G5 AGP: Nvidia 6800GT or ATi X800XT?

Hey all,
I just wanted to check out a couple experiences, and see if anyone has in fact compared the Nvidia with the ATi. I did, and I have two things to report.
a) according to XBench, the Nvidia is quite a bit faster.
b) Looking at World of Warcraft at 1920x1200, the ATi blows the Nvidia away. Don't want to start some in-game talk here, but the performance of the ATi in WoW is about 2x to 3x better than the Nvidia.
Anyone has anything to add to this?

Rob has put them up against each other:

I'd pick the X800 XT because it only takes up 1 slot and I don't need two dual link ports.

  • Nvidia 6800 or Ati x800xt?

    Hi there,
Which card is the best, nvidia 6800 or the Ati Radeon X800XT?
I was going to get a new Dual Core but the lack of graphics card upgrades has put me off so i'm sticking with my current machine but i want more gameing juice etc, so i need to know which of the two cards are best but also the quietest? I have a Verax silencer fitted to my current 9800 Pro and it does run silent, i would not want any more fan noise etc.

The X800 has a variable-speed fan and more sophisticated heatsink than the 9800 and, when not stressed, is not quite as quiet as the 9800 with the Verax, but not bad. You can still hear the G5 beeps if that gives you an idea.
At full-stretch... well, once you get on the .50-calibre you won't notice it anyway.
Unfortunately the X800 is expensive in UK - 400 quid in the Apple Store - but there are other, more affordable, suppliers ...

  • Pixel corruption with ATI X800XT Mac edition

To allow running a 30 inch Cinema display, I installed an ATI X800XT AGP card in my Powermac G5 (3.5 GB RAM). After working well for a few days without excessive fan noise, it developed pixel corruption; whether in the post screen or after booting the OS. I replaced the card with another; this time it worked for two weeks before developing the same problem. Any solution?

In case anyone who's in the dark about this problem (I had as well), this is what I've found in ATI's web site:
    http://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=30606
In spite of the lack of details as to what the problem is, is irrelevant. Unless your super-tech savvy and can solve the problem yourself, don't waist time asking them to fix the card. Tell them to replace it PERIOD (if ATI has any in-stock).
I bought my card from www.macsales.com and didn't send it to ATI because of all the rumors I heard about ATI's lousy costumer service (MAC people get the bad end of it). Long story short I was LUCKY to discover at the time, that they had an "open box" *+NVIDIA 6800 ULTRA+* for sale. After sending them a copy of ATI's report and sending a picture of my display, they sent me the card and only paid the difference in price.
If I were you, I would send it back to whomever you bought the card from, and let them deal with it on your behalf (depending on their sales policies) or get your money back. I do that with most products I buy.

  • ATI x800XT -- how loud is too loud?

    I recently upgraded my G5 from a fanless ATI 9600XT to a ATI x800XT.
I was wondering how loud this new card should be?
Upon powering up the G5, I can hear the fans spin up quite loudly compared to before the upgrade. I'm assuming this is the new vid card? I thought for a minute that I installed something incorrectly as it almost sounded like something was vibrating for a few seconds but then the noise smoothed out.
After 10 seconds or so, the fan noise reduces but still can be heard during simple tasks like web surfing. It adds a bit to the overall G5 fan noise that I'm used to but isn't too bad.
So far, I haven't tried any graphics-intensive workout for the new card. How loud will the fan get then? As loud as the full blast fans that I used to get with kernel panics or what?
    Thanks for your insight.

    Thanks, Samsara.
As you said, I'm probably just not used to one with a fan and wasn't sure what to expect. It is well seated, and so far, the only time I've really heard it is during startup (where I think it comes on full power for a few seconds).
During "regular" use, I can hear it but, overall, it only adds a little to the general fan noise. It doesn't ramp up and down during regular use.
I haven't taxed it yet, but as this card was near-impossible to get, I'll definitely be keeping it.
    Thanks for your reassurance, Samsara.

  • ATI X800XT flash problem

I have two x800xt's I am trying to flash but am getting a strange error message when I try to flash them.
Card 1 - ATI X800XT PE - ID 4A50 (on another label on the back of the card is X800XTP-VIVO)
    Card 2 - ATI X800X - ID 4A4B
I am flashing the card following instructions from The Mac Elite website. Here is what happens to both of the cards.
I have checked the ROM file, tried renaming it, re-downloaded it and nothing works, Booting from either floppy or USB stick gets the same results. The card is recognised but the ROM seems 'invisible'. Any thoughts, ideas or simillar experiences? The ROM is the 64k reduced from The Mac Elite website

You need to look on the ROM chip for printed ID.
I have a picture of a 25LV512 on this page (ignore the "C", makes no difference):

The linked page shows a picture of a jumper applied accross the pins 3 and 8 for the "hardware unlock".
This following page describes a "software unlock":

  • Witch compatible Tv Tuner to use with nvidia 6800GT ?

