G5 Dual 2.5 CPU Power PC will not boot unless I remove the Plastic Sheild.

G5 Dual 2.5 CPU with 4 gb of memory will boot everytime if I take the plastic sheild out. I bought it from a guy who would turn it on then let it sit until the fans revved up after about 5 to ten minutes. I figured out that it would boot everytime if I removed the plastic sheild. Now I am trying to find a permanent fix for this issue.
Thanks for any assistance anyone can give.

I don't think its just a plastic shield and door - there is a contact switch that signals when these are removed and the fans rev up to a higher speed. My guess is its the higher speed of the fans that's keeping things cool during the power surge of the boot stage thats allowing it to startup.
When the doors are on and the fans are kept low there must be some hardware failure that is occurring during boot up - that seems to be prevented when speeding the fans up. And after the initial boot up power surge, things run cool enough that I can safely put the plastic shield and door back on and the computer keeps running fine (it ran OK all night).
I can think of no other logical explanation at this time.
Any other ideas?
What puzzles me, is I use this computer to do some heavy 3D graphic renders and have run it intensely for days at at time with absolutely no sign of failure during operation once its booted up. I've never had a freeze or anything like that. So when its so reliable during operation, why so fragile during boot up?

I just downloaded an update and my sophos anti-virus is going beserk.  It will not allow me to remove the threat manually when I unlock the quarantine manager and I have no idea of what to do.

The malware it's finding is probably Windows malware attached to e-mail messages. What are the names of some of those things? Assuming they're not Mac malware, allowing Sophos (or any other anti-virus software) to remove them could cause problems. For example, if they're attached to e-mail, removing them improperly by simply deleting the message file will leave the malware on the e-mail server, and it may very well end up getting re-downloaded when your mail client syncs with the server. It may also corrupt the mailbox.
If you actually ever see a malware name starting with MacOS or OSX (I forget which one Sophos uses), then you will need to worry, and should not assume that the malware can be completely removed by anti-virus software of any kind.

  • HT3275 Time machine at home and it will not allow me to remove the listing of my external hard drive from the excluded files list.

Please help guys, I have a Time machine at home and it will not allow me to remove the listing of my external hard drive from the excluded files list.
I am trying to use time machine to back up the hard drive. For backing up from Macbooik pro and Imac, there is no problem. It seems to not want to allow the external drive to be removed from the Excluded list and as such will not back up from it.
Is there a way to be able to transfer files (music, movies etc) to time machine, format the external drive then put the files back to hard drive?
Sorry it is a long winded question but it is driving me nuts that I cant sort this out.
The <Macbook and Imac are both running mountain lion.
    Thanks Guys

As for the hard drive to which you have never been able to write, is it by any chance in NTFS format? OS X can read NTFS for importing files, but it does not contain code for writing on an NTFS volume. That's a choice, not a bug.
There is third-party software available to install NTFS-writing capability into OS X. An example is Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X. Another alternative would be to use a disk format that both Macs and Windows systems can use for both reading and writing; this would require either a new drive or erase the existing data.
If by "the new system software" you mean OS X 10.9 Mavericks, you may want to repost that portion of your query in the Mavericks forum at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mavericks . I haven't made the leap yet.
I don't know what other problems you have been having, so I cannot comment on them. You don't seem to have any other recent postings on these forums.

Sounds like you may have a harddrive issue.  You are probably going to need to get that changed out and then install the OS X again to get it going.

Macbook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. I tried to start in safe mode, but get this same screen. The only thing different is that I added the zedge update app to do a sync for adding ringtones to my apple cell phone. How can I get a good boot. I am fairly new to apple computer.

Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405 and then try a normal boot.
Run the Startup Manager to select Startup disk:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
If those did not work your disk may be sick or dying.  The top priority at this point is to make a backup copy of your data.
Check the health of the disk.  Boot in Recovery Mode (Boot, Command-R).  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Even if it does not show “Verified” you can still attempt a backup.
Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.  Do not attempt software repairs until you have secured the data.
If the disk will not show up at all in Disk Utility as your ran the tests above then it may be dead or it may have a bad internal SATA cable.  A trip to an Apple store for confirmation would be in order.
If you have an external disk drive you can use as a backup drive then do so.  If not Google “Hitachi USB 3.0 external hard drive 1TB” to purchase one or go to a brick-and-mortar store (including an Apple store) to pickup one.  Any 1 TB external drive will do.
Assuming it is still breathing you can try to recover the data without booting from the sick disk.
Reformat the external disk.  (This will erase all data on the external disk.)
Boot in Recovery Mode.  Start Disk Utility.  Plug in the new disk.  Select it’s disk Icon (the second one down, left justified). Select the Partition tab.
    Partition Layout > Single Partition
Name: Emergency Recovery 1 (or whatever name you wish to use)
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Options… > GUID Partition Table > OK
    Apply
    Select the Restore tab.
Drag the old system volume (Macintosh HD) to Source.
Drag the new disk volume (Emergency Recovery 1) to Destination.
    Click on Restore.
It may take a long time for the backup.
If that will not complete post back for other emergency data recovery methods, including those from a brody.
If the backup succeeds, use the First Aid tab in Disk Utility to select the old volume (Macintosh HD) and Repair Disk.  If it does not finish with a green OK message try to repair it once or twice more.  If it repairs with a green OK message, will it boot normally?  If not, boot from the Recovery Partition and reinstall OS X.
If it is still not healthy, post back for further instructions.

  • Cube will not boot... what the heck?

