G4 Xserve (Tray) won't install Tinger Server

We have a couple of Dual 1GHz G4 Xserve (Tray) which we "inherited" from another group who formatted the drives before letting it go.
We are trying to install a surplus copy of Tiger Server, but the system shuts down upon booting from the DVD. It boots perfectly fine (gray Apple logo) but then it goes to a plain blue screen. Then the spinning beach ball of doom appears, the screen goes blank a few moments later (it fades to black as if it is doing a normal shutdown) and the Xserve powers off. We can install Panther Server without problems.
The Tiger DVD we have is from an XServe G5 (which has since been upgraded to Leopard server); could this be the problem? If it is, why don't we get the customary "cannot run on this system" error like on Desktops? We get no error of any kind, it just shuts off. We have tried both an internal DVD drive and an external Firewire DVD drive with the same results.
Is there anyway to diagnose why the system shuts down? Can I attach a terminal to the serial port and look for console messages? Boot the DVD into single-user mode?

Oops, we used the wrong DVD. I have no idea what the DVD we tried was supposed to do, but install OSX it does not.

I had tried to download latest SAP SETUP 9.0 patch yesterday but were you aware a new version 5 was put up on 16.2.2012 and requires you to submit a Support Message to XX-INT-NAAS-MAKE to request ability to download it?
What's up with that?
I did this yesterday and no response on my request to download it.
Someone must have corrected things, as I can now download it today. No more prompts about exception download and request process.
I wonder if whoever placed the new version on the download site yesteray, had something mis-configured. Also it would be nice if previous versions (at least one back) were kept online for regression testing. Only the 'new' version 5 is shown.

Creative Cloud Desktop app won't install error 207; Adobe server?

Is there a problem with some of Adobe.com servers? My employer just purchased a CC subscription for my work Mac, and the CC Desktop App won't install. I've restarted my Mac, quit all Adobe products, redownloaded the DMG file (creativecloudinstaller.dmg), and checked to make sure my firewall is off. But I still get an error message #207. My DNS servers are set to the same ones that other Macs in my group are set to, and they have CC on their Macs.
I don't know if it's related, but I can't load "adobe.com" in my browser, either. All other webpages are fine, including (obviously) this forum.
I am using OS 10.8.5, connected via Ethernet, and my browser is Chrome.

Thank you for your help, Ned. I also called Adobe help via phone, and he confirmed that my company's server needed to whitelist several Adobe sites. The company had revised their servers not long ago, and evidently did not transfer their old whitelists (which is why my coworkers had previously been able to access Creative Cloud). The phone support person emailed me a helpful list that I could forward to our company's tech support center—but the link you supplied in your response was also perfectly relevant.

Problems installing Leopard Server on Xserve

I have an Xserve with no monitor or keyboard access. I need to install Leopard server upgrade, I read the instructions on-line and in the booklet that comes with the software. Obviously, I cannot press C upon boot since I cant see the monitor nor can I see if I need to update my bios.
I tried enabling Remote Desktop using the kickstart command, but whenever use Chicken of the VNC to connect it says it cant find the server.
I used the "Server Assistant" and it tells me the same thing "Cant find server" but i can ping it and log into it using terminal. I can also run all the other applications like "Server Monitor", "Server Admin", and "Workgroup Manager" just fine.
The server is in another segment because it is in our server room I used one of the server room connection and still cant find server.
Can someone please help getting Leopard installed on this Xserve?

The general answer is yes. But the conditional answer is that you must have the original installation media from the Xserve model before it started shipping Snow Leopard exclusively. This means you would need to have bought an Xserve as recently as December to have the combo OS pack as I believe Apple stopped shipping Leopard around early January (although that might be on BTO models so if you got one from the channel it may still have the original media kit). You need to be mindful of the machine's Boot ROM version. The change of one digit can cause some issues with older installation media.
If you don't have recent media kits, you "should" be able to construct a functional OS by building on other hardware and patching up to 10.5.8. Then cloning it to the new unit.
And, you've peaked my interest. What specific issue have you had with 10.6 and Xsan?

How to Install FC Server on G5 Xserve

We have an Xserve Dual G5 running OSX Server 10.5.5. I'd like to install FC Server but the installer will not proceed as the graphics card is "not quartz extreme" compatible. Can anyone tell me which PCI graphics card(s) will do the job?

Technically, your server is not a supported host for FCSvr. The only PCI GPU still out there for the Mac is the Radeon 9200, and I don't think it is Quartz Extreme qualified. Apple states that ATi cards must be AGP to support Quartz Extreme.

I think you have to turn off Private Browsing.
Tap "Private" on Safari Screen to disable Private Browsing. When top of screen is white, Private Browsing is off.

