G5 + 1080p LCD

Hey fellas,
I just upgrade my TV from a 720p sharp to a 1080p panasonic. I used an hdmi cable before with no problems. when I hooked up my panasonic, the native resolution was not working properly and the image was flickering on and off and the colors were way off. I managed to open preferences and change the resolution 1280x720, which seemed to fit the screen best and give the most clarity, however the white bar on top of the screen with the file, menu, apple etc tabs is cut off. Now i just turned my computer back on and the color is way off, although the resolution is fine. whites appear blue and blues are red. I did the display calibration, but it didnt fix anything. Any ideas? Thanks for your time!

turning the tv off and on while the computer was on fixed the color issue. however the screen size is still wrong.

  • Mac Mini G4 Unsupported Video Format DVI to HDMI 42 Phillips 1080P LCD TV

When connecting my Mac Mini G4 to my 42" Phillips 1080P LCD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable I get a message on the TV "Unsupported Video Format" message. I can connect my PowerBook G4 using the same cable and it connects great.
One thing I have noticed is when connecting my Mini via DVI cable to my 17" LCD monitor the screen is a fated red. But using a VGA cable the screen is fine. I don't know if this is having to do anything with the issue of connecting to my LCD TV.
    Any suggestions?

Make sure the connections are good and tighten down the thumb screws on all connectors. If two monitors are giving problems with DVI, it could be there is a hardware problem with the DVI port on the mini.
Also, try starting in Safe mode (boot while holding down the shift key) and see if you get a useable screen in that case. If you still get the unsupported video format message, then that would further suggest some hardware problem with DVI.

  • Macbook to 1080p LCD

I just purchased a 1080p LCD HDTV. I was wondering the best way to connect my macbook to it? thanks!!!

Hi, such a cable may not exist directly, but if you use a mini-DVI to DVI adapter, there are DVI to HDMI cables available. I got one on Radio Shack clearance not too long ago. Your mileage with it may vary. Good luck.
Additionally, Monster Cables makes a very nice mini-DVI to S-Video cable that worked for me like a charm.

  • External 1080p LCD Monitor with Intel iMac

I have a 17" Intel iMAC. I would like to connect it to a new 40" 1080p LCD Monitor/TV. With the mini-DVI cable, and DVI to HDMI cable, will I be able to view 1920X1080 resolution on the external monitor? Will I be able to use both mirror and extended display modes? I am aware the internal graphic card can support up to 1920X1200 resolution.
    Thanks.
iMAC Intel Dual Core   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to the discussions!
You should be able to see it in the full 1920 x 1080 resolution. You can use either mirrored or extended desktop, but not both at the same time. It is an "either/or" proposition.
Does this new display have a DVI port? I would use that if possible. I understand that HDMI is digital, but you will not get a better picture by using it over standard DVI. HDMI is DVI plus audio.

  • Macbook Mini-DVI to VGA...   To 1080p LCD tv

I was interested in buying a new display for my macbook, using the miniDVI to vga.
Then i saw that new TV's have VGA ports on them to act as moniters, and thought.
42" TV... or 19" moniter... hmm
Currently i have the miniDVI to video cord so i can use my TV as an additional moniter when playin games etc.
But its not clear enough to play the games on that screen.. its good for some videos
But text and games its not good at all.
Is the Mini DVI to VGA a good port?
Would i be able to hook it up to a TV or if not a bigger moniter and have it as clear as the display attached to the laptop?
    Macbook
    2.0GHz
    1GB ram
Vid card is just the old standard one when the black/white macbooks were still new.
Not the cool new ones with nice video cards

I have a 40 lcd tv and have my macbook hookuped to it using the mini display port to vga and it looks really good, but i only use it for watching movies. Dedicated monitors are still better for reading text or playing games

  • My HDMI 1080p LCD keeps disconnecting whenever it switches input or turns off

I've connected a new HD LCD to my Intel iMac (Model 10,1) running 10.6.7.  I'm facing the problem that whenever I switch inputs in the TV to another HDMI input, or turn the power off to the TV, the iMac things it's been disconnected, and reverts back to only the single iMac monitor.  Is there anything I can do to prevent this, so that the iMac thinks that it's on all the time?  I've currently got a Mini-DisplayPort to DVI connector, and a DVI to HDMI cable plugged in to the TV.  Could this be the issue?  If I invest in the Mini Displayport to HDMI directly, will that help?  Before I spend on that I'd like to make sure that will help.
    Any thoughts?

The miniDisplayPort-to-HMDI converter I've got is this one from Amazon: Kanex iAdapt MDPHDMIV2 HDMI V2 - Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support
It supports audio as well on my 21.5" iMac. I use it to watch iTunes HD movies, and Blu-ray movies as well when switching over to Windows in Bootcamp.

