G5 Firmware update necessary? Random problems since Tiger upgrade.

I have a PowerMac G5 (7,2) with a 1.8 GHz PowerPC 970 (2.2) CPU running under boot version 5.1.4f0. I have added memory.
I apparently upgraded from OS 9 to 10.2.8 without running any firmware updates. I quite frankly don't remember. I have since upgraded to Tiger, directly from 10.2.8. (There were OS X versions in between, I'm told. *wry smile*)
I am now having random problems.
The machine won't sleep. Display will but tower won't.
On occasion when I boot it up, I get the blue screen and nothing else; I have to shut it off with the power button and restart.
iPhoto (ancient version) is running agonizingly slowly (better since I did the fix suggested in the iPhoto forum in answer to someone else's question).
A short while ago, (in the last week) I noticed that some of my rules in mail ceased functioning (while others work fine). I deleted and recreated them to no avail. I previously had serious Mail problems that I fixed thanks to Mr. Gost, but those were largely of my own creation, so this latter might be unrelated.
If I'm reading things on the various boards and in Apple's Support forum right, in order to truly fix this I should deal with the firmware, to wit:
1. temporarily remove the memory I added (not factory-installed)
2. somehow (handwave) install OS 9 OR boot up from a OS 9 disk
3. download and install the 5.1.5f2 uniprocessor firmware update that Software Update keeps insisting I need.
4. reinstall the added memory
5. If I've reinstalled OS 9, reinstall 10.2.8 and then reinstall Tiger. (because I can't go directly from 9 to 10.4, right?) Otherwise, a clean install of Tiger might be a good idea.
Is this accurate?
Should this solve my blue screen and non-sleeping issues?
Are those issues indicative of a serious problem, or just annoying?
Is there more than one firmware update I should be using?
Will updating my firmware at this point create more issues than it is worth (as I'm seeing that many people had issues after firmware updates?)
Also, these problems seem to have intensified since the update to 4.10. Can I go back to 4... um... the last update? If so, can you point me to directions?
Sorry to be so verbose. I'm obviously more than a little behind the bell curve on this upgrade. The version of iPhoto I want (6) isn't even sold anymore.

Software updater insists the firmware update I need is 5.1.5f2. The only information I can find on this is on a 2004 page at apple support (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117) that states:
These firmware updates cannot be installed when the computer is started up from Mac OS X. In order to install them, you must start up the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk (not from a CD).
When you click on the technical details it says:
Remove any third part RAM before installing this Firmware Update. After the Firmware Updater has verified that it has been completed correctly, you can re-install your third party RAM.
There are other firmware updates, but they don't appear to address the issues I have been having, and they're not what Software Updater says it needs. Am I missing something obvious here?
I will check the USB devices. Thank you.

  • I chat problem since Leopard upgrade.

I recently upgraded to Leopard, now i chat has an issue. When I click on a buddy, a window opens with my icon and a bubble, however when I type and hit return I see nothing. In addition when my buddy responds I see his/hers icon and bubble briefly then it disappears with no text.

I've been having this same problem since I upgraded to Leopard. Also my buddy list is grey and displays all my contacts online or not. The privacy features also are not accessible and say that I can't change them because I am not logged in, but I am logged in according to the main screen. I am behind a netgear router most of the time and connect wirelessly to an airport express. My provider is Comcast. I have changed the port to 443, tried the fix listed here, tried to fix it using onyx, and I'm sure more. At this point I am using Adium because I can't get iChat to work. I want to use iChat as I really like the new features and it was one of the reasons I upgraded to Leopard in the first place.

  • Latest firmware update and more problems with 30" external displays?

    Hello,
New macbook pro user since a few weeks, so first post here.
I'm aware of various issues with the displayport to dual-dvi adapter, especially with 30" 2560x1600 monitors. All threads I've found on are 1-3 years old though.
I got my 17" macbook pro a few weeks ago and I've had very few problems running my 30" dell 3008wfp as external screen. I had issues at times getting it to work after boot up, with blackout and various errors (problems I've read about in older threads), but once stable it would work without issues for days.
Yesterday the macbook found and installed a new firmware update, and wow, all **** broke lose. The external screen won't run at 2650x1600 for more than a minute before blacking out or suffering major graphical errors. Ironically one of the key points in the firmware update is better support for external monitors...
It will run nice and stable mirrored at 1920x1200, but not at 2650x1600.
Is anyone else in a similar situation after the latest update?

  • Is SMC Firmware Update necessary?

