G5 constant sleep/wake/sleep/wake

I have a 1.8 Ghz G5 that will work perfectly for a few days then will starting acting up.
The fans all kick into high speed, the computer freezes up, screen goes black, then it comes back on and works for about 2 minutes.
We have swapped out RAM, swapped drives with an identical G5, comepletely disassembled it and cleaned out all dust, re-installed OS, zapped PRAM, unlugged it and let it sit for a day...
After each of our tests it works for 2 days then starts up again.
Any ideas?

the computer wont stay awake long enough to check the logs
and there are no hubs of any sort - other than the Apple keyboard.
We took out non-apple factory RAM - still did it
Swapped RAM from a working G5 - still did it
Swapped HD from a working G5 - still did it
Swapped monitors and keyboards - still did it
unplugged it from the network - still did it
moved it to a different room on a different power circuit - yepp still did it...

  • PB G4 Narcolepsy,  constant sleep, sleeping, power management overtemp

    Hi there,
I don't see an answer to the problem discussed in the below thread. Is Apple avoiding this problem?
It's discussed in several threads over several years with no answer. Here's the deal:
Powerbook G4 1.5ghz. Constantly goes to sleep (every 5-10 seconds). Tried to remedy by putting in a new hard disk, formatting and installing Leopard. No help. It was doing it before it completely finished the install.
    Booting into single user mode gives an error that appears every 5-10 seconds;
"PowerManagement emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep!"
The PowerBook is cool as the other side of the pillow.
    HEY APPLE!! What's the problem/answer?
    Here's the thread.

    Thanks.

I had this problem for a while and was getting no fixes or truely helpful information anywhere online... I did however come across people who suggested resetting the PMU. I have a solution that worked for me, at least most of the time, so for those of you still struggling with this I hope this helps.
    1. Shutdown your computer when you won't need it for a while, i.e overnight, while your away from your desk, ect... Don't force shutdown (by holding the power button till it's off), but let it complete the shutdown process.
    2. Reset PMU: When computer is off and has had a chance to rest, Hold down "CTRL + ALT/OPTION + POWER BUTTON" until the standby light comes on and you hear a tone from the computer.
    3. As soon as you hear the tone, release the buttons and hold down "ALT/OPTION + APPLE/COMMAND + 'F' + 'O'" until the screen notifies you to release the keys to proceed.
    4. At this point the computer will be waiting for you to input a command. Enter "reset-nvram" and press enter. Next, enter "reset-all" and press enter. A few lines of text will come up then your computer will restart.
    5. Repeat as necessary.
Since I have done this, I have had relatively little trouble with this problem. It will start acting up after about a day or two again, but I just repeat this process and it works like it should.
    Hope that helps!

  • New power supply - constant sleeping

    Hello all
Power supply recently let go so had a new unit fitted and the the machine returned as working.
Unfortunately machine constantly sleeps. I have chucked out PLIST and tried to run from disc warrior (the machine just shuts down befor full load up from DW).
Any clues before I throw it back in through the shop window?
    S.

    Hi Mack
Thanks for stopping my lonely feeling!
Got to the second Panther install disk and the sleeping sickness started again (thankfully a reasonable backup discipline and the ability to run the machine for a few minutes before I wiped the old startup disc prevented any disasters).
So it is back to the Alfreton (Derbyshire, UK) Mac hospital and more expense I suspect for my MDD.
Anyone know how much a logic board is in UK beer vouchers?
    Depressed....

