G5 1.8 DVD Won't Mount/Startup

Hi folks.
My trusty (yet dead slow LOL) G5 1.8 won't load any DVDs. I am trying to install either Tiger or 10.2.7 (the startup DVD that came with it) and not a single DVD won't load, including other DVDs.
I insert it, it spins, tries tries tries, then spits it out, giving me no feedback. Tried starting up using C during reboot, and the same spit-out.
Any idea what I can do? I don't see it as a current OS issue, but more of a DVD player issue.

It very likely means your DVD drive is dead. Many only last 5 years, but that's no guarantee. You can try using a lens cleaner disc (buy in a media store - often used for home CD players) but that's no guarantee unless you're lucky and it's simply a bit of dust. Will it play a CD? CDs aren't as finicky as DVDs.
With a tower model it shouldn't be too difficult to replace it yourself for US$40 or less.
In the past Pioneer drives have been a safe bet (e.g., from [OWC|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Pioneer/DVR116DBK> or [Newegg|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129023]). However, check [Jeff's January 2010 post about re-branded Pioneer drives|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10839236#10839236] that are no longer really Pioneer manufactured.

Can't install Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro - DVD won't mount

I am unable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as the DVD won't mount. This is an early 2008 vintage MacBook Pro, intel core duo...
I'm using a OS X Snow Leopard install DVD (family licensed). This DVD has been used to install 3 other Macs in my house without a problem (about a year ago), but cannot be used to upgrade my MBP. Actually, this disk mounted on the MBP exactly once - inserted with system up, the disk mounted. Upon running the installed (a year ago), the computer restarted but hung in boot. After getting the disk ejected and the computer restarted, the disk would never mount again. I've defered upgrade for a year but at this point need to upgrade my MBP at least to Snow Leopard and possibly Lion.
The problem doesn't seem to be with the DVD, since it continues to mount fine in other computers, and in fact a borrowed Snow Leopard DVD also will not mount on the MBP.
BUT ... the problem also does not seem to be with the optical drive in my computer, as it can read & mount the install/restore disks that came with the computer as well as other CDs and DVD ROMs. Only the Snow Leopard install DVDs fail to mount.
I've also tried mounting the 10.6 install DVD on my Mac Pro desktop, making it available over the network (ethernet) with DVD/CD sharing. I can mount the remote disk from my MBP that way, but when I launch the installer, the application launches (its own menus are displayed, I can quit from menu, for example) but does nothing -- no windows open, nothing.
I've also tried "Remote Install" (again with the DVD made available with the Remote Install MacOS X application on my desktop), but when I boot the MBP with option held down, the remote disk is not available as a startup disk.
Zapping the PRAM did not help.
Am off to the store to get an optical drive cleaning kit and a blank DVD big enough to burn a new disk image, but would appreciate any further ideas at this point....

Solution that worked: Copy the Install DVD to a USB flash drive and boot from that.

DVDs won't mount - discs ejecting

(Inadvertently posted to aluminum forum -- this belongs here.)
Searched and did not find exactly this problem in prior posts.
CDs still mount and play fine, but now all DVDs won't mount and are automatically ejected. I've looked previously at region settings, decided not to change, now can't even find region settings to verify I'm still set to 1. I don't really think it's a region problem though, as I'm pretty sure I didn't even try to change regions.

Not quite sure what's wrong here, but let's see what System Profiler (Applications>Utilities) has to say about your drive.
Open up System Profiler, then click "Disc burning" in the left-hand column. Next to "Reads DVD" what does it say?

DVDs won't mount after Security Update 2006-004

DVDs won't mount after installing Security Update 2006-004 via the Software Updater in OS 10.3.9. CDs work OK.
I've repaired permissions, reset PRAM, tried booting in OS 9.2.2 but can't get the DVDs to mount/play or be seen by disk utility.
Please help.

How recently before installing the Security Update did you use the DVD drive (for DVDs)? If it was not immediately before the update, the two are probably not related. Also, if you restarted in Mac OS 9 and the DVD drive still does not work, it would seem to indicate the problem is hardware, not software.
You can try opening up the iMac and checking the connections to the DVD drive. Also, it is possible that your PRAM battery is dying (unless you have replaced it recently); that can cause unexpected problems.

DVD won't mount (again !)

