G5 Dual 1.8: sounds like short-wave radio tuning, weird whistling

We've got a dual 1.8GHz, Panther, that suddenly started sounding weird. The best description I can think of is like trying to tune a short-wave radio, kind of outer-spacey squealing. We disconnected the speakers and the sound went away; if we plug in external speakers after that, we get the sound, so it's being produced by the computer. If you try to play music, you can hear it but it's smothered by the space noises.
Does this make sense to anybody? Any suggestions or similar experiences? I'll go back to the site to boot it to an external to see if it still happens, but I'm pretty sure it's hardware. It's not a show-stopper--this is a prepress machine in a newspaper--but it's pretty annoying and it would be nice to have proper sound back, though I would like to reassure the user that it's only the sound and not a sign of imminent demise.
No APP.
Thanks for any ideas.

Try downloading and installing Apple's CHUD tools from http://connect.apple.com You have to register for a free developer account before you can download anything.
The CHUD tools will install a preference pane for the CPU (this may get installed in /Developer/Extras/PreferencePanes). This preference pane has an option to "Allow Nap". Disabling this feature tends to reduce that noise. It must be re-disabled after each restart however.

  • Short wave radio in background. Long analog mini-jack cable in phones jack?

I couldn't find the techy/nerd discussion forum, so we'll try here. It's perhaps caused by a poorly insulated cable we bought yesterday at a big box computer and a/v store which is five meters long, but I shouldn't guess. The motherboard is huge with analog jacks at either end. I'll try a shorter cable when I'm done with this.
I'm curious how this curious phenomenon could occur, but my knowledge of radio waves doesn't go beyond history of science classes from way back when.
We heard it last night. Sometimes faint, sometimes loud. It's still there this morning, but it's very faint. Clearly a radio broadcast. The language sound like it's from far in the East in the Moslem world, which is why I guess that it's shortwave. Maybe Farsi. It's on JBL speakers. These (mac?) speakers are in three parts. The big strange dome and two tweeters. The radio station comes only through the tweeters. The odd thing is that we exchanged the cable from the big dome to the front of the mac pro. But perhaps, since the big dome is for bass, we can only hear it on the tweeters. We would have used the back jack, but the analog jack in the back doesn't work since two days (we are gentle with everything), and now sometimes we have a contact problem with the phones jack in the front. This is a brand new macpro with only OSX and FCP and updates installed, and disk permissions repaired, on a secure swiss telephone internet line.
No other radios are being used in the house. We are in the country five kilometers from our internet connection. We have two monitors connected. The Mac HD, with the out of box cable, plus a VGA flat screen Acer with about a two meter cable.
That's more than enough for the moment. I'll plug in the shorter cable and see if we still have the radio noise.

Ah ha! Problem solved. I unplugged our old but fancy Pioneer amp and components, and the radio station noise disappeared.
It is about three meters away. It was in standby mode. It has a tuner, but the tuner was not on.
Anyone bored enough to explain this phenomenon? I guess that it wouldn't be a bad idea to understand something about radio interference. The general public might not even notice, but for someone who is concentrating hard, it could be very distracting.

  • I was playing Angry Birds and had to hit the pause button to listen to something.  When I hit the pause/play button again to resume, I heard talking that sounded like a talk-radio program and I couldn't turn it off, even when I turned off my iPad.

Does anyone know what would cause me to start hearing a talk program of some type after hitting the play button after it had been on pause.  Hitting the pause button shuts off the talking, but hitting the play button starts it up again.  The strange thing is that the talking continues even after I turn off my iPad. The talk program was about silly or trendy news items, not regular news.  It sounds like it could be a talk-radio program, but there were no call letters or information on where it was coming from or who was talking.  The person doing all the talking is a male and sounds like he could be in his 20's.  The only way I could turn it off was to hit the pause button and then turn off my iPad. I just got my iPad last week and had not had any problems with it until this happened.  At the time this happened I was playing a version of Angry Birds that kept being interrupted by t-mobile commercials from time to time, which I had never experienced before. either.