    Hi guys !
Currently i have an MSI Neo2 Plat, with an All in wonder Ati 9600  pro.
I want to change for a nvidia based card 6800GT + buy a new Tv Tuner card.
Witch Tv Tuner will be the MOST compatible with : a) my motherboard and b) my 6800GT ?
I hope i can have some answers or some REAL life experience, because i don't want any problem
    THanks !!!
    TanGU.

    TanGu,
If anything don't buy the new TV-tuner card from nVidia, eventhough it has timeshifting abilities. Although it might seem nice to have yet another nVidia-card hooked up your system, the card sucks pretty hard. I bought a XFX nvTV card 2 months ago for ~ €90,- (120,- USD) and I'm sorry I spend so much money on this.
The software and remote are completely fixed, you can't program any button yourself. But thing that annoys me the most is that the card is very slow in changing channels. So some quick zapping around is a pain in the ass with this crappy tuner.
A friend of mine use to have a 5 year old Hauppage card and that worked great.

  • K8N NEO2 PLATINUM HANGS WITH NVIDIA, WORKS WITH ATI???????????

    HI
I have endless problems with nivida cards on a MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM board.  I have tried 4 different nvidia cards and they all hang on any 3D app or game. NFSU2 looks like it lags in the menu already. It stops for 2 sec then goes again for about 10 secs.
Slot in any ATI grachics card and it works 100% for hours with no problems. I am runnig a 480W Antec psu aslo, so there is no power problem.
    Anybody have any idea???????????????????

well..i tried to oc my vid with 78.01  my comp rebooted in just a few seconds of game play...so i reset clock speeds to stock...got rid of 78.01's and installed 80.40 betas...so far so good..and i got this email replay from BFG asking for any fixes..here's a summary of what they said
"If you check the HardOCP forums as well as many others, issues with NF3 chipset motherboards are rampant. They seem to be limited to the implementation of a 64-bit processor with AGP architecture cards, fast ones in particular, but NOT limited to NVIDIA cards. People with fast ATI cards have the same issues... so don't act without investigating.
We have no point of action we can do for you in the matter. The chipset and drivers for it are made by NVIDIA, then implemented by different companies on their products. The exact same can be said for the GPU, chipset on the graphics cards and drivers for them. We're a manufacturer who uses their technology and unified drivers for our cards, but we make "OC" cards that run faster than NVIDIA designed their GPU and chips to run. NVIDIA can't control "how" the companies implement their technology, but makes every effort to create drivers to accommodate issues that crop up during the product 'life-cycle'."
ill say this...i personally havent seen anyone with an ATI having this issue..if anyone knows of that...please let me know...as much as i bashed ATI....i feel like im left with no choice  but to buy one(x850xt pe)if no one plans on fixing this for us..any imput is appreciated

  • Specific NVIDIA vs. ATI question

I'm about ready to go pick up a new 21.5" 3.06 iMac with the bigger HD and upgrade to the ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics with 256MB memory.
But I'm also considering a refurbished 24" 3.06 with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 with 512MB memory
It seems that most people prefer ATI to NVIDIA, but with the extra 265MB, will the NVIDIA deliver better performance?
Also, is there a quality difference between the new monitors and pnes on the old 24" iMacs?
I'd love some advice and am looking forward to ordering one or the other by tomorrow.
    Thanks!

Prices are close enough that it's not an issue. EPP price on the 21.5" 3.06 with the upgraded graphics (256 ATI) is $1,409. When the refurb 24" (with the 512 NVIDIA) shows up on here, I think they're $1.349.
I'm headed to Apple store tomorrow. Unless I'm unimpressed by the 21.5" (and if they have one in stock) I'll probably bring one home. (Unless, of course, I fall in love with the 27" and decide it wouldn't look too ridiculous on my living room coffee table.)
I still suspect the 24" is the better deal (it is about 41% off its original price, but I'm just talking about the specs alone), and I know it's silly, but a part of me sjust wants to have the latest thing. I bought my G5 just a few days before the first Intels came out (I knew they were coming, but I was worried about being able to use all my Power PC software) and it'll just feel good to have the computer that's on Apple's splash page (a smaller version of it anyway)... at least for a few months.