  • Insignia 32 inch 1080p LCD NS-32L450A11, computer hook up to tv not working

I hope someone here can help. I purchased this tv over a week ago and just picked up a vga cable to hook up my computer to it. My computer is a HP Pavilion a6300f and was purchased back in 2008. So it only has a DVI and VGA hookup, and I'm using the DVI for my monitor. I followed the directions in the manual to the letter, and made sure that the cables were screwed in tight, and the TV was not detecting the VGA hook up. And I've tried to do some searching for this problem, but no luck so far. If someone can help I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You must use the Function keys on the HP computer to extend the desktop to the TV.  The TV must be on and connected when the computer boots.  Use the appropriate Function key combo to cycle through the various desktop modes...You'll be able to clone your desktop to the TV, extend your desktop to the TV, or make the TV your primary video monitor.

  • MacBook Mini-DVI to HDMI not working on Vizio VO22LF 1080p

I recently purchased a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter so I can hook my macbook to my Vizio 1080p LCD TV. The macbook detects the TV correctly but no matter what I do the TV never detects the macbook on the hdmi input.
Doing some searches I saw discussion of a bug with 1080p that and a trick to get two 1920x1080 resolutions to show up in the display options but it never works for me.
When I connect to my 42" Panasonic 720p everything works great.
    Any thoughts??

This sounds a lot like the problem relating to an Apple disclaimer about the mini driving non-coherent displays which seems to especially affect the original G4 mini. See here under the "Video" sub-section:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP65
The problem is the timing for 1680 x 1050 will often have a dot clock above 135 MHz. There are really only a couple things you can do; one is to use the VGA interface as you have been and the second is to use a program like SwitchRes X to lower the pixel clock and stay with the DVI interface. If you want to go the SwitchRes X route, download and install it (get the SwitchRes X Control Panel version and not the full version of SwitchRes X) and then write back to this thread and I can take you through the steps you need to perform. • Is there a way to make the ATV stay on the 1080p resolution setting?

I have my ATV (2.0.1) hooked up via HDMI to a 1080p capable receiver and then to a SHARP Aquos 1080p capable LCD panel. Every time I start up the ATV it has defaulted back to an output of 720p and I have to manually change it to 1080p (which gives a much better picture). Is this a bug or maybe an HDMI glitch?

I have exactly the same problem. I have a Sharp AQUOS 65" 1080p LCD going through a Pioneer Elite video/audio processor, all via HDMI. When I set the resolution of the ATV to 1080p it is accepted by my LCD. But when I turn the LCD, ATV and video/audio processor off and then back on, the resolution of the ATV has moved back to 720p.
I NEVER had this problem with ATV software version 1.0. For months the 1080p setting operated exactly as it should on the ATV. Same equipment. Obviously something was changed on ATV 2.0 and now 2.0.1.

  • How to play i-movie on New LCD TV

I am in the process of researching the new Hi rez 1080p LCD tv's
Looking at all the inputs etc. on various models
What specifically do I need to look out for to connect the Mac and use the TV as a monitor with sound ?
Besides a normal TV set up, connected to the Cable box, and to Surround sound speakers, I would love to able to play my i-movies in full rez on my LCD tv in stero sound.
Is there a way? How would it be done.
Can I play i-photo slide shows with music Thru the LCD tv as well?
Is it played thru the Sound receiver?
The TV has three HDMI inputs 2 S-video Inputs
    I would be using a G-4 Powerbook
    or a G-5 tower
depending on the length of cables or converters?
I can't find this info anywhere relating to Hi-Def TV output

you need the proper AV cable which you can get at an Apple Store

  • Using 32 LCD as montior

Any practical words of wisdom as far as my wanting to use (in my case) a Sharp 32/1080p LCD as ,my monitor? I know many mac mini users hook LCDs of various shapes and sizes as monitors, but these seem to be utilized as media centers and not as primary desktop monitors.
I was going to upgrade my 20" cinema display to 23" since that is the maximum screen monitor the mini will handle because of resolution limitations. But at $749, I figured I give a shot at a nice 32" 720P or better yet 1080P for about the same price point.
I know the resolution won't be up there like the dedicated computer monitors, but feel the size would be a better trade off. The reason I'm "wanting" a screen bigger than 23" is to help me better layout web pages I build while having other screens open in my other programs. I understand that a 32" monitor will probably have to rest at least 3 feet away from me, but I'm not sure the font sizes will be readable. Any experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks, you are right (my bad) I neglected the fact that I can get more resolution from a quality 22 or 24" dedicated computer monitor such as these 2...

with their 1920 X 1200 resolution vs the typical 32" LCD 720p/1080p in at around 1366 X 768 resolutions. Gee, poor me, guess I'll have to sacrafice with a little ole 24" monitor : ). I apologize for the extraneous urls...

  • LCD TV v's Monitor

    Hi All,
Firstly I really don't know much about LCD TV's, Monitors etc...
We need to buy a new tv for our bedroom and we are thinking a smaller (30'') LCD tv would be the way to go. Now I know they have DVI input so I can also use it as a display for my MBP.
Question - Are there any beneifts, or what are the important things to know about this setup? I use the MBP to edit in Aperture and Final Cut HD (can I edit in HD on the LCD?), will the LCD tv be ok for this?
The reason I ask is I can probably only buy either an Apple display (24') and a very small older TV or a newer LCD tv.
Your thoughts / suggestions woudl be much appreciated, the sales people in the stores are hopeless (especially when you mention you use a Mac).
    Cheers.

