G5 dual CPU temps?

My 2 processors run at very different temperatures- 20-30 degrees (F) difference. One runs up near 180, the other around 150. Do I have a problem?

Hello wgazecki, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 forum!

I use speedfan... but for Core 2 Duo, I don't think I have to worry about the CPU temp anymore... they are really coooooooooooooll
Does anybody have an idea what the optimal temperature range for core duo cpu:s are? I used to have an Athlon XP, which was typically 65 °, now the my E6600 is running at 35-40 ° [celsius]. But where's the critical temperature where it burns?

• How to reduce from 5º to 8ºC CPU Temp on your MSI K7N2 Delta!

I've installed this tweak last week and it is working very stable since then. It decreased my Idle CPU Temp from 42º to 36º and Overload from 54º to 48º:
Just go: http://forums.pcper.com/showindex.php?t=280137
AMD ATHLON XP 2600+ 12.5x333mhz 1.65V ~OC 11.5x400mhz 1.55V
Thermaltake Volcano 9
MSI K7N2 Delta L
MSI GF4 4200-8X graphics Card
160GB Maxtor HDD 7200rpm
768MB Samsung DDR3200
LG 48x24x48x/16x CDROM/DVD Reader
Dual Fan 450W Troni Power Suppy

It seems that the link to the tweak is broken, I've found another one:
http://ftp://ftp.vector.co.jp/pack/win95/hardware/other/wpcre14.exe
This is what the article say:
Just tried it for the first time..It works GREAT
My idle temps are now 26c, down from 34c. That's 8C. I can have Winamp, IE and messenger running and CPU temps don't get by 29c.  Once i fire up, SETI though...I get back my regular Load temps at 39c.
Some of you probably know about it, already....here's for thousand others that don't.
This tweak can drop your idle CPU temps down as much as 8c, maybe more...depending on your system.
First thing you need to do is download WPCRSET & WPCREDIT.
They're both in this zip.
- Extract to a directory.
- Run "INSTDD.EXE". Click Install. When done, you will be prompted for restart. Hit Yes! -
- Then go back to the folder with extracted files, and open "WPCREDIT.EXE"
- A ms-dos like window will pop-up. Move the blinking block (with arrow keys or your mouse pointer) until it says Offset 6F at the buttom. Now, click on the two digit number where it says "HEX", and change it to 1F (The Hex for Offset 6F would have previously been 9F, 8F or something else). Hit Set.
Your idle temps should now start falling.
You would have to do this hack/tweak everytime you rebooted your computer if it wasn't for WPCRSET.
- Go to directory and run "WPCRSET.EXE"
- Look at the top of the window: Enable select "Start" and make sure Device is on "enable"
- Then click Add. Enter 6F for the register, and 1F for the data
- Click Ok and you'll be prompted to restart.
Once, you rebooted, open WCREDIT again and see if the 6F register is still on 1F. If it is, then that's it..You're all done.
Here's a Screenie of how it should be:
This only brings your idle temps down, and not your full load temps
It should work for all nforce2s, and use at your own risk
Check your nf7-s for CPU Disconnect. Most other nforce2 motherboards do not have this feature in the bios...so this tweak might prove useful.
READ THE WHOLE THREAD BEFORE TRYING THIS!
If you run a Distributed Computing project...then obviously this would be of no use to you

It activates the C1 (and maybe the C2) function Athlon XP CPU's support. Most mainboard brands have this feature as an option in the bios you can enable and disable. I just found out that EPoX doesn't have that feature. So what you're doing is just using a direct reg tweak to activate it. It's not like you're forcing anything, the Athlon XP chips are made to support this feature so it shouldn't do any damage.
When the CPU is idle the mainboard will send a command to the CPU that will cause a part of the CPU to be deactivated (and therefore not produce any heat). That's why this tweak only works on the idle temp and doesn't change anything on the load temp. Ofcourse as soon as the CPU power is needed the deactivated part will become active again, so it should have any influence on the performance of the CPU.
Strangely, my full load temp has decreased 6º C degrees too.