  • Nvidia 8800 or ATI Radeon (x2 or x3)?

    Hi,
I am new to Mac world, and about to order a Mac Pro configuration.
I am not sure what to choose for the videocard...?
    2x ATI Radeon
    1x Nvidia 8800
    or 3x ATI Radeon ...?
What would be the criteria to choose the good config for my needs?
If I plan to use only 1 or 2 displays, is the nvidia enough?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Tom,
There is another thread (or three!) on the sleep / restart problem. And I don't have any more info than what is said here and on other forums and news outlets.
I would sit tight for now, at least until the 8800s are actually shipping (March 1?) and get your RAM 3rd party to save $$$. Not sure the difference between 2.8 and 3.0 is going to be big enough to justify. 3.2, yes, if you need cutting edge.
Keep your eye on AYM and Barefeats.

  • Dual Apple LED  Display (24") with NVIDIA GeForce GT120 & ATI RadeonHD4870

I have recently purchased a MacPro4,1 Processor Name:Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz with 6GB memory with the NVIDIA GeForce GT120. Then I purchased a ATI Radeon HD 4870 to be able to run the 2 Apple Cinema displays and an external monitor.
I installed the ATI in slot 1 and the GT120 in slot 3. I use different motion software and the computer seems to recognize as the primary card the GT120 and not the ATI. This creates a problem with the different software I use as it uses for processing and rendering the GT120 and not the ATI faster card.
This is also visible when I go to system preferences and change the display preferences and try to shift them around, the first display is the one that has the GT120 card (which is in slot 3)!!!
Also sometimes I get funny characters in some windows.
I spent the extra dollars to get an ATI card but I am not using its capabilities which is inviting me to disconnect the GT120 card... but then I cannot use the second Apple LED display due to its Apple's miserable connector policy. This is telling me that next time I should not buy the monitors from Apple as its connectors are not trully compatible with the hardware they sell.
I searched everywhere but cannot find similar cases which is very strange. Any solution friends?

You could remove the NVIDIA GT120 and connect the second display to the ATI card's DVI port with a DVI to Mini DisplayPort converter.

  • Bad performance, nvidia 6800GT, v.180.22

    Hi,
The following text was written for some minutes ago.. Turns out, I got some new (strange) information. Please read the update below.
Just though I'd help out people who might have been in the same situation as I was; after upgrading to kernel 2.6.28 and nvidia 180.22 driver I got terrible performance when viewing videos. Even Firefox lagged when I scrolled my Twitter page. So, as I was starting to check how to downgrade, I also read nvidia wiki here on Arch linux. It turns out that my xorg config was missing one simple line which made my life better:
    Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
I haven't done a thing with my xorg conf since the upgrade, so I dunno why it worked better without these three words with my old driver (v.177.82)
Anyways, hope this helps someone else out too
    UPDATE:
Okai, so I restarted my computer and it turned out to be just as bad as before ..What I did when it got better was to edit the xorg cong and restart x with ctrl+alt+backspace.. So, after the restart and when I found out that the video once again was lagging i just restarted x with ctrl+alt+backspace and suddenly I could play videos without lag. wtf? So, if anyone could try to explain this to me, I'd be once again happy. Thank you! :-)
    UPDATE 2:
It seems that a cause of the problem can be found in post 12 in this thread.

So it turns out, (II) NVIDIA(0): Detected AGP rate: 8X is only found in the "good"-log This corresponds well with what danielomen suggested too; when I checked nvidia-settings it said PCI on bus type and after restarting X it said AGP 8X.

  • NVIDIA 8800GT or  ATI Radeon X1900 XT

Im in the market for a new graphics card form my Mac Pro. I was planning on the ATI but I now see there is a new Nvidia card so which would be the faster/better card to go with? I want the performance for use in Second Life as well as aperture.
I cant find a comparison between them so any advice would be welcome
    Thanks