I have tried the LG LCD 37 inch and it had huge issues with the Mac. The PC input is limited to 1028 x 768. When you hook up the DVI to HDMI cable and take it to the HDMI input you will see something along 1270 x 768. The feed comes across as an interlaced signal. When this setting is selected and you check off the overscan box you will get a full screen picture. That makes me wonder if the tv actually does 1366 x 768. I tried the Westinghouse 32w1 monitor/LCD TV and it actually does 1366 x 768. It has a built in DVI connector. I also have tried a Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500. The Sony is a reported 1080P LCD TV. It has 2 HDMI inputs and a PC monitor input. The strange thing is that the max input for the TV using the PC monitor input is 1400 x 1050. I tried a DVI to HDMI cable and I was able to get an interlaced signal out to the TV. Still suboptimal results. I looked at a JVC 40 inch LCD TV at 720P, however, the PC input on that set was limited to 1024 x 768. Overall, the best TV picture came from the Sony, however, I just cannot believe that they limited the PC input to 1400 x 1050. You have to wonder what the TV manufacturers are thinking. The problem is not a Mac problem. It is clearly the TV sets.
The Westinghouse seems to be the most consistent performer in regards to attaching a laptop. They take pretty much the full input from the Mac.

  • LCD/HDTV help for a newbie

I am a longtime BB customer and am finally taking the HDTV plunge.  I have narrowed it down a bit to the Insignia NS-L37Q (32" is too small, 40" is too big) versus a Dynex DX-37L150A11.  I am not a cinephile so the basic features are fine with me and the price is right (I am a cheapskate).  It is a 37", 1080p LCD HDTV.  This is for basic TV, sports, DVD viewing.  Please indulge a few newbie questions.
    1) The one small reservation I have is the Insignia's native contrast ratio at 1400:1 and brightness 500/cd/m2.  Should I be concerned that it isn't high enough?  I note the Dynex 37" in the same price range is 4000:1 but 450/cd/m2.
    2) I have DISH satellite but may switch to DirectTV but assume both are similar.  I assume I'll need a special HDTV box from them, correct?  And HDMI cable to connect from box to set?
    3) I have never bought a service plan in my life but am considering one for this.  The Insignia already comes with a 2 year warrenty and this extends it to 4 as I understand it.  Is $89 on a $549 LCD worth it?  I'll be ticked if a pixel goes out in the middle of the screen, but does "burn in" still even happen on these units?
    4) I run the DVD player through my stereo currently (because I am too cheap to buy home theatre sound) so would I just hook that up the same way through the audio inputs?  I understand it won't be digital or anything.
    5)  It has 3:2 inverse pulldown.  Is that good and why should I care?
Any help from the experts here is greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I would recommend the Insignia, as both are Best Buy house brands but I've noticed better image quality and reliability with the Insignia's as opposed to the Dynex tv's.
    1)  While the Dynex has the better contrast ratio, the difference between 1400:1 and 4000:1 is not very staggering.  Disregard this comparison.
    2)  Yes you will need a set-top-box from DirecTV, fortunately you can pick these boxes up at the store and can subscribe to your DirecTV account while you shop.
    3)  $89 for 2 years of peace of mind on an LCD tv is worth it, though I don't think it extends the contract to 4 years, rather, the service plan covers "normal wear and tear/heating issues/power surges", whereas the standard 2 year warranty only covers manufacturer's defective parts and labor.  $89 is fair, cheapskate or not.
    4)  Your DVD player setup will work fine, but consider getting a blu ray for next Christmas, you'll thank me later.
    5)  Don't worry about this.
I don't claim to be an expert, but I am an enthusiast, so any "experts" out there feel free to chime in and correct me if I may be wrong.

  • Toshiba 32BV702 LCD has lost all power.

    Hi all,
I bought a brand new Toshiba 32BV702B 32-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Freeview (to give its full name as advertised!) roughly 2 months ago from a UK Argos.
It has worked beautifully ever since, no problems what so ever. Until today. It was in standby mode as usual, i.e the red LED was glowing in the bottom left hand corner. I hit the ON button on the accompanying remote control as per usual, like I always do to turn it on, and the red LED disappeared as usual to signify the TURN ON command being processed, and then absolutely nothing happened.
The screen is completely black as if it has no power, the LED displays no colour at all, there is no audio and pressing ON/OFF on the remotre control does nothing. It is basically as if the TV isn't even plugged in, except for a very low volume, repetitive static/buzzing sound coming from the speakers. Every half second or so it just buzzes with a very light, quiet static sound, which proves that there is power coming from the mains, but the TV is just not responding.
I am obviously quite disappointed as it was not a cheap TV by any means and I have had it for less then 10 weeks. It is almost as if it has just completely blown out!.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
    All the best,
    Ben G.
