G5 1.8ghz dual - Power, but no start

G'day,
I've just stuck a new CPU into my dual 1.8GHz G5, and it doesn't start up...
When you press the power button, the light comes on, fans start, DVD will spin if there's a disk in there, hdd seems to spin, but - no chime, no video to my 17" ASD.
The power light does not flash - it's just solid.
There is no response to keyboard controls - wont eject, wont control volume/beep.
Have to press the power button (makes the light more intense) for 5+ seconds to power off.
The ASD appears to be connected ok, as it can turn the computer on/off, but there is entirely no picture.
I have no 100% gaurentee the CPU works... came from a guy off the net. He's sent me 2, plus 1 heat sink, so I may just have to try the other and hope it works...
But first - anything I should try?
cheers & thanks
cosmic

Success, hopefully!
I tried re-installing the CPU, and paid a lot more attention to how it was seated.
I think what I'd done, was to not have it properly connected. Unlike the original CPU, it needed an extra "push" to get it in all the way. I had a flash light illuminating the connection, and was peering in through the swiss cheese case to see what was happening.
Powered up, and it booted a-ok. Let it go to the Finder, and opened Temp Monitor. The new CPU was reading 1-1.5°C hotter than the original CPU - that is - about 27 and 28°C.
Currently running a thermal calibration using the Apple Service Diagnostic CD. It gave an intial warning that the (new) CPU Slot Number Verify failed... hoping that's just cos it was a new CPU?
From highs to lows to highs. (Mood that is)
Thanks for your support.

  • Early 08 mbp getting power, but not starting up

Tried to start up my machine after pulling it out of my bag today, and weirdness occured. The status light comes on, then fades, but doesn't turn off. The optical drive and hdd both spin up, the fans turn on, but then everything stops. The status light stays dimmed, the drives spin back down, but the display never activates, no chime emerges from the machine, and several keyboard commands later nothing has happened. It will stay like this indefinately, or at least the longest I've let it sit like that is about 2 or 3 hours. Tried resetting power management, pram has been reset, I've let everythig sit or several hours, all to no effect. Any ideas on what could be wrong? It does travel a decent amount, maybe a jolt knocked something loose? Any ideas or suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks.

Yes it does indeed power down after about 5 seconds of holding down the power button. It might also be worth noting that if I close the lid while it is in this "limbo" state, that the status light brightens back up to full brightness. Don't know if it is worth mentioning, but I just spaced on stating that earlier.

  • Buying a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual with a PPC 7450 Processor???

I just purchased but have not received as of yet a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual PCI-X 1 GB 160 GB. In the Details it is stated: "1.8 GHz DP PPC 7450 (G5) x2 RISC Processor."
A friend of mine mentioned that the PPC 7450 is a G4 processor but it might have been used in what is referred to as a G 4.5 PPC. That the true G5 processor should be a 970 fx processor!
Can someone quickly confirm one way or the other. The machine might ship to me tomorrow (Monday) and I will tell them not to ship if I have been misled.
Thanks much for a quick response.

    If it's a Power Mac G5, then the description that it's a PPC 7450 is wrong (a G4). G5's are 970.
Since it is hard to mistake a G5 for a G4 Power Mac, and G4's did not have 1.8 GHz processors (unless it has a third party G4 upgrade) or PCI-X, it is likely that you are getting a Power Mac G5.
I've never heard of a "G4.5" description. Apple sold G4 Power Macs up to 1.42 GHz in the curvy plastic case, and then sold G5 Power Macs in the squarish aluminum case. You can't put a "G5" PPC in a G4 Power Mac, and you can't put a "G4" PPC in a G5 Power Mac.
But it wouldn't hurt to contact the seller to verify that it's a Power Mac G5 (huge aluminum case).

  • Help? Powerbook gets power but won't start

I have a 1.5 GHz. 12" Powerbook Al (with empty RAM slot) that (reportedly) had a hard drive failure (blinking folder icon at boot)and so the HD was removed and the PB left in storage for approx. 6 months. Now, I am trying to resuscitate this PB and when I plug in the AC adapter, the charge status ring glows green. When I open the lid, it momentarily turns to amber. Pressing the Power button doesn't start the Powerbook. No fan noise, LCD lighting, etc. Battery LED status shows 2 LEDs green when button is pressed. I have tried resetting the PMU repeatedly and tried starting without the battery to no avail. Any suggestions on what other troubleshooting steps I should try? If this is a hardware failure, any idea of what parts may be suspect?
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.
    /Tim Allison

Was this problem solved elsewhere? I'm surprised there was no response at all here. I'm having something pretty similar with my Al-Powerbook G4 15" FW800 (1.25gHz). Every so often, and I think only when it is stone-cold, it will start, although generally not recognize my AirPort card. Otherwise, it gives the startup tone, I can hear a bit of a grunt from the hard drive, and then a tiny bit of motion of some sort, and then nothing. There's a bit of ambient noise from inside when this is going on which I believe to be the disk spinning, but the heads aren't doing anything.
I have tried all the usual recommended steps (resetting PRAM, resetting PMU), can't get it to start at all now. There's a CD in the tray which when I hit the power button will start to spin, but then doesn't do anything. Again, it doesn't really seem to be reading the disk, and I get nothing on the screen at all at any time. It's completely black. Eventually (a couple of minutes) the drive(s) stop spinning, but it continues to draw power and gets hot.
    Any thoughts?

You don't have a Macbook if you are running OS 9 and it's 10 years old. The first Macbook is an Intel Mac that came out in 2006 running 10.4.x. You most likely have a Powerbook. Try posting in the Powerbook forum.

  • How good is a powermac G5 1.8ghz Dual???  Still good?

