G5 adding 2nd DVD drive

I purchase a 2nd DVD drive , Pioneer BDC - 207 , it mounts, but, if the computer goes to sleep or I power down, the drive is not found.
I have un-install then re-install the drive.
Pioneer customer service  says "
Double check the power setting in the Mac and make sure to disable them.
When the power setting are turned on it will send the drive to sleep when
not in use as an attempt to preserve power. However since our drive is not
equipped with a Mac firmware the computer is not able to wake the drive up
therefore in most cases it requires that it be disconnected to restore
operation. "
Other than the power  settings in System Preference, is there another power setting for this 2nd drive ??

What computer do you have?
This forum is Mac Pro desktops which all have Intel processors.
There a separate forum for the Power PC (G4 and G5) desktops

How did you connect the second DVD drive?
Just how are you "installing" the drive?

  • 2nd dvd drive?  How to open?

    Hi,
Real quick question. Im new to macs. As you can tell by my posts.
How do you open up the 2nd dvd drive to use? I know you can hit the eject button on the keyboard for the top drive but what about the bottom one? Its prolly something real simple. but i cant figure it out...

They do not sell Combo or DVD ROM drives for Mac Pros. A DVD reader/writer with DL, the works- a/k/a "Superdrive" is only about $50. I cannot imagine anyone even sells CD burner/ DVD readers or DVD read only drives at all. What would that cost? $5 or $10? Apple sure doesn't.
Open the side and have a look and see how many you have. Or read your invoice.
At least the complete lack of a 2nd drive solves that eject not working conundrum.

  • 2nd DVD drive... How to open it?

I installed a 2nd DVD drive on my G4 mirror doors, but can't figure out how to open it to insert a cd?

    Hi
I think you need to hold down the option (alt) key and press the eject key on the keyboard.

  • Added 2nd Hard Drive - Which Format Do I Select?

I just added a 2nd hard drive. It shows up in disk utility. I know I must format it before I can use it. But, there are 6 choices in the Volume format drop down: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Mac OS Extended , Mac OS Extended case - sensitive journaled, Mac OS Extended case - sensitive, MS-DOS file system, UNIX File System. Is there some information on the Apple site that explains these 6 formats?

Actually, when I have had a drive with problems like bad blocks, I find Intech Speedtool ZoneBench to show up problems the best. It also includes ability with another part of the suite to map out bad blocks (never found any) but I did have to do a 7-way erase with one drive that kept having problems.
An entire 4GB area went from normal 56MB/sec down to 31-33MB/sec - either partition off that area, or just realize it has this problem with longer seeks (the time to go from inline to spare sector - some SCSI drives locate spares on the same track to reduce seeks.
ZoneBench can be set to a 511MB test file, and can test 60? areas per volume, so you can force read/write to over 33%.
The most important areas of a drive that cannot have any bad blocks are the areas that are not part of user allocated space, partition tables, directory (maybe) and the area of the journal file.
If it solved a problem 1% of the time or less, would vendors include it in their "how to setup a drive for end users"?

  • I want a 2nd DVD drive for my iMac

    Hi
Have a new 24" Alloy iMac and well, having moved my main computer from a PC to a MAC is great, iLove it! Problem though is there are lots of times where I could utilize a 2nd CD/DVD drive. Apparently the external drive for the MacBook Air is exclusive to that (which doesn't make any sense to me - Apple would sell a ton of these if they made them non-specific rather than to only a small % of sales). So I've been poking around here on the forums and I've seen some referenced to MacSales.com site - but with such a beautiful machine as an iMac, I can't bring myself to getting one of these butt ugly things. Found a handsome LG CD/DVD with Lightscribe external drive, but no evidence of Mac support.
Where can I get, or how can I get an external DVD drive for my Mac? I'd rather avoid patching if possible.
Better still: Apple - update the MacAir drive to be universal for your machines please!
    Thanks!

OWC (macsales.com) would be a good source, since they are very Mac-centric and should know what works well and what does not work well with Macs and Mac OS X.
They may be boxy and "ugly" but those full-sized tray-loading drives are the most reliable type. Plus with a tray-loader, you can read the strangely shaped and mini- discs that would choke a slot-loader.
If you want more style, LaCie is also Mac-oriented and they have some choices.

  • I need a 2nd DVD drive, wich one?

