G5 Dual 1.8 versus G5 Quad 2.5

I have a quite long and complex FCE project I am getting ready to go back to work on. I currently have a G5 Dual 1.8ghz and am considering getting a G5 Quad 2.5ghz instead. Currently there are some parts of my video which have many layers and filters and I can only move through it for editing very slowly, almost frame by frame at some times. My question is whether or not moving up to a G5 Quad 2.5 would possibly make a big difference or would probably only make a small difference. I know this is a very vague question but any suggestions or opinions would be more than welcome.

Processor vs processor, yes there would be more power in the Quad. But how much RAM memory do you have in your 1.8GHz vs the 2.5GHz? You can strangle both machines if there isn't enough RAM. Minimum 2GB, max 4GB if you are using FCE. Then there's the question of what hard drives you have in each machine - what interface, speed (rpm), cache (MB).

    Hi Gary
Yes you're correct: you've to change out board for upgrading to Quad core processor. It's going to cost you much compared to price of the laptop.

  • 2 Dual core intel xeon vs quad core. Whats the difference??

I came across someone who's selling his mac pro 1.1 (aprox 2-3 years old machine) which hosts 2 dual core intel xeon processors 2.66 Ghz (4 total cores) with an L2 cache of 4 MB per processor and 3 gb of RAM. He is asking for 1200.00
    I wonder:
    1. is there a significant difference between the machine described above and the new 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3500 series processor machines Apple offers?
    2. Is 1200 a good deal considering its a 2-3 year old machine? how much would it cost me brand new?
    3. I am planning to purchase the machine to use Logic Pro 8 (considering to upgrade to 9) which I currently run on my mac book intel core duo 1.8 GHZ. Which of the two machines will be optimal for it?
Thanks in advance for your time!

Using the scores on the GeekBench site, I show that a Mac Pro 1,1 2.66GHz gets a score of 4544.
    http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/218641
The Mac Pro 4,1 Quad Core 2.66GHz with all its Nehalem glory gets a score of 9256.

Benchmark tests versus real-world performance, along with your mileage, may vary. But that should give you an idea of what kind of what you're getting.

  • Mac Mini dual core or Mac Mini quad core server for normal use ?

    Hello
I am looking to replace my desktop work computer from my 2011 i7 quad core 2.0 MBP for a Mac Mini because it was actually made for desktop use and my minidisplayport - dvi adaptor just broke ( I think because to many unplugs and plugs from the laptop to the monitor ) .
I work in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Aptana, Netbeans, open 20 + tabs in chrome, firefox so I need a bit of performance
I have no use for Mac OSX Server, I just want to be at least as fast as my MBP. I can see that the 999$ Mac mini has the same processor as my MBP ( 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 ) but no dedicated video card. Also, the 800$ Mac mini has a video card BUT just a dual core - 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 .
What do you think I should get ? I don't play games, I have windows for that anyway. Would the dedicated video card make much of a difference ? ( does photoshop or mac use it much - openCL etc. )
    Thanks!

You might also consider the Apple only available Mini
which has a 2.7 GHz i7 dual core which has dedicated
graphics. Also, all the 2011 i7 processors (Sandy Bridge)
    are hyperthreading.
As for dedicated graphics, they are really only needed
for high end gaming or 3D rendering apps.  It will
make no difference with the software that you mention,
as they are more CPU intensive.

  • Macbook Pro: Dual Core i7 vs. Quad Core i7 for iMovie

    Hi-
Debating whether to purchase the 13" MBP 2.8 GHz dual-core i7, or whether to pony up $700 more for the 15" MBP 2.4 GHz quad-core i7.  Another consideration would be whether to install 4 GB extra of RAM to get 8 GB at the cost of $180.
Critical question here is whether video editing in iMovie would be OK with the dual-core i7 plus the extra RAM, or whether the quad-core is really necessary.  Anyone have some thoughts on this?  Thanks in advance.

Ralph has pointed you in the right direction regarding RAM.  Both MBP'a will do the job, but I suspect the 15" machine will have the edge.  That aside, another consideration is the screen size it self.  Larger is better to put it simply.  I have 17" MBPs for that purpose.  That becomes a very big price jump, but I'm spoiled.
Another factor to consider in working with video, is storage.  Video files can become very large.  Think about external storage and data flow for various types of connections.  Another advantage of the 17" MBP that it can accept and eSata connection (with an appropriate express card) where as the other MBPs cannot.  esata is significantly faster than Firewire, which in turn is faster than USB.  Naturally the enclosure will have to be eSata compatible.  Faster yet will be the Thunderbolt connection, but as of now I am not aware of any compatible enclosures.
    Ciao.

  • I7 2.7 dual VS i7 2.0 quad

which is faster, 2.7 dual i7 or the 2.0 quad i7 for the imac mini, I dont really care for the video card, just need the horse power
    Thank you

There is something of a paradox with these machines.
If running a single application that is not multithreaded
and only having one or two apps active, the dual 2.7 will
actually be faster for that app.
However, if running an application that is multithreded
(Handbrake comes to mind) or having several applications
actively running at once, the quad 2.0 will actually be faster.
It all depends on the applications used and whether they can
    utilize multiple cores.

