G5 Dual 2.7 - should I upgrade to Leopard?

Tiger is fine, but just purchased standalone Leopard. Having buyers remorse after hearing that others with my configuration have not had a pleasant time.
Need constructive input. Time is money with these installations -just want to make sure I should keep Leopard only on Intel Macs. Also- how about iMac G5?

Hi Kurt Triffet;
I am running Leopard on a PowerMac G5 Quad without any problems at all.
But sine you say that Tiger is fine and that time is money, I would say that foregoing the upgrade to Leopard might be the best plan in your case.
If you do decide to go ahead with Leopard, I would strongly suggest that you clone the system drive and test the clone to be sure it boots. Once you do that I would suggest you do an Upgrade to get to Leopard. With the clone as a fallback in case anything goes wrong you should be able to get back to the current working system very quickly.

  • Should I upgrade to Leopard on a PowerMac G5?

    Running Tiger 10.4.11 on a PowerMac G5 1.6 GHz, 2GB RAM currently.
Will upgrading to 10.5 slow things down significantly? Any possible downsides?
    Thx.

Slow down? Probably not; in fact your Mac may run a bit faster. This of course presumes that your applications, utilities, drivers, etc. are Leopard-compatible. That's the downside; you may have to spend money for upgrades or, if you have older programs, may not be able to get an upgrade to Leopard for some software.
But I would turn the question back on you; why do you feel that you want or need to upgrade? If we know what's driving your thought process, we may be able to provide more specific suggestions/advice.
    Regards.

  • Should I upgrade Snow Leopard and to what?

Currently I have a model 11,3 iMac and an early 2008 Macbook. I updated the Macbook to Lion as a fresh install (with migration using Time Machine) as I wanted to utilise full disk encryption on the internal hard drive and any external portable drives I took with me. My iMac is left running Snow Leopard.
As things have moved on there now seem differences with Apple applications such as iPhoto (library gets updated/upgraded) and I am left wondering whether to upgrade the iMac from Snow Leopard?
If so, to what? If I go to Mountain Lion then I am on an OS that my Macbook cannot use but if I only go to Lion I may find issues that others on forums have indicated whereby they ended up downgrading. Are these unlucky downgraders victims of in-place upgrades rather than re-installs? I really like SL and see no reason to upgrade as I am no fan of the iOS appearance of the system in Lion (and ML). However, the security patches have stopped, the World has moved on, and I also cannot access those FileVault encrypted drives.
    What do people advise?
The way I'm looking at it is...
Snow Leopard - cannot read encrypted disks, iPhoto libraries updated/upgraded in Lion etc, unsupported, but I do like the OS
Lion - keeps both systems the same, may have issues with upgrade as indicated in forums (were they early adopters? in-place upgraders?).
Mountain Lion - latest and greatest, said to be improvement on Lion, may end up with backwards compatibility issues in iPhoto just like Lion -> SL

    Hi, panto74.
It looks like you're in a little bit of a spot, and you ask some good questons.
I know this doesn't directly answer your questions, but here is some food for thought.
Consider this option... upgrade your iMac by way of an external HD.  By that I mean, purchase an external drive and install OS X 10.8.1 Mountain Lion on that.  Then migrate your user accounts and data onto the the new drive, use System Preferences to set it as your startup drive, and use it for a while - an evaluation period, if you will.
By doing this you get to determine if 10.8 is what you expect - see how it behaves for you. And, if you don't like it, you haven't yet wiped your startup disk and can simply reselect that drive and OS as your boot and go about your day using SL. Very little muss and fuss. If worse come to worst, you haven't munged your original setup, and now you have an external HD that you can use for other purposes, such as data backup or external storage.
Another option that comes to mind... since you have already interrupted the feng shui or balance of your two machines by upgrading the MacBook... why not upgrade the MacBook to the next level?  This way you still have the comfort of using SL on your iMac, and you won't have moved BOTH machines into the realm of the unknown. You can even upgrade your MacBook with an external startup hd as I described above.
As for the question of why some users have poor luck when upgrading/downgrading... the answers are about as varied as the problems are. There are so many things that can affect the process.
Of course, whatever you do, PLEASE make sure you have backed up your data before you make any move on your iMac... or MacBook, for that matter.
    I hope this is helpful.