Well, shut my mouth!  There was a similar question over to the right about a 6th generation nano repeating over and over again -- I read the answer to that one, followed the instructions, and holy crap, it's back to normal.
Is there a name for this when you end up replying to your own aggravating question?  That's what I did.  Now I can go out and listen.  It's only 91 degrees.  Heaven. Thanks, Apple.

  • Songs sound like they have radio interference rather than music on them.

    1. Songs play with the wrong title, some won't play but don't show the "can't locate icon '!'", others sound like they have picked up radio interference or play what sounds like a TV or Radio soap opera.
I've 'repaired', deleted and reinstalled iTunes, to no avail. Whether playing in order or shuffle, when it hits one of these it eventually skips thru to the next good song or closes iTunes.
I have deleted and reinstalled a good many but with 1000s thought there might be an easier way to resolve.
    2. This is in a seperate topic but included in case there is any connection: Every time I add a new song or reopen iTunes it goes thru 100+ songs "Determining Gapless Playback Information"!
This uses 100% of a 320gb hard drive with hardly anything on it and takes on average 30 seconds per song = approx 50 mins!
    Thx!

  • ITunes through Airport Express sounds like cheap AM radio

I have a wireless network through a router, but I could not get the Airport Express to play iTunes through it so I turned on the Airport in my iMac and successfully connected to it. Now iTUnes through my stereo sounds like a cheap AM radio and the yellow light doe not stop its slow flash like it is not connected. Any ideas?
P.S. Just so you know, I am fairly new to Apple, after over 20 years with PCs, and brand spanking new to the Airport Express/iTunes thing.
Thanks a bunch for any and all ideas,

24" core2duo iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   This is my first Apple computer and I am lovin' it!

A phono input expects a much different signal than a tape input. The signal from the AirPort Express (AX) is much greater amplitude and has a different equalization curve than a phono signal.

  • Itunes seems to be playing the same music twice is a short delaly so that it sounds like an echo

itunes is playing the same song twice with one delayed enough that it sounds like an echo.  I have deinstalled itunes and reinstalled with the same results.

I have solved the problem. i think when I moved the media file back out of public to my account, I put it back into the wrong place and ended up with a media file inside a media file, inside another media file!! So I moved it again and fixed!! Now I just need to work out why i can't share with another account user of same computor.

  • Sounds like a jet airplane!

Okay, I started having issues with my Dual G5, (lastest available updates) about 1 month ago. We have since then replaced it with a new iMac, but I would still really like to keep the box as a back-up or even turn it into a server.
Every once in a while it will just "lock-up", mouse doesn't move, no beachball, no nothing. after about 2-3 minutes the fans kick on extra hard and fast and this thing sounds as if it's getting ready to break the earth's atmosphere, lol
I have no idea where to even look for a problem. I have pulled all the drives and checked them in my Voyager "toaster" drive and they all work fine, and the main drive from the G5 is even bootable and works great, so i'm assumming it's something to do with the G5's hardware.
Is this something that Apple would even fix, (and I don't mean for free), but will they still work on non intel G5's? is it worth taking to apple or does it sound like something I could fix or is there a 3rd party repair place anyone would suggest?
added: Sometimes upon staring up I will see the HD symbol with a line through it, I'll do a hard power down and then restart and it sees the drive just fine. I also tested by removing those drives and putting in cloned drives, it at times gave the same thing, yet the removed drives in another machine work fine, so I'm really thinking this is hardware.

The original Apple Pro mouse cable frays in the chord just as it exits the mouse, over time, and shorts out causing symptoms similar to yours. You can't see the fray by looking at it thru the exterior covering. This can happen to third party mice over time too.
Mine did it. I plugged it into a different port, so the chord exited the mouse in a different direction, and had very few freezes after that. Once I got over my frugality (cheapness!) I bought a new one. Eventually it got to where I couldn't even work for more then a few minutes without a freeze.
So, try a known good mouse to see if that's the problem. Perhaps borrow one from a friend so you don't purchase something you don't need.
Don Archibald, a Level 5 here, said the USB ports on the keyboard (for you desktop users) are underpowered and can cause this problem also if the mouse is plugged in there. This can even fry the keyboard sometimes (happened to him). Try plugging your mouse into a port on your monitor or tower.
    More in this Apple doc.