    Hey all,
So my buddy gave me this computer...owed me some money. I have the new MacBook pro and have been using that.
    Here is the G5.
    1.8ghz dual.
    1.5gb ram
    500gb seagate and a 1tb seagate.
stock video card and a 19" samsung display
Overall, I updated it to 10.5.8, loaded my movies and videos on it and have been using it a lot. Honestly, for everyday use it seems as fast if not faster than my 2.66ghz macbook pro with 4gb ram.
The macbook does cover HD content well which I could not play my 1080P stuff on the G5.
How are these machines? Still good.
Is the dual processor better than two on one chip like intel? I remember when they came out they were comparing it to a 3.06ghz intel.
Just thought I would bring it up
It seems like it pulls pretty well especially for how old it is. I do know the programs will be out of date, but really just wondering your thought on ppc and everything.
    Thanks,
    ~Teal

  • PowerMac MDD 1.25 Dual G4 won't start..

Abruptly this PowerMac MDD 1.25Ghz Dual G4 won't start up. The button lights up, but there is no other reaction from the PowerMac. I have already reset the PMU on the logic board. I have replaced the CMOS battery. I removed the hard drive and copied important data off it. Any other suggestions before taking it to my local Authorized Apple Repair Station.

wouldn't it be more prudent to just replace the "wind tunnel" power supple
As a matter of troubleshooting, no.
    After testing and confirming, yes.
Used and refurbished power supplies are available on eBay.
The 360W MDD PSU, having revamped fans, is the desireable one.
I'm thinking of just taking it in and have them check it out.
A third party repair service might be fine. Apple will just say it's too old.
I'm sure I can replace the power supply myself.

Where is this capacitor located? inside the power supply?
Inside, where it is very dangerous for the non-trained to access and repair.
PSU components hold deadly charges long after they are unplugged.

  • My ipod shuffle 2nd generation is charging but not starting.

My Ipod shuffle 2nd generation 4 yrs old is charging when i connect it to the computer it blinks orange light then when i eject it, it shows green light. But afterwards when i start it nothing happens. It used to work very nicely before but now Its doesnt respond at all. I have reset it several times. Ipod software version is 1.0.4 and i use it in latest itunes. Please help.

That most likely problem is that the iPod's battery is worn out and not able to hold a charge anymore.  So, it appears to charge while connect to USB for power, but a few seconds after it is disconnected, it goes dead.

  • Power consumption with dual power supply

    Hi,
I need to know how dual power supply works, I mean, when you have two power supplies in a router if both of them are working at the same time, or if one of them is working while the other one only begin to work when the first one stops.
And if both of them are working at the same time, what is the power consumption, the same as if only one of them was working?
    Thanks

The implementation details can potentially differ per product category but usually the following is applicable:
The product provides configurable power redundancy modes and choosing a mode dictates whether load will be shared across supplies or whether a particular supply will be dedicated for redundancy.
If both (or more) supplies are working at the same time then both share the power load.
The actual power consumption depends on the power required to run the installed components and is the same whether you use power supplies in redundant or power sharing mode.

  • Attempted to install windows 7 for dual boot but OSX installation now missing???

I've tried to install Wndows 7 on my macbook air for dual boot but got the kernal error on boot.
I loaded from the CD again and it sucessfully installed win 7 but when I start the macbook air up it only appears to have windows installed?
How can I get my OSX back?

For some odd reason when you use bootcamp to install the second OS bootcamp is defaulted as the primary OS you will need to hold option key to select the apple OS then in the sys preference under startup disk select apple as primary.

  • Thunderbolt display has power but no picture and no USB power

I've had my TB display working well with my Macbook for a while with no problems.  This morning I started up the MacBook but the display didnt respond and the USB ports do not seem to be working.  Keyboard and mouse both work when plugged directly into the MacBook but not when connected to the display.  The MacBook is charging from the display so it has power, but nothing else seem to be working.  Any ideas, or am I looking at taking it in to the local store for repair?
    Thanks,
    DB

First try 'resetting' the Display by disconnecting it from mains for about 15 minutes and then plugging it back in. I've only had the problem that you describe once and this was the 'fix' for me.

  • Satellite A100 - message: Toshiba Power Saver already started

When I switch on with mains power connected, I get a false error message which says "Toshiba Power Saver already started".
How do I get rid of this message permanently?

Thanks for the response. I removed the Toshiba Power saver software through the Control Panel, no problems. I then downloaded the lastest software from the Toshiba website, a file named PA100-TPwr-Svr-7.00.03-XP.exe . At the completition of loading this program, I received an error message "A fatal error has occurred. The program will be terminated. Code 0x2." Subsequently, everytime I reboot the A100, I get this message. I tried uninstalling the new Toshiba Power saver program but am prevented from doing so by this error message. I also tried going back using thew System Restore but even going back two months, I get a message to say changes cannot be made (reversed). My computer is a model no PSAA8a-0D5010.
    Any hints??

  • Studio Display: power but no video??

I have a Studio Display monitor connected to Quicksilver G4 via the ADC cable. The monitor is getting power but there's no video. I don't have access to another ADC-equipped computer for testing. Any ideas as to where the problem might lie?

Check to make sure your video card is firmly in place in the AGP or PCI slot. If l not firmly in place it can cause a black screen on boot. Also, is the backlight on the monitor lighting up when you start the monitor? Try holding a flashlight or other bright light up to the monitor to see if you can see anything, if you can see something then its working, but A) the backlight is turned down, or B) the backlight is dead.

While trying to execute the steps given in the starting guide I found that it requires 2 csv files (NYSE Daily 2009 and same for NASDAQ) for mashing up data agaist S&P 500
I tried to get from web, but unfortunately not getting the required data
Can you please provide the test data (the 2 csv files NYSE Daily 2009 and NASDAQ daily 2009) using which I will resume my work in Power BI?