Email message won't download from server since installing IOS7

Some of my emails both on my iPad and iPhone won't download from server since installing IOS7!

I'm having the same problem with both my iPhone and iPad after installing iOS7. Checked all the settings and spoke to my email provider and everything is set up properly. It's hit or miss which messages don't download from the server too. And occasionally, a message that does download to my iPad, won't download on my iPhone. Everything on my PC downloads properly, it just seems to be an ios7 issue as this wasn't a problem before. My wife uses the same email provider and is still on iOS6.x with no issues. Any help or suggestions would be great.

Server Admin Tools 10.6.3 Won't Install

Each of the Snow Leopard Servers I administer will not install the latest Server Admin Tools 10.6.3. On each server, I'm running 10.6.3 but the Admin Tools installer does not recognize that I'm running OS X Server - it won't install on any of the server volumes.
Server Admin Tools are in /Applications/Server and all updates are in place.
Apple, what gives?

If your server is running 10.6.3 you don't need to install or update the Admin Tools: you already have the up-to-date Admin Tools. The 10.6.3 Admin Tools installer is for installing or updating the Tools on a non-server Mac.

Is OS X Server setup on your MBP as an actual Server running the Services or are you just using it so you can remotely manage another Mac running OS X Server services?

Why won't 10.5 Server install on my G4 Cube?

I have a Cube running Leopard 10.5.8 and I have a copy of OS X Leopard Server I would like to install on it to use as a home network server. But when I run the installer it tells me this computer does not meet the hardware requirements for this software. Which the documentation states is a G5 or newer Intel or a G4 at 867Mhz or better. The Cube has been upgraded with a 1.8 GHz processor using the Freescale 7447a variety of G4 which I recall needed a firmware update to run. I also have 1.5 Gb of RAM. So it more than meets the requirements, it runs Leopard just fine. I can even boot from the Leopard Server DVD but the installer will not let me install OS X Server onto my Cube. I know other people have it running on their Cube, is there a way around this installer limitation or a firmware update I'm not aware of to let me install Leopard Server onto my Cube?

There were several 12" G4 iBooks. Only the first was an 800MHz model.

Why won't Snow Leopard server use an up to date mySQL?

I'm about to have to throw away a perfectly good Xserve since it won't update to mySQL 5.1.33 for Moodle 2.3. I'm almost to the point of deleting snow leopard and installing Ubuntu server in its place. I have no budget for buying an OS upgrade (our budgets have been cut >35%). so if snow leopard server cannot be upgraded (I see no technical reason for not doing so on Apple's part- I have this version on mysql running on an old FreeBSD 7 server for a trouble ticket server).
No, upgrading to a new version of the Mac server is not an option.

Grant, thank you so much for the quick reply. Yes, you're right, the tower is heavy as sin! Our more recent computers out west are iMacs which are much easier for us to deal with. We do have the tower upright. Bill just moved it here to our vacation house for the winter. Is it possible [don't underestimate him] that he could have inadvertantly opened the tower DVD slot and a decidedly important part fell out during the disconnect in B'ham? The discs don't seat themselves. It's like they're too large by just a smidge and won't sit level in the depression. As I close the tray the top of the opening scrapes the disc off. It won't let it go inside so I can begin the struggle with the install itself.

Hello,
Are you trying to install SQL Server on a compressed or encrypted drive? SQL Server won’t install on a drive/folder with these attributes.
Are you trying to install SQL Server on a ReFS file system? It is not supported on SQL Server 2012.
Disable any security/antivirus software and download the media again. Mount the media (.ISO file) and try to install again.

Error Installing SQL Server Express 2008: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission.

I have tried installing SQL Server 2008 multiple times on my machine, and I always receive this error about 3/4 of the way through: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission.
I have tried installing both SQL Server Express 2008 with Tools and SQL Server Express 2008 with Advanced Services, and they both fail the same way. I am trying to do a new stand-alone installation.
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.
Looking into the error, some forums say I have to install it from THE Administrator account, and not an account with administrator permissions; it also cannot be in Safe Mode, because then the Windows Installer won't work. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to login to the Administrator account. I can go to the home login screen, do ctrl+alt+del twice, and attempt to login to the Administrator account, but I receive this error: Unable to Log You on because of an Account Restriction.
Other forums say that in the Server Configuration section, all you have to do is provide the username and a strong password from an administrative account on the computer, and it doesn't have to be THE Administrator. Well, I did that, but for some reason it doesn't recognize my username and password, it says something like "The credentials you provided for the SQL Server Agent are invalid". BUT THOSE ARE THE CORRECT CREDENTIALS FOR MY ADMINISTRATIVE USER! So I'm forced to use one of the accounts without a password, like NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. That's the only way I can get past this step.
Also, just FYI, on the next step, which is Database Engine Configuration, I am using Mixed Mode for the Security Mode. I AGAIN provide a password, and then add my current user (who IS an administrator on my machine!) to the SQL Server Administrators box.
But yet, it fails every single time.
This is pathetic and ridiculous. I must have tried to install this thing 15 times, that is not an exaggeration. I'm posting this on several other forums as well, maybe an MVP or Bill Gates himself can help me.
I have one of the log files from a failed installation. If someone would like to see it, I will post it.

