G5 dual 2.0ghz 2.5 RAM  160HD on ebay

Hi everyone,
Anyone have an idea what a late 2004 G5 in "as is" condition would go for on ebay. The logic board and power supply are gone. RAM will be removed along with the hard drive. Casing in mint condition.
Thanks

I would not shop for a Mac on eBay without taking serious security precautions. This website discusses the weaknesses of shopping on eBay:

If you want to know what a used G5 goes for, shop around the used and refurbished websites that I list on my FAQ:

Apple's Special Deals, Macconnection, Macwarehouse, Macresq, SmallDog and PowerMax have a very good reputation. The others I'm not as familiar with.

  • Is there much difference btwn dual 1.8ghz and dual 2.0ghz

    Hi,
I have seen a dual 1.8ghz (M9454LL/A) second hand with this spec:
    Machine Type: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac 7,3
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2)
    Number of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed 1.8GHz
    L2 cache (per CPU): 512KB
    Memory: 1.25 GB
    Bus speed: 900MHz
    Graphics Card: GeForce FX 5200
ATA Bus (DVD): Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D
    Serial-ATA (hard-drive): Maxtor 80GB
for a good price around £800 which would leave me with money to buy a monitor.
This model already has airport built in and additional ram added.
I am a music producer (running digidesign protools LE) and need a studio computer to see me through the next couple of years. I have been looking at getting a dual 2.0ghz machine but these are invariably more expensive and I would have to pay to add the features this model already has, as well as purchasing a flatscreen.
Basically I want to know how much of a performance difference i will see between a dual 1.8ghz machine and a dual 2.0ghz machine.
    cheers guys

Ok that dual 1.8 is not much difference from a dual 2
Your dual 1.8 has a 900 Mhz front-side bus per processor
The dual 2 has 400 more Mhz total in CPU speed (not much really) and a 1000 Mhz frontside bus per processor.
    So the difference is minimal.
You could upgrade that video card to a AGP ATI X800 and 3D game all the latest ones with no problem. (I would before they are all gone)
If you get yourself another internal hard drive, something large like a 250-300GB SATA and keep your user files in there instead of on the 80GB Maxtor, your performance "feel" would be pretty good as well. (no Western Digital, they upgraded their SATA specs)
And you got a Superdrive, so you can burn dvds.
If time doesn't equal money, and your not constantly pushing your CPU's day and night, this machine is a good buy IMO. You should get a good 3-4 years out of it, especially if you know when to stop upgrading the OS/apps.
Yes I say you got yourself a good buy there.

  • Sick dual 1.0Ghz MDD

I inherited a snazzy dual 1.0ghz G4 MDD and am having trouble diagnosing it's ailment. It chimes when powered on, I can hear the HD spin up, but after about 8-10 seconds the fans spin up to full speed, nothing comes on the screen at all and the fans just continue to spin at full RPM.
One of the processors has a small amount of brown goo caked on near the die (not on the surface, just next to it - similar to the goo that oozes from a capacitor that's blown) and I was able to remove all of the crusty thermal paste and reapply new paste but the same thing happens when I try to start it up. I know little of the machine's history except that the person who owned it was attempting to install the OS at the time it crapped out.
If anyone has had a similar experience or knows what might be wrong please lend a hand. I'd like to be sure of the problem before I rush out and but a replacement MB or CPU.
    Thanks!
    Dual 1.0Ghz MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Ewww...sounds bad. I've had that happen once. You see, the fans are controlled by the CPU's temperature, and the faster they move, that means the hotter the chip is. Also, that dried out thermal paste was either caused by, or the cause of your problem, as it is either a sign of excessive heat or non adequate heat protection. Sorry to say this, but I think the CPU is fried. That explains the rapid acceleration of the fans. I COULD be wrong, but that is normally what the syptoms describe. I'd have it checked out by a mac genius, as he can give you a more definate answer. If that's the case, you're gonna need a new CPU, or maybe a new logic board.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 PCI (4 RAM Slots) - want to upgrade to 8GB?

My computer is a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 PCI (4 RAM Slots)
Is there any way I can break out of the 4GB RAM limit into the world of 8GB RAM without having to buy a newer computer. I need to open a large 4.5GB TGA file in After Effects (48000 pixels x 36000 pixels).
Failing that, is there an application like RAM doubler I could use temporarily to get me though this job?
Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 PCI (4 RAM Slots)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Currently have 4GB RAM installed

If there is not enough RAM, OSX will use space on the disk drive, so the amount of RAM should not limit the file size an application can handle, but speed will be reduced. 32-bit addressing can restrict the use of huge files, but there are ways that applications can get around it (at the expense of lower speed).
If After Effects has a file size limit, extra RAM will not help A later version (maybe using 64-bit mode) may handle larger files. 64-bit applications can be written to run in Tiger on G5s, but will be easier to write when Leopard is released.
You may be able to use some other application, such as Photo Shop, or Graphics Converter, to extract part of the TGA file, or reduce its size by changing its resolution, so you can use the result in After Effects.

