G5 dual 2 Ghz freezing up with Leopard

I have had a problem with this mac freezing up, applications that are launching cannot be quit and often even a three finger quit yeilds no dialogue box. The only way out after 7 or 8 minutes of nothing is to power down using the front fascia switch, something i am very loathe to do and is now one of the most normal ways to get any sense.
I now have an idea what is happening. I have 2 Iomega Ultramax drives, one is 1TB and i bought for time vault. Originally i was running the two drives daisy-chained through FW800 but recently the older 650gb drive has a tendency of leaving the desktop and on restart only the 1Tb was mounting on the desktop. After a call to Iomega they say daisy-chaining is not supported although they were unable to say why it had been working up to this point for a few weeks.
Anyhow I took the older drive and connected through a USB hub via USB 2 rather than firewire 800. This improved the mountin issue and the drive mounts but after a few minutes operation applications still freeze and if i try to open this drive i get a SPOD whilst it fails to open the drive in finder.
On this basis I have found that in this terminal state of hanging by powering down the 650mb drive although giving me a slap on the wrist warning, breaks the hang and applications that were opening open and all the usual control of the pc is restored until the drive is restarted and mounts back onto the desk top.
I am coming to the conclusion this problem is not one with Iomega but is an Apple Leopard issue It seems theleopard is trying to access this external drive and is failing resulting in a rather long hang. I am hoping 10.5.2 fixes this as I am presuming the whole problem is being caused by some kind of analysis of the Ultramax 650 content is not being resolved and the lockup is only sorted if we crash a drive. This can be up to 3 times an hour and is making it nearly impossible to work on this mac.
Is there anybody out there running two firewire ultramax drives on their computer and having no problems in mounting them onto the dsktop using the same fw 800 cable...
Any advice appreciated thanks for any replies
Adie

I too am having the same problem. I have a 2ghz G5 with Leopard and an Iomega Ultramax 650Gb. Everything seems fine, but after a couple of hours the OS hangs when trying to access the HD. Nothing works to resolve the issue (Force quit doesn't work, etc.) The OS comes back to life after powering down the drive. Then, after powering up the drive everything works fine for a couple of hours - then the issue hits again - very frustrating. Running Disk Utility 'Verify Disk' on the drive yields a green 'Drive appears to be OK' message.
This seems to have only been an issue for about a week.
I'm running 10.5.1, the Iomega Ultramax 650 is connected via FW800 to my G5 2Ghz.

  • Is it OK to Swap a Dual 1.25 Ghz Logic board with a Dual 1 Ghz one?

I need to replace the logic board in my original Dual 1.25 Ghz MDD Powermac G4. I found one that came from a Dual 1 Ghz Powermac. The person selling it says that they are identical.
Anyone know if it is alright to install the Dual 1 Ghz logic board with Dual 1.25 Ghz processors (and in the dual 1.25 case)? Thanks.
Dual 1.25 Ghz MDD Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have a dead dual 1.25 MDD. Indications are that the problem is either the logic board or the processors. I have heard the MDDs are known to have more logic board failures that other Macs, so I am thinking about replacing that...
Does anyone know how much could I expect to pay for the just the logic board?

  • Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)?

    Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)
Starts up with bong and then a long wait then screen comes on with old time smiley Mac and spinning beach ball then another long wait and then OS X loading bar and then a panic screen. Subsequent start, bong, and then hard drive spins for 6 or 7 minutes, then hard drive stops and then nothing. Could this be symptomatic of a hard drive failure?
    Thanks very much.

I am pleased to report that I think the problem has been solved. Apparently the strange behavior can be attributed to overheating. After some on line research and the help of people on this list I opened the case and found that the logic board fan was clogged full of lint and dust. After cleaning it I discovered that the fan is inoperable. The computer is now operating with the case open and a small electric fan directed at the logic board heat sink. The computer has been operating flawlessly now for several hours. Will have to replace the bad cooling fan and clean the computer regularly. Thanks so much to all of the people who have responded to my request for help. Would like to mention that a firm with a canine connection charged me over a hundred dollars to report that their diagnosis is a faulty logic board.
    Thank you.

