G5 dual 1,8Ghz WONT BOOT

When trying to boot, system chimes, screen lights, Apple symbol appears, then crash.
System will not boot from CD. In Single Mode, applejack cant fix disk errors. Tried fsck with no luck.
Replaced battery (system is 7 years old). Disconnected all external devices.
Not sure where to look next.
Thanks for your interest.

Hi digi-mech, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Try disconnecting the HD and see if it boots from the Install Disc for a test.
To elaborate, BD (and yours truly as well) is suspecting a serious boot-block or directory problem with the drive, though the fact that you can boot into single-user mode at least indicates that the system is finding and loading the basic Unix system.
If that is the case, you might want to turn to DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com for help. DW is much more aggressive and capable and would be a logical choice under what appears to be going on.
One thing you could do, though, is try a verbose boot with the hard drive by holding down the command-V combination until you see Unix terminal output coming up. If you see some "University of California" lines come up, then the BSD kernel is loading but MacOS is causing a problem, maybe.
Another thing you can try is to boot into open firmware with cmd-opt-O-F keys held down until you get the white terminal screen, then enter the two following commands:
reset-nvram
reset-all
which will cause a normal restart to occur. This clears up any non-default NVRAM entries, which may clear out an offending data value.

  • Apple Mac Pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core

    Hey guys,
Ive got a real brain teaser. I have a apple mac pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core that wont boot.
The leds on the memory test good its all tested in another mac and working well.
The 9 leds are reading as follows 2nd led lit yellow. Led 9,8,7 Green- which from my research is good.
Ive also reset the cmos battery and vram, nothing.
Pulled the memory and video card and re-seated them also nothing.
The last thing i tryed was shut the computer down sit for 30 seconds then held alt and got the install mac os screen not a hard drive option.
Which leads me to think its not seeing the hard drive?
    Any suggestions?

    Starts up with fans
    Makes the apple chime
The chime is generated in software when the first portion of the power-on self test has passed.Your Mac is working and has enough working RAM memory to start up.
You still may have problems with drives, the software on those drives, or your graphics card.
    apple logo comes up
The dark gray Apple is loaded by the ROM boot loader in the first blob of software (before the file system is initialized). Its presence indicates your Mac can get some stuff off a Hard Drive, and seeing it indicates your graphic card can display something in a primitive way.
with spinning gear and just sits there for hours
It is stuck booting up something. Verbose Mode (hold Command-V at startup) will show you the parade of messages. The last five will tell you what happened.

  • Comp wont boot with ram in any slots besides 1&3 no matter what, faulty board?

Ok i've tried pretty much everything, got latest bios, changed timings to everything but the comp just wont boot if I have any ram in slots 2&4. Actually got the comp to boot up with ram in slots 1&2 once, but tried with all 4 slots filled and didn't work, and after that slot 2 didn't work again.
Could it be a faulty board? I know it's not the ram.

Ahh, turns out you were right tiresmoke.
Even though I thought I had 4 sticks that were exactly the same..one wasn't. 3 of them are xms32004.1 0427033 - 0...the one i've always had in my comp is 5.1 0430069 - 1. Put in 2 of the 4.1 and was able to run dual channel np. That explains why one time I was able to run dual channel then switch the ram and couldn't..had no idea there was minor differences..and have no idea why I got 3 of one kind and 1 of another when I orderd the 4 sticks.
Going to try and exchange the 4 sticks for 2 1 gig sticks..how good is neweggs return policy heh? Been like nearly 2 months..

  • G5 Dual 1.8Ghz -randomly very NOISY & FAST fan!

Hi I couldn't find a post for this elsewhere!
1 or 2 times a week my G5 dual 1.8Ghz fan will begin to speed up and become incredibly fast and noisy, when this happens it doesn't slow back down, it keeps going!
Once this begins I am often unable to shutdown or restart the computer and I have to resort to pressing the power button.
On restarting the fan is normal again, but it always happens again at some point.
This happens while the computer is 'awake', but might have happened from sleep once or twice (I can't remember).
    Many thanks for your help,
    Colin
    G5 dual 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   2gb RAM

Hello Colin and welcome to the Apple forums.
This is what we call a "Kernal Panic" and basically the OS stops responding, also to hardware which slows down the fans from the default "turbo" mode your experiencing.
What could be causing this requires a careful process of elimination.
Disconnecting all other external hardware except a wired mouse, keyboard and one monitor is the first step.
Next is to backup all data, c boot from the G5 Tiger (not upgrade over Panther disk!) and Disk Utility Erase w/Zero option your boot drive. Reinstall Tiger fresh and immediatly Software update until clear. Install only vital apps from original sources and cd's (avoid those that alter your sytem/ use a admin password to install), files and data from backup. Update your drives driver software from the makers sites for Tiger.
If these two methods don't resolve the problem, then you should try installing a new boot drive (Zero it first) and repeating the step above to eliminate a bad boot drive.
Once these three steps are done and you still have problems, it could be a RAM or defective video card or other major hardware problem.