  • Constant sleep mode

i have been using my powerbook for about a year, it is running fine until recently whenever i turn it on, and when it reach to the log in screen the powerbook would just keep goin into sleep mode, and it would happen regardless if im in the middle of using it. it jus keep reinterate back to sleep mode each time i try hard tapping space bar to get it back to unsleep it. i even tried to reinstall the osx system and the same thing happens. cud it possibly b a damage to the internal hardware of the powerbook? i really have no idea and it is ticking me off whenever it happens becuz i have al these files in it and now i cant get access to it now... plz sent me a reply on this and i b would really appreciated. thnx
      Mac OS X (10.4)

Well, this ends with a long story.
I ended up purchasing a logic board from PowerbookTech.com and when it arrived more than three weeks later upon visual inspection it was faulty- fried components, discolored electric-shock tracery, etc. I would not even attempt installing this bad board for fear of getting a "so sorry, it must've occurred due to your careless handling" reply, and wrote to the vendor telling them such that very night. I waited several days and, hearing nothing, wrote again. Five days later I was told I could return it for a refund as they had no others to send. Three more weeks after mailing it via insured US mail I had not heard anything as to its receipt, neither from the postal service nor PowerbookTech. Finally, two months after my payment was first accepted, I got my refund. Communication with this vendor was painfully slow and disappointing. Payment was accepted immediately but product was not shipped until three weeks later. Refund was not given until almost a full month after I mailed back the product.
During all this waiting for a refund (and contemplating contacting my credit card company to request a chargeback), I gave in and bought a replacement 667MHz board through a vendor on eBay for less than I paid PowerbookTech. I received the eBay product in two days and on inspection appeared without flaw. After installation, I crossed my fingers and pushed the power button. Yay!
So, the bad news: I hate to give anybody a bad rap but the communication with PowerbookTech was horrible, they were quick to take money and reluctant to relinquish it (though they did, but not with my shipping costs as promised) and tested my patience. I have a lot of patience. This whole ordeal took two months and a day. I could not recommend them as a vendor to anyone.
The good news: The TiBook works like new now and I have redeemed myself in my wife's eyes, but the time it took to resolve this bad board has still left a bitter taste in my mouth. The actual repair took very little time, just patience and a steady hand. The computer works, I got to take apart and reassemble a fine piece of engineering, and life is back to normal.

  • Emergency overtemp signal? powerbooking putting itself to sleep

Been having really constant sleep/crashing issues which can be as frequent as every few seconds, or spread out over the course of many minutes. I'm getting the below messages in my Console logs which i am assuming to indicate faulty hardware/logic board. but before i give up the ghost on this powerbook thought i would post here to see if there are any other solutions/remedies to this problem. could it also be a RAM issue? or something else that is fixable for a reasonable amount of money? or should i consider this machine toast. is it even worth bringing it in for a diagnostic? or is that $75 to tell me my logic board needs replacing?

    Hey,
so the unsoldering was easier than i expected. Chip came right out, and after brushing off the solder particles and taping over the exposed solder points, the powerbook started up and was running for a few hours with no problems.
Maybe I was pressing my luck, but wanted to see what happened if i powered down and tried a reboot, at which point i am now faced with a non-starting computer. i get the chime, but then it never progresses past the black screen. I can feel and hear the components engaging, and i can force the power down by depressing the power button for a few seconds.
One problem solved another to now solve? Startup chime and black screen seems much less drastic than failing overtemp sensor. Any ideas what that could be? I tried a PMU resent already and getting the same thing.

  • Constant/Random Sleep/Wake issues

I'm on a new 17 inch MacBook Pro and I've been having problems ever since October with waking issues. Most of the features on the MBP work completely fine until I decide to close the lid and let the mac fall asleep.
One of the random issues I receive is the inability to wake from sleep.
I open the lid hoping the mac will start up as it should, but about 70% of the time the screen stays dark while I still hear the fans and machinery within it work.
I usually have to perform a hard restart by holding down the power button to get a fully functional macbook pro again...
The second issue occurs when I am actually ABLE to wake the Macbook Pro from sleep. The mouse turns horribly unsmooth and jumpy and programs seem to work slower than they normally should.
I experience a few other random problems in addition to these wake issues, but these are basically the main ones.
The only solution I have right now is holding down the power button and performing a full restart, risking closing and deleting all previous programs I was working with...
Can somebody show me a solution to this problem?
Would a clean re-install of Leopard help? I've tried it once before but more and more new problems keep showing up...
Anyways, I hope I can get help on this subject
    Thanks

Same issue with my 17". The mouse problem is very annoying. If your screen does not turn on after it has fallen asleep, I push the Screen Brightness up Function key and after about a minute or less the screen makes all the sounds like you pushed the buttons or button all at once and resumes normal functionality. If you have the sluggish mouse, I just insert a wired mouse and it moves fine. As soon as I move my finger over the trackpad the sluggishness continues, but only on the trackpad.
I hope Apple has an Update for this issue soon it happens very frequently. As a matter of fact, right before I typed this message.