The 8800GT is in the Apple store now as an upgrade option. Haven't found anyone yet who has actually obtained one and tried it in the pre-2008 versions of the Mac Pro, but other forum discussions here indicate it should at least be 'compatible'. Whether the Nvidia card can run at full performance in the older Mac Pro is undetermined. I think the older Mac Pro has a lower spec on the PCI Express slots.
I am using the ATI X1900 card right now in a December 2007 model Mac Pro, in Second Life, and it ROCKS. (Ceera Murakami is my SL name - I create whole sims for a living there). I get between 20 and 50+ FPS in SL with it. Typical FPS in a Human avatar (as opposed to a heavily scripted group of furries) is 30+ FPS. The only caveat with the ATI card and SL is that due to a driver issue (that ATI is supposedly well on the way to fixing with a new driver, expected this month), you need to set up Second Life's user preferences to only try to use 265 MB of the 512 that is actualy on the ATI card. Using the full 512 is reported to cause Second Life to crash.
Nvidia doesn't have a great track record for making OS X drivers that are compatable with Second Life. Just the opposite of their track record in the Windows world, where Nvidia is king and ATI drivers have issues.
If it was me, I'd wait until more info is in on the compatability of the Nvidia card with the pre-2008 Mac Pro, and on the viability of that card with the Second Life application. If you want a card that will definitely work now with the older mac Pro and with Second Life, get the ATI X1900 card and set SL's VRAM pref to 256.

  • G5 + ATI X800XT

    Hi,
I've installed a Radeon ATI X800 XT in my G5 SP 1.8 and I've noticed that the fans of the G5 are continuously working at a higher speed, which makes a constant disturbing noice.
Is there anyway to fix this problem?

    Hi Luck,
I tried reseting the SMU, but it had no effect.
Then I got "Hardware Monitor" to better understand what is happening when I am using the X800XT instead of the 9600XT. I noticed that the fan RPM are the same (front=1000,rear0=800,rear1=800), althougth the front is clearly spinning at a higher rate with the X800XT. As you mention, the slot power raises from 132 to 518, but what seems related to the extra noise is the "Fan Pulse Width Sensors" of the slots, which increases from 1% to 5%.
Besides, when the plastic covers is not replaced, the "Fan Pulse Width Sensors", the noise, and the temperature are nearly the same as with the 9600XT, which is quite strange, no?
Do you know a way to better control the fans.
    Alex

  • NVIDIA 7300 vs ATI HD 2600 (on iMac)

Trying to compare the current top-end iMac to the current bottom-end Mac Pro. It's quite tricky! My particular area of interest is editing High Def videos in FCE. Also running Parallels with Windows XP.
I'm curious to know how the iMac's ATI Radeon HD 2600 compares to the NVIDIA 7300 GT. I know that the ATI 1900 is supposed to run rings around the NVIDIA, but what about the HD 2600?
Also, how can one compare the 2.8GHz Core2 extreme to a pair of 2.66 "Woodcrests"?
I really like the expandability of the Mac Pro (the first thing I'd do is sling a couple of 1TB disks in).
Of course I'm also watching what upgrades come out this quarter, but money IS an issue, and I'm hoping that we'll see a lot of cheap current generation Mac Pro's around that I could buy with 24" screen for a similar amount of money as a comparable iMac.

The 8800GT is known to be a killer performer, only being around 10% slower than their fastest card, the 8800 Ultra.
It is also, roughly, 2X faster than the X1900 XT. I can;t wait for Apple to sell the upgrade.
The rest of the Mac Pro's - comparing the 3.0 GHz Harpertown vs my current 3.0 Clovertown shows almost no difference - 10% or so. I am surprised with all the extra memory bandwidth and the greater cache and the faster dividers and all that the speed difference is so low.
The 2.8 Harpertowns are essentially as fast as the 3.0 Clovertown's, perhaps even faster. Faster still with the 8800GT card, yet almost $1,000 cheaper than the 3.0 system was yesterday - and with BT and an extra GB of RAM to boot.
I'd say that's a great move by Apple.

  • NVidia 6800GT & PCI Slots - Keeping Things Cool & Copacetic

    Hi Gang
    Fully aware of heating issues, especially with Pre-Dual Core G5's and poorly cooled ATI Video Cards, I'm trying the following arrangment with my G5 2.0 Dual Core;
Need to take advantage of all PCI slots, but using NVidia 6800 GT, (with decent cooling), I put a FirmTek eSATA card in the middle 8X PCI slot, and Sonnet FW800 Cards above and below the FirmTek eSata card.
Took temperature reading of nVidia at start-up; 118 Degrees Fahrenheit. After about an hour, it went up to 129 Degrees Fahrenheit. Warm but not Hot to the touch. I'm optimistic ...
Why no 'internal' SATA Card approach? Because I don't like the drive rack arrangment which clearly obstructs the cooling fans. Got some great advice here from BD, and japamac. I think this was the way to go

    Hi-
Sounds like you are happy with your results?
Temps aren't bad at all, and now you have tons of external connections!
BTW, Nvidia used a Coolermaster heatsink/fan for the graphics card.
Nice to have a cooling specialist on the job.