• CPU Temp spike to 120c for no apparent reason. Help!

Hi,
I've got a 2.5 dual G5 4gb ram and yesterday I noticed the fans were running constantly for about 5 min. I had Photoshop and Illustrator running so I didn't think much of it (cpus were running at about 60% in activity monitor). Next thing I know I get a black screen that went away after I moved my mouse (It did this twice). I quickly shut down the programs and all was well. I did a bit of research and figured out that this is due to the cpu's overheating and it's putting the system into sleep mode. It's never done this before, and I work on these programs daily.
Well, I decided to download a temperature monitor today so I could keep an eye on what the temps are. I was listening to a podcast a that was approx. 30 min long (no other software running but Firefox, activity monitor, and the ). CPU temps were ok (around 65-80c), but suddenly the fans started screaming and the screen went black. When I got it to come on (only got it to come on for a few secs) I noticed the temps on both cpu's were running at over 120c. I shut down Safari and every program I could think of, but the temp remained high. I was afraid of frying my cpus' so I shut it down via the apple menu. The monitor went black, but the fans continued screaming so I held down the power button.
Now when I try to start it up I get the normal ding, but a black screen. When I look through the mesh on the front I see two red lights (I'm guessing where the cpus are). Please help me determine what the cause of this is! I'm a designer and this is my only source of income. Thanks in advance!!!!

Well, I've taken it in to my local Mac repair shop. I'm wondering if the coolant is coming from my power supply (which is under warranty and was replaced 2 months ago), or if it's a separate component. I know this is a known issue with the liquid cooled G5s, and I hope that whatever is wrong will be fixed!!
When I was carrying it out to my car to transport today the coolant leaked all over my floor. I had both my dogs indoors and I didn't notice the trail of liquid till I got back (almost an hour later). I really hope neither of them licked up any of it! Between this and the potential fire hazard I'm almost starting to question on whether or not I even want it fixed. I'm literally afraid of my computer..lol.
I should be hearing back from the repair shop tomorrow. Fingers crossed this leak didn't fry my cpus and logic board. At temps like that I don't see how it couldn't!
Thanks to all of you for your help!

• T510 datasheet CPU temp and temperature in general

Hi all
I have a T510 4313CTO and I love it.
I sometimes run programs that are very CPU intensive i.e Max's the CPU and sure enough the fan kicks in to keep it cool.  However I notice that the CPU Temp reached 80 degrees, when it had been running at 100% CPU for 30 mins or so.
I am looking for a datasheet or similar regarding the temperature of the CPU and other parts (if they have temperature sensors)
I don't have any problem - just looking for data
Regards
J
Solved!
Go to Solution.

given that you have the i7 dual core and the nvidia GPU then the temperature you experienced is quite normal for a cpu running 100% load for 30 minutes.

• CPU temp with Zalman9700 and MSI P965 Platinum ?

Hi.
its funny. My old Asrock DUAL-VSTA showed CPU temp and other temps in programs like HMonitor and Speedfan but this
MSI dosent show anything about CPU in any programs ?
I must say, i was a little confused when i installed the board because there was 2 CPU fan slots, one with 4 pins and one with
3. I have a Zalman CNPS 9700 LED, very nice fan btw. Shoulden this fan be controled by the CPU automaticly ? i do have a
fan regulator in the end of the wire outside the cabinet. I have it on the bag side of the computer case so i can turn it op and
down. But i think i read someware that it could be controled automaticly. Is that right ?
And what about the 3 and 4 pins CPU fan slots on the board. Right now i cant remember in witch of the 3 or 4 slot i installed
the fan in to. But anybody know witch slot is the right one for my CPU fan ?