This topic has been on a few times, but none of the aswers worked for me.
I have a powerbook 1,66GHz Al that won't mount a DVD-R (noise for about 15s and eject without any messages). The same DVD mount and play correctly on an ibook 1.2 GHz under 10.4.4.
My preferences are : ask me what to do for new CD/DVD. For when inserting a DVD, I tried DVD player and VLC with the same result.
I installed Tiger from scratch and did not reinstall yet any iphoto, idvd, ilife...
I'm just wondering if this is the reason that I cannot read these DVD.
Any idea ?

DVD won't mount on OS X Mavericks

I have some movies that I want to watch on my computer, I have a Macbook Pro (2009) with OS X Mavericks installed. I've been successful in mounting and watching some older DVD's, but these new DVD's I have won't mount, is there some sort of work around or something that new DVD's have that won't let them mount? Or is this with OS X Mavericks and some protection device?

Burned DVDs Won't Mount

Recently after burning DVDs - via DiskUtility and iDVD - burned DVDs will not mount: Instead after inserting and waiting the DVD simply is spit back out. Yes, I've run Disk Warrior; did fsck -y; Onyx.
What can I do now?

It miight be the DVD disks. If they are newer high spead the iMac'ssmart drive may not like them. Have you updated the drives firmware?

DVD won't mount in 10.6.2 - possible bug?

I'm sorry if this seems like a cross-post but I believe I've narrowed my problem to SL 10.6.2 and don't know where else to post this.
DVD will play in standalone DVD player but NOT mount on the computer that created it. I have confirmed that it will mount and play on a bootable backup I had made (10.5.8) before upgrading to Snow Leopard. Another reader posted the same problem on the thread.

The DVD will also mount in 10.6.1 (I had a bootable clone of that installation, as well)
to recap...
I created an iDVD project. Saved as an .img file. Burned to DVD.
Those DVD's will not mount on the computer and OS it was created on.
They will mount on the same computer booted into clones of 10.5.8 and 10.6.1
They will play in standalone DVD players
They will mount on a friends Tiger installation 10.4.9

DVD won't mount or eject, won't shut down.

My Mac Pro won't mount or eject an older optical disc in my OWC BD drive installed in the lower optical drive position. I've tried all suggestions. It also won't complete shutdown. It gets to the grey screen and gets stuck. Have verified and repaired my System drive, have tried using the terminal as suggested here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16582744?searchText=disc%20won't%20eject#1 6582744, which opens the top drive. Is there a command for opening the secondary tray? Have also reset my SMC. I've read other threads about people with discs not mounting or ejecting and preventing shutdown, but all seem to be in the primary optical drive. Any help apppreciated.

I finally opened the tower, accessed the drive and ejected the disc with a paper clip. Now everything works again.

DVDs won't mount

This is asked repeatedly in the hardware forum, but never answered, so I'll try here.
I am no longer a happy camper.
Some DVDs do mount, some don't. There is no rhyme or reason to it. I can purchase a complete box set of "The Complete Five Seasons of __________", and some will mount, some will not. Same with rental DVDs, or DVDs I've burned myself on my iMac. All the commercial DVDs, and most of the DVDs I burned myself, work fine on my cheapo set-top t.v. DVD player.
Doesn't matter if they are brand new commercial DVDs, or if I clean the rented DVDs. So luck repairing permissions, running CacheOutX, Onyx, DiscWarrior, shutting down for 15 minutes, or anything else. Nor do the DVD lens cleaners help -- most of the time they won't even mount.
Any ideas?
Are there any external DVD players that I could plug into my iMac via Firewire?

Try searching for the forum for your specific computer. Most of the computer forums have a DVD/Optical Drive forum where your question would be more appriate.

SuperDrive is ejecting all DVDs, won't mount

I purchased a few movies over the holidays. I put one into the SuperDrive and it spins, hums, and sounds like its scratching. Shortly thereafter the SD ejects the DVD. I've restarted my computer and tried again and now it won't even try to mount. It just rejects the dics. Purchased and burned CD media is fine.
Issue occurs when:
1. Commercial DVD is inserted
2. Leopard install DVD is inserted
3. Burned home movie on DVD-R media is inserted

Is there really no other solution? I have the exact same problem with my older iMac and it drives me crazy. I've been all over the internet searching for a solution. None of these have worked for me, but they have for other people and so maybe they could for your case.
Repair disk permissions in Apps/Utilities/Disk Utility and then restart
Verify disk for any problems and if there are then use your system disk to fix it or /sbin/fsck
One person said that they relaunched their finder to solve their problem
Maybe it could be fixed with a CD lens cleaner or blowing the dust out of the disc drive
I think it is most likely a software problem if CDs work, but then I'd like to fix it rather than a replace and old, but working drive.
Does anybody else know of any possible ways to fix this?

