G5 Dual 2.3 GHz Not Recognizing all of 2nd hard drive space

I just installed a 2nd Western Digital SATA II 500gb internal hard drive. It is only recognizing 465gb. I formatted the drive after installing. Just wondering if any one else has seen this issue before.

Sounds like you are counting to 1000 by stopping at 1000 instead of stopping at 1024 like you should.
Short answer is that one way of counting is used by the marketing division (and for printing the box) and the other is used by your computer. So nothing is wrong.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte under "Consumer confusion" for a more in depth explanation of GB vs GiB.

  • Hard drive not recognized as a separate hard drive

I have a problem that has stumped me, Apple support, and the hard drive support folks.
When I connect my external hard drive(via firewire) to my eMac, it mounts and the icon shows up on the desktop. However, when I click on the external hard drive icon it appears to be a mirror image of my internal drive. What I get is a finder page with all my data from the internal drive available. This happens immediately after I connect the hard drive. It acts identical to my internal drive. If I delete something in my internal drive it is deleted in the external drive and vice versa. When I look under disk utilities both drives are listed and the external drive has the whole drive "available" (500GB). So it appears that the eMac does not recognize the external drive as a separate drive. I have tried a LaCie drive and currently a G-drive with the same results. I tried the G-drive on a friends iBook and it works like it should - showing up blank until data is dragged into it. I'm thinking there must be a setting somewhere on my eMac that is not allowing me to attach an external drive and have it work. I have Time Machine turned off and locked so I know it is not interfering.
    Any ideas?

Did you try Király's suggestion about logging on using a different user account? If necessary, create a new, troubleshooting-only administrative user account (so that all user preferences are freshly created from defaults). If the test user account behaves as expected, that points to a user preference (or possibly the Desktop). Moving the preference file Király mentioned to the Trash or a holding folder, then logging out and back, would be a good start.
I don't know if 10.5 makes enough changes to affect preference checking tools from earlier OS versions; To check your user preferences (.plist) files in Terminal, copy and paste the following and press return:
    find ~/Library -name '*.plist' -exec /usr/bin/plutil -lint {} \;
You can also download Preferential Treatment (which provides a GUI front end to the plutil command).

  • I was thinking of getting a MacBook however I'm a bit worried about it not having enough memory or hard drive space unlike other laptop?

oother laptops have 500gb or 250gb or 1tb so I was a bit worried about the macbook storage and if it will be enough?

The MacBook Air has an SSD, not a mechanical hard drive and since SSDs are more expensive drive sizes tend to be smaller. When I first installed an SSD in my previous notebook I went from having a 750GB mechanical drive to a 256GB SSD. That forced me to rethink how I used the drive since I was using about 600GB of that hard drive. I moved all my music, video, and photos to an external drive since I really didn’t need to keep all that stuff on my notebook which reduced my usage down to well below 300GB. I then began taking a look at the programs, utilities, templates, etc to see what I’d pack ratted away ‘just in case’. Removing most of that stuff took me down to just above 200GB.
The 13” MBA has an SD RAM slot and there are several different products that let you put a card in that doesn’t stick out like a normal SD card would. I have a 64GB card that I keep a selection of music, video, and photos. There are also mini USB cards that have just a little nob sticking out when inserted into the computer that can provide additional space.
Only you can determine if the trade-off for hard drive speed vs lost space (and longer battery life) is worth it.

  • I cannot access all of my hard drive space on my OSX.

When I bought my Macbook Air in 2012, the hard drive was already partitioned into two parts one OS and the other OSX. The OSX part with the operation system only contains about 30 GB of memory, while the other partition has 90 GB. I deleted the second partition to try to put all the memory in the OSX partition of my hard drive, but found that I cannot do so. The OSX portion cannot be increased from the DIsk Utility page. I was hoping someone could help me fix this problem because I need the the extra space to download programming environments that work with the operating system. I attached some pictures of what my storage space currently looks like.

Open Disk Utility, click on the GB Apple SSD device in the sidebar and click on the Partition tab in the main window. Click on the topmost partition in the map then click on the Add [+] button to create a new volume. Click on the Apply button.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner 4.0.5 to clone the OS X volume to the newly created volume. When completed open Startup Disk preferences. Click on the new volume entry then click on the Restart button. Once running from the newly made clone you can now open Disk Utility, click in the old OS X partition then click on the Delete [-] button to remove it. You can now drag the top partition down to fill the empty space. Click on the Carbon Copy Cloner 4.0.5 button.
You are moving your OS around when you do this. You may want to take a backup before you begin - if anything goes wrong you have a way recover. Time Machine is OK, but a bootable copy is better. Carbon Copy Cloner will also do that for you, make one to an external disk to be safe.