  • Dual G5 1.8 GHz screen/keyboard freezes (new with 10.4.6)

Three times in the past month the screen and keyboard on my dual 1.8 GHz G5 (first generation) have "frozen" as I closed windows or Command-tabbed between running applications.
When the screen and keyboard are frozen, the menubar clock does not increment, but I can still move the cursor across the screen with the mouse. The machine itself is not frozen. I can log into it as a server from my MacBook Pro, read files from its hard drives and write files to its hard drives, but I cannot do anything from the machine's own keyboard. If I press the "sleep" LED on my Apple LCD display, the LED dims but doesn't extinguish, and the machine doesn't sleep. If I hold down that LED on the monitor, the machine will power off. On reboot, the recovered files folder in the trash holds six files whose names all start with "dftmp" (five of the six are named dftmpGELNNHAM with some subsequent lower case k and other characters, the sixth dftmpCPEMKHAM, also followed by a string of k and other lower case characters. The Recovered Files folder in the trash also contains a SENDMAIL folder, which is empty.
One diagnostic suggestion I received was to open Activity Monitor and the Console to see if anything unusual occurred (spikes in processor usage or RAM usage, for example). I have the logs, and just a few minutes ago another freeze occurred (the console's display and the Activity Monitor display freeze along with everything else). I'm not capable of interpreting the logs.
Rebooting after this most recent freeze, the CPU usage bar graph now shows the two processors alternating in rhythmic spikes of CPU usage by System (from a low of 5% to a high of more than 30%, the spikes being about 18 seconds apart per processor (so total System CPU usage peaks at 30% or thereabouts every 9 seconds). My sense is that this is not normal, and my MacBook Pro certainly doesn't do this. At the moment, the only things I'm doing on the machine are typing this message, downloading in Thoth, and watching the logs and Activity Monitor.
Is anyone interested in looking at my console logs? Is there someone else I should report this to? It's not something I can show to my local Genius, because this has happened only 3 times in a month. On each occasion, the freeze occurred when I was closing windows or changing focus from one window to another, but I cannot reproduce the freeze at will.

  • G5 Dual 2.5GHz freezes with a very high pitch sound

    Hi
My G5 Dual 2.5GHz freezes with a very high pitch sound from inside the comp. It happens occasionally after a few days of everything running smoothly. Someone can help ?

    Hi Phil Brayshaw-
What does the little white power light do? This should be helpful: About the Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) diagnostic LEDs
Although it sounds to me like you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, this document is a good overall reference to address this particular problem: Power Mac G5: What to do if you see black, white, or no video at start up
Have you tried another monitor and/or double-checked your cable and its connections? If everything else is working as expected that would certainly be a major suspect.

  • Dual Boot with Leopard and Tiger

I've got a Dual 2 GHZ Power Mac, that I recently put Leopard on. Unfortunately there's a program that I need to used for a job that doesn't play well with Leopard (yeah, I shoulda made sure before the upgrade). What I was wondering is if it was possible to partition part of the system drive and load Tiger back onto it, and then be able to boot from either Tiger or Leopard. That way I can load the programs that are only friendly with Tiger on to that partition.
Or do I need to get another drive entirely and pull the Leopard system drive out?
    Thanks in advance

Hi. You can install as many different systems on different volumes/partitions as you wish. They can all be mounted at the same time, and you can select the default system to boot from in System Preferences > Startup Disc - or select at boot time by holding down the Option(alt) key as you Startup. But a system must be the only one on that volume/partition.
Where to put the 10.4 system is more tricky. If you only have one internal drive, it's possible to re-partition it live - but not really a very good idea.
It would be best to install 10.4 on a second internal drive - or a volume on that drive - or on an external FireWire drive.
Needless to say all your data should be well backed-up before starting any of this.
Rather than go through all the combinations - please post again with any detailed questions. Good Luck.

  • Power Mac G5 dual 2 gHz with graphic problem ?

Hi to all : On my G5 dual 2 GHz (Model    M9590LL/A) I installed OSX 10.5 and updated it to 10.5.8.
The machine works fine. But the system preference window is just a white empty rectangle.
The corresponding menus work fine, but I cannot know what is the content.
I reinstalled it 3 times, every time with the same result.
Leaving the system at 10.5, updating by internet or from the CD resulted in the same problem.
I reformatted the disc, so it was a fresh install every time.
The machine has 8 GB RAM.

  • 1 ghz G4 powerbook with 768 megs of ram, Leopard?

Hi, should I update my 1 ghz G4 powerbook with 768 megs of ram with leopard? will it run faster or slower than the current OS which is 10.4.10.
    Thanks

    Good Afternoon,
I'm afraid that is a question only you can answer based on your need for the new features in OS X 10.5 versus 10.4.10.
Statistically, yes, you can upgrade to Leopard however with that limited amount of memory you may experience a less than ideal user experience from Leopard. If you do consider upgrading to 10.5 you will want to also budget in a RAM upgrade to the maximum supported amount by your Powerbook.
Personally if I was going to spend that much money on an upgrade to 10.5, I'd consider saving my money a bit longer and just replace the equipment with something a bit newer such as one of the new Santa-Rosa MacBooks.
    Just my thoughts! 