  • Dual Core Content to a Quad Core

What is the easiest way to take my Dual Core MacPro and transfer all my files to a Quad Core Mac Pro. I have a co-worker who has left and I was going to consolidate my Ram and files to his computer and build a super computer. There are some programs I have that he doesn't and I want to really want to take all my "guts" and put it in his body haha.
    Thanks

You won't have any trouble with the documents - just remove the disk from one computer and put it in the other. Software, however, is a different thing: in most cases you can't just copy it from one computer to the other and you will have to install it. If you have Adobe software you must deauthorize the software first before you can reinstall it.

  • Dual core versus quad core?

Is there a noticeable difference in speed when comparing a dual core versus a quad core iMac where the advertised speeds are essentially the same, say -- 2.7 ghz CPUs, both running the latest Mac OS 10.82, and iLife, iWork, or MS Office suite programs for MAC?

Chances are for the type of work you're doing an i7 iMac would be a complete waste of money. Where  you may benefit is 5 years from now if your work flow changes a lot where you use apps that draw on the power of an i7. However  none of can look into a crystal ball and decide today what we will need years down the road so if you want to bet safe, buy as much as you can afford.

  • IDVD6 FAST on G5 Dual 2.0GHz and VERY Slow on G5 Quad 2.5GHz

I just finished a side-by-side test of iDVD6 on a 2.0 GHz Dual and a 2.5GHz Quad and I came up with some VERY disturbing results: The Dual was almost 2x faster encoding the same project as the Quad!
How is this even close to being possible?!
I have done the same test on 3 projects, and it is 100% consistent.
I have absolutely nothing else running on the Quad, but I can have photoshop 7 up and editing photos, downloading for usenet, QuickBooks 2006, and FCP5 open and it does not seem to affect the encoding speed on the Dual more that a couple minutes!
Both the Quad and Dual are pretty much stock except for additional HDDs and some extra Crucial memory.

Dual G5 2.5 GHz Dual Core, 2.5 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Sorry, I forgot to mention this on my original post, but, while the Dual reported 100% activity on both processors while processing the iDVD project, the Quad was bouncing between 15-25% activity, occasionally dropping to almost 0% activity! Considering that the Quad was only running at most 25%, it finished the project incredibly fast. If the Dual was running at 25%, it would have been close to 8 hours to finish a 2 hour project.
ASIDE: On the Dual, in iDVD 6 I find that encoding of the menus and movie content consistent with Compressor: about 1.5 hours per every hour of video.
On the Quad, Compressor encodes an hour of video in less the 40 minutes, but iDVD is taking about 2 hours per hour of video content.
    A considerable degradation in performance!
Although, I do have the Final Cut Studio, I do like some of the themes in iDVD, especially iDVD6. Unfortunately, because DVDSP4 does not support importing of iDVD6 projects, I have to use iDVD6 to create the dvds (images, never direct to disc). I suppose I could always rip apart a theme and backward engineer it for DVDSP faster that it currently takes the Quad to encode a single iDVD6 DVD.
BTW: I do not have any 3rd party iLife themes or add-ons added to the Quad other than a couple Jam Packs, but on the dual, I have some www.dvdthemepak.com themes installed and it has not affected the Duals performance.
Note: as of yet, I have not done a speed test with the iDVD 5 or previous themes. It may be my next task after I finish up some other projects. Still, using older themes should not affect the encoding of the main video content. But, who knows.. mmm.
    Thanks

  • Comparing 13-inch:2.8 dual to 15-inch:2.5 quad

Is there that big of a difference between the 2.8 dual vs the 2.5 quad?

    that's an easy answer.
go with the 15' for what you'll be using it for.  it has it's own discreet graphics.
the 2.3GHz is better because of the quad core design.  especially true for video editing.
the 13' will also do what you want but slower because of the built in intel video which is driven by the processor and uses part of the system RAM.
if you're not worried about speed and are more concerned about portability, then you can stick with the 13'.
whatever, you decide to buy, you'll be happy with either macbooks.  just make sure you max out the RAM for your purpose.

