. It was no more than 2mm across and was marked (L13). We figured this was an inductance component and probably a filtering device for the power to the drives. We powered up the board and jumped the leads with a screwdriver. The HD and DVD fired right up. A careful soldering across L13 made the fix permanent. I got it all put back together and everything is running great.
The moral of the story; be extremely careful when pulling connectors off the system board. I must have knocked the component off when I first took the iMac apart. I just got lucky we found out what it was and were able to find a quick fix.
This a nice little iMac, but i never want to work on one again.

  • IDVD and DVD+R media

    Hi all,
I was wondering if someone could help me. Recently I bought a whole pile of DVD+R discs, however, I find that whenever I go to burn an iDVD project using the DVD+R disc it brings up an error message after it has burnt the disc. I have also noticed that it takes forever to write the 'Lead-in'.
My PowerBook Superdrive definitely supports the DVD+R media as I can backup using the Finder as well as read DVD+R discs burnt using my Acer.
    Thanks in advance,
    Stu

    Stu,
then I'm going to go out and purchase another brand of DVD+R to see if it makes a difference.
What's your fascination for DVD+R? DVD-R and DVD+R are just format wars equally royalties for companies... As I mentioned, DVD-R has been more compatible with DVD players. This advantage is being reduced with newer DVD players built to play both formats; much like the DVD-Audio and SACD format war is leading to "universal" players.

  • "Ignore Ownership" when backing-up CDs and DVDs

    Dear members:
While in the process of making back-up copies of my applications' CDs and DVDs I was surprised by a message from Retrospect stating that if I proceeded to duplicate the disk with the option "Ignore Ownership" checked important files would not be copied that allowed the duplicate to be bootable.
Do any of you have experience with using Retrospect to duplicate CDs and DVDs ? Is this just a standard warning meant for duplicates of drives that have the operating system installed and that should be bootable copies ? Or could this affect my back-up copies ?
I would prefer to leave the option "Ignore Ownership" checked as it is my understanding that it would allow the disk to be read by other computers instead of only mine. Is this right ? Could my back-up copies become corrupted or unusable if I leave the "Ignore Ownership" box checked ?
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Joseph Chamberlain

    Hi, Joseph.
    1. The "Ignore Ownership" warning is to ensure that you get a 100% accurate backup of the data you are backing up, including the privileges (Ownership and Permissions) associated with that data. Part of creating a 100% accurate backup includes backing up the filesystem information, such as the privileges associated with those files, not just the data files themselves.
This is covered in the Retrospect User's Guide: see the information concerning the "Privileges Warning" on page 162. You can also find this by searching Retrospect Help for "Privileges Warning" and selecting the topic "OS X Preference" from the search results. This warning can be disabled in Retrospect's OS X Preferences, but one should leave it enabled for the reasons stated above.
    2. You wrote: "I would prefer to leave the option "Ignore Ownership" checked as it is my understanding that it would allow the disk to be read by other computers instead of only mine. Is this right?"No. For example, if you used Retrospect to Duplicate your Home folder to another folder on a FireWire drive, then connected that FireWire drive to a second Mac, you could simply select "Ignore Ownership..." in the Get Info window for the FireWire drive when its connected to the second Mac to have access to all the files in the duplicated folder on the FireWire drive. The "Ignore Ownership" setting is specific to the Mac using the disk/disc, not the disk/disc itself.
    3. Retrospect is generally not the right tool for backing up CDs and DVDs of the type you describe. Retrospect is designed primarily for backing up data on hard drives. This is generally the case with all Backup and Recovery utilities. You could use it to backup CDs or DVDs that contain only data.
When backing up commercial CDs or DVDs there are a variety of other important issues to consider:
    - The first are legal issues, such as "Does the software license permit this?" or "Is this activity legal in my country?" If the answer to either question is "No" then you should not engage in that activity.
    - The second are formatting issues: while you may be able to backup the data and permissions bits off an optical disc, you may not be able to recreate a usable disc by burning the backup to another optical disc. For example, commercial DVDs generally employ some form of copy protection or encryption to prohibit or deter piracy. One can search MacUpdate or Version Tracker for specialized utilities for backing up various kinds of optical media so that one can create a usable disc, but one should not engage in these activities if they are illegal, either by license or by statute.
    - In some cases, there are no legal restrictions, e.g. a home movie of your family that you filmed with your video camera and from which you created a DVD with iDVD or DVD Studio Pro. In this case you're the copyright holder. For that case, there are instructions in the AppleCare Knowledge Base: see "How to copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs."
Please note that all questions concerning Retrospect should be posted to the EMC Dantz Support Forums. These are like the Apple Discussions. Questions posted there are often answered by Dantz tech support personnel. Searching or posting to the Dantz forums are the best ways to find Retrospect answers quickly.
    Good luck!

  • Does upgrading to Snow Leopard change the way CDs and DVDs are burned?

Does SL make better space usage of CDs and DVDs, or is it the same as Leopard?
Does it burn files to CD/DVD using the same file formats? Does it do anything new?
    Thanks - Jess

CDs and DVDs use a standardized format. If they did not you could not play a CD or DVD in your Mac that would play in your CD player in your car or your DVD player in your living room.
Or maybe I don't understand your question??

  • How do i sync one itunes account with two iphones, one ipod touch, and a nano?

I need help in how to sync the one itunes account we use as a family with the two iphones my wife and i have and an ipod touch that my son has and a nano that my daughter has. Please help.