Listen. Forgot to say.
I'm still a little little bit concerned about 40c-41c idle. but but.
Relax, it's quite alright...
Quote
But what i was trying to say is. I have 3 running SATA drives also and only the stock (Normal) 120 fan that came with the Antec case.
1 fan, the Zalman 9700LED and the PSU fan ofcause. and then OC at 300FSB. Could that be why i'm at 40c idle ?
All the drives + only 1 fan in the case ? i mean. I'm not shure the standard 120 fan that came with the Antec case is good enough.
Any sugestions ?
My case has three 120mm case fan in addition to the 120mm power supply and the Zalman fan, five of them altogether. The Antec P180 case has separate compartment for the hard drives and the power supply, which made a big difference from the temperature's perspective. The box also has four hard drives and I do not OC; I did try, but I didn't see much of a difference and shut it off.

btw. what is a good stress test apps to test my cpu temp with on max load ?
The Orthos Stress Prime is pretty good and so is Intel's TAT; the link I've posted earlier has more information.

• MBP cpu temps and fanspeed help

So I have a MBP intle core i5 2.5GHz with 4 GB of ram, I thinkits either a 2008 model or 2010, I bought it new in 2010.
It has always gotten pretty hot, but thats what MBPs are supposed to do, I get it, but lately I have been testing temps and RPM with istat pro and rmcfancontrol and I think there may be a problem.
my temps all seem fine exceptmy CPU temp, which is regularly above 70 degrees. when doing semi extensive things like watching videos, streaming netflix or menial photoshop tasks, it is generally 80-85, with the fans around 3.5k RPM to 5K RPM. If I plug in my new 21 inch monitor (1920x1028 resolution) and play online poker, watch videos, or any design tasks involving adobe programs, ive seen it jump as high as 94 degrees, and im sure RPM atleast 6k, these may both go even higher as I have not tested the max yet.
this is usually when I have say an online poker lobby with tables going, a tracking software db running, skype on and firefox on. one question I have is, will tthere be less strain on the cpu if I drop the resolution of my new monitor? I dont want to drop it past 1600x1000 (not sure of the exact dimensions) because then it is defeating the purpose of why I bought a new larger screen with a high res.
second, I already run a desk sized fan on my MBP while it sits on an elevated pad (0.25 in approx) with 2 build in fans, left and right. The cpu is located just above the ESC button and that is where the heat is obviously centered so i place my cooling efforts as much as I can on that area.
my next question is, with fancontrol, how high can i force the fans to run and for how long while doing these kind of tasks on dual monitors? Can I set the left side fan to run at 5-6k as a default when playing a session of online poker (this is my part time job so its an important question) while leaving the right fan at 2k? or would it be better to keep them balanced? how long can they run at high rpm before it could cause problems? how long can my mbp run at constant temps of 80-95 degrees before it is dangerous for it? like I said it is mostly common for it to be between 75-85 at most times.
and last but not least, could this be a defect that it runs at such high temps? could it be my fans that are just plugged up and need a cleaning or replacing?
all suggestions are welcome, thank you

Of course. A smaller resolution will require less performance to your dedicated graphic card. Note that your Mac has got two graphic cards (an Intel card and a NVIDIA GeForce one), and your computer switches to the dedicated graphic when it requires more graphic performance.

We don't recommend smcFanControl because your Mac knows what's the correct fan speed and because this application modifies the SMC.
It's not good that your fans run at maximum speed for a long time (5000 rpm is too high). Now, the best you can do is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If you have problems with the fan speed, this should solve the problem.

If the SMC reset doesn't work, I suspect two things: the first, that you have a hardware problem, and the second, that there's a process eating CPU and memory when you are using the computer, because those temperatures are not normal. Also, at that fan speed, they may fail

