G5 dual 2GHz wont see external 4Tb

Can anyone confirm how to get G5 dual 2GHz to recognise an external larger than 2Tb. Was thinking of Sonnet range - Tempo SATA E2P card?
Thanks

Yes, it will recognise externals apart from anything over 2Tb capacity.
Thanks

  • Powermac G4 1.2ghz wont see hd

    Hello
I am using a G4 1.2ghz at work. I started it up as usual and get the flashing folder icon. I cant get it to see the HD, have tried resetting the PRAM, PMU switch, to no avail.
It has the standard apple 120gig hd installed. Tried starting up from an OS9 cd, and still even in the disk utility will not see the HD, so I cant even install a new system or run a repair programme to fix it.
    Any help appreciated.
    Mick

Have you been inside the machine lately?
Try reseating all the cables, and verify none have been pinched or cut in the hinge.
Can you tell if the drive is spinning up? Check the power connector. In another thread, a user reported his drive issue was caused by a bad power connector. Might want to try using a different one.
    Have you added another drive?
If so, verify the jumpers are set correctly

  • Distortion with dual 2ghz optical input using external instr

I am using the external instr. feature in logic to input a synth via the optical in on my G5 dual 2ghz. I get really distored recording from this. is this a known problem? i think i read somewhere that the optical ports on the G5 have problems with distortion.

no in principle there should be no problem. i use the optical i/o on a G5 dual 2 gig all the time, distortion has never happened. it's more likely that there's a problem with sample rates or sample sync going on.. how exactly are you connected? directly from the synth? if so, what kind of digital output does it generate? also check in audio midi setup that your sample rate matches up with what the synth is outputing.

G5 dual 2ghz.  Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard.  Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue.  What's happening?

I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
    Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.
    They aren't Lithium-ion batteries

  • Dual 2GHz G5 Firewire failure

So, last night I get home and try to boot up my external HD only to have it not show up in the OS. After about 30 panick-ridden minutes of cable and port swapping, I have come to the conclusion that the Firewire 400 has completely failed. Neither the main port on the back of the computer or the one on the front are working (consequently, the Firewire on the back of my 20" monitor isn't working either since its plugged into the main Firewire port). I am not sure about the Firewire 800 port (As I don't have any FW800 devices) but the USB DOES work.
I assume this isn't something I can fix personally since the glossy "Gates of G5" are concealing that portion of the computer? Does anyone know how much this repair is going to cost me?
Thanks for your time and help!

You could try a firewire reset
    "Mike Mihalik, LaCie
Seems like the FireWire issue needs to be revisited quite often. Here is my often repeated suggestion which appears to clear up many FireWire issues: reset the FireWire ports. Panther has a Finder Preference to show mounted volumes on the Desktop. You must set this for mounted drives to be visible. Please follow these instructions to reset your FireWire port.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
    Here is a summary:
    * shut down and disconnect all external drives and peripherals ; make sure nothing is connected to the FireWire ports
    * use Apple Disk Utility to repair permissions on your internal boot drive
    * shut down and disconnect the AC power from the computer as well as the drives; if laptop, also remove battery
    * let sit unpowered and unconnected for 15 minutes
    * reconnect AC power to only the computer (battery too if laptop)
    * restart computer
    * verify that FireWire ports are visible within Apple System Profiler
    * reconnect FireWire drive (only one); refresh window within Apple System Profiler to rescan the FireWire bus; confirm that drive is visible
    * confirm drive is OK by using Apple Disk Utility and apply First Aid
    * repeat for other drives, one at a time "
    Hope it helps.

  • Is the new iMac faster than my PowerMac G5 dual 2Ghz?

I have a PowerMac G5, Dual 2Ghz (first generation model)
2.5GB Ram, and a ATI 9800 Pro 256mb Graphics Card.
Looking at the SPEC ratings on the Apple page, the new iMac (2.0Ghz model) scored...
    SPECint_rate2000 = 32.6
    SPECfp_rate2000 = 27.1
And according to http://www.apple.com/lae/g5/ the dual 2Ghz scored...
    SPECint_rate2000 = 15.7
    SPECfp_rate2000 = 17.2
Doesn't this mean is roughly twice as fast? Does SPEC just measure the processor or the whole system?
And how does my ATI Radoen 9800 Pro 256MB compare to the ATI Radeon X1600 256MB?
    Thanks!

I agree. Specs are great and certainly are helpful in comparing the new MacBook to the new iMac as they are quite similar. What's really interesting is how PowerPC coded apps will compare to their universal binary equivalents on the new machines. I for one am curious to see how the universal binary of FCP Studio runs on the new iMac vs today's PowerMac. While people have been using FCP tools on G5 iMacs and G4 PowerBooks, performance isn't nearly as good as the same app on a Dual or Quad G5 PowerMac. It could usher in a whole new segment of Pro tools users who can get good performance from a less expensive option like the new iMac.

