G5 dual 1,8Ghz WILL NOT BOOT

G5 dual 1.8 Mhz. Current symptoms. All non-apple devices disconnected. New PRAM battery.
Will not boot. . . system chimes but screen remains dark.
DiskWarrior 4.2 wont boot. System kicks the disk out. Incompatible?
DiskWarrior 3.0.1 spins, seems to be booting but screen remains blank.
Two internal HDs work when mounted in an external USB case on a MacBook.
Reseated the memory sticks.
Any ideas? I have a tho't but would like to hear yours first.

Dual 1.25 will not boot to 10.4

G4 dual 1.25 boots fine to 10.3.9, but will not boot to a fully tested drive with system 10.4. This drive boots fine in any other G4 I've tested it in. When attempting to boot to 10.4 I get the kernel panic screen. I've tried different ram configurations and also booting from a 10.4 install disk. Still no luck. I do know that this model is one that was not designed to boot to System 9, but I would think it should boot to 10.4. The apple site shows no new firmware available for this unit?

Could it be the drive itself?
Is the hardware on the G4 that the drive was built on mesh with the hardware of the G4 that's panicking?
I was having problems doing something similar, turned out to be a USB card I had installed in one but not the other.

Dual 1ghz G4 will not boot

When I push the power button the light lights up and the fans come on but then the button goes dark. After a few seconds the fans get louder but still no joy.
I did get the three tones of doom when this problem started and I was trying to start the computer but now nothing.
I cannot boot from the Cd-rom as I cannot get the drive door to open with pushing the "C" button on start.
I get a solid lit red LED inside after I power up. I also got green lit LEDs on my aurora card when I powered up. I have removed all after market PCI cards.
I checked the battery: 3.5 volts I did the PMU reset procedure.

I have had this problem before and it can be annoying when you need to boot from CD but cant get the draw open. I had to open up the powermac and disconnect the ribbon cable from the CD drive, that way it has the power to open the draw. Once you have the disc in you can put the ribbon cable back in and reboot.
Also some cd drives have a small pinhole on the front of them, if you use a pin in this hole it should activate a button that forces the drive open.
Hopefully using your operating system CD you should be able to access disk utility and see if you can find out what is going on.
Sorry I cant help with the further problem but if you can manage to boot from the CD it might help.

PowerMac G4 Dual Optical - will not boot & no display

PowerMac G4 Dual Optical - Model Number 8570 EMC No 1914 : 1.25GHz DP/256M DDR@ 333/80G/Combo/MDM Operating system OS X 1st or 2nd release
This machine was used daily until February 2007. From then till the last week of September 2009 the machine was in storage and was not powered up
When tried for the first time in over 2 years, the machine powered up and the main switch on the front of the computer came on but no audible chime was heard. The machine will not boot & no display (apart from grey screen visible).
The 3.6 v lithium battery was replaced. PRAM & NVRAM has been reset via the keyboard commands : CommandOption+PR keys. After this, the chimes would work on power up but nothing is visible on screen. Also although the keyboard is functional evidenced by the success of the PRAM reset commands, the num & caps lock lights will not work nor will the CD drive "arrow" eject button. I have also removed the battery, reset the PMU on the logic board, and left the machine for over 30 minutes before powering up again:
Please advise if there is anything else I can try before I take it to a dealer for repair ?

Windows 8.1 will not boot after setting up dual-boot with Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon

In which forum should I ask this question?
After installing Linux Mint onto a partition of my hard drive, Windows 8.1 is listed a choice to boot into after restarting my computer, but will not boot up. It suggests a boot repair and to obtain Windows 8.1 from my distributor. I have seen on other forums
that this has not worked, and I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions for how to proceed.

My powermac dual g5 will not boot up and/or wake up from being asleep

My power mac will not boot up. I hit the power button and it mades the first sound but not the boot sound. My keyboard will not light up or turn on. I replaced the pram battery I hought that might help. It didn't. I am not sure hot to open the disc drive w/o the keyboard working. I am not sure what to do next. I did not hear any clicking from the hard drive. I hope my hard hasn't died. I am running os 10.4.9 Thanks!