DVD won't mount and won't eject

Hi,
I placed a DVD into my drive this morning and the disc wouldn't mount. When I try to eject it it doesn't eject either. Pressing the eject button on the keyboard doesn't even show the little eject arrow on the display. F12 doesn't work and I also tried resetting hte Power Management which did nothing. I tried holding down the mouse button after restarting but I'm not sure if I held it at the right time or not.
Either way, I have a feeling that won't work either.
Anybody have any other suggestions other than opening up the top and taking the drive out? And if that's my last resort does anybody know a good website that explains how to remove the top and the drive safely?

With the machine powered off, hold down the trackpad button while you turn the power on. Keep holding the trackpad button down until the disc is ejected.
If the drive makes no sound and the computer goes ahead and starts up with the disc inside it, your optical drive is (a) dead, or (b) not securely connected to the logic board. If it makes anything resembling the usual eject sound but the disc doesn't come out, there's a mechanical problem inside the drive, and you'll have no choice but to remove the drive and retrieve the disc manually, then install a new drive.

Blank DVDs won't mount

My iMac mounts DVDs containing content, but ejects blank DVDs without mounting them. Same problem with CDs.I reset the PRAM, but this did not cure the problem. Anyone have any other suggestions? Does my iMac need repair?

You need to check what DVDs your player/recorder can handle.
Go to the System (apple) menu and choose ‘About this Mac’ then click on the ‘More Info...’ button.
In the contents column of System Profiler choose ‘Disc Burning.’
Now look at CD-Write and DVD-Write and Write Strategies in the right hand pane. These are the types of media you can use. Many iMac G4 units could read, but not write DVDs.
If your iMac can write to CD/DVD, you are using the proper media format, and your drive STILL will not burn, then the burn lasers may be malfunctioning or dirty. Try using a CD/DVD cleaner (actually, a spinning brush) to clear off dust and dirt. If that won’t work, then you probably need to replace the drive.

MacBook Air SuperDrive CD/DVD Won't Mount in Win7 Fusion

I thought I'd share my experience with not being able to use my SuperDrive inside Win7 in a VMWare Fusion environment.
Problem: When plugging in the SuperDrive, and selecting use in Windows, the drive is not available and the device does not pull discs in. When un-mounting and plugging the device back in and selecting the MacBook, the device still cannot be used inside Win7 (Fusion). It will not load a disc. In both cases above, if there is a disc inserted, it will eject (indicating that there is power and the MacBook can interface with the device).
Solution: When plugging in the SuperDrive, indicate use with the MacBook (not Windows). Make sure the VM is spun up and you're logged in. From MacBook (not from Win7), go to VMware Fusion->Virtual Machine->CD/DVD (SATA)->Connect CD/DVD. Then the device will work from Win7, load/mount CD/DVDs and read/write.

You can try using a "cleaner" CD that sells for about $10.
It's worked for me on a couple machines, not on some others.
The Matshita DVD-R UJ-857E drive on my MBP quit working a few months ago, and I'm waiting for some time off to send this Mac in for repairs. I bought the extended warranty because of the optical drive failures I'd read about.
I usually use a USB 4 GB flash drive when in the field, and in the office I've got a cheap Sony-NEC DL Burner in an external case for working with PC's that don't have a DVD burner for backing up files. It works well on the MBP also.

CDs/DVDs won't mount

Neither will mount after insertion into drive. In order to mount them, I have to use Disk Utility. I've repaired permissions which didn't affect this at all.
Is this just a dirty drive of some kind of software problem or hardware failure?

Hi holgaguy, it appears you have a Rev A Imac and resetting the SMU will sometimes correct hardware issues. I would try that first if you feel comfortable removing the back of your Imac. Then just read this link, alot of it won't apply to your exact problem but will show you how to reset the SMU. Seen as they will work through disk utilities I would guess the the drives are not pooched. Post back with the result and we can go from there. Bob :~))