• Vcore and CPU Temp

Hi Guys,
Is it safe to run the CPU Vcore at 1.6V for long term day to day use ? I need this voltage to keep my system stable (i.e. running 2 X Prime 95 for over 24 hrs). On some fourms, I was told it is ok so long as the voltage don't go above 1.65V yet on another fourm, I was told never to exceed 1.58V. Not too sure which one to trust so will just try on this MSI fourm
Has anyone actually measure the CPU temp with an external temperature probe and compare the result with the temp. reading off the mobo (i.e. thru' corecentre, Speedfan etc) ? I'm just wondering how accurate are those temp reported by the MSI mobo ...
My current temp via Speedfan running 2 X P95 (100% load):
CPU: 53C-54C
System Temp: 32C
Room Temp: 24C
NB: 51C
If I switch off my aircon, my CPU temp could shoot up to 57C to 58C at room temp of 28C-29C.
I think the above temp is a bit on the high side (as compared to ASUS board) hence I'm questioning the accuracy of the mobo temp reading...
Here is my rig:
P4 2.4C @ 3.2 GHz
MSI 875P NEO FIS2R
Thermalright SP-94 with 80mm TT SF2 Fan
Corsair 3200LL PRO 512Mb X 2
Ratio 5:4
RAM Timing: 2-3-2-5-8
PNY FX5800
2 X WD 120GB SATA HDD
TDK DVDRW0404N Dual Format Writer
Audigy 2 Sound Card
480W Antec True Power
Thermaltake Xaser III V2000A Alu Casing

Ok, I've taken out the Audigy card, and no, I still need to pump up my Vcore to 1.6V to keep Prime 95 stable.
If Vcore = 1.525V, 2 X P95 fails within the first hour.
If Vcore = 1.5875V, 2 X P95 fails after 13 hrs.
So I guess my mobo is not affected by the Audigy card

Vdimm: 2.7V

I can get very stable overclocks with my 2.4C at much lower VCore and VDimm voltages if I just remove the Audigy card.
I have to keep my VCore at 1.70V with the Audigy installed. My CPU is idle at 32-35 degrees, so I'm not too worried about it dying on me (plus, it's only a cheap 2.4C).
Just to give you an idea, I'm running the following:
2.4C at 3.0 GHz (250 FSB)
MSI 875P-FIS2R (BIOS: 1.8)
1GB Mushkin Level II (5:4, 333MHz @ 2-2-2-6)
SoungBlaster Audigy
DOT: Disabled
MOT: Fast
VCore:  1.70V
VDimm: 1.85V
VAGP:   1.70V
Now, *WITHOUT* the Audigy card, the same system works stable at:
DOT: Disabled
MOT: Ultra-Turbo
VCore:  1.60V (possibly even lower)
VDimm: 1.70V
VAGP:   1.60V
I know it sounds hard to believe, but *Reilly* will definitely back this claim up. Just take the Audigy card out and see what your results are. ALSO, I have read postings in ASUS board forums that PCI slot 3 works much better with the Audigy than any other. Can't confirm that, though.
Post your results!!!!

• High CPU temp on new SR MBPs

I have posted this on other (not apple.com) forums, without many replies. I am hoping that posting it here will reach more SR MBP users.
I load tested a Santa Rosa MBP (stock 2.4 GHz model) at a local Apple store, running 3 quicktime videos and one Final Cut Pro demo video to fully load the CPU (and GPU). Monitored the temp and CPU load with istat. The MBP was on a flat display table and the store was your usual mall room temp.
The CPU ran between 82-91C, averaging about 84C. Really high. The fans stayed at a constant 2000 rpm, if I remember correctly -- I only looked at the fan rpm a couple times.
(1) Has anyone else seen this high a CPU temp on a SR MBP?
(2) Has anyone opened a new MBP up to inspect the thermal paste application?
(3) Would the Apple Store exchange a brand-new MBP for another one, if running at 85C or higher was its only problem?
I am worried about buying a new MBP now, because of heat. Thank you for any replies.
SR MBP 2.4 GHz stock model Mac OS X (10.4.9) in-store

I have an own the latest MBP to hit the market, for a
couple of days I've notice the CPU temp floating
around 59-61°C and this is just idling, doing nothing
other then playing itunes. After spending sometime
working in Photoshop the temp sores to 71-75°C, the
system feels like it's slowing down ><</div>
Using Photoshop with (presumably) one core loaded or sporadic load on both cores, and getting a CPU temp of 71-75C would seem to correspond well to my report of ~84C under full dual core load. Did your fans not go up in rpm as the CPU temp got higher, or the CPU load increased?
It seems that the default fan configuration in SR MBPs, or perhaps the actual application of thermal paste inside (remember that old problem?), leads to systems that run extremely hot. This will shorten the life of the MBP, and it's just plain less comfortable to use!
Not good. Thank you for the reply; hopefully more first-hand reports are coming.