PS : if you are talking about the Sql Server Agent Service, it is disabled for Sql Server Express. It is enabled only for the Workgroup/Standard/Dev and Entreprise Editions
Sorry, but I've tried the suggestion in that link, and it hasn't helped me.
For anyone wonder, the link is talking about the problem in Server Configuration where I enter my Windows user account and password (which is in the Administrative group), but it says the credentials are invalid. The link suggests that you need to either enter your Windows account (which I did, and it wouldn't let me go to the next step), or to use one of the built in accounts (which I also tried, but it gave me the " '' is not a valid login" error during the installation).
Any other ideas?

This particular error means that your computer was not able to connect to the Internet when it tried to install updates. First, check your Internet connection and then try again. If that doesn’t work, try the methods below.
Method A: Make sure that Windows Firewall is turned on, and temporarily disable third-party firewalls
Warning This workaround may make a computer or a network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.
To complete this method, follow these steps.
Step 1: Make sure that Windows Firewall is turned on
To open Windows Firewall, click the Start button, and then click Control Panel. In the search box, type firewall, and then click Windows Firewall.
Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
Click On (recommended), and then click OK.
Step 2: Temporarily disable third-party firewalls
Click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then, under System and Security, click Review your computer's status.
Click the arrow button next to Security to expand the section.
Under Firewall, read the firewall status note. This information will indicate which, if any, firewall is installed and whether the firewall is turned on. For example, for ZoneAlarm, the notice will say ZoneAlarm Firewall is currently ON.

If this method resolved your issue, and you were able to install the updates successfully, you should re-enable your third-party antivirus software.
If this method did not resolve your issue, continue with Method C.
Method C: Disable software accelerator programs
Disable any software accelerator programs that may be running. Some examples of these programs are file download accelerators and Internet speed accelerators.
Note If your third-party firewall is still disabled from Method B, do not open e-mail messages, surf the Web, or use instant messenger at this point.
Step 1: Disable software accelerator programs
To do this, select from the following options:
See the documentation that was included with the program.
View the Help files for your program.
Contact the program vendor. For information about how to contact the program vendor, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Step 2: Install Updates
As soon as the software accelerator program is disabled, visit the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site again, and try to download and install updates.
If this method resolved your issue, you should enable the software accelerator programs that you disabled in Step 1.
If this method did not resolve your issue, continue with Method E.
Method D: Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list
Note If your third-party firewall is still disabled from Method A, do not open e-mail messages, surf the Web, or use instant messenger at this point.
To add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list, follow these steps:
Start Windows Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Note If you are using Internet Explorer 7, and the menu is not available, press the ALT key on your keyboard to access the Internet Explorer Menu.
Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone check box.
In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following addresses, and then click Add after you type each address:
http://update.microsoft.com
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Click OK two times.
Try to install the updates again.
If this method resolved your issue and you were able to install updates successfully, you should re-enable your third-party firewall if it is still disabled. To do this, see step 2 in Method A.

Mark, I've just been through this update issue with two installations. In my case, it seemed intertwined with authentification and indexing not working, either. Upon a transfer of my system disk to new hardware I got hit with the issue and couldn't fix it. Which is why I did a clean install of Win7 ultimate 64bit on my T61p. The install (including update) worked great until I ran the intel matrix storage manager update. This broke windows update. If you surf the web, and include "intel rapid storage manager" or "intel matrix storage manager" and "Windows update fails", you'll see that a lot of folks feel that the intel driver (or how windows handles it) is what breaks update. I tracked this down to a driver, iastor.sys, in windows\system32\drivers. I was able to fix my Window Update by copying an iastor.sys from another recently built machine (should be exactly the same, but this was my wife's T510, but still Win 7 Pro 64) to overwrite the iastor.sys that the intel update changed. To be clear: I couldn't get windows update or indexing to work. I overwrote* the "bad" iastor.sys with one that worked on another computer. Rebooted. Update worked. I just wanted to point out that instead of blindly installing updates to fix problems, folks should be aware that sometimes the update is the problem. Especially as these systems are off warranty and the drivers are not being updated. I've asked elsewhere, so let me ask here: Where is the System Interface Driver for t61p? Not listed anywhere on site, links on the web referring to it are all broken. Is the System Interface Driver now part of another driver program? Thanks!