I bought a cube yesterday and it will not boot. This is what has happened so far:
    New hdd
    installed Tiger
    ran updates
    restarted
    ran more updates
    restarted
    would not load fully.
Got to Mac OS X loading screen with varying degrees of success, but it always stops loading and the blue bar freezes. Single user startup works. Safe mode a no-go. Fsck finds nothing wrong with disk. I can't eject the disc that's in there no way no how in order to reinstall OS.
Another oddity: Target disk mode says the disk is unreadable, and says it's 7.1 GB when it's 38 GB. If I initialize the 7 gig bit nothing happened.
I put the drive into an external firewire case and reformatted it but I still cannot get the DVD drive to eject.
What the heck? This puppy passed all the tests yesterday just fine! It was ready to rock and roll until this happened! I am very frustrated! Please tell me my 300 bucks wasn't wasted... I need this computer for my business.
The only thing that I realized might be wrong is that the HDD was in master mode when I first put it in. The drive I removed was in Slave mode (this was the factory drive). I have tried to boot it up in both CS and Slave mode and neither one works.

Hi! Try holding down the mouse button at startup to see if you can get the disc out. You made a calculated mistake that went wrong.
    "New hdd
    installed Tiger
    ran updates
    restarted
    ran more updates
    restarted
    would not load fully."
You probably used Software Update to update the software and sometimes it doesn't work. You should get the install disc back in and then try an archive and install of the os. Don't run any updates until you are sure the system is stable. After you are sure it's stable you can download the 10.4.11 update HERE instead of using Software Update. Tom

  • HT201401 MY NEW PHONE WILL NOT WORK UNLESS CONNECTED TO THE POWER SOURCE

My iphone 4 has been faulty since getting it on contract with 3mobile in jan.  The phone will work when plugged into a power source but not otherwise.  I have contacted apple and followed their inistructions but still not working.  Some one has told me it sounds like the charger connection within the phone does anyone else have this problem ??? i am losing patience with both apple and 3 now

    1. Try doing a hard reset while connected to the adapter:
Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
    2. If that doesn't solve the issue, backup the device and restore it as new.
    In that case, use: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694 for causes and solutions
    Good luck

  • M45-S2653 will not boot unless an external monitor is connected to it

I've got a similar situation with an M45 which I posted to http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/207245-28-toshiba-laptop-locking.  I figured I'd post here too.
I can only shut it down or put it into hibernate by holding the power button until it turns off. After doing that yesterday, I can not get it to start up today.
The sequence of events that occurs is:
Hit power button with power and batter lights both blue.
HDD light goes blue for split second.
Power light goes blue and stays on.
Computer attempts to access DVD drive.
    Computer makes a clicking sound.
Battery light and power light go off.
    Batter light comes back on.
    Computer never boots.
In reading some other posts, I've found the root cause for my issue (sort of). If I hook it up to a monitor, it boots no problem. So...
In order to use my laptop as a laptop now I either need to always carry a monitor with me, or figure out how to get my screen to start playing nicely with the rest of the laptop.
Does this sound like I need a new LCD? Is there anything else I can try? $300 for a new LCD to put in a 3 year old, $500 laptop (when it was new), that is currently only worth the data on the hard drive, it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense...
    Any suggestions?
I can still hit Fn F5 and get either the LCD or the LCD and the Monitor to both display. However, when I shut it down with the LCD working and tried to turn it back on, same problem. It would not boot because the display is in some way defective.
I have updated to the latest BIOS version and graphics adapter files available on the Toshiba website...
It's like the laptop needs a monitor connected to it to jump start it.  Once I connect a monitor, I can run it and use the screen, but I need to do this step each time I either turn it on or bring it out of hibernate...

you did nothing wrong what you have to do go back to your old computer and find where iTunes kept your music (usually in the music folder that is listed in the windows explore, if that does not work do a search for iTunes media) then plug in your external and transfer the music from your old computer to your external. depending on the amount of music and the type of USB cable you have it should be no more then a couple of hours. Once you have done that safely remove your external and plug it in to your new computer and the transfer the music from your external to your new computer. Once you do that have iTunes go and find the music. Hopefully everything will work out

  • Will not startup unless I disconnect the battery

I'm having an strange issue with my macbook pro (2011- 2ghz i7).  It runs fine while on a/c and on battery power.  Problem occurs when I shut it down.
If I tell it to shut down it will not power back on until I remove the back plate and disconnect and reconnect the battery.  Once I do this it seems to run fine.
I will note that my daughter tends to use it until the battery goes dead and on more than one occasion.    The battery seems to hold a charge just fine it's just that the machine will not power on after a shutdown even while plugged in a/c and full battery.

    David,
which version of OS X is installed on your MacBook Pro?
Try starting up in Safe mode, log in, and then shut down. Is your MacBook Pro able to power on without disconnecting the battery then?
If you have a bootable external drive, use Startup Manager to boot from the external drive, log in, and then shut down. Is your MacBook Pro able to power on without disconnecting the battery then?
For the sake of your MacBook Pro’s battery life, your daughter should start recharging its battery when it gets down to 20%.

  • Z87-G45 will not boot unless I enter BIOS or boot menu

    Hi,
I v got some problem with my Z87 - unless I enter BIOS or boot menu(F11), I v got error message "Reboot and select proper boot device....".
When I enter BIOS(or boot menu), and dont change anything, exit&save it boots just OK.
The boot priority is simply the OS drive as 1st and everything else disabled. Every single driver is up to date (using supplied live uptade for board (v1.7 bios), and official inter drivers for OS drive (intel SSD), sound, graphics,... everything). Nothing but mouse, keyboard and LCD is connected to the PC. No DVDs inserted, no USB flash drives. Win7 64-bit clean(except drivers ofc) installation.
Any ideas what might be the problem?