  • My iMac wakes up immediately after sleeping

First off, I'm using a mid-2010 imac with an i7 Quad Core processor, 8 GB 1333 MHz RAM, and Mac OSX 10.9.5.
I've had this issue for a while now and I seriously can't pin it down. It doesn't always do this - it seems completely random, where it will be constant for a few weeks, then it'll stop... then it'll start doing it again a couple months later. Basically, I put the iMac to sleep, and as soon as I can hear everything power off, it immediately wakes up. I've tried the following troubleshooting, to no avail:
    *Disconnecting USB peripherals
    *Turning off bluetooth mouse
    *Disabling wake for network access
    *Closing applications
Sometimes if I close my browsers (I primarily use Chrome and Firefox) it seems to allow the computer to sleep. Other times it doesn't. Sometimes I just have to shut down the whole computer to prevent it from keeping me awake at night. It's really frustrating. Anybody have any ideas?

Resetting SMC as well as NVRAM could solve the problem.

  • I cannot wake up IMAC from sleep at times

Recently when my IMAC is either intentionally placed in Sleep Mode of when it goes to that state through inactivity, I find that I am unable to wake the machine up. The sleep mode indicator like goes out, the machine is running, but, nothing can bring the screen up short of pulling out the power cord, reinserting it into a source of power and then pressing the power button in the rear of the unit. The problem is not constant in that it does not occur all the time.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.

  • Kernel Panic on wake from sleep (iPhone only)

After trying to upgrade to Mavericks a few weeks ago I found out that my hard drive had failed.  I took it into the store and they replaced the hard drive.  Now, with the new hard drive also having Mavericks, I have been having kernel panics when I try to wake it up.  I always plug my phone into my computer when I am sleeping to charge it.  When I wake up and attempt to wake my computer up there is always a kernel panic (and I mean, literally, always) and I have to hard reset the computer.  This doesn't happen when I wake it from sleep after work (when my phone has not been plugged into it) so I kind of came to the conclusion that it was an issue with having my phone plugged into it while it is sleeping.  Obviously, the easy answer is to just plug my phone into the wall to charge it, but I would rather address the issue I am having rather than just finding a workaround.  Here is the last log from the kernel panic I had this morning if it helps.

Ok, so I guess it is not a kernel panic.  I was under the impression that's what it was.  Under System Diagnostic Messages I have that same log from almost every day since I got my computer back.
Any ideas what would be causing that?  As far as plugging my phone into a separate charger, I will do that if it is the only option.  I know that this was never an issue before upgrading to Mavericks, so I figure it is something to do with Mavericks, not the computer itself.  Maybe I am wrong though and plugging the phone into a separate charger is the only option.

  • My Mac Mini does not wake up from sleep. What to do?