  • 6+ minutes takes all hard drive space

If i import 5 minutes of video all is well. If I import 6+ then all the free hard drive space is used and i get an out of memory error. Any suggestions

What version of FCE is this? Most likely your version of QuickTime doesn't work with it. Do a forum search and you'll probably find some solutions.

  • How do I delete Photo Stream photos that are taking up hard drive space in my Masters folder, but not actually appearing in any event, or on the interface at all?

A couple months ago, I activated photo stream using my apple ID. I was under the impression that all the photos uploaded to my photo stream would only use server space on icloud and wouldn't actually utilize disk space, or at the most, the option was available to only download specific photos to my hard drive. My hope was that I could upload the photos to a specific drive, and view the uploaded thumbs or low-res comps on any device as a reference.
    This is not the case.
What I have found is that iphoto has been automatically downloading any and all photos uploaded to my photo stream. Not just the thumbnails, the entire thumbnail + all resolutions. I shoot RAW photos so in my case, the original averages about 15-25MB per photo.
I have been uploading directly to an iphoto library on an external hard drive specifically designated for handling all my RAW high-res images.
What has been happening is all those RAW files are also being uploaded directly to my iphoto library on my iMac and eating up memory which I cannot reclaim, even after deactivating my Photo Stream in preferences. We're talking almost 100 GB of memory is tied up right now.
I don't want to just go in and start deleting files and folders in my Masters folder, since I have heard this will break iphoto, but the photos in my photostream do not show up in any event and I need to reclaim the hard drive space.
How can I safely delete them?

If the files are loose inside the iPhoto library package here's one way to get them out:
1 - open your library, select all of the photos in the library and add a unique keyword, XXXX,  to all of them.
2 - Rebuild the library with  iPhoto Library Manager  as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
3 - open the library, create a smart album with the criterial "Keyword is not XXXX".
4 - the smart album will include those photos that were not visible in your original library. Select them and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move them to the iPhoto Trash bin.
5 - empty the iPhoto Trash bin via the iPhoto ➙ Empty iPhoto Trash Bin menu option.
6 - empty the Trash bin in the Dock to remove the files from your hard drive completely.
Be sure to read Note 1 above.  You can use the new library without your books, slideshow, etc. and it will not  contain those errant files.  Of course delete the original library if the new one is satisfactory.

  • My iMac is disconnecting all my media hard drives and giving "Disk Not Ejected Properly" message since updating to OSX 10.9

Ever since I updated to OSX version 10.9 on my iMac, it is disconnecting all of my media hard drives and giving me the message: "Disk Not Ejected Properly." My hard drives are connected to my iMac through a Nitro Professional 8-port Firewire 800 hub/repeater, and a Firewire 800 cable from the Nitro hub connects to the back of my iMac. This configuration has been working fine for over a year. Suddenly, and immediately after performing the update about a week ago, the drives won't stay connected for more than a few seconds before the iMac disconnects from my drives. I've tried restarting and reconnecting many times and the same thing keeps happening.
I have a new MacBook Pro (one month old) that I've been using temporarily to work with my photos and video on these drives as the drives are able to stay connected to this computer—I put a Thunderbolt adapter onto the Firewire 800 cable to connect to it. Luckily I had not yet updated it to the new operating system and I am afraid to do that. I've had the persistent message that Updates are available for my computer on my MacBook but I will not perform any updates for fear that I will lose access to my media drives. I am a professional photographer, so it's pretty disasterous if I can't access my drives. Please advise me what to do to keep my hard discs connected to my iMac and what to do to keep this from happening with my MacBook.
Thanks in advance for your knowledge and assistance!

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

  • Dv9500 1st hard drive not found / recognized , 2nd hard drive ok

My Pavilion dv9500 doesn't find / recognize hard drive 1 in bios but boots and runs from the 2nd hard drive bay  if I use Hiren's Boot CD to boot to hard drive 1 . I've tried a variety of drives from 80Gb to 1Tb that work in  the 2nd hard drive bay  in the 1st hard drive bay .  I know that my 1st hard drive bay is getting power because I can hear and feel them  run .
Update -  I suspect the sata controller for the 1st hard drive bay is dead . Is it possible to test it ?
Update 2 - Using one of the programs in Hiren's Boot CD ,  it found the controller for the 1st hard drive bay but not the hard drive .