  • Should I upgrade to Leopard or Snow OS?

    Hi everyone!
I have one of the first MacBook Pro's. I got it on September 2006, and still have the Tiger OS. I bought it with 1GB RAM, but upgraded it to 2GB about 1 year ago. I'm a designer, so I mainly use the Adobe Suite, and sometimes find my oldie Mac going slow... but it's still working.
I wasn't really interested in upgrading to the Leopard OS, but I'm recently considering it since I just got the new Iphone 4 and I discovered that I cannot sync them together unless I have the 10.5 upgrade.
I was wondering, if you could advice me on whether it could be good to upgrade my mac to leopard, or if you think doing this would just make my computer even slower and harder to work with the Adobe software.
    Thanks
    MJ

Well, according to Wikidot, a trusted site, your version of Adobe is fully supported when running Snow Leopard as your OS.
So, you might as well upgrade to the Snow Leopard box set. It includes iLife'11 and iWork with Snow. And it's the same price and most often cheaper then Leopard all by itself. Also, a legit copy of Leopard is pretty hard to find.
Let us know if you intend to do so. Make sure all your apps. are Snow ready by reviewing that site. We can help you find sites you need for that too and help get your system ready for the Snow upgrade.

  • Have LR 1.3 working on Tiger OS... should I upgrade to Leopard

I recently bought an 20" IMac and was pleased that it came with Tiger installed so I could use LR while waiting for the 1.3 update.
Is anyone using LR with Leopard and are all the features in LR working?
Are all the features involved with Lepard working?
I am real interested in using Leopard's Time Machine application.

    Claude,
could you please share the url of these updated drivers (is this the beta drivers for Leopard -- I've not tried that).
I know there has been a great deal of discussion on the topic, but a precise solution to following I've not found:
The Epson SP 3800 driver I downloaded from the Epson site today was labeled as Leopard compatible (though it is not the beta written for the Leopard system) but did not print correctly from LR 1.3 on Leopard (10.5.1). I selected my paper profile for 3800 in LR and turned off printer color management in the print dialog. The exact same printing settings from Tiger in LR 1.2 and 1.3 prints very close to what my calibrated monitor suggests. The print from Leopard was washed out with a magenta cast. So, that url and advice would be most welcome!

  • Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.
If this answered your question please consider granting some stars: Why reward points?

  • Should I upgrade to 3GHz or upgrade to X1900 XT instead

Should I upgrade to 3GHz or upgrade to X1900 XT instead??
Which of these would give me more bang for the money I spent? Would the better graphics card help me when Leopard is here? or is the extra CPU better?
    Your opinions are needed!
    Thanks

I think it's exactly 10%. Everything in the system
runs as a multiple of 133Mhz. The 3Ghz CPUs aren't
    really 3Ghz but 2.93Ghz (i.e. 22*133Mhz versus
    20*133Mhz for the 2.66Ghz CPUs).
    This is not true.
Intel's information on their Website states that they are indeed 3 GHZ, actually using an 8x multiplier:
The FSB is actuallty 333MHz FSB is quad pumped (for 1333 MHz total per chip), not 133 MHz.
Therefore the actual speed of the chip is 2.997 GHz (effectively 3GHz) using a 9X multiplier.
The 2.66 is an 8 multiplier (2.664 GHz).
You may be confusing the Xeon 5100 series with it's 1333 MHz bus with the Core 2 Duo chip. They are actually the same chip with two important exceptions:
    1) The Xeon 5100 series allows for multiple processors (e.g. 2 dual core chips)... Core 2 Duo only allows for one chip.
    2) The Xeon 5100 series has a choice of 1066 or 1333 MHz FSB (1333 only in the 2.66 and 3.0 models), whereas the Core 2 Duo chips are only up to a 1066 MHz FSB for now (266 MHz quad pumped).
Thus the top line Core 2 Extreme only runs at 2.93 GHz, which on that chip is an 11X multiplier.
The extra FSB speed of the 5100 gives a slight bandwidth and speed increase over the Core 2 all other things being equal.