    Hello there
I have the Software Update window popping up telling me to download the SMC Firmware Update. I know that the update adjusts the fan behavior in the MacBook but does anyone know exactly what it does and changes?
My MacBook has been working fine since I got it in July. No weird fan behavior nor RSD nor overheating problems (thankfully! I'm hoping it stays that way). So my question is do I need that update, or is that update only for users with those problems? If I download it, how does it alter my MacBook behavior?
Any advise is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Honestly I was kind of like you. I downloaded the firmware but didn't install it for quite a while. My MacBook as worked fine and I saw no reason to screw that up.
But..... it got the better of me and I went ahead and installed it. I haven't noticed any difference whatsoever. Fan behavior is the same I guess because I've only heard them a couple of time so that's never been an issue. I guess it may run a little cooler but again I don't really pay that much attention to the temperature anyway so I'm not sure.
SMC is System Management Controller which is a micro-controller on the logic board that controls various functions (in this case the fan). I've never found anything specific other than some have said the fans run non-stop. Could be but I've experienced nothing different than before I installed the firmware.

  • Latest firmware update and startup problems

Hi I have been reading all about this so-called firmware and its importance in keeping updated on my new macbook pro. Therefore I have been diligently trying to keep it updated over my dial-up connection. I installed the latest firmware as my automatic update suggested. Now I get the spinning startup circle of death. Tried booting in safe mode to no avail. Help? (I also have version cue installed.)

    Hi jbell,
Firmware updates are not availible in Software Update, only sofware updates are. Did you Repair Permissions prior to and after updating software? You always should. Go to Applications-Utilities-Disk Utility, and highlight Mac OS X in the left hand column, then Repair Permissions below. Firmware updates are available here....

  • Internet kernel panics since Tiger upgrade

Last Friday (9/9) I upgraded my eMac from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.2, and added memory (purchased from Apple), increasing from 256 to 768 MB. Since then I have experienced kernel panics four times while connected to the Internet (Safari) via built-in cable modem (I use dial-up, 56k modem). Anyway, I think it's a kernel panic-- gray screen descends and says I must restart computer using power button; when I restart, message appears saying: "The computer was restarted after MAC OS X quit unexpectedly." On a few other occasions, my modem is disconnecting and I have to dial up again. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on and what I can do to solve the problem?

JMVP: I did update Safari; as far as Java, I was downloading update via my dial-up with 56k modem; with only about 7 minutes remaining (after a nearly two-hour download) the modem disconnected, so I have to start from scratch tomorrow. The install disk for Tiger was for 10.4, then I used Software Update to download 10.4.2 Combo Updater and did permissions repair.
Someone at my office suggested that perhaps the newly-installed memory module is defective; I guess that's a possibility, but my guess is that the odds are small that Apple would ship a defective module (or am I naive?) Guess my first step will be to remove the new module and see if computer runs smoothly. I hope it does; at least I'll know what the problem is. I fear, however, problems will persist and I'll be back to Square 1.
One other thing, I noticed that since Tiger/memory installation, when I put the computer to sleep a small but very bright flash of light is emitted in the center of the screen just as computer enters sleep mode. I'm certain this never used to occur. Wonder what that's all about.

  • IChat refuses "spaces" since Tiger upgrade

Since I upgraded to Tiger, I can iChat with people, but only if I don't include any spaces in the body of the message. Once I hit the space bar, it says "iChat Internal Error!" and a lot other rigamarole.

I am following this series of messages with interest since the same problem has just cropped up in my world as well. My error message reads:
    NSInternalInconsistencyException:
    Invalid parameter not satisfying: (index >= 0) && (index < (_itemArray ?
    CFArrayGetCount((CFArrayRef)_itemArray) : 0))
It's not only spacebar depressions, but many of the other punctuation keys that result in the same error (?, comma, !, period, etc.). The problem is maanifested ONLY in iChat AV. Problem arose about 2 days ago - shortly after Software Update to 10.4.3?? Only got this computer about a month ago.
I'll post this then follow the links to the suggested articles above - just wanted to let Vito know that he is not alone! :o)

  • Problem since OS upgrade

I recently upgraded the OS on my BB curve 8520 to v5.0.0.681.
    Network - Virgin (with dataplan)
Since then i have been unable to utilize apps such as BB Maps and Foursquare.
Maps does not find my current location but everything else works
Foursquare used to  but now cant find my current location.
I know that i dont have GPS only GPRS  but Foursquare used to locate me so why doesnt it now?
Have even had Virgin send me a replacement phone but that made no difference.
    Feeling very frustrated

iphone 4 using audi bluetooth module (q7) worked fine until upgrade to new operating system (5). now works fine on car startup; iphone is paired, address book visible, no issues. but as soon as a call is placed using hands free, or an incoming call is accepted, bluetooth cuts out after five seconds and call reverts to iphone itself. then while using iphone, bluetooth comes back on, cutting out iphone conversation momentarily before coming back on speaker. this happens every time without fail. apple suggests 1) restoring iphone to factory settings, or 2) checking with audi for a firmware update. former option no guarantee of doing much other than losing information; latter option is likely to be a wild goose chase trying to find someone at audi knowledgeable enough about compatibility of their bluetooth module and iphone operating system. far more likely to be a bug in the new iphone operating system. apple, hello?

  • Photoshop CS keeps crashing since Tiger upgrade

Photoshop CS keeps crashing when saving files since we upgraded to 10.4.5 Tiger. Everything was working fine under 10.3.9 Panther. Is that a known issue? Thanks!