    Hi @Tranny
    Thank you for your reply.
Some older units do have the connections soldered on.  As this is the case with yours your options are to try and get it repaired.  I know that is not what you wanted to hear.
You can try a local repair shop or contact HP support for repair options.

  • Your firmware can not be updated because the hard drive...SMC 1.3

    Hi all !
    I have a problem. I'm have a macbook pro Santa Rosa =
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.27f1
This morning I saw the update for the SMC firmware (1.3).
Before restarting, I have this error :
    http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/6606/26048579.jpg
Your firmware can not be updated because the hard drive partition scheme may not be supported. You must be booted from a GUID partiton or RAID scheme.
When I went into Disk Utility in order to check, here is what I have =
    Name : FUJITSU MHY2200BH Media
    Type : Disk
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
    Disk Identifier : disk0
Media Name : FUJITSU MHY2200BH Media
    Media Type : Generic
Connection Bus : Serial ATA 2
    Device Tree : /PCI0/SATA@1F,2/PRT0@0/PMP@0/@0:0
    Writable : Yes
    Ejectable : No
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
    Location : Internal
    Total Capacity : 186.3 GB (200,049,647,616 Bytes)
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
    Disk Number : 0
    Partition Number : 0
I thought Boot Camp could be involved becauseI know it's the only thing related to the EFI.
I searched on internet, and Ifound nothing. There was a solution in order to reset the partition table, but the tool is no longer available. The link on on the application explains that I have to reformat my macbook pro. I find a bit weird to make this , I can't spend hours for backup / restore just because the SMC update does not work. have you any lead for me ?
    Thanks ,
    Razique

    Have you tried this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • T430s 2nd Hard Drive Bay Caddy not working

    Hi all,
I bought 2nd Hard Drive Bay Caddy for my T430s but it does not seem to work.
The HDDs I placed in it do not even start to spin, and they are not recognized by the laptop BIOS as also by my OSes, Windows and Linux.
The label on the caddy says it is P/N 26r9247, but at this stage I'm not sure is a compatible part or if I got just a faulty item.
    Any feedback?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That part number (26R9247) is for the older T60/61 Thinkpads.  You need the Ultrabay III adapter.  Look at 43N3412.

I want to boot to Solaris on drive 2 from the WinXP boot loader on drive 1. Could somebody please tell me exactly how to do this as I've copied the bootsect.sun file from Solaris via floppy to the WinXP C:\ drive, and edited the WinXP boot loader to:

  • Firefox eventually consumes all available hard drive space while running

I have 1-2 GB available on my hard drive. When I leave Firefox running for a while (a few hours to a few days, not sure what triggers this behavior), my available hard drive space goes down and down until it gets down to 0. If I quit Firefox, the hard drive space frees up.
I always have multiple windows and tabs open. I'd rather not quit Firefox ever, but I have to to get my HD space back. Sometimes it doesn't seem to happen for a long time, and then it starts happening. I've been rebooting about weekly recently and it hasn't helped any.

I would also have assumed it was just variations in VM usage & application or system memory usage - except that it may show, say, 300 MB available AFTER rebooting, and then, without my launching any applications or using the computer, just immediately rebooting a second time, show 2 GB available.... so somehow the space available isn't be allocated properly it seems to me...
I was also afraid that I was running with too little available space - but have been doing so for months now without these problems. I've got a lot of large video files on the drive, no other drive available to transfer them to, no $$ right now for purchases... and didn't want to delete the videos. I need to transfer more to CD/DVD's but have done all the 'easy' ones that are less than 700 MB already, and have to either waste DVD's or take the time to convert them to versions that will allow the DVD to play on TV also - something I haven't tried yet and gather takes a bit of time. So I've been running along with the drive pretty full.
I would really like to know how to find any 'junk files' like temp files, any duplicates, etc that can be safely deleted, but also not sure how to do that on a mac? So there's this issue, and also the first paragraph, e.g., that it seems to me that somehow the space available allocation isn't being properly shown - is there some way I can check that, find out what is using up the space?