  • What should I upgrade next

Thank for everyones help so far.  It seems the computer I have is a .little under speced so I was wondering what I should consider upgrading next.  Memeory, CPU and GPU may be the answer but I am a student so need to take things slowly.
I Cuppently have the following setup:
    GA-Z77-DS3H Motherboard
    Intel i5 3550 CPU
    16GB 1666 Memory
    550 Ti GPU
I have odered a RAID0 DUAL drive enslosure and have 2*2TB Baracuda 72000 Drives.  Things generaly play without dropped frames in my current setup (FW800 Media Drive) so I dont think HD is the issue and when I get the new enclosure I will be more than doubeling disk throughput (I am editing DSLR/AVCHSD fottage whitch has a relativly low bandwidth).
Alough it is not dropping frames playback is not ideal.  A lot of the time I have sync but it does tend to go out and I have ot stop/start to get it back. This has led me to think it is the CPU/GPU that I should consider upgrading next.  CPU is way under 50% so that makes me think GPU.  Is GPU used to play DSLR/AVCHD?
    So hat do people think?
    Ben

    Jim Simon wrote:
Is GPU used to play DSLR/AVCHD?
The GPU isn't used for any playback.  It helps with effects, scaling, color space, resolution and frame rate differences, but decoding for playback is always handled by the CPU.
That isn't exactly the case.  The graphics card still has to put the pixels on the screen and refresh the frame and I kid you not, I've seen PCs too slow to do that.  Remember all those emachines and HP's that shipped out in 2008 with the geforce 6150 onboard?  They cannot play youtube videos at full screen without chopping frames in half and skipping even with a high powered dual athlon chip and tons of RAM.  They can't play DVDs or video files above about 640x480 either.  All programs use the graphics card to some extent but playback of an unmodified video clip requires practically no calculations, just the OS telling the graphics card to create the separate graphics layer and put it on the screen.  In your case, with the 550TI, it's fast enough to play anything though.
I don't think external media limitations would result in individual dropped frames though so I can't figure out what's causing your problem.  That would cause temporary pauses when the buffer in memory runs out (on long videos) but not frames to drop.
Then it depends on many varibles: the controller inside the enclosure and the controller on your motherboard. Some USB 3.0 setups can barely reach 100 MB/s in maximum sustainable transfer speed; other combinations can reach at least 150 MB/s.
Luckily all actual Intel chipset-based controllers run at exactly the same speed since they're all exactly the same controller.  They're fast too.  Those dumpy aftermarket ones thrown on budget motherboards have severe performance issues though.  Some PCI-E controller cards don't do so well and some outperform the Intel versions so that's a real grab bag.
If you have a bunch of hard drives though, your PC probably has 1 SATAIII controller and 1 SATAII controller and that's it so the bandwidth is shared by all devices connected to them.  So because of that, I'd stick with USB3.0.  It's definitely not good enough for some sort of external RAID though, as it will hit the upper limit of speed really quickly and not perform at full speed.

