G5 dual 2.0 dead? Power light flashed three times...

G5 dual 2.0 powers up, but won't boot. I'm aware the power light blinking three times every few seconds indicates faulty RAM, but I removed all sticks and tried them out a pair at a time to weed something out. No luck. I also put in a new battery and reset the PMU (or SMU, whatever it's called - the button on the logic board.).
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I've just had my computer have the same problem with a faulty logic board being the problem. The local Apple tech said we had to get a service number from Apple to get it fixed. The Apple person (in the Philippines) gave us a number and said go back to our local Apple tech to have him access a repair extension program for the repairs. Are we being given the run-around because the local guy says he doesn't know about this program????

  • Laptop won't turn on - the power adapter light flashes three times? G62 b29SA

I've been replacing the fan in my friend's laptop. I had a problem with the trackpad not working after I put it back together and that problem is not yet resolved but I have another problem preventing me from getting further. Now when I press the on button, the power adapter light (next to the socket for the external power) flashes three times and that's all. It flashes again three times every time I press the power button. It does this even with an external power source plugged in (I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to just stay on constantly when the charger is plugged in but the power source I have is a universal one set to 19 V - it has powered up with this plugged in before but I don't know whether it was taking charge from it). Any advice?

I got the charger from my friend and now it boots up just fine. There seem to be many meanings to the three flashes based on my Internet searches but in this case it appears that it's some way of indicating a low battery.

  • Power button flashes three times in regular intervals!

Everything works fine but the power button on my cinema display flashes three times in regular intervals over and over again. I'm going to have a seizure!

Sorry Malcome. Everytine I try to give you a "solved" I get
"An error in the system has occurred. Please contact the system administrator if the problem persists."
    I'll keep trying.

  • NX6325 won't power up - battery light flashes 8 times

I have a 3 year old NX6325 that won't power up any more.
It makes no difference whether the charger is plugged in or not.
When I turn it on the battery light flashes 8 times (amber) and that's it. Nothing else happens.
Does anybody know what this means?
    Regards,
    Julian.

It is very likely your Northbridge chipset is gone.
The CPU could not make connection to the Northbridge to initiate the any data transfer from the Southbridge ( connected to all your low level devices such as Hard Drive, USB ports, Optical Driver and etc ) to fetch the BIOS content to start the POST ( Power On Self Test ) sequence.
It could also mean your CPU could be bad.

  • Sleep light flashes 5 times - no beeps. What does it mean?

I have a white 2008 Macbook 2.4 Ghz. I recently installed 10.6 from scratch via Retail DVD and the Macbook worked fine. I updated via Software Update and installed all the updates that appeared. There was also a Firmware update to install, which I did after the update to 10.6.8.
But since then, the Macbook has serious video problems.
It boots okay, but the sequence is now:
    - front sleep light flashes 5 times; there are no error beeps
    - I hear the startup chime
    - the Apple logo and spinning wheel appear, and bootup continues
    - at the point where the screen goes blue, and would normally boot to the desktop, the screen now goes black and the Macbook appears to go to sleep
If I wait for a couple of minutes, when I press a key to wake the Macbook from sleep: the DVD spins up, the sleep light flashes 5 times, and I now see the desktop. But then the screen goes black after about 10 seconds.
Before the screen goes black, I can see that the boot seems to have completed okay. I have a Wifi connection and the date and time are correct.
If I go really fast, I can move the arrow to the Apple icon in the top bar and choose Shut down or Restart.
I can boot from the internal HD, an external FW HD and an Install DVD.
I can hold down the Option key and I get all the bootable volumes to boot from. I can choose any of them, then start the boot process, but at the same point - the blue screen - the screen goes black and the Macbook goes to sleep.
The Macbook works perfectly fine when connected to an external monitor. In the Display preferences, only the external monitor is available. The Macbook monitor is not listed. As well, iSight and Photo Booth report that no camera is connected.
I've found some info on the Apple site re. the 5 sleep light flashes, but it only refers to the Macbook Air, and indicates a problem with the battery.
Has anyone seen this problem with the Macbook?

From EZ Jim's link, there was another link to this info at the Apple site, re. Power on Self-Tests:
The power on self-test resides in the ROM of the computer. This test runs whenever the computer is turned on after being fully shut down (the power-on self-test does not run if the computer is only restarted).
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
As I wrote, I don't get the Error Beeps. I've had these on other Macs, so I know what they are. Here, I only get the LED flashes.
What is interesting above is that they say that the Power LED will flash a corresponding number of times (as the beeps) PLUS ONE. In my case, then, if I got 5 flashes, then might it mean NO GOOD BOOT IMAGES IN THE BOOT ROM?
Anyway, it doesn't seem to have the flashing LED problem any more. No idea where to go from here.