That article applies, as far as I can tell, to all things called iPod X where X can be nano, touch, classic etc.
We don't have two iPhones in the family as yet but as I understand it each device can have separate settings for syncing calendars and contacts. For example my iPhone syncs these over the air with the Exchange server at work so if/when my wife gets an iPhone it would be easy to have hers sync to our computer
To make sure your apps don't inadvertently merge turn off Automatically sync new apps from the apps tab when you connect your device.
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer suggests a number of ways for managing the media content. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
    e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iDevices using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their device. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed and need rebuilding. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

  • Is there a major flaw with Iphoto in regards to organizing and backing up?

Is there a major flaw with Iphoto in regards to organizing and backing up? And how should I proceed??
Here is my story. I have moved roughly 15,000 photos from 7 computers (4 PCs and 3 Macs - basically everyone's computer in the family) onto one external hard drive. The photos were taken by many different digital cameras, are sparsely labeled, and have the most random names and folders. There are a LOT of duplicates. MY MISSION - label and back them up.
The way I normally deal with photos/DATA is this: I plug my camera into my Mac and immediately think about organizing and backing them up. With "Preview" I look at photos (and decide which one I like), create a folder called "where-ever I took these photos" and drag them into that folder. The problem with Iphoto is that you have no ability to control folders, unlike many other applications.
For example, in Itunes you can rename an artist, or even an album, and it will automatically appear in an updated folder. If you alter a photo in Photoshop, it makes you save it is a new file. In Iphoto you cannot make the same "root level" changes without making duplicates. From what I understand, you can place photos into an Album and then export that album (which makes duplicates). Iphoto will rename each duplicate file and then place it in the correct folder. The problem here is I have no idea where the original is to delete it.
Basically I want to create folders called "Trip to Italy 2003" or "Rachel's Wedding" and place all the photos associated with that event in those folders. The problem I run into is that I have a bunch of duplicates. I have heard of a program called Duplicate Annihilator which has gotten favorable reviews. If I import them into Iphoto all the photos are placed in random named folders. I say random because some of the photos were taken on cameras that didn't have the date set correctly. Hence some of my photos will appear in a labyrinth of folders called "Modified / 2001 / Roll 17 / DCM482 / Image25874654.jpg"
I am totally willing to wipe my Iphoto library clean and start again if there is a way to organize the photos as described above. Eventually I will take these folders and save them on a data DVD.
Thanks to anyone who can help.
    Gary

You do not need to delve into the folders within the iPhoto Library via the finder to access any photo. That is all done within iPhoto itself. If you need a photo for use outside of iPhoto read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access. iPhoto is a DAM application - Digital Asset Management, not a folder manager. There's a big difference. You can use keywords, album and smart albums to organize your photos.
If you still have the original files you might consider what I do. I rename each file with the date it was taken using the international date format: YYYY-MM-DD-001.jpg. You can download the demo version ofMedia Expression and automatically rename each folder of photos with the EXIF date and a sequential number. This makes chronological searching and sorting much easier both in iPhoto and the Finder.
If you want to not only manage the photos but the folders then Expression Media will let you do both. It will let you rename files after being imported into a catalog, move them between folders, add ITPC metadata to the files, create virtual albums called Supplemental categories, and much, much more. I use it as my primary DAM and iPhoto for special projects like books, slideshows, calendars, etc.

    3DMark Fire Strike score: 6441
3DMark Fire Strike Extreme score: 3384
    3DMark Fire Strike Ultra score:1262
The excel performance proof the brand new 960 graphics card comes with good a high Cost/Performance Value.
Now, check out this test benchmark score of the renowned game “The Crew”.
The game presents an ultra-quality display, 60 Frames Per Second (FPS)
    FPS: Average frames is at:
    Frames: 3859 - Time: 76828ms - Avg: 50.229 - Min: 43 - Max: 56
The comments of the game for your reference:
There are many types of missions that can be chosen from the America’s map.
Street racing, high-speed collision, breakaway from police, sky jumps, zigzagging, etc… make the game quite dynamic.
Now, when it comes to multi-player matches, the performance has exceeded expectations. Perhaps, it is the killer Ethernet that’s working the magic. Thus, this game is highly recommended if you have the right rig.
The downside is that the display intricacy is not as refined as GTA V and in addition, the game FPS is limited at 60 FPS. However, the overall gaming flow and performance is better than good.
The user's comment for using MSI Gaming 5 motherboard and 960 graphics card:
(The following commends are translated from user’s article, does not represent the viewpoint of MSI) ^^
Recently, MSI GTX 960 just launched so the initial price tag is still adjustable.
According to the current product line, it seems like this GPU is going to replace 750Ti. So once all the stocks (750Ti) at the store empties, we are most likely to see a price drop on GTX960.
Once the price hits the sweet spot, it’s time to try out GTX960 SLI’s performance.
The CP value on MSI GTX960 and GAMING 5 MB is pretty high. But the XSplit software that comes with the product is a bit annoying since the authentication steps are divided into 2 parts to go through for using it.
    Enough said, anyways, GAME ON!

NVIDIA 960 card  + GAMING 5 motherboard = best bundle for budget gaming!
it would be nice to see more testing of hardware-demanding games!

Somewhere at either Macworld or here I learned that DVDSP 2, DVDSP 3 and now DVDSP 4 "internally" are major re-writes.
Support for HD among a few other items along with QT 7 which comes with Tiger means sincerely that one set of applications/OS is not going to be stable.
Personally I think of all the issues possible its DVDSP vs QT.
Unless you move to DVDSP v4 the alternative is to wipe the disk and go back to Jaguar (10.2) or perhaps Panther but avoid upgrading QT beyond 6. I advocate wiping the disk because I'n not sure an archive and install to down shift to an earlier version of the OS is possible. If it is I'd still worry about mis-matched files in all sorts of locations.