After my brand new Mac Mini goes to sleep (by timer or manually), my Apple monitor usually (but not always) refuses to wake from sleep. Sometimes I can get the display to return, sometimes not, but in either case there is no subsequent response to my bluetooth mouse or keyboard, and my only choice is to shut down with the power button.
(I know there have been other question on similar issues, but most are old, and recent ones do not seem to have been answered. At this point, on Apple's advice, I am about to return the computer, but was wondering if anyone has solved a similar problem)
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, you would be surprised as to what low voltage (brownouts) can do. The problem is, most people don't realise how dumb the power supplies in our computers are and how variable their electrical supply is.
To illustrate this, we used to have a light plugged into a power board which was powered by a 5 step line conditioner (basically a UPS without a battery) and you be amazed as to how low the voltage gets. When the nominal voltage was between 196 and 240V (the line did nothing at this point) the light was constant enough although once it went below 196V the line conditioner kicked in topping the voltage up to 240V all of a sudden the light output doubled. On a bad evening this would be flicking up and down all night. Can you imagine what this would be doing to a computer?
My recommendation for you and everyone else would be to buy a UPS regardless. For the small amount a UPS costs they're well worth the investment.
My current favourite are the APC Back-UPS RS series for important/sensitive equipment although these do cost a little more and the 1000/1500VA units are quite big (so check the dimensions carefully). I have a 1000VA unit for my desk, another for my plasma TV and home cinema equipment and an 800VA for my ADSL line and server. Additionally I use the APC Back-UPS ES 500VA units (they have a much more convenient standard power plug for appliances rather than a D type plug) for less important/sensitive equipment like the fax machine, laser printer etc.

  • Short flickering when the notebook wakes up from sleep mode MacBook Pro Late 2013

    Hello everyone!
I have a question concerning the display of my new MacBook Pro with retina display (late 2013).
Sometimes when opening the lid when the notebook wakes up from sleep mode, the display is flickering for like two seconds. Then everything is normal again.
This specially occurs when the lid has been closed for a longer time. It makes no difference if the power adapter is plugged in or not.
Have you experienced a similar flickering with your MacBook Pro?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hello!
I have the same problem with my late 2012 MacBook Pro Retina. The constant flickering after being awoken from sleep was a minor annoyance for me so I contacted Apple Support.
I shall explain what I have done thus far, and I recommend you follow the same steps as I did to tick off possible causes:
Firstly, I reset my PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/ph14222) and SMC (ttp://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964).
The issue still remained so I checked if the flickering occurred in a new user (if it does not then it points to your account having a setting which is causing the flickering - possibly third party). For me the flickering continued so I tested it in Safe Boot (which worked fine!).
I then ran (just to be certain) the Apple Hardware Test (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509). All seemed to be OK. So I reinstalled OS X and still the issue remained.
It was then I had an Apple Support person 'screen share' with me and we went through certain folders. My GPU folder had an unusual amount of files so we trashed them and began a restart however this led to a bigger problem; my notebook wouldn't boot (not even in Safe Boot!), so be very weary at this stage, I'm not sure if this was a rare case or we deleted something we shouldn't have. I then had to go into recovery mode to get back to square one.
Back to the initial problem I reinstalled a 'clean' OS X version from recovery mode; this was to determine whether if the data is corrupted on my account or if it's something else; most likely hardware by now even if there was nothing that came up in the hardware test (it won't account for everything). I checked from both a backup of my data and then from a fresh user after reinstalling OS X and still the flickering continued.
It was then a Senior Apple Support person set up an appointment to have my MacBook looked at and possibly repaired (it could be a minor wire causing the problem).
That is the point I am at now, so for my case it seems like a minor hardware problem. If your case is as similar as mine I recommend making an appointment with them to run more sophisticated hardware tests that your own MacBook would not run.
I will comment again when my issue is completely resolved for those who come across this Discussion in the future.
    Hope this helps!

  • Has anyone experienced random wake/sleep cycles? (NOT random shut down)