That's quite normal. It's a fail safe, when your OS isn't working, to keep your Mac cool as it has no idea if you Mac is overheating or not.
and the main drive from the G5 is even bootable and works great
    In another Mac?
, so i'm assumming it's something to do with the G5's hardware.
If you think that try the following....
I would try running the extended version of your Apple Hardware Test.
It's not perfect but may flag something.

Yes, I think Apple repair still works on them, if not a third party shop will. But, let's see if we can get you going.
added: Sometimes upon staring up I will see the HD symbol with a line through it,
That makes me wonder, have you checked your drives health using S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Utility (located in your utilities folder on your drive)?
If your drive doesn't stay running long enough,
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk. Then check its S.M.A.R.T. status there.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
I also tested by removing those drives and putting in cloned drives, it at times gave the same thing,
Are those clones of your G5 from before you had this trouble?
yet the removed drives in another machine work fine, so I'm really thinking this is hardware.
What Mac are you testing them on?
Also, have you ever replaced the PRAM battery on this G5?

  • For voice to sound like from a telephone

    Hi,
I have some voices recorded in .wav and I wanted to include them on my FCE 4 project.
It's supposed to be a telephone conversation, so the voices are in off.
How can I make them sound like they come from an actual telephone?
    Thank you.

Salut Michel. Je suis de l'ile Maurice donc je parle aussi francais comme toi mais j'écris tres mal le francais. So I'll carry on in english. I use a JVC GZHD7 "1980x1080" camera (.TOD file), imovie HD, FCE HD 3.5.1, MacBookPro intel core duo, Tiger and like you I have been a Mac user since 1987. I am doing fine importing TOD file (raw) to imovie HD and exporting using H.264 compression but can't import raw to FCE HD. I am looking for a way to avoid conversion through quicktime as its time consuming and quality very poor. You can check my short test on www.vimeo.com/1058890 where I exported using H.264 compression at Bitrate 5000 kbits/sec and downsized to 1280x720. Voila. Can you help please? Merci d'avance. Vino.

  • Edit to tape audio promlem - sounds like "chorus" effect

I have tried to Edit to Tape an HDV Sequence, down converted to SD, to a Digibeta deck.
When I monitor (headphone out of digibeta deck) while recording it sounds normal. When I rewind and check tape it sounds like the audio is "doubled up", almost like a very short chorus effect is on the audio. as well as this I can hear what sounds like tape crackle now and again.
However - when I do a straight crash record from the timeline - the audio plays back fine, no crackle.
So thinking it was an edit to tape settings problem i clicked on the audio button in the edit to tape window and notice audio was set to ALL ON. I changed this to A1 and A2 on, thinking that my extra audio tracks (which I had disabled, these where the original audio, not the OMF exported stereo mix) were somehow going down the SDI anyway...
No luck - did the edit to tape again and still sounded the same.
My heart rate has returned to normal now as the network kindly will accept the crash record with non standard timecode - but I of course still want to find out the problem so this doesn't happen again next week....
The Sequence was HDV 1080i, via a Decklink HD Extreme Capture Card, set to down convert to anamorphic 16:9. Sony Digibeta DVW-A500P deck.
Anyone know what the problem could be?
    thanks
    Hugh

for the benefit of anyone who searches for forum for a similar problem - it appears to have been a sync issue. changing "out ref" to "input video" appears to have fixed it.