  • SATA Card for G5 Dual 1.8Ghz

I'm looking for an internal SATA card for my PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz. I've got a couple hard drives laying around that I wanted to RAID together with my Time Machine Backup drive. Instead of spending hours looking on Google, I figured I'd poll the masses.
Newegg.com has a ton but I want to make sure I get one that is compatible with my hardware.
    Thanks in advance!

The only sure thing is the Firmtek Seritek cards.
They are also the only ones that support boot to the connected drives.
Native OS X support is also an important point.
Firmtek also provides excellent tech support
After that, Highpoint has compatibles, and non compatibles.
They don't support boot, and, but can perform well enough.
If you take the path less taken, and get a card that uses generic Silicon Images drivers, then OS X support, and successful use, is highly variable (to say the least).

  • USB startup on Dual 1.8ghz G5 PPC anyone?

Is there a way to get a USB startup on the dual 1.8ghz G5?
My macbook enables USB boot obviously but my ppc does not support it... is there a way around this?

My understanding is that PPC Macs generally cannot boot from USB drives. There's a hint at MacOSXHints.com that describes one way to attempt it, but it may only work for the very latest PPC machines (of which your dual 1.8 would not be amongst).

  • Powermac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz RAM question

I purchased one stick of 1Gb RAM and installed it on the motherboard, but I didnt know it had to be installed in pairs so the computer wont recognize it. I made an order for a second stick and it should arrive in a couple of days. Can I use my computer with the one stick still in there, or do I need to remove it and install both at the same time?

I would take the new stick out and use it as originally configured. When you get the second stick have at it.

  • G5 dual 1.8ghz

    Hello,
need to know if i install a processor from a G5 dual 2.0ghz or above into my dual 1.8ghz if it will work correctly. Not to compter savvy trying to get more processing power for my Pro Tools Le rig.
Also, any one who knows Pro Tools is there a huge difference in the G5 dual 2.0 and above for running more plug ins, virtual instruments etc vs the dual 1.8ghz?

No it wont work at all . You have two different motherboards one for the 2.0 and one for 1.8 . I own a 1.8 dual like you . you need to replace the motherboard to get that to work . It just wont work out . You can count on apple making sure of that .

  • MSI p67a-gd53 (b3) Wont boot with ram in slot 1 and 3, or 2 and 4.

Hi i recently built my own system, with just one ram stick in it boots fine and everything.
When i try to put the other stick in slot for so that in runs dual channel it just wont boot, it turns on starts the fans up and then just goes off, and repeats this.
The ram i have is Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit.
It also doesnt work in slots 2 and 4, can anyone help me :(?
    My setup is :
OCZ ZS Series 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail
    MSI P67A-GD53 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
MSI ATI Radeon HD 6870 OC HAWK 1024MB
    Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 4GB
    Seagate Barracuda 500gb HD
Gets no beeps on boot with just one stick in, im really confused :s
    All Help will be appreciated.

Both ram sticks worked in slot one and it would boot but I tried running a game and it froze each occasion, cud this be due to the ram being dual channel and only having one in? Or that the ram has the wrong settings.
I have returned the motherboard along with the ram to the shop i got it from for tests to see if the dimm slots had problems. Il let you guys know what they say.
Thanks for the advice, when I get it back il build it again and see if it runs fine, if not il try the things youve said.
Can anyone else shed any light on this? Any other things I may have to try?
    Thx again

  • 10.8.3 wont boot

Using 15in MacBook Pro, mid 2010, 2.8GHz i7, HiRes AG screen, Apple installed APPLE SSD TS512C.
After updating from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3, My computer wont boot past the blank screen, 3 out of 4 times.
The DVD drive powers on and the chime sound sounds off, but I get no apple icon etc etc.
I've checked the System log in Console, and there is no record of the Boot failures.
Switching back to 10.8.2 works fine, but reinstalling 10.8.3 presents the same problem again.
I've taken all the usual safe mode, disc verify/repair steps to nut out the problem, with no success.
Is this a known issue that has a solution?
I dont want to switch back and use 10.8.2, since multiple swapping back and forth in the past has stuffed my computer beyond the help of a Time Machine restore.
    Thanks,
    J

