G41M-P26 shutting down, hanging w/ DDR3-1600 RAM. Not compatible?

Hello,
I am having problems with this board shutting down or hanging after some time, then refusing to post, sometime later it will POST and allow getting to setup, then it may shut down suddenly.  Sometimes it may boot and go through Memtest for acouple of passes OK, but later shutdown.
I have had the system for a couple of years, but was barely used.  MOBO, CPU and RAM bought from local Tiger Direct as wel matched for working together.  I don't see what may have caused problems to start.  From what I've tested and read lately, I suspect the problem is that the RAM is not really appropriate for the board since it is High Density.  Corsair support has told me that.  I've read articles that say this High Density RAM is designed for i3, i5, i7 (Sandy Bridge Family) and will most likely not work with this MOBO/CPU combination.  Also, reading these forums I've gathered only two 1333 DIMMs have been tested as working on this MOBO and others may not.  The best bet is using 800 or 1066 RAM.
Does this sound reasonable?
For completeness, this some of what I've done these past days:
- try MOBO, CPU, RAM only.  Problems are the same.
- try Fail Safe defaults, optimized defaults, load SPD values of RAM, manual setting of timings for 1333. Sometimes it has POSTed and I connect CD to boot  to Memtest.  Could run for couple of hours without errors or fail in minutes.
- tried 2 PSUs and a bought a new one, problem remains.
- try DIMM on slot 2.
- monitored CPU heat and is within limits.  Anyway, sometimes wil not POST with CPU and RAM cold.
When it shuts down it may not turn back on at all immediately, and needs CMOS clear or sometimes taking battery out since clear CMOS doesn't work.  I've gotten a couple of "Overclocking failed", but I haven't changed the default 200 MHz BCLK frequency.
I'm in the process of looking among friends for 800 or 1066 RAM to test , my local provider Tiger Direct (and probably everybody else) doesn't carry it anymore.  Looking also for a MOBO with (Sandy Bridge CPU) where to test my 1333 RAM.
In the meantime, I could try updating the BIOS, since it is a few versions behind on what was available on Nov 2011.  I see some updates address memory compatibility issues.  I have to see if I have the working Floppy or USB Flash Drive to do it and recover the BIOS if the machine shuts off as I'm doing the BIOS update (which would be a bit scary).
Should I update the BIOS, anyway?
Well, thanks for any feedback and suggestions.
Iván

1. DDR2-800 (5-5-5-18) is faster than DDR3-800 (6-6-6-18). In my opinion, this is your last option.
Interesting, tidbit, but my board can't use DDR2.  Yeah, this is the worst option. I wrote "it's the most expensive", which to me in this case means the worst option, but I didn't actually write "worst".  For less than the 4GB DDR3-800 costs I can get 4GB DDR3-1066 and a 333 FSB CPU!
Quote
2. They will run at 800MHz because your FSB is 200x4 MHz and your max. DRAM ratio is 2:1
Sure.  I ask because I can buy a DDR3-800 for $78, but I can buy the DDR3-1066 for $30 and run the same speed.  Maybe I can even use the 1066 in some other system in the future.  I sometimes get parts from systems other people discard and keep building and improving machines for misc uses.
Quote
3. A processor with 333x4 MHz FSB is your best option.
See the supported CPUs here: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/G41M-P26.html#/?div=CPUSupport
Core 2 Quad Q8xxx, Q9xxx
Core 2 Duo E8xxx
Yes, best option given it's cheaper to get the CPU than a slower RAM. But I didn't get the answer about if I can use the current RAM I have now, given it's description says "Designed for use with all DDR3 motherboards with four memory channels".  Will the 1333 RAM I already have, run on this board with a 333 FSB CPU and setting timings manually for it to run at 1066?
If it does, then I only buy the CPU.
Quote
And forget about that 4x2GB kit. A few years ago they had a 2x4GB Dominator at 1333MHz. Not anymore ...
Just get the Corsair XMS3 CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 kit.
It has been tested on MSI G41M-P33 and I bet it's working fine on G41M-P26
Why do you recommend this RAM when I already have a 4 GB DIMM of DDR3-1333 9-9-9-24 like it?
The only difference may be the line about mine being designed for motherboards with four channel memory.  I would like to know why my RAM wouldn't work if I buy the 333 FSB CPU.

The G41 chipset has been designed for socket 775 and DDR2-800.
DDR3 is a workaround on this chipset.
For this reason all these troubles and incompatibilities ...
Oh, Ok.