• K9N-Platinum wrong cpu temp + nforce drivers problem

I have a msi k9n-platinum (ms-7250)

When i builded the system , i installed Windows XP + Sp2 , made all windows updates
After i tryed to install the drivers a got wit the cd.
My system was very instable (i had no problem whit the motherboard i had before)
I made the install more than once , but still got instability
So i went to the nvidia site and downloaded the drivers for the chipset from there , and also made a bios update to v 1.2
System went stable.
Tried again after the bios update with the original cd --> not stable , randomless reboot
so i'm now working with the nvidia drivers from the nvidia site , it's stable but when i go to bios i see that the CPU temp is -38°
Is it a fix for this or do i have a wrong mobo ????

-38°C , seen that a few times now .
I think you should RMA/return the motherboard .
Why , see:

Not the same board as yours but all have a faulty calibraded (non workin) sensor on their motherboards .
The positive thing though is that the boards with this issue that runs on AMI bios doesn't freeze/halt as the award based ones does.

• High CPU temp. while playing sounds

Hello!
I have recently installed Archlinux on my Lenovo G560 laptop.
The specs: Core i5 450M (2.4GHz), nvidia GF310M, 4GB RAM, Broadcom BCM4313 WiFi.
This laptop is NOT an Optimus setup, so the on-cpu graphics is disabled and undetectable.
Basically, it works great, cool and quiet, except when playing any sound.
Standard idle temp. for this PC is around 45*C and battery life is about 3hrs (when 80% charged, idling). It is a bit better than on M$ Win7.
When I start playing something (mp3's using mpg123 or audacious2 or JuK) the cpu temp skyrockets to around 55-60*C for no apparent reason.
CPU usage is very low (around 2% for audacious2), and yet it gets hot and drains battery big time. The battery operating time is lower by an hour or so . There is no such problem when running M$ Win7 x64.
This PC has been configured according to the articles in ArchLinux Wiki, so it runs cool, unless it plays mp3. Even playing some movies with sound output nulled won't warm this PC as much as playing music only.
I'm stuck, as I think I configured my PC right, tried most (if not all) tweaks I could find in the Wiki and other pages, but, as you can see, can't get any further with this
Any help will be kindly and greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the replies on helping me out.
With the OC I actually have a Corsair A70 installed doing push pull fan configuration. I was actually talking about the stock speed of the chip when I was doing temperature runs.
For Real Temp I just ran prime95 for about an 20mins and this was the results:
Then in control center the cpu temp was crazy high:
Real Temp shows everything to be fine temp wise I think. Should I just ignore the cpu temp in control center or be cautious and figure out what exactly is going on?

• Mac Pro 2.66 (2006) CPU Temps

It's been a while since I took a look at the my temps and what not using Hardware Monitor but the other day I reached behind my Mac Pro... it seemed to me that it was awfully warm... so it peeked my curiosity...
Today I checked and my CPU temps are all around 135F... as I said, it's been a while since I looked but I seem to remember them being sub-100F at idle...
Am I not remembering correctly?
Thoughts?
Thanks!
-Justin

See if installing SmcFanControl 2.2+ to create profiles and change default fan speed works, changes the fans.
Rather than wait for the system to heat up, switch to a higher rpm profile for that purpose, say 900-1000 rpm is still just barely audible but moves much more air and cooling. 1200-1500 for high.
Once the fans kick in, or cpus are under a work load, it can end up being cooler than it was.
The new 2009s with HT can be forced to use more power, create more heat. For 2006, the big issue is/was the ATI X1900 and clogging with dust and overheating, which needs to be pulled and cleaned every 3 months.