  • Making one drum sound like many

    Hello-
I've got many bongo/hand drum samples, but they're all of single players. If I record the midi of basically how I want it played, whats an easy, realistic way to make the one sample sound like many samples, as if a group of 20 or 30 people were all playing the drums together. Of course there would be variations in the timing of the hits, the velocity of the hit, and the pitch of each drum.
Basically to humanize it, then multiply it. I'm looking for that big bombastic war-time sound of many many large, deep hand drums pounding in cinematic rhythm, all recorded together in the same room.
Short of hand placing EVERY hit sample by hand, are there easy ways or recommendations for handling this feat?
    Thanks!
    Chris

how many is many? You could try humanizing the original
single-player track, then merging it into another track,
then repeating. Assuming that you'd get random results
    when humanizing, this could work.

  • What does it mean when I try to start my old iMac and I get a beep beep beep that sounds like a truck backing up?

I have an iMac that was running Lion, and everything just died. I tried to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system, but now when I boot I get a beep beep beep that sounds like a truck backing up. What is wrong?

    How many beeps?
1 tone, repeating every 5 seconds: This indicates no RAM is installed.
3 successive tones, a 5 second pause (repeating): This indicates RAM does not pass a data integrity check.
1 long tone while holding down the power button: Indicates an EFI ROM update is in progress on a computer manufactured before 2012.
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones: Indicates EFI ROM corruption is detected and the computer is in EFI ROM recovery mode.

  • Imported audio: sounds like cartoon mice 48KHz vs. 44.1 KHz vs. .mp3

Does anyone know if the following can be fixed:
I inserted some new slides and imported new .mp3 audio clips into CP4.  When played slide by slide the audio sounds as I would expect.  When published, however, the audio on the new slides play at about double speed to the others.  The v/o artiste now sounds like a cartoon mouse.
    So what's different?
I used a different recorder.  I recorded at 48KHz and rendered at the same (in Reaper), before converting to .mp3.  Yes, I know I should have used 44.1 but the file was going to be converted outside of Captivate in any case to .mp3 (and I forgot).
In the audio Manager I can see that the 'old' files that play OK were imported as .wav. Captivate can convert these.  The .mp3 files appear as 48KHz sample rate, even though I coverted to .mp3.
I have a feeling I may need to re-record the clips to 44.1.  Or is there are a way of converting 48KHz files to sound OK at 44.1 KHz?  Any ideas?

    Hi,
I am not sure if yo are experiencing this issue in Adobe Captivate 5 version or older.
If you see this issue in Captivate 5, then this issue is handled in an upgrade patch available -
Please read more details and download the patch from here -
    http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2010/08/patch-for-adobe-captivate-5-to-resolve-upgrade-re lated-issues.html
This should solve your issue if you are on Captivate 5.

  • IMAC sounds like a fan

When my imac is powered on it sounds like a fan is running. Any suggestions?

When I first bought my 24" iMac (2.4Ghz, white version, not the latest aluminum version), it did exactly the same thing. The fan would be overpowering and sounded like a hairdryer on full blast. As a new Mac user at the time I was pretty surprised!! I even called Apple Support and they told me some special ways to reset the machine (that I don't remember and actually did not work).
To cut a long story short and to hopefully help you out -- I unplugged the power source/cable from the back of the iMac, left it out for about 10 seconds, and then plugged it back in. Rebooted, and everything worked.
I would recommend anyone to try this before anything else. Good luck!

  • Sounds like a film projector

We recently started hearing a sound like a film projector eminating from one of our dual G5s. I have removed or stopped every fan that I can see (6 total, I believe: 2 in front for the CPU, 1 above it attached to the speaker, 1 behind the DVD drive, and 2 in back). I even disconnected the hard drive and the sound persists. There is not a disc in the DVD drive and the sound continues whether the DVD drive is opened or closed. It sounds as if it's coming from low inside the case, but it's hard to pinpoint.
I have not yet checked to see if there is something loose somewhere simply vibrating, but it doesn't really sound like that. It sounds just like a film projector.
    Any thoughts?
    Dual G5 2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Well - there are a total of nine fans in the DP2 - one more at 90deg. to the others behind the hard drives and two at the front of the power supply, low down behind the silver perforated grille, running at a constant speed. If you shine a torch in the front of the grille you can see them. If the sound is regular and unchanging it may be one of these.