Anyway, the most popular G41 config is G41M-P33 Combo:
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/G41M-P33-Combo.html
Many people want to keep their socket 775 processors and DDR2 modules and this mobo is a very good option.
On the top of that, DDR2-800 (5-5-5-18) is as fast as DDR3-1066 (7-7-7-20).
I see it's popular, but when I bought these parts it's what they had on hand at the local CompUSA/TigerDirect store.  Which, supposedly worked together.
It may seem I'm being too thorough with this, and I appreciate you guy's patience.  It's that I'm thinking and looking to in the future buy parts, to use with the parts left over from this combo, to build a slightly better 2nd desktop.  So, my ideal choice is to get a 333 FSB CPU and have it work with my current RAM (pending answer of questions above).    If I can't do that because my RAM won't work, I might get just some DDR3-1066 RAM and run it at 800 with this CPU.  Then the money I would have used for the 333 FSB CPU can go to building a Sandy Bridge system with a new MOBO, maybe some i5 or i7 CPU and the 1333 RAM I already have.   Getting the most out of little money by planning, see?
Thanks for the help, all!

    1. This is a comment on what you should and should not do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The malware recognition database is automatically checked for updates once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
       3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
For the reasons given above, App Store products, and other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandboxing security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
    4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
    5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they're not absolute protection. The first and best line of defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know what is safe?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is unsafe.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
Pirated copies or "cracks" of commercial software, no matter where they come from, are unsafe.
Software of any kind downloaded from a BitTorrent or from a Usenet binary newsgroup is unsafe.
Software that purports to help you do something that's illegal or that infringes copyright, such as saving streamed audio or video for reuse without permission, is unsafe. All YouTube "downloaders" are outside the safe harbor, though not all are necessarily harmful.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. If it comes from any other source, it's unsafe. For instance, if a web page warns you that Flash is out of date, do not follow an offered link to an update. Go to the Adobe website to download it, if you need it at all.
Even signed applications, no matter what the source, should not be trusted if they do something unexpected, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
"FREE WI-FI !!!" networks in public places are unsafe unless you can verify that the network is not a trap (which you probably can't.) Even then, do not download any software or transmit any private information while connected to such a network, regardless of where it seems to come from or go to.
    6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Follow the above guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
    7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good, if they do any good at all. Any database of known threats is always going to be out of date. Most of the danger is from unknown threats. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free anti-virus products in the Mac App Store — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. Most of the real danger comes from highly targeted "zero-day" attacks that are not yet recognized.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
    8. An anti-malware product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An anti-virus app is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
A Windows malware attachment in email is usually easy to recognize. The file name will often be targeted at people who aren't very bright; for example:
    ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!H0TBABEZ4U!!!!!!!.AVI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.exe
Anti-virus software may be able to tell you which particular trojan it is, but do you care? In practice, there's seldom a reason to use the software unless an institutional policy requires it.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
    10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.

Go to crucial.com and let their memory advisor app scan your Mac. It will tell you exactly what RAM is compatible.   Once you have the results you will know what crucial RAM will work, and the specs you can use for other manufacturers' RAM.  For what it's worth, crucial RAM is among the best, and the prices are very reasonable.

    Hello and welcome!
It sounds like it has a hard ware reason. I suggest you take the motherboard out, to see that there are no stand-offs/spacers/distanser left unused creating a short.
Also, remember to have as little hardware as possible when you install Windows. No extra PCI-cards, USB-devices and such.
If the system has worked well earlier, above still rules, but here are some many other reasons for the described symtoms:

  • Shut-down hangs (Thought I wanted to be a Mac, maybe should of stayed a PC)

I bought the hype and bought a Mac for Christmas 2007. In 2008 I am starting to regret I did not stay with XP.
I was happy for a week or two. Now every time I shut down my iMac, it hangs with the desktop background displayed forever. Closing every open application in the dock before I shutdown makes no difference. About 50% of the time it also hangs on start-up with the little prism-circle thing spinning forever.
The problem may have started occurring after installing Adobe Reader but I have no concrete evidence. Google returns many hits of users reporting similar Mac 10.5.1 Leopard shut-down and start-up issues with OS 10.5.1. The solution to fix seems to be the same old fix for the Microsoft Windows-rot problem; blow away the OS and re-install. My disappointment is that with XP I only had to do it every 10 months or so. With Mac OS 10.5.1 I need to do after only 3 weeks. I am concerned Apple software developers have adopted a similar approach to Microsoft; crank it out and patch it till it works.
I am sorry to admit that I am disappointed with my Mac OS X experience. I am not a techno-phobe; I am a professional Windows software engineer with nearly 20 years experience. Vista was not satisfying and I was so optimistic about switching!
One solution is to blow away the Mac OS X partition and use my shiny new Apple hardware to Boot Camp to my Vista partition. However, I am a computer geek to the core and I hate to admit defeat. I want something better!
How can I debug? Surely some Mac genius will have a clue.
Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions,
    -Ed