If you can get an external 3,5" HDD enclosure, I'd take out the disk(s) that are not backed up, and back them up first on another computer. (You actually should have had bootable backups in the first place, but it's never too late to learn, you learn the hard way ;-)
I could be wrong but I still have a strong feeling that it's a PSU problem.
Good news: if your fans still work, the PSU is not blown (yet). I suspect that dust could cause the symptoms you're seeing.
You have access to an air compressor? Preferably one that has a moist filter. (Canned air is way too expensive, but an option if you don't know anybody with a decent air compressor. Pressure of a can is lower too)
I'd first try to blow it out without disassembly. The PSU is on the bottom, so blow through the frontgrid at the bottom.
You won't be able to get all the dust out, but it might work allready.
I recommend you do this outside, and be surprised by the huge dustcloud that comes out, and be glad you didn't do it in your house.
If that didn't work, I would disassemble your G5, take the PSU out, blow it out more thoroughly, by opening the case of the PSU.

Will not boot up on 1st try

I am having a strange problem, My computer will not boot up on the 1st try after it has been shut off for 2 hrs or more. Here are my specs and then I will go into more detail. I like to use pictures because some of the terminology escapes my vocabulary.

Problem:
After being shut off for more than 2 hours my computer will not boot up on the 1st try. It goes to a message that says"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". I shut it down using the power button, wait for the hard drives to stop spinning, and then hit the power again and it starts up just fine. It will restart just fine also as many time as I want to restart it, after it has been running in windows. Once it is running, it runs terrific, no problems at all.
If you go right into the bios after sitting for a while you see this in the boot sequence, notice there is no hard drives(Nvidia Stripe)in the boot sequence.
After shutting it down and starting right back up this is what you see in the boot sequence. This pic is from a different time, thats why the boot sequence is different.
Here is a short youtube video (2:10 sec) made to help show the problem. (I called it a Cold boot Storage problem for another thread) just ignore that.
Things I have done to try to solve the problem:
1. Update the bios
2.I have moved the boot sequence around, Foppy1st, or CD 1st, ect. and even disabled the [USB:HP Photosm] in the boot sequence, Hard Drives are 1st now.
3.Replaced the Mobo Battery thinking that it was not remembering the boot sequence
4.Checked that the Hard Drives are connected to the correct plugs (6-7) on the motherboard, and that the raid connector JP1 was shorted out for Raid 0 and the blue indicator light was flashing.
* Just a note in this area. I did set up the Raid 0 with a tech from MSI because I was having an issue with the initial set up, and I did use the Nvidia raid drivers that came with the motherboard. Pchas01 in another thread thought that this could be part of the issue because it is not necessary to load the drivers when you set up the Motherboard in the Raid mode.
F10 and look in the Raid Array
5. Pulled the jumper off of JP1 and it just went to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" screen much faster, but would never boot up after 5 tries. Put the jumper back in and started up on the 2nd try like the normal problem.
6.Went into the On-Chip ATA devices in the bios and Changed the Raid Mode to an IDE, I cannot F10 and get into the Raid Array now, but I guess that is normal.
Now this is what my boot sequence currently looks like.
That is the point that I am right now. It runs great, games are awesome on it. Its just does not want to start up on the 1st attempt.

I started with the easy fixes first, changed the sata cables, and tried different power supply connectors. Both tests had same results, still boots up on 2nd try. I did not know how soon the problem would re-occur after it has been shut down, my shortest time so far is 25 minutes.

Well right now, it is not even set up that way, in my #6 problem solving, it was suggested that I turn the Raid Mode off and try [IDE] to see if that made a difference,"because I don't need Raid enabled for the hardware raid". It did not, it only booted to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" window about 60 seconds faster. It is currently set up in this way.

Equium will not boot - how to access Recovery partition?

Hi, my sister has a 2008 Equium A200-1V0 with Vista 32-bit which will not boot (probably due to virus rootkit damage). It loads the BIOS but then goes straight to black screen with flashing cursor.
F8 does not work.
F2 goes to Phoenix TrustedCore Setup utility. The Toshiba hard drive and CD-ROM drive are listed in Main and Boot in the correct order.
Using F12 I can get it to boot from a Win7 64-bit repair disc I burned using my laptop.
However, this does not recognise the OS nor any image or restore points (because it is 64-bit) but it will load Command Prompt.
In *Command Prompt*, I can start Notepad and when I click File/ Open and double click on Computer it shows 4 Hard drives as follows:
Local Disk (C:)
Data (D:) 42 GB free of 54.5 GB
WinRE (E:) 1.11 GB free of 1.46 GB
Boot (X:) 29.0 MB free of 31.5 MB (which is used by the Repair disc)
So the C: drive is listed but without capacity.

