G5 1.8 dp shuts of by itself 10min after boot up

my pm g5 stated acting up. is shut off on it own. at first it was once in a wile now
it starts up and 5 to 10min later it shuts down. i replaced prom battery and blew the dust out
to see if that would help, made no difference
i'm thinking power supply.
is there a way to check the power with a volt meter?
what pins and what should i be getting?
am i on the wrong track?
thanks fred

Not sure a PS voltage check would be much help, as the PS does allow the computer to boot and run for a short while. It is likely that either the PSU or the PS itself are detecting an overload or overtemp situation and snapping the power off.
You might want to get hold of Temperature Monitor at http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html and see if you have something getting particularly warm.
That may be kind of tough, but what you can do is, on boot, open the Temperature Monitor short-term history window and watch what the temps are doing. This may take a while, but if something is going haywire, it should be obvious. The ten-minute figure is suggestive of temperature as I note on my machine this morning, that was the time interval from wake to general equilibrium of temps. (Of course, your mileage may vary.)
If it is not an overtemp problem, then it is a current loading problem, which may not be a problem with the computer but rather with the power supply. I replaced a seven year old supply last year when it didn't have enough oomph to power my newly-acquired Geforce 6800 video card. It would power itself down when the guts of the card was enabled during boot.
You might want to pull the power supply so you can get a good blast of compressed air through it. That's a bit of work, but they can over time accumulate a lot of dust in there. *Do go outside* when you blow it out, to preserve something of cleanliness inside your work space, as the process can be pretty nasty. That might help things out.

  • Why is this iMac shutting back down 10 seconds after boot?

OK, I've read some of the other similar topics to this one, and I'm just not able to figure this out. I'm working on an iMac DV at work that we wanted to put OS X on. Midway throught the installer questions the machine just shut down. Now when we try to boot, it gives the start up chime, then shuts back down about 5-10 seconds later. It doesn't matter if I'm trying to boot from the hard drive, the OS X CD, or as an external Firewire target disk. I've tried resetting the motherboard, checked the battery to see that it's still at 3.7 volts, and this weekend I tried swapping the Power/Analog/Video board after reading that the Flyback transformer on the board can fail and cause this, but the problem persists. Any ideas? Maybe the logic board has failed? I'm stumped, and I welcome any ideas from you folks on what it might be. Thanks in advance.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I've tried to reset the PRAM as well, it still just shuts down.

IIf the battery was completely drained it might take some time before the phone will respond. Wait at least 30 minutes with the phone connected to the charger. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. If the phone starts up let it continue to charge until it's 100%.
if the broken button will not let you do the reset Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • Has any one figured out how to fix an issue I'm having. My iPhone 5 randomly shuts off by itself. Then it won't turn on when i try to hook it up to iTunes it says its in recovery mode. so then i hit restore and its been stuck on waiting for iPhone.

This happened after I did a software update on my phone about a month and a half ago. My phone will randomly shut off by itself and wont come back on. I had spoke with an apple repair person over the phone who told me to hold in the home button and then plug it into my computer. When the iphone said that there was an error and gave him a code he suggested that I send it in. So I did and about a week and a half later I get it back and its on. Yet the problem still occurs. It shut off twice in the same day and for several hours would not come on. When it did I called apple again and they ran a diagnostic on my phone and said it was a software issue. So then why was it not fixed? They told me they could not duplicate the problem. And now it happens about once or twice a week now. And its happening right now. I have it plugged into my computer and the apple logo with a bar below it has been on for about 20 min now. And itunes is still saying "waiting for iphone."

    Hello Elliiee,
The steps detailed below can help stabilize your iPhone.
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

  • My iphone shuts off by itself, and refuses to charge to any source.

I bought an ulnocked iPhone 4 a week ago in Hawaii. I'm from Argentina, so I got back and asked for a microsim card in my local carrier (Claro), which took about 4 days (they're annoying). When I finally activated my iPhone, I tried to charge it in an iMac, and all I got was the plug icon. iTunes DID recognize the device, but it was not charging. I plugged it to a wall source. The same thing happened. Then, I made a Restore via iTunes. No luck. I tried upgrading the IOS to 5.1. No luck again. The battery percentage stayed always the same. Afterwards, it started to shut off by itself. Connected to a source or not. Everytime the phone was ON again, the battery percentage became updated, which suggested me that there was occurring some charging...
The next day, I took my iPhone to a Reseller here (called iPoint -there are no Apple Stores in Argentina-) and told my problem, but, when I connected the phone there, the bolt icon finally appeared. I thought the problem was solved, but when I came back home, i realised that even the icon was there, the battery percentage didn't change either. Then it commenced to turn itself off again and again. This happens more quickly if I have the iPhone connected to a power source, but it happens anyway if it's not...
I'm feeling like I can't rely on Apple anymore as a safe choice. It use to be a warranty of perfection...
I'm a bit desperate, hope someone can help me...
    Thanks!