Hi, Colorblind. Welcome to the Discussions.
First, for questions concerning Photoshop (PS), PS CS, and PS CS2 you should search the Adobe knowledge based or search/post on the Adobe Photoshop Mac Forum.
    1. How did you upgrade to 10.4.5? Was this an Upgrade Install or an Archive install of 10.4.5 atop 10.3.9?
    2. To where are you saving the files? An AFP server? There is a known issue with PS CS and CS2 under 10.4.6 when saving to AFP servers. See Adobe Knowledgebase document "Photoshop crashes when you save files to a network volume (CS and CS2 on Mac OS X v10.4.6)."
    3. What error messages are you getting when PS CS "crashes," if any?
For example, see the Adobe KB documents "Personalization errors occur when starting Photoshop (CS on Mac OS X)."
    Good luck!

Ahhhhh,  Most tv's have a couple or more,  you may want to try Component cables then,  You can call Verizon or open a live chat, they may send you some for free, or they may point you towards their website www.verizon.com/fiosaccessories
I'd open a live chat and see if I could get them for free personally, but they are also very cheap at www.amazon.com
They are HD cables that support upto 1080p
GEEZ, I can't be the only person having this issue. I will try 1 call to them to see what they say. Thanks for your input.

  • Lost Connections have recently become a problem since I upgraded

My sister and I call each other frequently from the same general location, and recently (since I upgraded) we drop connection seconds after the call starts). I believe there may be a problem with the phone part of the new software. Everything else is working well. I do wish it would work better as a phone. I mean that is what I bought it for.
The problem seems to happen when she calls using her old version of the software, to me running the new version. When I try to call back, it goes right into voicemail.

To be honest these are the solutions that may or may not work.
First thing I would try is rebooting the phone by holding the sleep/wake button and home button for 15 seconds until you see the white apple logo.
If that doesn't work I would restore from backup. If that doesn't work I would restore as new. If all else fails take it to your closest apple store they may replace the phone for a working one..

  • Nothing but problems since recent upgrade to Infin...

    I recently upgraded to BT Infinity. Previously I had a wireless connection throughout the house. Since the upgrade I have had quite a lot of problems. The hub is now in a different room than with the previous BB. I found that;
    1) Wireless not available in a few rooms
    2) Internet connection keeps switching off on laptop + PC
I purchased a booster as advised by BT. This helps at times but then I realized that not all my issues were down to the wireless connection. I realize many different devices can interfere with the connection but prior to Infinity everything was fine. This is the only change in my house. There has been no new electrical devices.
    Now the following happens;
    a) Internet connection keeps going down on various devices - particularly at 11pm at night
    b) At times I cannot even connect with an ethernet cable from hub to laptop
    c) At times speedtest shows poor results
    I've had various ideas suggested by the BT employee who is attached to my case, unfortunately nothing has improved the situation and I am getting extremely frustrated with the problem. The following has been done;
    1) My hub has been replaced
    2) Channels reset
    3) Engineer has tried to remotely fix problem and also replaced some part of copper wire leading into house
BT have recently sent me 2 powerline adaptors to try and set my hub away from the openreach box in the room it was in previously as I had no problems prior to the upgrade. Unfortunatelly BT have been unable to talk me through this and obtain a broadband connection. The BT employee is trying to set it up differently from the conventional way which he said has worked for customers before. I am awaiting the original employee to telephone me back in a few days as he is off work and his colleagues are not sure of the set up.
I am also awaiting yet another Openreach engineer to call in a few days if the problem cannot be resolved.
Initially for the first few weeks it was a complete nightmare contacting BT and having to keep repeating my story and having various employees reset channels and work their way through a set script. However recently a set person seems to have been assigned to this case and has been very dilligently phoning me and trying to resolve the problem. This is the only thing that has kept me sane as I was getting so annoyed by having to phone and take potluck with their general phone number.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone with similar problems or suggestions to resolve this.
    Many thanks.

  • Irregular Browsing Since Tiger Upgrade

    Hello,
My Safari has been behaving real quirky since I upgraded to 10.4.3.
Most occaisons it won't recognize url's when I am google browsing or just going to the Apple site. I have to reenter a url a few times before it will load a site such as Apple's. Also there a occaisions where I will get a blank white screen with simple text that will read "Nothing to See Here" I'll get that message even when at the Apple site. When going to most sites now some images will read and some won't load and leave little question marks "?" in their place.
Simple browsing is really becoming a hassle.
    Any suggestions?
    Many Thanks
    G4 dual 1.25   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Ok, Mitch,
Have you done all of these yet . . .
Do them now, and report back, OK?
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Trash your Icons Folder:
    HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)
    3. You might want to check all three "auto" preferences in Safari. Sometimes those lists gets very long and need pruning. (I turned all autofill boxes off, and have no problems.)
    4. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this for each font with a bullet next to it.
    If you're still having problems:
    5. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.
    Hope this helps