  • I regularly have 15 MB of Available Memory - Should I upgrade or is there an issue I should solve first? EtreCheck report pasted below

    Hello,
My MacBook is running super slow. I downloaded Memory Clean from the App Store and I regularly have 15MB or free memory available.
In Activity Monitor I usually see the following:
    ~800 MB kernel_task
    ~500 MB softwareupdated
    ~500 MB Image Capture Extension
    In Console, I see mdworker.bundle errors attributed to UID's: 501, 503, 1422
My current UID from what I can tell is 502. Other UID's left over from various upgrades are 89, 99, 235.
Lastly, Drive Genius is giving me a Drive Integrity Warning. But I can't create a bootable clone.
I have no idea if the above problems are related. I'd like to think I just run a lot of stuff that eats my memory and upgrading the RAM would be the easy path. What say you all?

  • Should I upgrade my 2008 iMac from 10.6 to 10.7 or 10.8?

I'm wondering (a) should I upgrade at all and what to and (b) if I do can I go back to 10.6 somehow?
    (a) I would like to have increased connectivity between my iMac and iOS devices via iCloud, and I like the new Mail app in Lion/ML. Anyone got experience with older iMacs running Lion or ML?  How well do they cope?  Any advantages or disadvantages of note?
If a lot of people find that performance is really bad on similar iMacs the following is not relevant. (I have increased RAM to 4GB (max) and have a 320 GB HDD)
I was thinking of some ways to upgrade that might allow me to just see how the iMac handles a new OS and still allow me to go back to SL if it slows down too much.
    1. Install Lion on a partition.  If it works well install Lion onto whole system, if not delete partition.
    2. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6 via a Time Machine backup (doubt that would work).
    3. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6  via a backup in other software (CCC for example – which I don't have yet – might work?).

First check that your Mac meets the System requirements for Lion...
    Lion Tech Specs  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/SP629
    See here to Buy it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
If so Contact Apple in your Country to Purchase a Lion Download code...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    In the US...
    1-800-MY-APPLE or 1-800-676-2775
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Also... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Lion.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
You should also consider more RAM... Lion is a hungry beast...
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/
If in the UK... Go to http://www.crucial.com
It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
Those sites also have videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...

  • Should I upgrade the hardware or replace the laptop?

I have a late 2006 model Macbook that I received in Decemeber 2006. I'm interested in purchasing a new Macbook, but am also wondering whether I should instead upgrade the hardware? The Macbook seems to always be pushing itself harder than it should as the fan is always audible and always has been, so much so that when I use Skype the person on the other line can't hear me very well because of it. It heats up like crazy too at every use. Sometimes it runs so slowly that it can take 45 minutes to even just close some tabs and windows down as it has to think about it first (spinning beachball). I'm in Uni at the moment and have been for a while now and would love for my laptop to run like it used to when I first got it, or even be able to update it's software (but even that's not possible because it's hardware isn't compatible). I've transferred a lot of my data onto an external harddrive to free up some space and help it run better, but it's still pretty slow in comparison to today's computers.
    Any ideas?

i would suggest going for a new Macbook or a refurbished one from Apple.
normally, i would suggest upgrading the RAM and swap the hard drive for a SSD.  unfortunately, that might not even work for you.
once you upgrade your apps to the current version, they tend to be more memory and processor intensive.
so upgrading your macbook might be a waste of money.
again, those are my thoughts and you can either go with it or ignore it.....
If you own a late 08 Macbook Uni like I do, then I would suggest to upgrade the RAM and go with a SSD to give it a couple of years more but because you have a 2006, buying a new one would be a better option especially if you want to install Mountain Lion.
    good luck..

  • GMA X3100 Macbook-Should I upgrade to Snow Leopard?

I've read all kinds of horror stories about this Graphics Card GMA X3100 and Snow Leopard. I see that SL doesn't support it. I'm running ok on 10.5.8.
Should I upgrade or not? I'm mostly doing audio in Logic Pro and will be doing more HD video in iMovie for YouTube etc.
I like to hook up an older monitor to mirror my Macbook's. I've read where people have had problems with this after upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6.
Should I stay on 10.5 or will I get any benefit from 10.6? I'd like to get as close to up to date as possible if it'll be good for me. Thanks!