  • Freezing sinc with Dual G5

I've been reading these post to see if I can find an answer to my problem, but I didn't see any, or missed it.
If I connect my touch iPod 2.3 to the dual g5 it freezes when it starts to sync a song or two, but usually the first song, and if it does make it through that first song it may take hours. This has been happening for awhile, and upon every iTunes update or iPod update never helped that.
It's obviously a problem with the G5 because I can sync with my powerbook g4 no problems, but my main computer is the G5, so I'd like to get it to work.
I've restored the iPod software and used the new iTunes 5 still doesn't work, so I had to connect it to my G4 and it works like a charm.
This has been ongoing, and every time I get a new song or add something to iTunes on the G5, I'd have to put it on my G4 then connect my iPod to the G4 syncs like a charm.
It just doesn’t not sync on the G5 and it freezes or locks up with the rainbow ball on a continuous spin, and I'd have to force quit iTunes.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem or know of another thread regarding it?

    I am having similar problems.
I recently bought a G5 and everytime i try to sync my iPod with my itunes playlist it does not even get through the first song. I have to force quit iTunes and disconnect the iPod and try again.
It seems to work on the second attempt but i am beginning to find it rather irritating.
Have you had any luck with possibile solutions?
I have been looking through the post in search of the answer!

  • Macmini ( 2 GB RAM) freezes with Leopard when connecting external monitor

    Hello,
I am having problems with Leopard when connecting an external monitor.
When the macbook is connected to an external monitor, the system freezes and after some minutes, it system reboots. Otherwise only switch off works.
With Tiger there was no problem. Neither with less than 2 GB (1GB or 1,25GB).

  • Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 beachballing and then freezing at random intervals

My computer at work has been beachballing and then freezing at random intervals for the past week or so.
What happens is that all processes stop. The cursor is still responsive for a while, and then the application I'm in, regardless of what it is, “beachballs.”
Occasionally I'm able to wait it out and the computer becomes usable again and other times it just freezes. Then I can't force quit so I have to do a hard power cycle and then start up again. This happens every day, at least 4 times a day.
I've been keeping the system.log open to look for any tell-tale issues and noticed that during every crash I get the following information:
    3 kernel[0] disk)s3: data underrun
    3 kernel[0]
and it repeats until the computer becomes responsive again or I decide to do a hard power cycle.
In addition, I checked the System Profiler diagnostics area and found this:
     Last Run:    11/8/10 1:05 PM
      Result:    Failed
      Failure type:    Memory
      Memory slots:    DIMM6/J43, DIMM7/J44
So…I switched out the offending bars and switched them for 1 GB bars and this problem was solved.
The diagnostics result for the Power On Self-Test:
    Last Run: 11/10/10 6:21 PM
    Result: Passed
However…I'm still experiencing beachballing and freezing problems with the same severity and frequency.
    Help!

So, to clarify: do you suggest I use Disk Utility first to see if any problems are uncovered? Or should I use TechTool Deluxe instead and test the RAM with Memtest?
My two cents would be use Disk Utility first. If you don't have the install disk handy, you can do the same thing with single-user mode. See this link for details: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
You have to run it from single user mode (start with command-S keys held down until you get a Unix terminal screen.
You can also run memtest from single-user mode, though I do not remember the command syntax offhand. Looking at an AppleJack log, though, I see the following command line entry that was used to run memtest on a three-pass check
    */usr/local/sbin/memtest all 3 -L*
Running memtest from single-user mode tests more of the RAM because little is occupied by the BSD kernel.
A snip of the terminal output running memtest:
    Test sequence 1 of 3:
    Stuck Address : ok
    Random Value : ok
    Compare XOR : ok
    Compare SUB : ok
    Compare MUL : ok
    Compare DIV : ok
    Compare OR : ok
    Compare AND : ok
    Sequential Increment: ok
    Solid Bits : ok
    Block Sequential : ok
    Checkerboard : ok
    Bit Spread : ok
    Bit Flip : ok
    Walking Ones : ok
    Walking Zeroes : ok
Somewhat thorough, though no test is completely bulletproof.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition will not work with leopard

When I installed a new ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition, 256MB; my Dual 2 GHz G5 (June 2004) will not allow me to drive my Apple Cinema Display while running under leopard, (neither 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 with Leopard Graphics Update).
The mac starts up as usual and gets to the white screen with Apple logo -then the progress ring eventually stalls. The mouse pointer becomes visible and can be moved freely around this screen.
I can connect from other macs on the network and navigate files, but screen sharing results in an all black window.
The Radeon 9600 works fine if I start up the mac with the Tiger installation disk.
I have tried every suggestion that I could find on these boards and elsewhere: zapped the pram, reset the SMU, installed older ATI Drivers, etc...
Of course the G5 is far out of warranty. I've been running Leopard since the day it shipped - so that's out of warranty now, and there is little help to be found on the ATI/AMD website. I'm afraid I'll have to return the card before Apple releases another graphics update.
The stock graphics card that came with this mac is the nVIDIA 64MB GeForce FX 5200 - but it's having trouble keeping up with Leopard's demands - my isight barely works, most special effects in iChat and PhotoBooth are unusable, and of course I'm not given the option to use a transparent menu bar,
I am really good at swapping video cards in the G5 now - but I'm so frustrated.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?