• CPU Temp over 100 C with only iPhoto Open on Late 2011 MBP

Hello All,
Vital Stats: OSX 10.8.2 with 2.5Ghz Core i7 and 4GB DDR3. 7200 RPM standard HDD
What's Happening:
Since Upgrading my Late 2011 model Macbook Pro to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and the latest releas of iPhoto, CPU temps jump to 100 deg Celsius and fan speed maxes out at 6200 RPM when iPhoto is opened.
Reference: Temperature Readings provided by the program Temperature Gauge v3.5.1
Please Note: This Macbook is done Indexing Spotlight since the upgrade and no other resource hogs are running as verified by Activity Monitor
A "PRAM" Reset has already been performed.
This "Overheating" Should not be happening - Yes I know true overheating is when the intel chip shuts off, but Underclocking/High Temps under such a minimal load is not normal to me. Please Help.

I can see that by mistake I miscategorized my question:

Hi Ray-
I'm having the exact same problem and have searched the web for hours looking for a solution (multiple spawned avgcmgr processes that consume cpu).
Did you find any solution?
Thanks so much!

• Can a bubble in thermal paste make CPU temp range 39ºC-60ºC?

Hello.
I've read the postits above and they say 45 ºC idle is very likely the heatsink spreader is not properly seated or the temperature is wrong.
But, what if idle temp is about 39 on the heatsink (meassured with a termometer) and the bios says CPU temp is 39? Does that mean I did well with thermal paste and heatsink? Does that mean the motherboard is reading the righ temperature?
It could look like I am asking a very easy question, but I feel it is not. Just go on reading.
I need to know if BIOS does actually provide the rigth temp because:
When the system heats up due to CPU under heavy load, CPU temp goes up to 50-55 ºC sometimes even close to 60 ºC. Could that mean there is an air bubble within the thermal paste but it is too small to interfere when cold enough (40ºC) but big enough when warm (50ºC) lowering heatsink performance and rising CPU temp up to 60 ºC?
Also sys temp is very high. It never gets below 50 ºC but I do not know where that sys temp is taken, and as I have the NB-fan connector conected to the power supply fan, I do not know what that sys temp means. :(
Room temp is around 25 ºC.
It does boot OS and I can actually play games (heavy load for graphics card and CPU). All readings I take were got from CoreCenter application at stock settings (Vcore 1.42 - FSB 201 - Mem volt 2.5 - AGP volt 1.5).
I am afraid of having done a nice job with thermal paste. I know (just read it here) I could easily fry the CPU if not, and I feel 55-60 ºC is too much, isn't it? Of course if BIOS readings are right.
BTW. Here follow details on the system:
CPU: AMD 64 3000+ NewCastle
CPU Family/Model/Step: 15.12.0
Thermal compound: Artic Silver 5
CPU Heatsink: Thermaltake Silent Boost K
Motherboard: MSI K8N Platinum
Motherboard BIOS: 1.4 (08/26/2004)
Graphics Card: Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 SE AIW (not modded in any way)
Power Supply: Enermax 465 W [EG-465AX-VE(W)FMA]
Case: Lian Li PC-V1000
Mem, hdd, dvd-rw, floppy and D-bracket are present but did not feel necesary to provide details on them.
Thanks

Well, if your heatsink is cold and your CPU temp on BIOS is hot there are two possible reassons:
BIOS 1.4 does not guarantee accurate CPU temp readings
Heatsink is not properly seated on the CPU or thermal paste has bubbles within
But that is not my situation. I do know CPU readings are accurate when it shows 39 ºC because I actually used a termometer in contact with the heatsink to meassure it.
What I am not sure is if that accuracy is so when the CPU is hot (>50ºC) as it is when cold (
