G4 Won't recognize Lacie external drive

My G4 will not display/boot my Lacie external drive. I've used it for several years, so it has worked in the past. We had a power outage and after that it won't regonize the drive. I tested the drive on my Mac laptop and the drive works fine, just not on my G4. It powers up when I plug it into a G4 firewire port, but won't dsiplay/mount on the desktop. I tried rebooting everything and unplugging all other USB and Firewires from the back. No use. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello! Try hooking it up to the book and repairing the drive in disk utility. Then dismount it and unhook it and turn off it's power. Then reconnect it to the G4 and then power it on. Sometimes this will get it to mount. There have been some LaCie's that have had problems with a weak power supply. Tom

  • My new mini won't recognize an external drive (LaCie 1TB  porsche design)....any ides why?

Have a new Mac Mini, using an external drive but I can't get it to show up in finder. It's a Lacie 1TB Porsche design HDD, using a USB connection directly into the mini. I tried it at first by connecting to an open usb on my cinema display......no good. Also no good when connected directly into the mini. Any help would be appreciated!

    Three questions.
    1. Have you got Finder > Preferences set to show external disks?
    2. Does it show/mount in Disk Utility (and if so have you verified it there)?
    3. What format is it?

  • MacBook Pro won't recognize 1TB external drive

    Hey team,
My mid-2010 MacBook Pro won't recognize my WD My Passport 1TB drive.  I was copying files from the drive to my computer when my computer went to sleep (didn't run out of power, just went to standby mode).  Turned computer back on and now it won't recognize the drive.
It is a USB 3.0 cord (computer is only USB 2.0 and the cord works with other drives) and when plugged in, the light turns on and the disk spins but isn't recognized my this or other computers (also not in Disk Utility).
Tried a handful of disk recovery programs but nothing wants to 'see' the disk plugged in.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

yes yes yes,   I warn people about WD drives on this link:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD

    What now?
Only option is to buy the SAME exact HD and swap controller boards,  or pay someone a LOT more $$$ to do the same thing.
its not soldered there, its just a controller/ SATA  "one piece"
They do that to save 50 cents in mfg. costs.
I mention your "issue" in that link.    Which is why you do NOT buy WD ext. HD.
they make the controller board and SATA card one piece.
CURRENT MFG. THAT HAVE controller board and SATA cards as one piece are :  WD USB drives, and Toshiba USB Canvio
However Toshiba didnt USED to do that, but they started doing it at the end of 2013.
    avoid those 2.
To avoid that nonsense, buy Hitachi drives in USB.
    Or, the best option:
Save money and invest in a bare hard drive backup and redundancy plan
    Its cheaper
    less fuss
more reiable, removes the nasty failure point of SATA card interfaces.
    takes up lot less space.
Bare hard drives and docks. The most reliable and cheapest method of hard drive data storage, archives, and redundancies
The best method for your data archives and redundancies, which is also the least expensive, the most reliable, and the most compact option is the purchase of naked hard drives and at least one USB 3.0 HD dock ($40 roughly).
While regarding Time Machine and your Macbook or desktop, your primary backup is best saved to a conventional USB (or Firewire / thunderbolt) hard drive inside an enclosure, the most important part of your data protection begins after your 1st / primary Time Machine / backup; and these are your secondary (most important) data storage devices, archives and their redundancies.
However bare hard drives and docks (below) also work perfectly as a Time Machine backup, this is for home use, since the docking station is certainly not very portable as a notebook Time Machine backup device should be; nor should bare HD be packed around with a notebook, rather remain at home or office.
Six terabytes of 2.5" HD pictured below in a very compact space.
Bare hard drives and docks have the lowest cost, the highest reliability, and take up the smallest storage space
    Drawbacks:
    1. Care and knowledge in general handling of naked hard drives (how not to shock a bare HD, and how to hold them properly). Not a genuine drawback.
    Advantages:
    1. By far the least expensive method of mass HD storage on a personal basis. Highest quality naked HD can be purchased in bulk very cheap.
    2. Eliminates the horrible failure point of SATA bridges and interfaces between external drives and the computer.
    3. Per square foot you can store more terabytes of data this way than any other.
    4. Fast, easy, no fuss and most simplex method of data storage on hard drives.

  • Unibody MacBook Pro won't recognize WD External Drive

I just upgraded from the old MacBook Pro to the earlier model unibody MacBook Pro. I had a WD external drive with firewire 400, and bought an expresscard adapter with firewire 400 so that I could connect to my new computer. the computer recognizes the adapter, but the drive will not power on or appear on the computer. It works fine with the old computer, though. Some help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • My macbook pro retina 13inch won't recognize my external drive (LaCie 1TB  porsche design)

    Hello,
I've had this drive for about 8 months and it's always worked fine. But when i connect it now to my macbook it won't show up anywhere, not with disk utility system profiler, nothing. However it does turn, i can hear and feel it spinning. Also when i connect to a windows it does show up. So I checked if it was the usbport of my macbook but when connecting my ipod there was no problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thx!!