  • Clean Install G4 Dual 1 GHz-Not enough Disk Space Error? -SLOW USB copies

    HELP puhleeeeze!
This seems to be an issue on various sites with no one being able to figure out what is the cause and a solution. One person stated his problem went away with a fullwipe and clean-reinstall of everything. But this is what I did already.
What is the reason for the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message when both my hard drives have gigs of space available. If I had hair I'd be pulling it out by now!   When trying to copy a file to my 2 internal hard drives that have a lot of space available, but only by the USB port?!!
I have a Power Mac G4 Mirrored Door (MDD) Dual 1 GHz with a clean install of 10.5.8 from the Original Mac OS X Leopard DVD. Both internal hard drives are 60GB and 100GB. The hard drives were wiped clean with Disc Utilities and reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The Power Mac only has the OS and a few music apps installed. Easily over 30 GB of space left on the the main G4 interal hard drive and about 75 GB on the other internal hard drive.
The error seems to only happen when I connect a USB flash drive to the USB port. I tried to copy a 50MB update to the desktop-"Not Enough Disk Space" error message happened.
I know that the G4 MDD Power Macs only have USB 1.0. Is this a USB 2.0 issue? Another issue is that it has very slow USB speed (dramtically slower than normal USB 1.0 copying of files. And this is only when it is successful. Is it a USB format issue? I know I couldn't get an external USB 2.0 drive to mount on the Power Mac at all. Disc Utilities could see it but it still would not mount. I have a friend who has an older G4 single processor Mac that doesn't experience these issues with its USB 1.0 ports.
    Now here's the kicker:
If I put in a CD disc in the DVD/RW drive, it copies with no problems to either hard drive. If I connect to the Power Mac  via the ethernet network, files can copy with no problems. But any USB connection -  I get a the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message. I know this is an old mac... but it's never been problematic until this latest wipe and update to Leopard 10.5.8.
Is there a solution to this? Any and all help, feedback, comments, thoughts are greatly appreciated in advance!!!

    Hello everyone,
Ok, I did the ultimate task. I erased the hard drives, AGAIN. Just to start fresh from scratch. Hard drives were erased. Did a new install of Mac OS 10.5. And all was well. I could copy with no problems. I gave the computer to my friend and all was good for a couple of days and then the issue came back again. He couldn't copy anything to his internal hard drives and we received the "Not enough disk space" error message! I was baffled. A complete hard drive erase 2 times, 2 fresh Mac OS 10.5 installs and it works for a few days and then coping to HD we got the same **** problem again! THEN - I remembered that the PRAM battery was dead on this G4 Mirrored-Door Dual 1GHz PowerMac. I had recommended that he get a new battery, because this computer would always have the incorrect date and time after every restart. So with recalling this, I had him reset the PRAM by holding down the CMD+OPT+P+R keys after a restart (start-up Chime). I had him hold the keys for at least 3 start-up-chimes. Soon as the G4 Power Mac started up everything was fine again. He was able to copy files to his hard drives again with the "Not enough disk space" error message.
So everyone! Try zapping your PRAM (resetting the PRAM) and see if this solves your problem. I told my friend to get a new PRAM battery to replace the old one that is completely dead. I have not heard back from him.  I will ask him again if the problem has come back.
If that fails: My only other solution would be to consider that it is possible that Mac OS 10.5 has a conflict or issue with the G4 Processors and maybe it is safer to install Mac OS 10.3 or 10.4. Because this problem only has occured after installing Mac OS 10.5, the highest version of the Mac OS the Dual 1GHz Mirrored-Door G4 can be installed.
    Cheers,
    B

    "2163 AVS::DestroyAVCDeviceController(AVS::AVCDeviceController*)"
leads to some other components :
AVC.plugin that is a core media IO service and IOFireWireAVC.kext that handles I/O for Firewire
So I ran the test : stop my external drives connected to the FW Sonnet card, and there it was ! no more task in red... I know many of my friends had same issues with same G5 (2, 2.2 ,2.7) and especially, using video apps like final cut with FW cameras and external drives. I suspect de dual kext to be a part of the problem here, because on other Macs, nothing happens like this.
Can I hope for some help or can we expect driver update to get started at work with Leopard soon ?
    Thx for answers

    Hi all
Since I've updated to Leopard, I've encountered the same problem - without Sonnet Card - using FW800 port with a hard disk and ADVC100 in a FW400 port.

Perhaps an Apple update could be needed.
I'll try your solution - but loose the use of my 500Gb HD is difficult