    Ed,
Based on your description of the problems, it sounds like you have simply encountered a disk error. It is quite common with new computers, regardless of manufacturer.
The remedy is not the act of reinstalling, but rather formatting the hard drive. And, I'm going to recommend that you "Zero" the drive while you're at it. A reinstallation will be necessary only because everything will be erased when the hard drive is formatted.
Rest assured that you have made the right decision. Take a deep breath, relax, then commit the 2 or 3 hours that will be required to get this fixed, and you will undoubtedly begin to enjoy your new Mac. We never have any trouble with any of our Macs, all running Leopard (as they ran Tiger before it). I have even seen our machines reach "uptimes" of over 160 days (that's almost 6 months with no shutdown or restart, and on a laptop!!!). You shouldn't, either.
In OS X, there is no "rot" in the sense that you have used for Windows. Installing as many applications as you like, even hundreds, will have no effect on the way OS X runs. There is no registry. There are no dll files. Once one has a good installation of OS X, it should remain stable, reliable, and fast for as long as the file system remains consistent (in other words, until a disk error is encountered).

  • MacBook Pro did not shut down (hang)...

    Good Afternoon,
About 2 days ago I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion (clean install), and I haven't had any major problems so far in term of system freezes or missing user files. However, today when I shuted down my MacBook Pro it went to a white shutdown screen and showed the gray spinwheel. I waited while Mac it shuted down, the problem was that it didn't do so. After 1minute and 30 seconds I decided to hit  the power button to force shutdown my Mac. I did experienced this one time in SL. I don't know why this happened and the only thwo things that I did before shutdown was to browse the web in Safari watch Youtube videos and some Facebook and when I proceeded with shutdown all my programs were close and also uncheck the "resume" check box option in the shutdown dialog.
After booting back from that strange shutdown I checked the system logs and theres no reference of a improper shutdown whatsoever. I checked my Library file logs and there was no improper shutdown log either.
Has anyone also experienced this issue in OSX Lion?, also is my Mac OK?
    Thanks!

I think I found the pattern: Long sessions where Safari remains open. I will tomorrow do the same thing but rathern than unticking the "reopen windows when logging back in" option I will leave it alone if the error does not happens it means that Safari processes somehow not shutting down properly when the system is shutting down without remembering open windows. If the error happens anyway it would still point to safari but to long safari sessions.

Or, something may have dirtied layout in the middle of updating it.  Both are programming errors in Cocoa Autolayout.  The former is pretty likely to arise if some pre-Cocoa Autolayout class had a method called layout, but it should be fixed.

Can anyone please reply why is this happening
is it because of less logfiles because we have three logfile only or because of log_buffer...

ThanksCheck cron job and other scheduled jobs on your database server. The database is shutdown gracefully not by accident or crash. Maybe a old backup script?

  • L540 shuts down/starts up OK but WILL NOT RESTART

I have a new L540 that arrived inoperatve - power button did not work. Sent it back to depot, and after 2 weeks received it back with a new system board and 3 other parts replaced. After loading Windows 7 without any problems, the first time I went to reboot I found that it hangs after shutting down - in other words, it appears to be shut down, but backlight is still on and there it sits, until I hold power button for 4 seconds. I can hear (very faintly) 5 short beeps as soon as it is down. If I try it in safe mode, the 5 beeps are at full volume.
If I choose "shutdown," it shuts down fine, and comes back up fine after hitting the power button. No difference whether it is on battery, AC, or AC with no battery installed.
I have done all updates including the BIOS, no difference. I have pulled the CMOS battery to reset BIOS settings to defaults. Clues anyone? Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just to rule out any OS or driver issue, I'd suggest you try to enable boot logging in the F8 menu (where you can also enable Safe Mode). Which will cause Windows to log both the startup and the shutdown or restart process to C:\BOOTLOG.TXT.
Then try to restart the system. When it hangs, power it down and power it up again, but this time do NOT enable boot logging (it would overwrite the file you just created). Then have a look at the last few lines of BOOTLOG.TXT - if there is no obvious sign about some driver that is about to be unloaded at that time or you are unsure, you can post the last couple of lines here.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • On start up, my MacBook Pro will just go dark and shut down. It clicks but does not chime. What's happening?

My MacBook Pro on start-up with just go dark and shut down. It makes a clicking or popping sound but there is no chime or other typical Mac sound. I can push the power button again and it will generally power up. It is becoming more frequent with time.
i recently had it in the Apple Store for repair... some cola was spilled on the keyboard.  They replaced the keyboard and through a series of circumstances replaced the logic board, case, and superdrive.
About a week or two afterward it started the odd start-up failure. At first only once every few days. Now almost daily. It concerns me.  I relay on this old Mac for work and even thought I use TimeMachine, it would be quite a hassle to have to replace it.
Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Have you the iPad User Guide? If not, download it from the link under manuals at the start of this forum an tke time to give it a cursory read at the very least.
Also, there is no point in awarding yourself the 'This solved my question' (or indeed 'This helped me') tags since, as you can see, the questioner cannot get any points. (Pardon the pun.) You can learn more about this at