  • After 2 weeks my Iphone 4s shuts down by itself and I cannot  turn it on. What can I do. Itunes is telling me to restore the phone but the phone is saying the software isn't available

My Iphone 4s  shut down by itself after a phone call and I cannot turn it on. I took it to istore and they said it was unrespinsive and there is nothing they can do? Anyone has a clue what can be done? When I connect the phone to itunes it indicates that the phone should be restored, however when i try to restore it, it says the "software for this iphone is not currently available" Is there anything I can do other than put this brand new iphone in the grabage?

On computer, at the top of this page is a Tab for iTunes, click it, make sure iTunes is up to date. Also make sure computer Fire Wall and Anti Virus do not interfere with iTunes, turn them OFF to be certain.

  • SAPCCM4X agents are shutting down by itself

    Hello Gurus
A few SAPCCM4X agents are shutting down by itself and this is happening
for systems which have a version 4.6c and 4.5B in our landscape like PCX.. Analyzing the log of one of this agents the
    message below is informed:
    Mon May 9 04:41:10 2011
CCMCTRL: ERROR: csm_show_file: no permission to
    read /usr/sap/PCX/SYS/profile/PCX_G34_zonepcx
CCMCTRL: ERROR: csm_show_file: Please check sapccmsr.ini
I tried to find the profile mentioned in the warning but with no
succes. The cause of the shutdown of the agent is that because the
correct profile is PCX_DVEBMGS34_zonepcx instead of PCX_G34_zonepcx but
why it is looking for the wrong one when everything is configured with
    the profile PCX_DVEBMGS34_zonepcx . I also checked sapccmsr.ini but
    found nothing.
I  can start the agent normally choosing the correct parameter
(PCX_DVEBMGS34_zonepcx) but sometimes the agent shutdown by itself
after 3-4 days with the error message above.
Why the agent search for the wrong profile and where can I change it to
    the right profile ?
Or is there any other way to resolve it.
    Thanks and Regards
    Ashwini

Thank you Mani, I will make this test in only one appl server and monitor.
I will let you know the resul of my tests.

I've had trouble with my Macbook since the first month I bought it. I've replaced the hard drive 3 to 4 times. Now some programs won't work or shut off by itself. Is it possible to ask for a complete exchange of products?

    This may help you: http://store.apple.com/us/help/returns_refund
It would appear that you can ask for an exchange but it doesn't specify any time frame... Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can add to this.
By the way, if you've replaced the drive so many times, perhaps there's something else going on elsewhere.

  • Why my 2009 desktop with OS Maverick keep shutting down by itself

Why my 2009 desktop using OS Maverick keep shutting down by itself?

When it shuts down, the screen blanks (more like turns grey, like the color of the background when on the log in screen). It reboots immediately, so at first the problem was presumed to be restarting, not shutting down and powering back on. The computer is usually very warm, and definitely gets hot easily. A test was run determine when the fan would turn on to start cooling the computer by running digits of Pi, and the tester concluded it was too close within the safe temperatures before it would permanently affect the computer. (I believe this was within 5ºF, but I am not 100% sure.) The times when it will turn off and reboot do not seem coorelated with much if anything. It has done this at multiple times, among running varying amounts of programs and for different lengths of time: right after logging into the user, within a minute of after it has turned off and rebooted, within 5 minutes, 10, 30, even 60 minutes of turning off and rebooting, when only running one program such as Firefox, when running various programs such as Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word, Sticky Notes....
    Basically, it makes no sense.

  • Graphics card issue - Satellite A100-313 shuts down by itself

    I have a satellite A100-313 and I'm using vista.
Everytime when I play games, the notebook shuts itself off after some time. It varies, normally have 10-20min of playing.
And when I immediately turn it on again, I get a black screen but the computer is running. I'd have to wait a while to turn it on again for the screen to work.
So it starts up again and the resolution is changed to 1024x764 (the native resolution is 1280).
I assume it is a graphics card issue (I have a Geforce 7600 Go). I already updated to the latest vista drivers available from the Toshiba site (the one from september).
What can I do to fix this? The automatic shutdown normally only happens when I play games.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hm, sounds tricky.
I can suggest you the following:
Download the latest bios for your machine from the toshiba download site:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp
And last but not least, check if your cooling system of your machine is not clobbed with dust. You can clean it up with a can with compressed air to remove the dust from the fan and the heatpipe-fin.
If you have some questions, just ask.
    Nice weekend

  • TS1884 How do you cope with a system that shuts itself down after a safe boot progress bar is completed?

How do you resolve a problem with a system that shuts itself down after a safe reboot and when the progress bar is completed? Thanks.

Thanks for you response - the honest answer is I don't know, not being particularly IT literate. I do know however that I'm running Maverick if that is of any help?
I also tried the Command R route, along with holding some other keys as per the Apple troubleshooting guide, but no luck. My wife pointed out though that the system was running slowly over the last few days and we had quite a lot of the 'spinning beach ball' before being able to undertake tasks.
Lastly, I inserted my start up disk bit as the system is unable to start I'm now unable to retrieve it. All-in-all a real pain.
    Appreciate any advice. Many thanks.