So my question still remains: can I recover my Toshiba laptop using this recovery partition?
PLEASE NOTE: as mentioned above, pressing F8 during boot has no effect and therefore Safe Mode cannot be accessed.

Yes, as mentioned backup now. best not to use your Mac till you do. The drive may fail for good. Here's some tips on replacing your drive (they are pretty inexpensive now);
This is by SDMacuser,
Even if you have never installed nor pulled a HD from a Powermac...... trust me....it is not all that difficult.
I can actually switch internal HD's among 3 separate G4 Towers I own in a matter of minutes (often less than 10 minutes).
Simply power the system down and ground yourself (a grounding strap is recommended or at the very least touching the metal frame to discharge any potential static electricity prior to actually touching the HD or any internal components on your system).
Disconnect the power cable to the back of the HD, then the long ide connector on the back of the HD / cable (pull straight back while grasping the black connector with 2 fingers ... do not yank the actual ribbon cable).
All of my HD's are mounted or bolted to their own metal sleds (either single sled or a dual sled) with 4 screws.
Unscrew the small screw (philips) holding the sled in place on position one below the ide connector or cable. And gently remove the sled & HD from the Powermac without bumping / damaging other internal components.
Remove the 4 screws from the sled itself holding the HD in place. Be careful not to allow the drive to fall once all screws have been removed.
Install the new HD (and make sure to address proper jumpers on the back of the HD itself.)
Now reverse this process with new HD for proper installation into the G4 Powermac.

Xserve will not boot up, all lights flash rapidly

Just bought a lightly used Intel Xserve. This unit was in a business that failed, and was set up, but never used. Was powered off and unplugged for approximately 18 months. When we tried to plug it up to check it out & configure it, we noticed the following:
System will not post and won't boot
Hard drives do not appear to spin
CD Drive appears to have no power - will not grab disk
All fans do work, and run on high RPM
All lights on back of server and front of server, as well as next to SDRAM slots, and on back of main board flash / flicker (regular quick flashes, no pattern evident). The only light that does NOT come on at all is the light next to the power button.
Anyone heard of a similar condition? Is this server toast?

I'm sorry to say I don't have a solution, but I can commiserate.
I have a G5 and two G4's, and so far within a few days / couple of weeks of getting them home and getting them up and running, they seem to fail.
Usually spectacularily.
The G5 operates very much as yours in that power on, fans rev high, and no post or other activity; I don't get any system light status action however other than flashing. I've replaced CPU's and logic board on this.
The single CPU G4's does much the same, but this I've had up and running and then it went down when I upgraded the memory to max (very careful to make sure it was within Apple spec's), and despite swappinbg the original memory back in,nothing.
My latest, a dual core G4, was bought in working order, and I upgraded this from 10.4 to 10.5. Running nicely as a internet gateway. Went away for weekend so put it into sleep mode. Came back, power button on front panel stopped working, and one of the raid slices on the system drive failed.
Tried to repair this and system now no longer boots, but freezes on loading OS (spinning disc stops in mid spin) and it will not boot from installation disc via firewire or internal DVD drive (swapped in a replacement to ensure it works). The installation disc stops at the apple splash screen, but goes no further.
I can, helpfully, get into Open Firmware mode, so something is working on some level. Sadly, I can't seem to find a copy of the Apple Hardware Test for this machine (see my post on this) to check it out.
I can tell you that I'm getting very adept at working with Xserve hardware, if not very effectively.
My working hypothesis on this is that there is some issue with these units being used 27/7x365 for however long, and then being left 'off' for a prolonged period.
Thinking that whilst they are designed to operate reliably as constantly on and working under load, so facet of being 'off' breaks 'something'.
If really pushed to go out on a limb, I'd theorise that under load the electronics/IC's settle into position, but then when switched off things cool down, contract, and causes weaknesses in electrical connections to occur. When next used, these then start to fail, giving a pattern of initial operability followed by delayed failure with a cascade of increasingly servere symptoms until terminal failure is reached.
But that is wild, uneducated, conjecture.
So, no help, but I comiserate.

My powermac G5 DUAL 2.3GHZ PROCESSOR will not boot up light turns on then fan turns on. I replaced the battery cr2032 and it still does not work. Please help solve my problem. Thank you again in advance. The apple support communities is the best.

Do you get a boot tone (chime) when you power up?
If it does, try a safe boot by powering with the shift key held down.
If it doesn't, you have a fundamental problem to deal with. Are any LEDs on the logic board illuminated after you power up?

