PoweMac keeps waking up from sleep. Not necessarily when email rec'd. Happens even with no apps open.

My iMac won't stay asleep when either put to sleep or when it "falls asleep". I've attempted removing or turning off all peripherals with no luck. I've tried unchecking Wake for Network access (however, I use Logmein so this needs to remain on). Is there a system log I can inspect to see what's waking the computer up? The iMac is connected via LAN, Skype runs in the background as well as a few other scheduling apps (Chronosync for example).
Any thoughts?

New Mac Pro won't stay asleep

Hi everyone. I took delivery of my new Mac Pro a few days ago. It's the highest spec model (12 core, 64gb memory, 2 x 6gb graphics and 1TB SSD). It's connected to two 30" screens and networked to a Windows storage server.
The problem I have is that it won't stay asleep. Basically after being asleep for a couple of minutes the screens suddenly come back on and the login window appears as though somebody has pressed a key. After a minute or so it goes back to sleep and then it wakes up again and continues in a cycle.
I have tried making sure all programs are closed and nothing is running at all but it still happens.
I just wonder if anyone else has had this issue or might know a solution?

Okay thanks for all the help guys, I've discovered what the problem is but not how to fix it.
I unplugged everything but the bare minimum and the computer stayed asleep just fine. I then plugged everything in one thing at a time and tested. The culprit was one of my screens! I have an NEC Spectraview Reference 301 screen. It worked just fine on my old Mac Pro but when this screen is powered up the new Mac Pro will not stay asleep for more than 1 minute. My other screen is an Apple Cinema display and this works just fine on its own.
The solution for now is that I have to remember to hit the power button on the NEC screen before I leave the computer. This is fine but I'd love to find out what's causing this issue so I don't have to remember every time! I'm thinking maybe the NEC has some built in power settings so I'm going to fiddle with them now. If anyone else has any further ideas I'd love to hear them!

Power Mac G5 won't stay asleep

I just bought a G5 dual 2.5ghz (june '04). It won't stay asleep. I put it to sleep and it always wakes up within 3 minutes or so. I have unplugged all peripherals except for the keyboard/mouse which are hooked-up to the back of the 20" ACD. On this machine i'm running 10.4.11
I have reset the PRAM, etc. and turned off all options in the energy saver box.
Is my motherboard fried? What else can I do?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

That's a good question. I googled it but couldn't come up with anything logical.
Do you have an application in your Login Items that may be incompatible with Leopard? Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items. If there are some apps in there, it may be worth your while to jot them down, and then remove them from Login Items. After they've been removed try to sleep your computer. If it sleeps, then (if you need them), add them back in, one at a time, and keep testing to see if sleep is affected.
If the above doesn't work, create another account (I'd give it Admin Privileges) and log into it. Now try to sleep your computer. If it sleeps, you've got an issue (I hate that word) with your account...what, I don't know. You can either continue to try to locate and fix the problem, or (I suppose) you can move your data and settings to the new account....
I'm not sure where the point of diminishing returns is...It make take a fair amount of time and effort to copy your data and settings to a new account. I wonder if an archive and install would take the same amount of time, if you need to go that route...

EMac won't stay asleep

All of a sudden, my eMac won't stay asleep. I've turned off all the settings in Energy Saver (including the Wake options for modem/LAN). I also have no USB or Firewire connections.
I've repaired permissions, optimized system, cleaned caches, and zapped the pram.
I've tested on/off my LAN. I've also tried unhooking my mouse and keyboard.

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.

By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.

MacBook won't stay asleep & pploader going nuts

Last day or two I've noticed my MacBook won't stay asleep more than a few seconds at a time... very effing frustrating.
Aside from that not only does it not sleep, it actually acts up, the fans start running and the comp gets very hot. A quick check of Activity Monitor shows that "pploader" is what is making the fans spin... I'm guessing this also has something to do with the not staying asleep issue. Not a good situation.
FYI, I recently upgraded my hard drive and switched to the Opera browser.
Any ideas, advice? Please?

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep, treats shutdown as restart

My MacBookPro 13" in Snow Leopard 10.6.8 will not stay asleep. In the console, I see 10/17/11 6:09:28 AM kernel Wake reason = RTC, then all the networking comes up, a few other things, and it tries to go back to sleep again - writes out to the safesleep hibernation, then, boom. Awake again:
10/17/11 6:09:49 AM kernel Wake reason = RTC
Yes, 21 seconds later.
All night long. If it's not plugged in, it's dead by morning.
Yes, I've zapped PRAM and reset SMC.
It's not always like this, but when it is, and I attempt to shutdown, as soon as it turns off, it turns back on again. In my mind, that stinks of hardware.

