G5 dual 2.7 powers on but no boot chime, video, keyboard activity

Hello:
I have a Power Mac G5 dual 2.7 from late 2005 w/ 2 GB RAM and no hard drive. Clearly, I won't be able to boot without a system. I bought it without the hard drive, thinking I'd install my own but test with a universal Tiger disk first.
The problem I have is that after I turn the power on, the fans go and the manufacturing LEDs (the two red LEDs indicating that the plastic cover is off and that the optical inputs are present) go on, but nothing else. The keyboard shows no activity, and I can't open the DVD-RW with the open button. No video comes up. I've tried resetting the PMU. The fans start slow, but rev up after a cople of minutes. The logic board shows no diagnostic LED activity, and other than white when I press on or off the power button, no activity from the LED above the power button. I tried reseating the video card and using a new PRAM battery.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks!
Thanks! MZ

I can't open the DVD-RW with the open button.
Either try holding the Mouse button down while powering on, or slide the door down and use a paper clip in the tiny hole there to force open it.
Did you replace plastic cover & close it up?

  • Toshiba Portégé m400 powering up but not booting problem

Hi people this is the first time I have posted on the toshiba forums. My toshiba m400 tablet laptop stopped booting recently and I am unable to find an answer to my problem. The laptop is refurbished I bought it off e-bay 6-7 months ago so the 2 month warrenty is out. It worked fine up until recently History: about 2 weeks ago it started to hang then about 1 minute later the fan would go really loud and the only way to get the laptop to work was to pull the power and reboot, it started off about once per day I thought that it was just weird and ignored it until it got more frequent. then about 1 week later it when I tried to boot the laptop the power light would go on and nothing would happen then a while later the fan would start being really loud. What I tried: I replaced the battery as I thought it was a power issue, still not working I did some research and thought it might be a over heating issue because of dust.I got a techncian friend to look at it they opened it up and cleaned the dust out, still not working Connected it to an external monitor in case it was the screen that was not working , the screen didnt show anything Currently I push the power switch and the 1st light from the left, the power light goes on and I can hear the fan and hard drive working but nothing is displayed on the screen and I dont think the system is booting. The same thing happens regardless of what battery I use or if the laptop is plugged in. So currently my laptop is a paperwieght does anybody have any suggestions besides buy a new laptop

  • I've tried PRAM reset, repair disk and permissions but cannot boot up after recent install of OSX 8.4. Please help

After having to do a forced shut down (holding down power button) due to freezing I cannot again progress past the grey screen with the apple logo. The spinning cog comes on at first then disappears leaving just the apple logo (in case that is sognificant).
I have tried to find a solution through the support pages but have unfortunately been unsuccessful in my endeavours so do apologise I have overlooked the obvious and would really appreciate some help. I've just started the second year of my Uni and the timing couldn't be worse.
    I have tried the following:
    1) held down option and started in "recovery 10.8.4" from which I used disk utility to "repair disk", which at first needed some repairs and then I ran it again for the second time to confirm it had a clean bill of health.
    2) I then ran "repair disk permissions" and repeated a second time to confirm it was all working well (however one error remained "warning: SUID file "system/library/CoreS... has been modified and will not be repaired" but have read that this should not be a big problem) After which I tried to start up again and it hung with the apple logo on the grey screen.
    3) tried resetting the PRAM by holding down cmd+option+P+R before powering up, but it only chimes once and then restarts the mac, then chimes once and repeats the process again in and endless cycle.
    4) I then tried 1 and 2 again and then tried to reinstall OSX 10.8.4 from the recovery mode, but this came up with the message "an error occured while preparing the installation. Try running this application again" to which I followed but to no avail.
    5) I tried starting up in safe mode by holding down shift after the chime at startup but safe mode did not start after 3 hours. During which point I was drowning my frustration in the pub.
    6) I tried starting in verbose mode with cmd+V but after running the script it reverts back to the grey screen.
I have not tried booting from an install disk as im a few hours from home on a uni campus with no apple store in sught and all day lectures so no hope to visit far away stores. I hope I have explained it in enough detail and appreciate any direction or thoughts as to it being salvageable.  Failing which it might be time go go back to the pub and remember the importance of regular backups!
    Many thanks
    Stephen

I have one more development to add. In step "4" above I suspected that it could be something to with the Ethernet settings as I hadn't had the option of typing in the colleges wifi credentials. So I tried the "get help online" option to test it, managed to sign in and tried the step 4 again.
This time I received a different error message "could not find installation information for this machine".
    Thanks

G5 dual 2ghz.  Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard.  Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue.  What's happening?

I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
    Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.
    They aren't Lithium-ion batteries

  • Quicksilver dual 1GHz 2002 powers off for no reason.

My Quicksilver dual 1GHz 2002 powers off for no reason. Could it be because of overheating? I can run it for an hour or 2 and then it simply powers off as if the electricity went off. No warning, no process. I can wait 30 min and power it up for maybe 10 min and the same thing. Does anyone know what may be causing this? There are some logic bd problems too. It will not shut down. I must hold the power button down until it goes off, and to start it up, I must unplug it f power then replug it into the wall to start it up. Yes it is time for a new one, but this one would be nice as a 2nd Mac.

Hello! Look in apps>utilities>console and see if it's throwing a crash log that might narrow down the problem. It could be a weak power supply that's failing when it gets warmed up or a fan that has quit. Tom

  • I have a ibook that powers up but has no display, is it an easy fix? how much will it cost?