For clarification when I speak of "workload" I am refering to the amount of task being handled at one time by the cpu.  Increased workload being directly associated with multiple task being handled at one given time.
The clock speed of the duel core cpu might be 2.9 ghz but it has to divide all task between only two cores.  Also the duel core has integrated graphics which means the gpu is the cpu in the case of the intel 4000hd graphics chip.  This is done by multi threading the bandwith of data over 8 threads of data traffic instead of two like in the intel 3000hd integrated graphics chip.  This allows the 4000hd to process faster but it's also sharing the 8 threads with normal cpu functions.
Also the amount of memory the gpu side of the cpu will use is shared with the main system memory.  This taxes the system resources more becuase now you are given less main system memory while a dedicated amount of system memory is now being used for integrated graphics functions during task such as video compression or gaming.
What may have started out as 4gb of main system memory turns into approximately 3.6gb of main system memory as 384mbs is seperately used only for graphics processes.  The amount of shared memory can not be changed so if you needed more your out of luck.  While handling the heavier graphics task however the cpu/gpu will turbo boost to the higher speeds (3.6ghz).
The same could be true with the quad core when memory is conserned but the quad core will switch over to the discrete graphics card (Nvidia) and offload all heavier graphics processes from the intel gpu to the nvidia gpu which also has more dedicated graphics memory which is faster and seperate from main system memory.  So the discrete graphics card will not only handle the heavier graphics related processing, but will also free up your main system memory.  Also the cpu will turbo boost to keep the system running more smoothly.
Heavier graphics task would include task such as video compression, movie editing, and gaming (Battlefield 3 for example.)

  • NEW QUAD G5 WON'T RUN

    Hi all!
I've just received my new Quad G5.
I was transfering my old session from 2x2G5 to new Quad by Firewire targeting.
In the middle of the process, the Quad worked down (black screen with I/O picture). I've pressed 5 seconds the button and now, my Quad won't run.
Nothing to screen, nothing to keyboard and mouse (no red light under).
Fans are working very fast. that's all... Keyboard is not responding. I can't boot on CD because I cannot open the trap...
I've tried to reset mother board (little button behind fans), pulling-up and replacing micro-cell to reset PRAM but nothing, always nothing....
Could anyone help me ? Thanks a lot for your responses.

1: Reboot the computer by holding the power button and then the mouse button down (wired mouse connected to the Quad itself) the drive tray will open.
2: Stick Tiger install cd #1 and close the tray by gently pushing. Hold the power button to reboot the Quad and hold down the option key. A list of bootable selections will appear.
3: Select AHT and run the extended tests, note any hardware problems. If any call Apple. (note: AHT on the disks expire after so many OS updates as Apple changes things in firmware occasionally)
4: If AHT is clear then reboot holding C key. The computer will boot from the cd.
5: Under the installer menu will be Disk Utility, run the repair disk and repair permissions. Note any problems. If the disk has hardware problems call Apple.
6: Quit the installer/reboot the computer, you shouldn't need to hit the power button. See if the computer boots from the internal drive.
7: If not go back to #4 and from Disk utility select Erase w/zero option the internal drive (this will erase all data!) and quit and reinstall Tiger fresh.
8: Don't run Migration assistant, it copies things blindly, won't copy copy protected programs and hacks correctly. Instead use your same login name, password, etc. as the Dual, leaving the hard drive name the only difference between the two, update your OS to the latest version, then install apps from fresh sources.
9: Now Firewire target disk mode the Dual and copy your iTunes folder, Safari bookmarks and Mail boxes to exactly the same location on the Quad (import the mail boxes). Don't open iTunes yet. Take the Dual off and rename the Quad hard drive exactly as the Dual, now start iTunes and your playlist pathnames should be correct. Now you can rename the Quad hard drive.
10: Visit Carbon Copy Cloner 's forums and learn how to clone your new perfect boot config to a external drive as a alternate boot method. It will save your bacon.

  • What do I need to make my Dual 2 GHz Power Mac G5, 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM wireless?

I was looking at getting this
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000899ZB/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1363349066&sr=8-1&pi=S L75
But it's not compatible with the Mac Pro or the Power Mac G5 Dual and Power Mac G5 Quad computers.
I'm having a hard time find what is compatible.

Dual Processor and Dual Core are not the same.
The Late 2005 G5 had single dual core processors in 2.0 and 2.3 GHz, with the Quad having dual dual core processors.
Earlier G5s were all pre-multi core processors, so would be dual processors.
If your machine is a PowerMac 11,2, the special Airport Extreme/Bluetooth module on the runway card (must have) is what your machine uses.

  • 3 x Dual-band antennas vs 6 uni-band antennas

    Hello guys,
Could you give me an explanation, what is the main reason? Why it is better to use 3 x 2.4/5GHz dual-band antennas versus 6 uni-band antennas ( I mean 3x 2.4 GHz and 3 x 5GHz) ?
    Or maybe I'm wrong?

Ohhhh ... You're talking about the G2 WAPs.
Yes.  Dual band antennas is a no-brainer because you don't want to make your WAP look like a porcupine.
Choosing between individual antennas and a multi-band antenna will depend entirely on how you want to use the WAP.  For low-gain antenna, you can use rubber ducks/duckies/ducklings but with slightly higher gain antennas, I'd prefer to use a patch antenna.
The diversity of the 802.11ac patch antennas will depend on the growth (in sales) of the WAPs themselves.  Most of the antennas come from manufacturers like Terrawave so if you need a patch antenna and Cisco doesn't have them, check out Terrawave and you'll probably find some there.