IMac won't stay asleep

I recently installed Lion OS. When i try to put my iMac to sleep, it does so momentarily and then wakes up.

Had the exact same problem. The trusty old mid-2007 iMac refused to stay asleep, whether I pressed the power button (with "Allow power button to put the computer to sleep" checked) or chose "Sleep" from the Apple menu or let it sit for the "Computer sleep" interval. It would immediately wake up again in all cases.
The problem was somehow related to the powered USB hub itself. Removing USB devices from the hub one at a time made no difference. Unplugging the hub from the iMac solved the problem (but also made it impossible to use, as the wired Apple keyboard is plugged into that hub.)
The solution was powering down all accessories (including the USB hub) and the iMac, then turning on power to all accessories, letting them start up, then turning on the iMac. There may have been some interaction between the USB hub, the iMac's PMU, and/or the iMac's USB controller(s) that prevented the iMac from sleeping.
(Note: it might be very useful to follow the advice in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17050677#17050677, which will show the specific reason for the machine waking up. It may not be necessary to shut down all external devices to solve the problem.)

Won't stay asleep!

As of a few days ago, my MacBook Pro doens't want to stay asleep.
Everytime I've closed my machine and left it for a while, when I come back it's burning hot. I open it and it is having some weird problems with the screen lock (doesn't give me the password protect immediately, have to sometimes open and close the machine a few times to get it, sometimes it goes to sleep immediately after I authenticate, etc.).
If I sit and listen, a few minutes after I shut it I hear the CD sound that I would normally hear when it wakes. It does this repeatedly. So, it seems to be going to sleep, but waking up regularly.
I have turned off appletalk and turned off the "wake on admin" stuff.
I have no idea what else would be waking it.

I had a similar situation (I have my own thread about it,) that I finally traced to my USB 2.0-connected ExpressCard flash memory reader. If the reader was in the ExpressCard slot, the MacBook would behave exactly as mentioned here. It would LOOK like it was going to sleep, but it would wake right back up if open, or just get itself blazingly hot while draining the battery if closed. Removing the reader, and it sleeps just fine.
Do you (any of you that have the problem,) have any peripherals plugged in? If so, try going to sleep with everything unplugged. If that solves it, then it's the peripheral. If not, then time to call Apple. (I called Apple, and never did get a fix. But, I did report it when the MBP had only been in customer hands for 2 days, so even the guys at the local Apple Store hadn't worked on one yet.)

IMac 27 inch i5 won't stay asleep!!!

So starting this past Sunday my imac wouldn't stay asleep. i would wake up in the middle of the night to a bright display instead of the normal black screen, i'd put it back to sleep then an hour later back on. I tried getting rid of the wake on network. I even logged out then put it to sleep. It still wakes up.
I disabled external drives. The only bluetooth thing is the magic mouse. Oh and i disabled sharing too. I don't get why this just started happening. Any one have any insight/suggestions???

I even have free apple support, and must have called them 30 times about this, but to no avail. I think the reason that so many imacs do not stay asleep, me included, is because Apple does not want your computer to sleep. With the limited Mac viruses, and the advanced system, why would anyone ever need a repair, or a new mac. Unless your internal battery failed, over time, not allowing your mac to sleep. I think this is a way that Mac designed there imacs. I mean, see how long, you would last w/o any sleep. I had some problems wt my imac using leopard, but wt some work arounds, I got it to stay asleep. Then wt the Snow Leopard upgrade, it failed to stay asleep, no matter what I did. Until I surfed some. I'm not going to recommend any freeware in particular, since each user has different sleep issues. But if you do a search on google, there is a ton of freeware, that will make it sleep, and stay asleep. This should be much easier then lugging it to Apple, or throwing it out the window

Lacie 2big thunderbolt drive won't stay asleep

I am connecting a Lacie 2big Thunderbolt drive to a 15" Macbook Pro late 2013. When the computer sleeps, the drive spins down and then immediately spins back up again, on and on. The drive will not stay asleep, but constantly powers down and then back up, down and then back up, on and on. Ejecting the disk first has no effect. In an odd twist, if I connect the disk through the thunderbolt port on a lacie esata/thunderbolt adapter that has an esata drive also connected and powered on, then the disks will power down and stay down when the computer sleeps. If, however, there is not a powered on esata disk connected to the hub, then the lacie thunderbolt drive will not stay asleep.
I contacted Lacie technical support and they replied "The automatic shut-off feature is based off the drive detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port. If your computer, even when powered off, keeps a little current running through, the drive may not know it is supposed to shut off or on. "
Has anybody else had this problem or connected this drive and had it work properly?