I bought my macbook on August 1, 2006, and previously had a problem with my it randomly shutting down. I had that fixed in December. Now I'm having the opposite problem, essentially. Whenever I put my computer to sleep, it wakes itself up, waits a few seconds, puts itself back to sleep, waits a few more seconds, wakes itself up... a constant annoying cycle. It doesn't matter if I put it to sleep by closing the lid or by choosing "sleep" from the apple menu, it still does this. I thought that perhaps one of my applications was causing my macbook to wake itself up, but this happens even when no applications are in use and I'm completely disconnected from the internet. This is driving me CRAZY because the noise of it waking itself up keeps me awake, and having to close out of all of my applications and shut down every night or whenever I want to transport it is terribly bothersome. Plus... the fact that it is waking itself from sleep can't be positive! Does anyone have any advice? I'm going to take it into the mac store but I'm super busy and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions until then.
    Thanks!
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I started having an almost identical problem. I would put the computer to sleep the screen would go black and seem to shutdown for a couple of seconds. Then the CD drive would make it's noise and the computer would wake up. I reproduced it with a clean install of OSX. If I had a password set on the computer and did not enter the password the computer would go to back to sleep and then repeat the process again and again.
The first day it happened I could reproduce it every time. Now it's not so constant. I need to get the CPU to around 140 degrees Fahrenheit for a few minutes and then put the computer to sleep by typing command-option-eject.
I suspect that there is a faulty cable or sensor. Conincidentally when the problem ocurred my bluetooth also seemed to "disappear" the computer could not detect the bluetooth module. That leads me to believe that there might be two cables one that is a case-open-close sensor and a bluetooth cable sensor and that they are getting pinched.

  • Apps crashing on wake from sleep

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard on my 2008 unibody Macbook, I've been having wake-from-sleep issues. I'm hoping that someone will be able make sense of the crash logs
Sporadically, when I wake it from sleep, an app will crash, quit unexpectedly. The app will restart fine and run normally after that. It only happens occasionally, twice today, once yesterday, but not for a week before that. The apps involved so far have been Safari 4.03, Mail 4.1, Textedit 1.6, and activity Monitor 10.6, as well as Dashboard client.
The crash log doesn't help me because I don't really know what to look for. I eliminated several of background processes that were mentioned in some of the early crash logs. Permissions repair, disk repair, and Apple Hardware test all negative.
Has anyone else been having problems like this?

I had this problem also, it has been driving me crazy since I upgraded to Snow Leopard in October. I thought that it was maybe the upgrade install type so I wiped the HD and did a clean install but still had the same problem with iTunes, Skype, Google Notifier, Safari and Net News Wire continually crashing after sleep.
Under advice I tried a SMC reset but this did not help either.
Today I called apple care and they suggested a PRAM reset, after a couple of hours testing the problem seems to be fixed.
To do a PRAM reset on a late 2008 MacBook.....
    1. Power off the MacBook (shutdown)
    2. Unplug mains power lead
    3. Count to 10
    4. Plug the mains power lead back in
    5. Press the power button to start the MacBook
    6. Immediately press and hold down the CMD, ALT, P and R keys
    7. You will hear the startup chime then the screen will go off (keep holding the keys)
    8. You will hear the startup chime again then the screen will go off (keep holding)
    9. You will hear the startup chime a third time
    10. Now release the keys and let the MacBook startup
    11. Hopefully no more crashes after sleep

  • Mac Pro goes to sleep and wont wake up

Any idea how to stop the Mac from freezing up when it goes into sleep mode?
First the screen saver comes on and then after a way it goes into hibernation and then can't be woken.
It use to wake but suddenly decided not to. Nothing's changed.

Well, as you can see from the long discussion on Creative Cow, the XD Cam issue is complicated and seems to be a hardware issue with Mac Pros. Disconnecting the fibre channel card seemed to have worked for one person. I haven't got one of those as far as I know! But then my crashes aren't as constant as his and seem connected, in my mind, with the odd way FC garbles the aspect ratios of Ex 1 footage, especially if mixed with filters and other codecs on the same time line... but some people swear it's the hardware not the soft that's the problem.
Anyway, I've had the hardware... RAM, Disk issues etc... all triple checked out and can't find a problem.
But still Finder takes six seconds to find anything and I think that has caused some crashes.
It doesn't seem to like Soundtrack Pro at all! (You can find a mixed bag of experiences on that issue as well.) And Motion works a little bit too jittery for my liking.
It might be that there are several different flavours of mother board, some not as geared up to this software as others. That's my theory at the moment. The only way to check is to stick my hard drives into the machine of someone who says they don't have any problems.