Now my older version of Firefox is gone...Why won't it work, the download page says it is for OSX and does not say it will not work on any particular OSX. Can your clarify. And can I get the old Firefox 3 back or should I continue using Safari....?

Yes I've read every one of them, none of them provide solutions whatsoever, I have spent about ten hours on this site in the past two days to no avail, none of the "resolved" threads provided any sort of solution for me, I have tried everything suggested on this website so far, multiple times, to no avail.

  • IDVD6 FAST on G5 Dual 2.0GHz and VERY Slow on G5 Quad 2.5GHz

I just finished a side-by-side test of iDVD6 on a 2.0 GHz Dual and a 2.5GHz Quad and I came up with some VERY disturbing results: The Dual was almost 2x faster encoding the same project as the Quad!
How is this even close to being possible?!
I have done the same test on 3 projects, and it is 100% consistent.
I have absolutely nothing else running on the Quad, but I can have photoshop 7 up and editing photos, downloading for usenet, QuickBooks 2006, and FCP5 open and it does not seem to affect the encoding speed on the Dual more that a couple minutes!
Both the Quad and Dual are pretty much stock except for additional HDDs and some extra Crucial memory.

Dual G5 2.5 GHz Dual Core, 2.5 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Sorry, I forgot to mention this on my original post, but, while the Dual reported 100% activity on both processors while processing the iDVD project, the Quad was bouncing between 15-25% activity, occasionally dropping to almost 0% activity! Considering that the Quad was only running at most 25%, it finished the project incredibly fast. If the Dual was running at 25%, it would have been close to 8 hours to finish a 2 hour project.
ASIDE: On the Dual, in iDVD 6 I find that encoding of the menus and movie content consistent with Compressor: about 1.5 hours per every hour of video.
On the Quad, Compressor encodes an hour of video in less the 40 minutes, but iDVD is taking about 2 hours per hour of video content.
    A considerable degradation in performance!
Although, I do have the Final Cut Studio, I do like some of the themes in iDVD, especially iDVD6. Unfortunately, because DVDSP4 does not support importing of iDVD6 projects, I have to use iDVD6 to create the dvds (images, never direct to disc). I suppose I could always rip apart a theme and backward engineer it for DVDSP faster that it currently takes the Quad to encode a single iDVD6 DVD.
BTW: I do not have any 3rd party iLife themes or add-ons added to the Quad other than a couple Jam Packs, but on the dual, I have some www.dvdthemepak.com themes installed and it has not affected the Duals performance.
Note: as of yet, I have not done a speed test with the iDVD 5 or previous themes. It may be my next task after I finish up some other projects. Still, using older themes should not affect the encoding of the main video content. But, who knows.. mmm.
    Thanks

  • G5 dual 2.0Ghz bought in 2003+ 30" cinema display?

    Hi all.
I bought the first generation G5 dual 2.0Ghz in 2003 and am sure that I have Radeon 9600 pro video card installed in the computer. Currently, I am thinking of buying 30" cinema display and did some research on it's specification.
I found that Radeon 9600 pro: pc/mac edition is compatible with the monitor, but I am wondering if the 9600 pro version can support the monitor.
If it can't, would anyone like to recommend a good graphic card except 9600 pro:pc/mac edition? Ugrading from original 9600 to 9600-pc/mac edition just sounds like a waste of money because of their similarity of specifications.
Any responce would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks..
    KYE

To find out if your Mac already supports a 30" 2560x1600 resolution, go to the monitor resolution icon at the top of your Finder/menu bar on your desktop. Click on the icon and explore the various resolution possibilities. If they go all the way to 2560x1600 your good to go. No need to buy another card.
Unfortunately, I purchased a similar model in '04 and it does NOT include a sufficiently good enough graphics card to power the 30" [I was told by the apple dealer in '04 that it did. It doesn't.]
My research in to graphics card options for 'our' situation is as follows:
Low End: Radeon 9600 Pro Mac & PC Edition [$199]
Mid Range: Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition* [$250]
    High End: Redeon x800 [$399]
I don't think the Rad9800 can drive more than 2048x1536. This might be satisfactory for you, it's not quite the maximum of 2560x1600, but your menus will be a little bigger at 2048x1536
    Good luck.
My question to no one in particular is: did all early PowerMac G5 towers ship with AGP 8x slots? or 4x slots? or what?