  • Intermittent boot up problemsI have a G5 Dual 2GHz machine

I have a G5 Dual 2GHz machine with 2Gb RAM. I have had an intermittent bootup problem every since installing Tiger.
The machine appears to start as normal, gets as far as the spinning cog wheel then just shuts itself down as if there was a power cut.
This happens every time I install an update and when I tryed to start up in verbose mode to try and work out why I can't see the message quick enough before it shuts down.
It will however boot up in safe mode and sometimes this fixes it if I then start up normally.
Other times I have to just leave it for about a half to one hour and it eventually boots up.
This problem is now happening more frequently not just after updates and can take several attempts to get it to boot properly.
If I run fsck in single user mode it reports that the file system is ok. If I run hard disk checks this also says everything is ok. I haven't as yet reinstalled a clean system.
Does anybody have any ideas? Is this hardware or software? Any suggestions appreciated.

    Hi there,
Thanks for all your tips which I have tryed but it doesn't seem to make much difference. In fact the machine wil l now on ly boot in safeboot mode.
The Apple hardware test reported no faults. Disk utility verified that the hard disk was ok and I repaired permissions. I ran Tiger cacche leaner and said yes to all options. I also followed Al's suggestions and used font doctor to check out the fonts. It found three corrupted which I removed but this also did not make any difference.
I looked in the system log and found the following :
I don't know if they means anything to anybody:

The only thing I can think to do is reinstall a clean system flolder unless anyone can suggest anything else.

  • Lion Stopped Seeing External Drives

I've been running Lion on a 2.8 GHz, i7 13" MBP I bought new in January.  When I got it, I partitioned the 750 GB hard drive into two drives so that I could create a second bootable Admin partition from which I could run repair and diagnostic software on my Main drive.  (I run my computer pretty hard.  Even sleep with it next to me. But that's another story....)  Both partitions are running the latest version of Lion with all updates.  I tend to mess very little with Terminal tweaks.  And all of my software is either from a) A very well-known dev company, b) the Mac App store, or c) Rated very high with lots of reviews on MacUpdate.  I run Virus Barrier, LittleSnitch, DriveGenius / Drive Pulse to help ensure everything is running fine. I have 50+GB of free space on my Main partition.
Yesterday, I was transferring data from one external 4TB G-Technologies RAID drive to another identical drive — daisy chaned over firewire 800.  After copying the first 2TB, I kept getting Finder crashes after every few hundred GBs were transferred.  Had to reboot after each crash because relaunching the finder would shut it down, but not bring it back up.  Finally, after one of the crashes, the Main Lion partition I was working from stopped recognizing the external hard drives, except for in Disk Utility.
I booted to the Admin partition.  That partition recognized the drives just fine.  I ran every diagnostic possible on the Main partition.  It checked out completely fine.  Booted back to the Main partition.  Still no ability to recognize the drives.  Ran Lion recovery on the Main drive.  Then ran all the re-needed software updates.  Still no ability to recognize external drives. I haven't attempted to repair the external drives, since they are fully readable from the other partition.
Any ideas what might be going on?  My next step is to copy the contents of my Main partition to an External drive from the Admin partition and then wipe and do a clean install of Lion on the Main partition.  I'd much prefer to just be able to do a clean install of Lion without wiping my drive or data — the way we used to be able to do reinstalls back in the day.  But I don't have that option from the cloud installation and I can't find any articles to see if that option would be available if I were to create a bootable USB of lion.  I'd like to not spend the money on a Lion download if it won't be able to do this kind of system reinstall for me.  If it can, I'm thinking my problem will be solved....
Has anyone tried this kind of reinstall from a bootable Lion USB?  Does it work?  Help....

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Versus original G5 Dual 2GHz

I was online searching through the specs to recommend the new iMac to a friend -- perhaps the 20-inch model -- and it seems this new Mac is nearly everything that my original G5 Dual 2GHz was! Wow!
So now I wonder... what can my "ancient" G5 do that the new iMac cannot do?
(This is just a "shoot the breeze" type of open question -- please don't sweat any bullets trying to hammer down a specific detailed answer, LOL)

David hit the nail on the head. I know that there are many pro-level users that are not bothering to update their Macs until CS3 is released next year. CS2 is not Intel native and will run slower while using Rosetta.
Keep that dinosaur around. My first gen G5 iMac is still a great machine and I do not see getting rid of it any time soon.

