G5 dual......Came with panther.

I have a G5 power mac...Had a problem with it & had to re-install from the disks supplied, I've never had to do that before then! Now I was sure I had Garageband (Just never used it) but its not on the install or restore discs? Also I'm sure I had idvd, but I can't see that either - Did the G5 ever come with ilife programs before the tiger version?....Can anybody help or give some insight?

OK. Bit of history - and apologies if this is Grandmother/suck eggs stuff.
When I suggested 'Pacifist' in the original post, I was running 10.4.5 and, although I found it didn't work on my install disc 2, I assumed this was because the Pacifist site states that it is only tested to 10.3
However, later I booted from a 10.3.9 volume (that happened to be lying around) and found that Pacifist didn't read disc 2 with 10.3.9 either (presumably because the files are not in ".pkg" format). Which was the reason for the second post.
Perhaps if I state exactly what discs I've got, and what's on them, you can modify the procedure to suit the ones you've got.
I have two discs: "Software Install and Restore" 1 of 2 and 2 of 2
1 of 2 has OSX v. 10.3.2 AHT v. 2.3 and DVD v. 1.0 on the label.
2 of 2 has DVD v. 1.0 on the label.
Disc 2 of 2 has various "invisible" items on it which makes it seem, if you open it in Finder, as though there are only 15 pdf files in various languages on it, in spite of 'Get Info' showing that 2.8GB of the disc is used.
[One way round this is to access the files directly with the procedure outlined in my second post above.]
In the folder ".images" on "Software Install and Restore" 2 of 2 I have 3 files:
GBDemoSongs.dmg
iDVD.dmg
GB.dmg
You can check your disc out (in 10.3.9 anyway) by going to Finder - File - Find
Search in - 'Specific places'
Search for items whose -
First list box - 'Visibility'
Second list box - 'invisible items'
In the main Find window - Uncheck your internal/external drive(s) and check the "Restore" DVD
Click 'Search' and you should now see what is on the DVD.
On my DVD ("Restore DVD") I see (amongst others) the three .dmg files.
You should now be able to open the .dmg files as you would in Finder normally.
NB One reason "hidden" files are hidden is that altering them can have dire consequences for the system. However, it would seem that these particular files are "hidden" because they are normally accessed via the other install & restore disc.
Probably best not to touch any other "hidden" files!

Reinstalling iPhoto - came with Panther, disappeared after upgrade to Leopard

iPhoto worked after upgrade from Panther (10.3.X) to Leopard (10.5.8) but later disappeared - I think a disk error occured. My synched backup copy also got wiped. Started all over - zeroed the disks in case I was going to sell it - installed original Panther - iPhoto worked. Re-installed upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8 - now get the error: "You cannot use this version of the application iPhoto.app with this version of Mac OS X."
Any ideas?

10.3 (original disk) installed o.k. on the spare disk, and iPhoto comes up but I can tell by the interface that the one I was using last summer was a newer version. I will see if it will upgrade from Panther with software updates, and then install Leopard after that. Maybe that is the path needed to recover it.

Installing Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger

Anyone help? I want to install Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger installed. I've used my iMac Panther disks to install, but although the iBook goes all through the installation process, it won't start up from Panther.

Thanks for your reply. I suspected this might be the case but still hope there might be a way round it.
I want Panther on the iBook first because I prefer it to Tiger. Tiger has some annoying little features - for example, the fact that if you select a whole load of files and Get Info on them you get a separate window for each file - if you want to hide the extensions you have to tick the box in each separate window. In Panther you get a single window applying to all the files - neat! There are various other silly little things like this.
Second, the versions of Mail in Panther and Tiger are incompatible. If I save an email on the iBook (while away from home, for example) and want to transfer it to one of the mailboxes on my (Panther) iMac, I have to go through the following laborious process:
1. Save the email on the iBook in Raw Message format. Copy it to the iMac (via a mobile hard drive).
2. Create a temporary mailbox folder in Mail on the iMac. Close Mail.
3. Go to Users ... Library/Mail/Mailboxes. Change the extension of the temporary folder from mbox to txt.
4. Open it (it now opens as an ordinary folder).
5. Copy the text of the email into the document called mbox.
6. Close the folder, change its extension back to mbox.
7. Open Mail again, move the email from the temporary folder into the folder where it belongs.
8. Delete the temporary folder.
Ridiculous or what?

Dual Booting with Windows 8 and 7 Pro in a G6 - 2235us Notebook

I have a G6 - 2235us Notebook 64 bit that came with Windows 8.0 installed.
I would like to install Windows 7 Pro and make it dual book with Windows 8.0 with 7 as the default to start.

Yes, you can use the 85 watt adaptor. You cannot use the new adaptors because your computer is not equipped with the proper MagSafe connector. But you can use the older MBP adaptors as well as a 60 watt replacement adaptor. All can be found at Apple's Online Store.