  • Dv4-1365dx Caps and scroll lights flash 4 times.

When I turn on my computer, the hard drive starts but then stops. The lights on the touchbar (next to the power button) come on, but the screen does not. Then, the caps lock and scroll lights flash 4 times in sequence. My warranty expired last year, what do I need to do to fix my problem?

If the hard reset suggested by Erico does not resolve the problem,
I think it is a hardware issue with graphics if the leds are blinking 4 times. Refer the following weblink:

  • G5 - light flashes 3 times with - but only 1 time without RAM

    Hi,
recently I bought a broken Power Mac G5 (M9032LL/A) which won't start anymore,
so now I'm trying to fix it:
When I turn it on the white LED will flash 1 time every 4 seconds while there is no RAM installed.
After installing 2x or 4x KHX3200A/1G (Kingston Hyper X, DDR, 1 GB) the light flashes 3 times. (unfortunately I havn't got any original RAM strips...)
    Today I found this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2541581&tstart=0
    which says:
    • 2 Flashes: No RAM is installed or detected.
    • 3 Flashes: Incompatible RAM types are installed.
    • 4 Flashes: No RAM banks passed memory testing.
    • 5 Flashes: No good boot images are detected in the boot ROM (and/or there is a bad
    sys config block).
    • 6 Flashes: The processor is not usable.
I didn't try the hair dryer trick yet
-> but why is the light flashing once only without any RAM?
    Any suggestions?

"Instead, there is a single tone, and the

-> there is no beep or tone at all...
-> The front LED flashes once every 4 seconds.
    What I forgot to mention:
One of the end snap-in bracket holders of the upper/inner RAM-slot is broken...
(was already when I bought it)
However - the stick still fits in perfectly.

  • 2950 appears dead System Light Flashing stat light stays on

I think I have a dead switch. However, I figured I would see if anyones had a similar situation. When I power the device up the stat light comes on and stays on. Then the port lights flash once then the system light starts flashing. Once the system light starts fashing the switch appears to hang. It's not responding from the console port. The other switch is I have is a 2950 as well and it's responds via the terminal emulation settings I've set up. I think I know the answer, but I'm indulging in a little wishful thinking. Lastly I hold down the mode button for 15 to 30 sec and I dont get any change in status. Should I feed this switch to my garbage can?

If the console port does not respond, there is not a whole lot you could do. If you have a service contract, open a TAC service request and get it replaced.

  • 2005 PowerMac not starting up and power light flashing

I have a 2005 Intel Power Macwhich I inherited from work when we got news ones. It has been switched off for a couple of months, and last nigth I went to turn it on and it sounds like it is starting up, but nothing displays on the monitor, and after a while the power light starts flashing continuously.
The mac worked perfectly before I brought it home, and it's not been bashed or dropped. I tried to ask at the Genius Bar but they were no help because this is classed as a vintage computer. The guy mentioned it could be RAM, but I'm not sure I want to buy it just on the off chance.
When I did a bit of Googling last night I found people talking about it flashing 3 times, but it's more of a consistant flash, and pretty quick.
Does anyone have any advice they can give me, as I really need to get it working ASAP for a job.
Just wanted to add that it's an old montior I have hooked it up to, whicj also worked beforehand, but this says that it can't detect a signal and something about video output. Just in case it a monitor problem, althoguh the flashing light makes me think it's the mac!
    Thanks in advance.

I had exactly the same problem with a 8 year old Powermac G5 1.8ghz dual processor. Like you I researched the web and found the hairdryer fix however before taking such drastic measures (given this melts the solder on the ram chips to create a connection), I ordered replacement ram and was advised to replace the ram chips in pairs to see if I could detect a faulty pair. In addition there is a reset switch on the mail board I was told to press prior to boot up.
Despite my efforts I couldn't revive my Mac. This was last Feb. it's still sat in a corner, never been used since. I've just (today) taken delivery of a new iMac, please an you elaborate where exactly did you direct the hairdryer and or how long.
Would love to get one last boot out of the g5 to do a time machine backup to an external drive to then restore to my iMac. Please let me know how you're getting along as I fear the life expectancy of your machine is limited. Backup, backup, backup. Good luck.