G5 will not boot into OSX - stays at a command-line prompt

My G5 will not boot into OS X. I would appreciate and and all advice. Thanks.
What happened:
I had the G5 running one morning, with the Isight camera on, plugged into the front-console firewire port. I was running EvoCam software.
At about 2 hours into running, the cam stopped broadcasting – I got home to check it out three hours later, and the screen was black, and the fan was louder than I had ever, ever heard it on this box.
I did a hard shut-down with the powerbutton on the Cinema Display monitor.
At reboot, I see a grey screen for approx 5 seconds, with a dark grey apple logo, and then the screen goes to black, with a command-line prompt.
It’s been like that ever since.
I ran the Apple Hardware test, from the internal CD drive, and it shows no errors.
I cannot boot from an OSX installer DVD. It won’t recognize it. It goes straight to the black screen and Command line prompt.
I have re-seated the RAM, as well as the Airport Card. The only other card – which I have not re-seated, it the video card.
I am able to use the machine in Target Mode, so I can extract data from the drives, which is great. Oddly enough, I’m able to use the front-console firewire port to connect to my other Mac in Target mode – with no problems. Also – in Target mode, the fan never goes above the usual quiet self.
I would appreciate any advice one can provide. Thanks!

My Step #1 is to always boot into Open Firmware (and do reset-nvram, reset-all, if you can't do that, you are sunk).
Oh, and What do you see in verbose mode on startup?

Ibook g3 will not boot in os 9

I just repartitioned the hard drive of my old tray-loading ibook. I loaded os 10.4 in one partition and want to load os 9 in another. The problem is the machine will not boot from an os 9 cd. I've tried a couple of different os 9 system cds, but none are recognized as bootable (either by restarting holding the c key or option key or in the startup disk system preference).
I know I selected the option of installing os 9 drivers when I reformatted the drive (but that shouldn't matter, as I'm trying to boot from cd).
Before I re-formatted I had a working os 9 partition.

Unlike OS X, OS 9 can be copied by dragging from another computer or from a backup on CD or an external HDD. However, you must have OS 9 drivers installed. All you need to do it to drag the System Folder and the OS 9 Applications folder.
Another option would be to boot from the OS X install disk holding down the "C" key. Go to the installer menu and open Disk Utility. Erase the partition in question. Then try booting from the OS 9 installer. Again, OS 9 drivers must be installed or you have to reformat the whole HDD.
While OS X and OS 9 can live together happily on the same HDD/Partition, having it on a separate partition allows you to startup in OS 9 and retain OS X as your default boot drive by Option Booting.

Mac Pro Processor heating and will not boot

Hi All
I have a 2009 Mac Pro with dual processors, this has been a great system until recently it started to shut itself down after around 20 minutes of use, I tracked this to a processsor getting too hot and shutting down. I air dusted the unit and replaced increased the fan speeds. Now the mac pro will not boot. As soon as I insert the power the motherboard flashes red and will not power up the system. Is there something I can do myself? Can I clear the mac bios? Any thoughts or advice would be appreaciated.

I tried the SMC reset:
SMC Reset using "unplug, hold power for 5, release, plug in
SMC Reset using "unplug, hold power button, plug in, release
No change either way.
What happens is, watching with the case open, when I plug the power cord in and two red lights flash on the motherboard "CPU A" and CPU B". And nothing happens from there, no fans, nothing.
I wil try to remove the heatsink if I can find the right tool.
Do you have any other thoughts?

Power Mac G4 MDD Will not Boot

I have a dual 1.25. I had the screen come up and tell me you have to restart.
restarted computer and now it will not boot. I get a black screen, cannot boot from CD, CD lights up then turns off. All fans turn on, the start up chime, chimes. Mouse does not seem to work, no lights and neither does keyboard. reset pmu by pressing button on mother board. removed PRAM battery and replace after 30 seconds. There is a red led lit on mother board, close to the RAM. I have replaced video card, not fixed. I have reseated every board I can, including ram. I am at a total loss. i hold down option, nothing happens. Help..
I have a WD 1.5 TB with full operating system on it, plugged in via fire wire, and i cannot boot from that. I was downloading from an FTP when the force reboot happened.

Will try that next, have appointment at genius bar, just thought i would bounce it off some people here. I did disconnect all peripherals, and unplugged battery for 5 minutes.