I have an HP DVD writer from my old PC. i tried hooking it up on my MacPro but when i try to open it up, it doesnt open because the faceplate is too big, it wont let the drive open completely. I also have an LG DVD Drive, but the same issue, the faceplate is too big and it doesnt open. Which DVD should i buy? i want DL capabilities, RW + -.
    Thanks guys

Hello everyone. I deal with a similar issue with regards to adding a second optical drive to my Mac Pro. Checking the prices, it was cheaper, not to mention more flexible to purchase a seond IDE optical drive online. I purchased a new Plextor, though ones from Lite-On, NEC, Sony, and Pioneer are also good choices. As mentioned above most of the DVD recorders sold currently have a similar faceplate, therefore with a little modification, they can be made compatible with the drive lid on the Mac Pro's case. Although one can saw the faceplate to make it fit, I found that using sandpaper of a medium grit along the bottom edge made trimming the faceplate a bit easier. You can of course remove the plate, usually by applying steady upward pressure (perpendicular to the disc tray), but I found that the drive may sound a little louder without the faceplate. Also, make sure to set the drive jumper to cable select, same as the top optical drive. Hope this helps.

  • Install 2nd DVD Drive in Mac Pro 1,1 or 3,1

Would anyone have info on installing a 2nd optical drive in either the 1st-Generation or 3rd Generation Mac Pro?   Seems ticky to open the optical compartment open.  Thanks.

The instructions can be found here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA177/en_US/MacPro_OpticalDrive_DIY.pdf
Edit: Note, you need to remove the bezel off of the drive drawer before installing. And make sure you keep the latch on the back of the computer in the up position, it locks the drive carrier in place when in the down position. It can take some wiggling and effort to get the drive carrier out.

  • Adding 2nd Optical Drive into Mac Pro (first gen) makes both unusable!

    Hey all,
I recently purchased a second DVD drive to go into my first gen Mac Pro 2.66Ghz.
The installation went a little rough, although OK in the end. The IDE cable seemed reluctant to want to stay in a safe place.
Upon booting however, and now had no optical drives installed!
Even System Profiler reported no disc burning capabilities except my external USB CD Burner.
I've taken the second Optical Drive out, which by the way was one of these: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Samsung/SHS202NBLS/
My original Sony (Disguised NEC drive) drive is now working again, although what on earth happened?
Should I try swapping the drives around? E.g the Sony on the bottom and Samsung on top?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated,
    Thanks,

    I have an idea,
Perhaps the newer DVD Drive I have here is "better" than the currently installed one, and therefore doesn't like being connected as the slave (bottom) to the "weaker" master (top) drive?
Could it be something like that?

  • Adding 2nd hard drive

I have a Power Mac G5 dual 2ghz with 1-160 gb hard drive.
Want to hook up a second drive.
What are the positives and negatives to adding an
external drive or an internal drive?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with Ben. If you just need more storage, internal is the way to go -- faster access, more convenient.
If you're using the new drive as a backup, external is better because whatever fries your computer (necessitating a restore from backup) would most likely damage internal drives far faster than an external backup which you can unplug and disconnect between backups.
So, what are you planning to use it for?
Hope we helped. If we did, please award points!

  • I must be going nuts...adding 2nd optical drive

    Hey folks,
wondering if you can help me out:
mdd g4 1.25 - superdrive working fine...want to add another into 2nd bay.
followed instructions in manual, but I wanted to add the 2nd drive to the ata-66 bus.
The problem is that I can't see where the ata-66 bus is on the logic board.
I can see the ata-33 connections right near the front HD chassis (which has 1 HD in it).
is there a website or document which explains what is on the logic board or maybe someone has directions on how to do this.
i'm feeling frustrated b/c i'm not a complete dolt, but i can't figure this one out....
    Cheers,
    Keebler

    Hi Forrest,
Ok. I think i'm almost there I see the ata-33 and ata-66 connectors. i also see the connector (assuming it's ata-100) from which I have 2 hds connected to it in the rear carrier.
In the front carrier, I have 1 hd connected to the ata-66.
i see the ata-33 goes underneath the optical carrier and loops behind to connect both opticals.
i did that and the g4 recognized them so that's a wuhoo, BUT i would like to put them on seperate
bus' so I can burn 2 dvds at once (I was told doing so would be better for data transfer while burning and keeping them on the same would result in poor burn speeds).
    thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Keebler
PS. i could take pics if it would help?