Try updating using the combo updater:

  • OSX wont boot - grey screen

Hi, I turned on my imac g4 15" 700mhz today to find that it wont boot osx at all!
When i start up the computer, i hear the chime, the light comes on and i hear the fan, hd etc. Then, the grey screen appears with a central finder logo (Which is normal, i think). This is when the computer freezes....HELP....WHAT CAN I DO?
I have tried several things suggested on the support pages such as booting from the cd which wouldn't allow me to do anthing - even re-install osx!

Not to get off the subject of the original post too much, but:
    James,
I've encounted the same problem today on my work computer (a G5 Dual 2.5ghz). You'll likely have to do the same thing i did to recover your data:
Remove the drive, mount in another computer (you mentioned that you tried to firewire it to another G4). Instead, actually remove the drive from your machine and install in the other G4. Boot the other G4. Hopefully the drive will mount as a secondary drive. If so, back up your data. If not, run Disk Utility "Repair Disk" on it. You may have to run a third party app like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior. Doing that should fix the drive enough for you to get the data off.
Even if it does, you should probably flatten the drive and do a clean install of the OS. Make sure you run Disk Utility again off the installer disk to insure the drive is competely repaired.
Worst case, you buy a new drive is you are worried about it crashing again. Either way, you should be able to get to your data with a little work.

  • [SOLVED] arch wont boot after triple boot experiment

    Hi,
I cannot boot into arch anymore after installing ubuntu to another partition on my hard drive.
I used grub to dual boot arch and windows, but i need to use ROS and there are no working packages for arch so i tried to install ubuntu on another partition and triple boot.
Somhow my arch got broken by the ubuntu setup.
    Windows still boots fine.
I already chrooted (to arch) from a live cd and reinstalled grub and did
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
, after that ubuntu appeared in the grub selection menu but arch still wont boot.
Arch boot hangs after checking /dev/sda6 for errors (arch partition), i cannot type or ctrl+shift+fx to another terminal
Anybody has an idea what got broken by ubuntu and how i can repair arch?
    thanks!

Hey so i chroot again following this artikle: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_Root
    then i did
    pacman -Syyu mkinitcpio linux udev
    and restarted
I tried starting arch again and it seemed to still not work, this time i gave it some more time and it actually booted.
It took very long though (more then 3 minutes or so)
in journalctl if found those lines:
Sep 09 04:20:00 meanarchy kernel: USB Video Class driver (1.1.1)
    Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Job dev-disk-by\x2duuid-12027d8a\x2dd4b0\x2d4559\x2daa1c\x2de3ea5ca8f5bb.device/start timed out.

    Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Starting Swap.
so it seems boot is searching for some disk device 1:25 minutes before it fails.
I think i know the reason: I resized the Partition of arch while installing ubuntu this changes the uuid of the partition, now something is waiting for this disk to become ready because it still has the old uuid written somwhere.
UUIDs really suck, they are not human readable and always have problems with them if i touch my partitions.

  • Neo4 Wont boot.. no screen..HELP

Sighh.. I just recieved my new ram today and i still have the same problems =/ the bracket stalls on 3  red lights and 1 green light.. = memory problem.  I have tried just 1 stick of ram.. dual.. every combination you can do..cleared cmos.. still wont boot up.. The motherboard is on my table out of the case with just RAM and CPU.. and D-Bracket LED shows LEDs 1 and 4 orange for a second, , then it goes to the memory error sequence (3 red LEDs, 1 green LED). All of the connected fans are spinning, including the CPU heatsink fan.. I think its the motherboard fault.. because ive tried 3 different ram sticks with this motherboard.. still the same problem.
Ive also took out the RAM and VID CARD and resetted my cmos.. and when i power it up, the dbracket said im missing memory.. so i reseted my cmos and added the ram in.. and it still saids im missing memory =/ but ive tried 3 different ram sticks.. and its still the same.
    please help

I think you may have a bad board.  You got this from Newegg right?  Make an inquiry for an rma.  The board shouldn't need any mysterious methods in getting it to POST.     You've went the distance in trying to get this up and running.  As long as you haven't tried to get your system up and running without having a hs/fan on the processor, I strongly lean toward you having gotten a bad board.  It happens.