  • Mac Pro will not boot, power light flashes once and then Mac switches off

One of our Mac Pro's will not boot. When pressing the power button the light will come on briefly and the Mac will just turn off again.
I have unplugged the power cable and held down the power button for 10 seconds but this did not help.
Any suggestions for me before I call up Apple?

Most indications from flashing power lights are telling you that there is not enough working memory to start up.

  • Has anyone had a problem with a deskjet 3910 printer with the power light flashing?

The power light keep flashing and the printer won't print but it isn't giving an error message. I ran a diagnostic on it and the message it gave under device status was:
HP Print Diagnostic Utility has detected there is a pen failure that needs to be addressed before printing will be successful.
I can't find anywhere that tells what this problem is or how to correct it. Has anyone else come across this problem?

would putting up a metal shield by the meter help?
It might, as long as the shield is grounded. Metallic (such as copper) window screen is often sufficient.
As mentioned, it would not hurt to file a complaint. The burden of proper shielding should probably belong to Pepco. Among other things, the FCC frowns upon RF leakage and its interfereing with radio communications. Besides, Pepco probably would not want you to affix a shield around their gear - liability issues, etc.
You could experiment by temporarily hanging a shield-screen on the inside of the wall, behind where the meter transmitter device is located, and see if there is any beneficial change.

  • Power light flashing on after mac mini crashed

using my mac mini (late 2006) - it just crashed and switched itself off, now when I try and switch it back on it does nothing - no sound, just the power light at the front blinking on and off - any ideas what I can try and do?

Do the Flashes match any tone sequence?
    The old ones sre...
an you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • Power Light flashes when switching on my Mac mini

I recently experienced a strange behavior of my Intel Mac mini (Core solo CPU): After switching on the Mac I do not hear the music clip but instead the power light at the front flashes. It is a different kind of flashing than when the Mac mini is in sleep mode. It flashes with a frequency of about one period per second.
After switching off the Mac mini pressing the power switch at the rear side for about 5 seconds and then switching on the Mac mini again the computer performed a completely normal boot process.
I assume that the flashing of the power light does have some specific meaning. But I could not find any information about this behavior in the manual.
    Any ideas are welcome!
    Regards
    Adalbert.
Intel Core solo Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I assume that there is a communication problem with
any of the attached hardware (keyboard, maus,
display). Are there specific light signals (flash
sequences) for any of the peripherals not being
    detected?
No. Logically, if the system doesn't detect a device, it would not know to give a warning that the device wasn't detected. The only indicators the system will give during startup, are the ones listed in the article to which Doug gave the link, and if your mini gives any startup warning which meets the description given in that article, then you have that specific problem with your system. The fact that the system also startup correctly at other times simply means the problem is an intermittent one. Clearly, intermittent or not, it still requires to be fixed.
Since the mini is new (albeit from the refurb store), if you are not sure what the flashing light actually means, call Apple. The system is under warranty and if faulty, they will fix it. If you have an Apple store in reasonable reach, take the system in and talk the issue over with one of their service people.

  • HP 6940: carriage stuck at left side, resume and power lights flashing

I've used this printer under ubuntu/linux for about 2-1/2 years. Color printing has always been a challenge, I get about one usable page per 5 test pages. About a year ago, it stopped printing; hp-info (part of the hplip package) said the color cartridge was defective. I was able to get black&white printing by removing the color cartridge.
This week, I had to print some stuff in color. I pulled the color cartridge out of its ziplock, re-installed it, and ran a quick cleaning. A test print showed that wasn't enough, and I ran a full cleaning, after which I was able to print a good test page, and then one page of my job.
When I tried to print the second page, nothing happened, and the resume and power lights started flashing. I cycled power on the printer (I have to do this very frequently, even for black and white jobs), but it didn't fix the problem. I pushed resume, but no dice. I pulled the back cover to check for paper jams: nothing jammed. Replaced the back cover, pulled the paper from the tray: nothing jammed. Replaced the paper in the tray. Pushed resume again: it made noise, but didn't clear the problem.
I opened the lid, and the carriage was all the way to the left-hand side. Pushed resume: a small plate in the loading dock at the right-hand side moved forward and then back, but the carriage stayed at the left-hand side. Tried (gently) to move it to the right, but it's firmly in position.
    hp-info now says:
"status-desc                   Paper or cartridge carriage jammed"
The color cartridge is an HP cartridge, and came with the printer. The paper is HP paper.