Help - How to install Win XP in dual boot with Win 7 (first installed)?

Hi everybody!
I'm having some difficult in install a win xp in dual boot with win 7 (which came with the G550 notebook).
I modified the D: (Lenovo) partition to a primary partition to install the XP. Also I installed the EasyBCD to manange the boots and both S.O. load fine.
The problem is that Win XP is seeing a partition (the first partition on disk) with 200MB that is hidden for Win 7 ! So this partition takes the C: letter in XP and mess all the configuration once that many programs uses the C: as a default letter.
The disk is divided in (aprox):
200 MB hidden partition (from factory)
160GB with Win 7 installed
40GB with Win XP installed
19GB hidden partition (Recovery - from factory)
Is anyone has some idea who to solve this problem or make install XP from the beginning without problems?

IPhoto 6 - STILL freezing on a Dual G5 with 370 images

What is it with iPhoto?! I've paid for another upgrade after promises of finally sorting out the sluggishness. Yet, with a library of only 370 images, each not bigger than 2MB, I can STILL only scroll through half of the thumbnails before the beachball comes in. I wait. I wait some more. Then I force quit.
Could there be a problem with my images which is causing this? Most of the images were imported from elsewhere on my machine, rather than a camera (can't imagine how this would have any impact on performance).
How is iPhoto supposed to cope with 250,000 images?! I have a Dual 2G with 2.5GB of RAM.

Do you have DiskWarrior? If so I'd boot into it's CD and rebuild the directory files. Then boot into the Single User Mode and run the file system check - fsck as follows:
FSCK - File System Check
To start up in single-user mode
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold both the Command (Apple) and "s" keys on your keyboard. The computer will display a series of text messages, at which time you may release these keys.
When the computer has started up, it will display a command line prompt (#). The computer is now in single-user mode.
How to Run the File System Check from the Command Line
Once you have reached a command line, follow these steps to use fsck:
1. At the prompt, type: fsck -fy (NOTE, there is a space between the k and the “-”)
The fsck utility will go through five "phases" and then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume <name of volume> appears to be OK."
If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:
**** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
IMPORTANT: If this message appears, repeat the "fsck -fy" command until this message no longer appears. It is not unusual for your computer to require several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional errors. Run it until you get two consecutive times with an "OK" result.
3. When fsck reports that no problems were found, type: reboot
4. Press Return.
Also run OnyX to clear all of the user caches and run the Maintenance scripts.
See if that will help.
Since you're using iPhoto for clients may I suggest the following:
Create a new library for each client. That should keep it fairly small and allow you to burn the iPhoto Library folder via the Finder to a single disk, CD or DVD. Then is a client comes back at a later date and wants another book, all you got to do is copy that folder from the disk to your HD, open it with iPhoto and order another book. OR, just create a separate library for each book and save those libraries to CDs, again via the Finder.
Also, before completing the order for a book find and copy the pdf file that iPhoto creates for uploading and printing. You can use this for proofing before completing the order and as a record of the book for future reference. (There's a way you might be able to use that file to order a duplicate book at a later date even with totally different library but that's another thread).

It does have firewire. I am worried that if my internal HD fails, I am going to be SOL. Sooo... If I install just Panther (full retail) on a new internal HD, will i be able to boot from it? How about if it is on an external FW drive? I DO NOT have the original install disks that came with the computer.

My computer came with Lion but no install disks, how can I do a reinstaller DVD ??

This is only part of my problem.
My computer came with Lion but no install disks, I would love to have a disaster recovery DVD just in case, The is the LionDiskMaker script that says it would do it for Lion and Mountain Lion but when I tried, It did not find what it needed to create such a DVD.
On the other hand, when I replace my MacBookPro last october, the lady at the Apple Store online used my gmail adress instead of my videotron.ca adress... So now, I have a dual identity, one that owns a MacBookPro and the other that has done business with Apple for ages.
So :
1. Can I unify my 2 Apple ID ??
2. Can I get a kind of installer of Lion without paying the price ??

You need to download and save the Lion and/or Mountain Lion installer app.
Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
Unfortunately, the link for getting specific hardware versions has disappeared. So basically:
Get yourself a spare hard drive freshly erased or with a freshly erased partition of around 8 GBs or more.
Boot to your Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion from the main menu.
From the beginning screen select your spare partition/drive as the target destination then begin the download.
At the end of the download you will observe an Install button for you to click. Now this is important - as soon as that gadget appears you must abort the installation process. There are only two reliable ways to do this quickly: a. yank the cable for the drive from the computer; b. pull the power on the computer - shut it down quickly.
This will result in your finding a folder on the drive that contains InstallESD.dmg that you can now use to create a bootable USB flash drive installer based on the special build for your model. Use it until the next public release of Lion appears or you move on to Mountain Lion.
If you do not stop the download process immediately upon its completion you will end up with an installer that always boots to a non-functioning installation progress window instead of the normal main menu.