    Hello valleke92,
It sounds like you are unable to see your external HDD when you plug it in via USB. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article named:
    USB and FireWire Quick Assist
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1151
    Check the connections
If you're using a cable, make sure that both ends of the cable are properly and securely connected to your device and Mac. Try unplugging your device and then plugging it back in. If you're connecting a FireWire device, make sure that the cable is no more than 15 feet (4.5 meters) long. If you're connecting a USB device, make sure that the cable is no more than 16 feet long. If you're making a direct connection, make sure that the device's connector is fully seated in your computer's port. If your device also connects to a power outlet, make sure it has power.
    Check the system requirements
Check your device's documentation or packaging again, or go to the manufacturer's website, to verify that your Mac meets the minimum system requirements to use the device.
    Check your device's power
If the device has a power switch, make sure it is on. Try turning your device off and then on again.  Some devices require more power that the bus supplies. If your device came with an external power adapter, always connect it to a power source in for the best performance from your device.
    Restart your Mac
Sometimes a simple restart can resolve issues. From the Apple menu, choose Restart to restart your computer. Once your Mac is finished starting up, test your device again.
    Check the software
See if a newer version of software is available for your device if it requires software. Visit the product manufacturer's website.
    Check your device's power
Make sure that your device is on if it has a power switch; try turning your device off and then on again.
Try a different port and cable
Connect your device to a different USB or FireWire port on your Mac. If you connected your device to a USB or FireWire hub or to a port on another USB or FireWire device that's connected to your Mac (known as daisy chaining), connect your device directly to a port on your computer. Some devices need to draw power from a USB or FireWire port to work; if you connect a device to a non-powered hub (one that isn't plugged in to a power source) or to a low-power port (such as the one on your USB keyboard), it may not work. If you have another known-good cable, try swapping the cable to see if that works. If it does, you should replace the problematic cable.
There is additional troubleshooting in the article if you need it, but it should all work you towards a resolution.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • 2008 iMac running OS 10.7.5 doesn't recognize 2 LaCie external drives.

I recently upgraded my iMac's OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5.  Now it won't recognize 2 external hard drives.  The 4T LaCie is plugged in to a USB port on the mac.
The 5T LaCie is plugged in to a USB port in a 'Pluggable" USB 2.0 10-port powered hub.  What could be the problem?

  • Computer won't recognize my external hard drive. I've tried three different drives, including Mac super drive

Computer won't recognize my external cd/dvd writer, althoughI have tried three altogether, one being the the Apple usb superdrive.

Neither hard drive is working on the mac pro. They do not appear in disk utility.
My chords seem fine. I don't have another cable to try on the Mac Pro. but both cables worked on my 2011 macbook pro with my external hard drive. my 2TB didn't work on my macbook pro however... it didn't even appear in disk utility. I wonder though if that has to do with the usb 3. I know my laptop has USB 2 and my external hard drive is USB 3 and i'm not sure if its backwards compatible.
I have tried all of the USB ports on the Mac Pro, the hard wear seems fine.
I will try resetting the SMC shortly and see if that works.

  • LaCie external drive won't mount on iMAC

    Hi,
My external LaCie external drive won't mount on my iMAC running 10.6.8 but will mount and show up on my PC as working fine, however I am not able to read the information on it as it was formatted for my iMAC. Therefore it leads me to believe this is a software issue.
I have reason to believe someone had changed the permissions and prevented the mounting of this external drive (which belongs to me)  so that the contents won't be found on my iMAC.
    How to resolve this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Cait

    Cait,
Please try a SMC reset, it may take 2-3 attempts for it to work. Look over the instructions below carefully.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

  • Lacie external drive time machine error

I'm using my Lacie external drive (2TB) for my time machine. And it has this problem that every time after I put my macbook to sleep, the time machine won't work, it keeps showing this message "error occurred during back up" (but it doesn't not specify what kind of error). And the time machine can't recognize the history backup from the drive.
However, it will function again if I eject the drive and replug it in.
It's not a major problem, but it's kinda annoying and I wanna know what's causing it.
    Thanks yall.

    Hi George,
The one way I found to get the TM back on the rail is to access my back up disk from finder, choose the sparse disk image. Hit cmmd-delete and banish it.
Start over again. Be sure to be connected by a wired connection as on a wireless network it will take a while. But I guess you have the HD attached via firewire or usb so it should not be a major issue.

  • AirPort Extreme (MC340AM/A) won't recognize USB hard drive

    Hi,
It was working fine (at least that's what I believe) to one point, and then all of a sudden, AirPort utility won't recognize my external HD connected to USB port of my AirPort.
Just to eliminate possible confusion... drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I had another one as well, sitting on my desk that's formatted as FAT32. Both of these drives were connecting fine to AirPort utility till last night. All of a sudden, absolutely nothing happens when I connect either one of these two and turn it on. AirPort Utility/Disks pane shows: NO DISKS FOUND.
I even replaced this USB cable just to eliminate this possibility, still nothing.
Could it be that my USB port just died? I have 14 days to return it and I'm on my second day, so I want to know before I run out of my return bonus.
    Thanks in advance!

OK, I just tried another external HD. This time it was LaCie 1Tb. As soon as I connected it, it was recognized by AirPort Extreme. What's puzzling is, that same thing happened with my SimpleTech 1Tb one last night. It was easily recognized by AE and then all of a sudden AE would never recognize it again.
At first, I though maybe these HDs are not supported by AE, but that's not the case. One is LaCie with Samsung HD103UJ drive inside purchased at Apple store, another one SimpleTech with WD inside, and other two are both super reliable Sygate HDs (never ever had any problems with them).
Hmm... I just disconnected LaCie one and tried SimpleTech one more time and it worked. AE can see it again. What's going on in here? Something is definitely not right.
Can't test this port through printer since I don't have one available at the moment.

  • OSX 10.9.5 won't recognize an external hardrive

I got a new Macbook Air running 10.9.5 that simply won't recognize my external hard drive.... I even tried formatting it with another Macbook Pro not running the latest OSX version. And another device (Smart TV) also recognizes the hard drive so I don't think that's the issue. I also opened disc utility to check whether it would be visible but it's not appearing there either...
    Help please!

Thank you so much!!! This worked for me. I went file>new>library. Then I created a new project in that library, went back to the project in the old library that wouldn't export, I highlighted all of the clips in the timeline and hit cmd-c (copy), then headed back to my new project in new library and pasted the clips there. Then when I hit Share Master File it actually worked! The window popped up as usual and I was able to export. Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you!