I have two of the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt devices (I hesitate to call them 'drives' because each device has two disk drives in the enclosure) and when I put my MBP to sleep (which is seldom) the drives 'sleep' (no spinning sounds).
I'm not sure why your device would be "detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port" - unless that's something new in the Retina machines (which I don't have!).
If I were you, I would work your way up the tech chain of command at LaCie - I've owned their drives for decades and have always had good luck with their technical support, even if I had to notch it up a bit to get satisfactory results.

My new Macbook pro retina 2013 won't stay asleep

When I put it to sleep by closing the cover or by selecting sleep, it sometimes stays asleep, but mostly not. The worst thing is I sometimes find it with the fan running on high, very hot, and when I lift the lid and log in (it requires me to loging twice), I check the Activity Monitor and it shows at the top, using the CPU, 5 "ManagedClient" processes, each using 100% of the CPU. Something is very wrong. Several times after being asleep, it had obviously restarted and as message on a plain screen said "Your computer was restarted because of a problem" - still an issue but not as bad as the first one I described. I also find, after any and every problem - which threre have been many of, the computer will not restart or shut down. It goes as far as the spinning wheel and stays there and I have to Force power down.
Any expert help here would be really appreciated.

It seems Mavericks has quite a few bugs, including this one. This problem did not occur in previous versions of the OS, even with the same hardware.

Macbook won't stay asleep

Since updating to Leopard a few months ago, my Macbook will not stay asleep. It goes to sleep and wakes moments later. This keeps happening until I have to shutdown.
I brough it to an Apple Genius - he checked all my settings, diabled my infrared and bluetooth. He also checked some log which noted that the wake episodes are being caused by "usb port activity" - but nothing was ever connected to this computer. There's been no change - the thing will not stay asleep!
Any ideas? Again - there are NO settings telling it to wake up at certain times.

Try this:
1) Close all running programs
2) Go to *Activity Monitor* and locate loginwindow under Process Name
3) Click on loginwindow to highlight it and click *Quit Process* in the Tool Bar. A window comes up that instructs you to *Force Quit* - do that.
4) Next you will be returned to the Login Screen and do so to bring up OS X.
Now try closing your computer screen and see if it sleeps.

My iMac won't stay asleep, or it will turn itself off when going to sleep

If I select Sleep from the Apple menu, the screen goes blank, the light waxes and wanes once and the computer wakes up again.
When I allow it go to sleep by itself (my screen saver comes on after being idle for 15 minutes, then it should go to sleep after being idle for 45 minutes), then the screen goes dark, the light waxes and wanes once and then the light stays out, the display stays dark and after a few seconds the fans start running at high speed. It won't wake up by mouse or keyboard, I have to hold the power button for a few seconds, until a faint click tells me it's truly shut down. Then I can restart. I have tried resetting the SMU twice and that did not make any difference. What else can I do to make my iMac behave?

IMac display won't stay asleep while encoding with iDVD

My iMac's display refuses to stay in sleep mode while I am encoding a project in iDVD. (Note that I'm referring to sleeping the display, not the entire computer.) I encode large projects overnight, and I am concerned about possible burn-in, the annoyance of the unwanted light when I'm trying to sleep, and the waste of energy. A search of the archives reveals a long history of the same problem which unfortunately has remained unsolved.
I have tried the following with no success:
1. Ruled out accidental mouse/keyboard strokes as the problem
2. Used Hot Corners to initiate sleep (wakes back up after 5 seconds)
3. Setting the sleep display timer to 1 minute in the Energy Saving settings
4. 3rd party app and widget "Sleep Display" (only works for 10.4 Tiger apparently)
Does anyone have any new ideas about this bug/problem? Does it only affect iMacs?

How can you be sure? It may be some system operation that's doing it.
This may also prevent the display from sleeping, but the next time you're doing this you might launch Activity Monitor and order the process list by CPU. Then when the display wakes up, note what processes (besides the DVD encoding software) are using non-trivial amounts of CPU time.