GE70 dual booting with linux

Has anyone installed linux as a dual booting OS on their MSI laptop? I've gone through a lot of stuff online to try and install, but the UEFI isn't recognizing anything I have as far as live booting dvd or usb. I've turned off secure boot and fast boot. I can get it to boot off the disk/usb in Legacy mode, but if I install from there it installs as MBR which can cause problems. If anyone's had success, please, let me know.

If the laptop came with Win 8 pre installed then bios is set to UEFI, a new measure made by Microsoft to ensure nobody tries to boot other system rather than windows. The only way to boot a linux is to change bios to Legacy and then try to boot, after that, to boot windows you have to change that setting again, so not very efficient really.
My advice is to reinstall windows but in Legacy mode, there is software on the internet to check your windows key and reinstall.
All in all, while you have Windows in UEFI mode forget about dual booting, reinstall windows on Legacy or just erase it and go for linux.

Although your posted system info shows PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5Ghz, you are posting in MacBook Pro Discussions, so I assume you are asking about that Mac.
can you use the isight vision cam with bootcamp?
If you mean your MacBook Pro's built-in iSight camera and the Boot Camp version that comes with Mac OS X Leopard, you can. See Boot Camp Help for more info.

The Boot Camp beta has expired, so you cannot download drivers from Apple.com. Use the iSight drivers from the Boot Camp that came with your OS X Leopard.

Software coupons that came with emac- what do they do?

When i bought my emac in january of this year i found that included were Apple software proof of purchase coupons for iLife '04 and Panther.
Someone please tell me what these coupons do!

These coupons were intended for use in future special offers; for example, if you've purchased Tiger on DVD and don't have a DVD drive, you can exchange it for the CD version with one of the coupons that came with the Tiger DVD package. Currently, there aren't any special offers for those coupons.

Dual Boot with OS X

Not quite sure where this should be posted, so I figured I'd post here. I came upon a rather large hard drive and I was thinking about dual booting with OS X. I meet the system requirements, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to integrate. I did some searching on the forums here, and on google, but I wasn't able to find much. I guess my main questions are:
1) Can GRUB load OS X from an external USB hard drive?
2) Is it possible to mount ext3 partitions from OS X?
3) Is there any common pitfalls I should be aware of before starting this?
Any help I can be given would be greatly appreciated!

1: Probably. OSX refusing to boot from the drive without grub even being considered is more likely than grub not doing its job. It wouldn't boot on my sata, for instance, but doing it from an internal ide worked fine [including Grub2], and I've seen examples of it working on legacy grub.

3: Not really, assuming you're using a real mac instead of a "hackintosh", but that doesn't seem to be so from your post [I would expect someone to say it the other way around, "I want want to dual boot -Arch-", if theyre using a mac machine]. I'm not sure what kinds of things about this topic would be shaky ground on the forums, so I'll try to keep from saying anything troublesome.. I will remove it if necessary, but I don't expect that to be the case. If you're using a "hackintosh", expect hardware problems (it can be a serious hassle and hack-job installing and getting everything to work) and highly probable legal issues (even if you own OSX). On a side note, I personally think OSX is the most boring, user-limiting OS in existence.. However, on the positive side, it pretty much does what it says it does if you're using the real deal, and does it well.

Let's narrow down your choices.
The Radeon 2600 and the 3870 are Mac Pro cards. They won't work in the G5.
Forget the X1300 as well.
The Radeon X1900 is a possible candidate, but it must be the G5 Edition X1900 GT. The one that you linked is for Intel macs (Mac Pro).
In fact, all cards that you linked are not candidates for the G5.

Should I restore with original install disks or with Panther disks?

Okay, I recently received a new Macbook Pro 2.0Ghz 15", and I am handing off my old Powerbook 867Mhz 12" to my father. It is a Revision A machine, and came with a copy of Jaguar on it (which means that 10.2 will be on the original install disks as well).
What I am doing with it is doing a clean install with the intention of giving my father a completely clean hard drive with 10.3.9 on it (I purchased Panther when it came out).
Is it best to first do a clean intsall with the Powerbook's own disks, putting 10.2 back on the machine, and then installing Panther overtop of that, or would I be better off using the Panther install disks to do this clean install?

Unfortunately, a new problem arose of course. My CD case of important CDs has two iMac install disk sets, but no Powerbook set to be found. So I tried just using My panther "Upgrade Disk," but the problem is the computer is already running an OS later than what is on the CD, so it says it cannot install itself on the Powerbook Hard Drive.
What am I to do about this problem? I thought about partitioning the hard drive to give it a clean half to install to, but I can only imagine that consolidating those two later will only make things more difficult on myself.