I have a ibook that powers up but has no display, is it an easy fix? how much would it cost to fix

    Hi,
Can the sounds of an active hard drive be heard at some point (indicating a normal startup)?
There is a problem with the graphics processing unit (GPU) and its ball grid array (BGA) on some iBook computers, leading to similar symptoms. Reflowing (resoldering) the BGA is a work for specialists, and is going to be expensive. A web search will  return a number of more or less realistic alternative attempts to solve the issue. Outside pressure applied to the affected area has sometimes been used for troubleshooting, or even as a temporary "solution".
It is of course possible that the iBook in question has a completely different fault, such as a broken display cable.

Try booting into Safe Mode , if it works then you know its a software issue. If not then  you will have to take it in for service.

  • G4 powers up, but apple display doesn't

    Hi all,
My G4 (sawtooth) powers up, but the display does not. Display has power but no image and light stays amber and not green. How do I tell which one is broken? Can I connect my G4 to another mac like a powerbook or Imac?
    Any help is welcomed.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Nelson,
Firstly it's best to post exact details of your setup, as it makes it easier for people to help! (Make and model of monitor, type of connection etc).
First thing to try is to make sure the cabling between computer and display is all ok: make sure the VGA (I'm guessing) is screwed in firmly. Alternatively try another cable. You could also try the monitor with another computer - this will help you identify where the problem is.
The other thing to check for is whether the computer is starting up: can you hear the hard drive working for a minute or so after you switch the machine on? If so, and if the monitor works with another computer it could be that the computer's output resolution is too high for the monitor.

Recently, I can't get any sound from my game applications.  Sound works fine with video, streaming, etc, but not my game applications.  I've tried powering down and re-booting, but the sound does not return.  Can anyone help me?

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via control centre : swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and it's the right-most of the 5 icons in the middle of it (if the icon is white then it's 'on', tap it to turn it grey and 'off'). The function that isn't on the side switch is set via control centre instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • Windows 8 HP Pavillion powers up but then shuts down.

A friend asked me to have a look at his HP Pavillion p6-2302eam Series Tower PC running Windows 8 which basically refuses to complete a boot up. The device is two years old and out of warranty.
It powers up but then goes into Automatic Repair for a while followed by the Restart or Advanced option. Leaving it on that screen it runs ok, which to me seems to rule out heat sink problems. Selecting Restart it dies. Running the Advanced options I haven't tried Use a Device. In Troubleshooting carrying out a refresh sees the device run away on its diagnostic but so far it's got up to about 85 % then shut off. I'm tried a restore but that bombed out.
The owner told me that he plugged in a wireless mouse a few weeks ago. I've removed the usb dongle for that. No difference.
I'm wondering if there is any 'well known' issue with this particular PC?
I currently have the 1TB HD in an external caddy running a virus check which will be followed by a malware check. Windows is asking to run a Scan and fix on both the OS and Recovery partitions.
When I boot the PC it obviously recognises the absence of the HD runs on for about two minutes (fans running ok) then shuts itself down.

    HI,
Sounds as if the PC's HDD has severe system file corruption or may be failing. Have you run any boot time hardware diagnostics?
Was the failed factory recovery run from the HDD or did your friend create an HP Recovery disc set? You cannot Reset, Refresh, System Restore, or HP Factory recover the PC from the Advanced Startup, Troubleshooting screen.
Is this the PC in question? p6-2302eam is not directing me to the product number.  HP is not providing the option to order a Win 8 Recovery disc set at the Software and driver download site for the link I provided but I am not positive that product is your friend's PC. No other third party sites are offering an HP Recovery kit for that product number either.
Try a different HDD and run the HP factory recovery if you have the HP Recovery DVD set.
You may have to contact HP for assistance.
It is possible to download a Win 8 OEM .ISO file, burn to disc or USB, and then install. But you have one additional problem; the product key on Win 8 PC's is now embedded and encrypted in the BIOS. No COA sticker on the tower. You will need the product key to activate a clean Win 8 install.

Should I check the memory cards themselves? Reseat them?
    Yes.
Memtest X or Rember to test the RAM.
    Reseat is also good.
The iPhone 4 doesn't like USB 1.1 much.
after the update the computer was working well, except for this freeze when ever I connect iPhone.
I'd try USB 2.0 PCI. That's how I connect my iPhone 4s, and have connected all iPhones and iPods, to my G4.
    Never an issue.
Can't say the same for USB 1.1.......
The above (previous post) linked PCI card is cheap enough.
    Want cheaper, try this:

  • NB200-10Z powers up but the screen is blank

    Hi
    i have a Toshiba netbook NB200-10Z.
It powers up but the screen is blank.
Can anyone help me coz i don't know the cause to it

    Hi
    Try this:
Remove the battery and disconnect the AC adaptor.
Then wait a little bit (1 hour should be enough)
Then connect both parts again and try to power up your NB200.
If its not a serious issue, then your NB200 should power up properly.
Otherwise its a serious issue and you will need an professional help from an ASP technician.

Well, actually that's no reset hole, that's the microphone hole...
So it won't start even when plugged in to the power? What happens, does it start to boot and not complete or does it do absolutely nothing when you press the sleep/wake button?
Have you tried plugging it into a Mac or PC running iTunes and resetting it to factory defaults from there?