  • ITunes 10.6.1.7 wont see iPad 2 or 3gs both 5.1 on Windows 7/64

I just bought an ipad2 and I updated to iTunes 10.6.1.7 before attaching to my pc. Itunes wont see the ipad or now my 3gs that it use to have no issue seeing. My windows vista pc/itunes sees both iphone/ipad fine so it must be this pc or itunes. I also tried different cables and usb ports with no change. I updated the vista pc to the 10.6.1.7 iTunes and it sees both ipad/iphone fine.
Why doesnt my windows 7/64bit pc see anything all of a sudden?
How do I fix this? Do I really have to uninstall/reinstall iTunes? Will I lose all my data and backups?
    Thanks

  • Power Mac G5 (Dual 2Ghz 970MP) running 10.5.8 but crashes trying to install 10.4

Would you be able to help? I just purchased an old Power Mac G5 (late-2005, PowerMac11,2) model A1117 EMC 2023 (Dual 2Ghz, 970MP) that was running OS 10.5.8 but want to install 10.4.6 to run Classic Mode applications under 9.2.1.
    The G5 configuration is:
    1. Boot ROM - 5.2.7f1
    2. 1.5Gb DDR2 SDRAM memory
    3. 80Gb Maxtor SATA
Booting off a Mac OS X Tiger (includes Xcode2) install DVD (2Z691-5305-A) (complete with original documentation) that I bought off eBay, the G5 has kernel crash with the following traces at startup:
After this, I reset it by pressing power button, eject the DVD, and I'm back at 10.5.8. I don't have the original install DVD so have tried to use the full retail 10.4.6 (purportedly) version, but haven't gotten that far to verify which version it is.
    Thoughts?
Thanks for your ideas in advance.

I only have the GeForce 6600LE PCIe card in Slot 1. No AirPort Extreme/Bluetooth card.
I did replace the old PRAM battery (voltage 2.94) with a new CR 2032 and reset the PRAM holding down Command-Option-P-R keys until second boot tone chimed. (A lot of dust in there, but I haven't really cleaned it yet...) After boot, I reset the date / time.
First, I inserted the OS X 10.4 install DVD, double-clicked on the Installer icon and the G5 rebooted loading from the DVD and then, the same kernel crash as shown on the screen shots above.
Second, I inserted the install DVD, rebooted without holding the alt key and the G5 loaded the DVD and crashed as before.
Third, I inserted the install DVD, did nothing to open the Installer, then closed the DVD. Checked Startup Disk and none of the icons (HD, DVD, Network Startup with "?") was highlighted. I rebooted and I held the alt key at bootup and it presented me with four icons: 1) the hard drive (highlighted), 2) the DVD, 3) a clockwise arrow, and 4) an arrow facing to the right. I selected the DVD with the mouse and clicked on the right arrow. Same crash as before.
I pressed on the eject key, rebooted, took out the DVD, and 10.5.8 booted up as normal.
Thoughts? I have my suspicions about the DVD, but that makes no sense as it appears to be an original with documentation (Welcome to Tiger, Installation Guide, , box, etc.
    Thanks.

  • Fire Wire: MBP OS X.4.11 Can't see external devices. PLEASE HELP!

Fire Wire: MBP OS X.4.11 Can't see external devices. PLEASE HELP!
My MBP will not "see" my new MB or my back-up drive—both connected via a firewire 400 (6 pin) cable. Both running Tiger X.4.11
I have used this cable to connect my MBP and a TiBook in the past as well as to back-up onto the LaCie e-drive.
I have run "disk repair" and "permissions" on both machines.
BTW—"permissions" are regularly out of wack on the MBP. But, the disk is OK according to Disk Utilities.
I also cannot put the machine to sleep after logging out. Has a hard time shutting down as well. Sometimes I need to force a re-boot.
Can't run Disk Doctor because I don't have a bootable disk yet. It's coming via snail mail.
The new MB "sees" the e-drive connected with the same cable.
I can't transfer my files to the new MB nor can I back up.
Is it time for a "clean install"? Makes me nervous that I cannot backup before trying anything drastic.
    Can someone please help me?
    Thanks in advance.
    Tek

Put the more recalcitrant computer into Target Drive mode by starting it with the T key down until you see the yellow on blue screen. Then connect it to the other machine by firewire cable while both are already awake.
I hope that you did not do any upgrades while you had external drives connected... that is an automatic problem. Always disconnect from externals and accessories before doing any upgrades. Always back up before doing any upgrades.
Firewire networking is not the same as using a computer in Target Disc mode. In Target disc mode, you are using the internal drive of the Td computer as an external. That should allow you to run disk utility. Do use the proper disc utility version for the OSX version that is on problem drive. ie don't use the Leopard disc utility for the Tiger disc or vice versa.

Now i go home and try to put the pics back on my Powerbook G4. I am running OS 10.4.11 and connecting through firewire....except my computer will no longer see my ipod! Why is this happening? The ipod is working fine on its own. I have reset it...computer still wont see it. Any suggestions?

Model No. MB029LL is an iPod classic. It does not have the chips inside to work with FireWire. It came with a USB docking cable. This is the symbol for FireWire

The symbol should be at the computer end of the docking cable.
If it did really work with FireWire, I have no explanation for how you managed to do it. All I know is that FireWire is not supported with the recent iPods. Therefore, you should get a USB docking cable, if you somehow do not have the one that came with that model iPod, and connect using USB. Hopefully, your PowerBook G4 is recent enough to have USB 2.0 ports.
