G4 won't update past 10.4.2

I recently brought home a Power Mac G4 (mirror drives) from work. It worked fine, but was being tossed because it is obsolete for our business since it cannot run the latest design software.
It had been running 10.2, but I wiped the drive and did a fresh install of Tiger. Everything was going well until I tried to run software update.
After trying to update to 10.4.11, the Power Mac restarted, I saw the apple and gear followed by the starting up bar, but then it got stuck. All I got was a blue screen and occassionally a cursor or a gear wheel. Never started.
I've tried opening in safe mode, but can't. (single user mode works) I've also repaired permissions and repaired disk from disk utility, but still can't update.
After playing with delta updates, I've found I can update to 10.4.2 and everything works, but nothing higher. This machine's specification show it can run 10.5.8, but I can't even install 10.5
Here are it's specs:
Machine Name: Power Mac G4
Machine Model: PowerMac3,6
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.5.7f1
There are no peripherals or third-party hardware installed.
I would be happy with 10.4.2, but it cannot run the latest version of iTunes so I'm stuck at version 4.

Two things I'd try...
Setting Jumpers to Cable Select, or maybe "Single" with some brands.
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the Erase tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to get good installs.
IntelMac Discs will not work.

  • My iPod 3rd gen won't update past 4.2.1

As stated, my 3rd gen iPod won't update past 4.2.1, is this the cap for iOS on 3rd gen, or can it go higher?

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

  • Macbook won't update past 10.5.5

I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8, (Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) I cannot get it to update past 10.5.5. When I go to update it, it says "Software Update doesn’t have any new software for your computer at this time." However, my itunes it on 10.6.3 which my computer says is the current version?? But itunes is on 11.3.... Please help! I want to not only update my computer but update my iTunes as well. My iphone will not sync with my Macbook or iTunes.

I think they told us everything except the Mac model:
(Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM)
That's sufficient to know they can upgrade to 10.7.5.
It could be MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro.
Also depending on the age it may or may not be able to upgrade to 10.8 or later.
Regardless, this tip should help determine if to go to 10.6.8, 10.7.5, or 10.8 or later:
Upgrading to 10.7 and above, don't forget Rosetta!

  • How to update iPod touch 4 Gen to current IOS? It is 3 years old and won't update past IOS 4.2.1.

I had to restore my iPod when I bought a new computer and it won't update the IOS. iTunes tells me it is up-to-date, but all the apps say I need IOS 5. How can I update this? Thanks

If you are using IOS 4, you need to connect to iTune (computer) to update software.

  • IPod Touch Won't Update Past iOS 4.2.1

I have a 16gb, 3rd generation iPod Touch (purchased September, 2009) that will not update past iOS 4.2.1.  I know that the 16gb 3rd gen model didn't get all of the iOS 4 features that the rest of the 3rd gen models did, but I can't find anything on the Apple page about 4.3 that would indicate that some subset of the 3rd gen iTouches would be unable to get the update.  I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and iTunes version 10.2.2.12.  Any ideas what's going on?

It just says that it has the most up-to-date software.  From what I can tell, when they originally released the 3rd generation iPod Touch, the 16 gb one still used the 2nd generation hardware.  At the time, it was still called 3rd generation.  As recently as last summer when iOS 4 was released, it was still refered to as 3rd generation (the iOS 4 release information had asterisks on the 3rd gen iPod Touch to say that various features like multitasking wouldn't work with the 16 gb model).  Now Apple seems to have retroactively decided to just call it 2nd generation.  I'm not very happy since it was sold to me as 3rd generation...

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

  • Bridge won't update past 6.01 and won't recognize Canon 6d

I purchased a canon 6d and it was not recognized by Bridge 5.
I signed up for CC two days ago.  I had all programs updated yet Bridge still does not recognize camera.  The version of Bridge still shows as 6.01.  I am getting frustrated.
    Please help/

Check Photoshop / about Plug ins / Camera Raw
inhere it should show one version of ACR and at least 7.3 (but when updated possibly 8.2) because 7.3 is the first version to support your camera.
Bridge is at version 6.0.1 at this moment so also check PS updates for having the correct ACR plug in active.
But there seems something else bothering you because ACR 7.3 is already available in CS6 that has Bridge version 5. This combination should also be able to provide you the correct previews.
Like Curt stated, can you provide more details about your computer (RAM, VRAM, total- and free disk space) OS system version and how do you try to view the files (card reader, cable to camera)

  • Entourage & outlook won't update past  9/14

Hi, I have an iMac running on OS 9.2.2 and about a month ago, our router died and our iMac was without a net connection for about a month. Once we bought a new router we were able to connect the iMac back to the net and we set up Entourage to update the inbox, which it did, but only up to 9/14. We do have more mail in that email account but for some reason Entourage is not retrieving the rest of it, and neither is our old Outlook Express.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong

what is the mail space limit imposed by your mail provider, assuming it is IMAP or POP3 ? 1MB ? 10MB ?
What is the total size of all the mail you have downloaded (up to 14/09) ?
It's certainly possible that leaving your mail unread for so long has meant you've run out of space in your mail box. Any further mail sent to you since then will have been bounced to the sender saying it was undeliverable.