  • Permissions problem after adding 2nd hard drive and putting user home there

I added a 2nd drive and put my user home on this. The reset password tip from command line at startup never sees this new volume, so I have been having to add my user to most files manually. Almost everything works now except iMovie. When I try to import it says I probably cannot write to the events.localize folder. I have tried symbolic links, manually editing the permissions, etc. no luck. Any ideas?

ill try the fsck right now
    heres the output you requested
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda3 7.3G 3.9G 3.0G 57% /

    /dev/sdb1 38G 93M 38G 1% /home
    total 46G 4.0G 42G 9%
    thats interesting.
/dev/sda3 is showing its old values almost like something in the partition tables didn't get updated?

  • Need help adding 2nd hard drive

Hey guys whats up. I need some advice about adding a second hard drive. Right now i have a WD 320GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive running on the primary IDE. Everything is fine but i wanted to get a smaller and faster drive for the operating system and for some small video editing. I recently purchaced a Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive.
    Now the questions:
     1. How should i assing the drives? (which master/slave/cable select)
     2. Also am i going to have to do anything since im going to have one on the IDE and another on SATA?
     3. Any advice that you have...
What i was thinking is this...i should disconect my current HD and hook up the new one to SATA port 2, and set it to master(or CS maybe). Format it and then install the operating system. Once OS installed and working, ill hook back up the IDE drive and make the setting to slave(or CS maybe). Then uninstall the operating system from the IDE.
    Thanks for any input

    Thanks NovJoe,
What setting (master/slave/cable select) should i set the IDE drive to? And yes i do want my OS on the raptor.
Thanks for your advice...didnt think that anyone was going to.

  • Dv7 3085dx won't power on after adding 2nd hard drive

I'm attempting to add a 2nd drive to my laptop (dv7 3085dx). The drive is a Seagate Momentus 750GB drive (ST9750420AS). I purchased the drive caddy and connector from Newmodeus. The laptop will not power on after the drive is installed in the 2nd bay. Everything is fine if the drive is disconneted.
    Any ideas?

Are you absolutely sure you got the right caddy and cable from newmodeus? They sell several different ones for the dv7 series and they look similar but are not compatible with each other. I understand the reluctance to try hot-plugging it.

  • Adding 2nd hard drive(IDE 40gig)  to B&W G3 w/ 9gig SCSI drive

Recently got a 450 B&W G3 with a 9gig SCSI ultra something drive in it already and i would like to add a 40gig IDE drive as a second. the scsi drive is hooked through a scsi card and is the main drive. i want to just add the second drive for more storage. when i plug up the drive and start up, it does not see the drive. I know i'm missing something little to get this to work, but I don't know alot of the techincal terms and meanings to ask the right questions. any help or if someone can direct me to an older article that might help would be great!!! Thanks!!

    Hi, Papa -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Make sure the drive is jumpered correctly. There is a block of exposed pins at the same end of the drive where the power cable and data cable are attached. On those exposed pins will be one or more little plastic-looking things bridging pin pairs - these are the jumpers.
There should be a label affixed to the drive in the vicinity of the jumper pin block; this label depicts the various configurations of where jumpers should be placed for various settings.
For your model Mac, you should use the jumper setting for "Master". Exception - if the drive is a Western Digital brand, it may have a setting named "Single" - if so, you should use that when the drive is the only device on the bus.
If you have not yet initialized (formatted) the drive, do so. Most drives are not usable until they have been prepared for a Mac by initializing the drive; initializing a drive places Mac drivers on it, and structures the platter for use by the OS.
You can use OSX's Disk Utility to initialize the drive. There should be sufficient info in OSX's Help section to use Disk Utility to do that. Some items of note -
    • If you want that drive to be accessible when the machine is booted to OS 9 at some time, be sure to select the option to install OS 9 drivers.
    • Select "Mac OS Extended" as the format for the drive.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro won't boot after installing 2nd DVD drive

    All,
I purchased a Pioneer DVR-117D from Mac Sales and after installing it in my new refurbished 2008 Mac Pro it won't boot. My MP will boot if I remove the drive. According to the Mac Sales website this drive should work fine in my MP. Any ideas as to why this is happening. I literally just got my MP today and installed the drive. Is it the drive or the Mac Pro. Thank you all.

The drive was set to master, I switched it to CS before I left for work but haven't tried reinstalling it. I will try when I get back and let you know if it worked. Thank you again.