  • Express 8 on a G5 Dual 2.0,  7 gigs Ram, TIger

I'm considering purchasing Express 8 to use on my G5..dual 2.0, 7 gigs RAM in Tiger 10.4.11.
Currently using an Alesis io 14 interface without any problems into Cubase LE 4
Was wondering if anyone can provide some input as to performance issues?
I've read online that some were having issues on various G5's early on..others weren't
Have any issue been resolved, or, were there ever any issues?
also..I run a seperate drive with OS&Apps only and I write to an external SATA drive controlled by a PCI SATA controller (Firmtek/Seritek hardware..very good )
    Input appreciated..thanks
    Pete

Well I'm sure that Apple have designed Logic to use the Mac's resources as efficiently as possible as you suggest. I can't tell you what the workable limits are because I haven't reached them yet. With my limited RAM I'm sure I'd have a problem if I wanted to record numerous tracks at once, but I don't work like that so it doesn't matter to me.
I have some songs with half a dozen audio tracks and 7 or 8 software instruments (external MIDI tracks as well but there's not much required in the way of resources for those) - they all have EQ and often three or four other plug-ins on each track and usually delay or reverb on a bus or two. There's the ability to freeze tracks (i.e. bounce them down to an audio file to limit processor usage - they can be unfrozen if you want to change them) - I really haven't had to use this feature using my G5. I also keep the multiband compressor and a limiter on the main output.
You can monitor processor usage (it shows like two bar graphs, one for each processor) and most of the time mine shows one processor being used about 50-75% and the other only about 10-20%, although admittedly its not something that I'm checking all the time. If you want to concentrate on recording audio in particular then Pro Tools may be better for loads of tracks -its been around for a long time and was designed to run reliably on much less powerful computers than we have now - I don't have much experience of it myself though.
    Hope that helps.

  • Jumper Settings for Second SATA-II drive Installed Into Dual 2.0Ghz G5

I have installed a second SATA-II 500GB Maxtor drive into a brand new (purchased as re-furbished computer from Apple) dual 2.0Ghz PowerMac G5. The drive has four connector pins with a jumper slide over the last pin on the right. Before I power up the computer I want to verify the correct jumper settings. According to the Maxtor website, no jumpers are required since the "serial ATA host automatically determines the master and slave hard drive." And according to a MacSales tech (this is the vendor where I purchased the Maxtor drive) I should pull off the existing jumper. Can anyone verify if this is, in fact, the correct jumper setting (no jumpers on the connector pins) for this drive on this system?
    G5 dual 2.0 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hello! From the Maxtor web site.
"PLEASE NOTE: Unlike standard ATA drives, Serial ATA drives DO NOT require the use of jumpers to configure the drive. Please disregard any references to jumper settings and Master, Slave and Cable Select configurations in the Maxtor Installation Guide."
I'd leave the jumper as is came when you got it. tom

  • 1.8Ghz & Dual 2.0Ghz Logic Boards/Power Supply

I have a perfectly fine working 1.8ghz G5. I also have a dual 2.0Ghz G5. However, the dual doesn't power up. I'm pretty sure it's the power supply. But, I'm not positive.
My question is. Is it possible to put the dual 2.0 logic board into my 1.8ghz machine? The inside of the cases look very similar. Or is there a way to test the logic board of the 2.0 before I take everything apart?
    Thanks..

The CPU speed of a PowerMac G5 is always 2x the bus speed or less. Thus, with the 900 MHz bus speed of the 1.8 GHz motherboard, your 2.0 GHz CPUs would clock down to 1.8 GHz at best.

  • Power Mac G5 dual 2.0ghz (late june 2004) - trouble upgrading video card

Hi, I'd really appreciate any help. I have a PowerPC G5 Tower, dual 2.0 GHz, DVI/AGP version (June 2004 model) with 8gb ram. I recently got the Apple 30" monitor and wanted to run it along side my 20" apple monitor, so I bought the ATI Radeon 9650 dual dvi video card (ATI-G5-9650 Power Mac G5 ATI Radeon 9650 Supports 30" Display 256MB (DVI/DVI) (8X AGP) Video Card). I pulled out my previous video card from the AGP slot and inserted this one into the same slot. I turned on the machine and plugged in both monitors to the dvi ports and both screens were blank when I booted. I tried plugging in only one of the monitors, but again, just blank. Does this mean the card is bad? Did I put it in the right slot?
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

I'm installed an update, not 100% if it was the correc thing to update, but it was all I could find. I went to the ATI site and downloaded the ATI Displays 4.5.7.dmg and installed that as well as the ATI 10.3.6 SW Update.dmg. This was from the ATI site at: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML
Is there another place or something specific for the 9650 that I need to download?
    thanks

Hi.. I’m fed up with all the hype about the new imac core duo being twice as fast as the imac g5 2.1ghz. A lot of the magazines are also saying yes the core duo beats the g5 at this, that, and the next thing. What I’d like to know is how would the core duo have compared in performance had Apple had put a dual core 2.0ghz g5 in the imac like it done with the power mac range.
    Just a thought
    Cheers
    Gerry

I'm curious about this too. In addition to what Gerald says, I note that there's also no mention anywhere of how the new dual core Intel processors perform as compared with, say, the Pentium 4 or whatever number they are at now.
As for the heat business, I see in MacFormat this month that IBM have announced a 4ghz - 5ghz powerpc chip. Apparently they have even tested one running at 6ghz, that they now plan to go in servers. So the PowerPC chip doesn't seem to be dying out now.
I am going to have to upgrade my 6500/300 sometime in the near future and as the Intel chips are going to force me to lose all my Classic software anyway, it seems sensible to work out what all the options are, if you get my gist.
