G5 Freezing and/or Fans going into hyperdrive

One of the machines in my editing lab has suddnely been totally freezing (needing to be rebooted) and also the fans have been kicking in as if it were about to take off. This happens simultaneaously or sometimes independently of each other...a forced reboot is the only thing that helps temporarily. Is this a hardware issue?

Jeremy,
I get the same problem every few months. I just posted to this forum about this. If I get a reply I'll let you know. If you have found a way to resolve or correct this will you let me know?

I pull fiftyfour bytes of data from MicroProcessor's EEPROM using serial port. It works fine. I then send a request for 512 bytes and my "read" goes into loop condition, no bytes are delivered and system is lost

    Hello,
You mention that you send a string to the microprocessor that tells it how many bytes to send. Instead of requesting 512 bytes, try reading 10 times and only requesting about 50 bytes at a time.
If that doesnt help, try directly communicating with your microprocessor through HyperTerminal. If you are not on a Windows system, please let me know. Also, if you are using an NI serial board instead of your computers serial port, let me know.
In Windows XP, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, and select HyperTerminal.
Enter a name for the connection and click OK.
In the next pop-up dialog, choose the COM port you are using to communicate with your device and click OK.
    In the final pop
-up dialog, set the communication settings for communicating with your device.
Type the same commands you sent through LabVIEW and observe if you can receive the first 54 bytes you mention. Also observe if data is returned from your 512 byte request or if HyperTerminal just waits.
If you do not receive the 512 byte request through HyperTerminal, your microprocessor is unable to communicate with your computer at a low level. LabVIEW uses the same Windows DLLs as HyperTerminal for serial communication. Double check the instrument user manual for any additional information that may be necessary to communicate.
Please let me know the results from the above test in HyperTerminal. We can then proceed from there.

  • I just updated 3 addons and now Firefox goes into background mode and I am not able to reach the Tools/Addons to disable any addons.

Firefox stays in foreground for maybe 10 secs before going into background. I can't reach FF to do anything with FF.
I have to use Task Manager to close FF.
I don't remember which 3 addons were updated, but I was notified of updates when I tried to open FF at about midnight this morning.

hi there i tried the removal of the sessionstore.js file and and fired up the mozilla firefox up again and still no joy from the windows xp machine all other browsers work fine, its just hanging still, reading the article from the link you sent i can't any issues that i am getting but i did manage to un-install the FF8 again deleted any folders and dowloaded V3.6.24 from here http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • Its just stops, freezes, and the fans come on.....

This the third time in 2 days. I have been using my Imac for a year with no problems. So I'm not freaking out but like an a** I didnt get apple care. Oh I have a business so I can buy it. Whatever. In cases any fellow mac-ers didn't know if you have a business you can buy apple care after the original warrenty runs out.
    Anyways
My (baby) Imac will just freeze and about 30 seconds go by, and the fans come on like a helicopter. I let it sit for a cople of mins and saw no change. I just turned it off. Has anyone experianced this?

Shifty, could you please post where you got the information that you can buy AppleCare after your warranty runs out? As fas as I know, it can only be purchased before or on, the last day of your original warranty.
As to your fan problem, look and see if your serial number is among those in Apple's Repair Extension Program, if so, your repairs, which probaly will include a new Power Supply Unit and logic board, will be made under the extended warranty.
Please post back with the information,
    thanks,

  • Mouse+Keyboard Freeze and LOUD fan noise...

    Hi,
Seems to be a few similar threads, so here we go...
Just got my iMac G5 20" 1GB Ram (OS 10.4.3) 2 days ago. All went well and suddenly, mouse + keyboard froze. About 10sec later, the fans kick iun, VERY loud. Never stopped for 2 hours.
If I reboot, shutdown and restart, do all the kind of troubleshooting you can read, it always starts again int he grey screen with the Apple and the fans at max revs, VERY nousy.
Eventually it goes away. But about 1 hour later, same story.
I ran the Apple Hardware test and all tests came PASS but there was originally a memory error POST/0/2048 notice. But the 1GB memory test passed...
Had a chat with the Apple Agent support, said this code shows a hardware component failure.
Have to bring back 10KG of EXPENSIVE Apple HW to the store tomorrow.
Great way to spend Xmas indeed
    Any comments or suggestions?
    Thanks,
    JP

    Hey,
When does this happen exactly? On Toshiba screen or Windows startup screen?
Are you running factory settings or another OS?
I think its hard to say why this happens. It could be software or hardware malfunction
Fact is you can test the RAM modules using Memtest86 or another diagnostic tool. You can ask Google to find it, its freeware. Just download an iso image and create a bootable CD/DVD. If you boot from this disk you can start the test.

  • When I open Compose Email Window, anything I type -- in any location -- pops open the Search box at the bottom of the screen and my text goes into that box -- therefore cannot compose or reply to an email.... Any suggestions?

Problem is intermittent.... but most of the time (90%). Occasionally happens right in the middle of successful email start.... get two lines in, and it suddenly switches into the Find box. Have reinstalled and updated Firefox to latest version (3.5.13 as of 9/16/2010) without any change. Have shut down Firefox and restarted without change. Have rebooted entire computer without change.

    Hi,
Just several ideas to be checked:
    1. Please, verify the prerequisites of Operations Console listed by the following link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249696.aspx
    2. Install all the SCOM related system updates.
    3. Clear SCOM Console cache:
    http://systemcenter.no/?p=215
    4. Try to clean up Ops Manager cache on SCOM Management server. To do this stop Microsoft Monitoring Agent service, navigate to SCOM installation path (by default, C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\Operations Manager\Server) and
delete Health Service State folder. Start Microsoft Monitoring Agent service afterwards.
    5. If nothing helps, maybe try to reinstall SCOM Console.

  • I just installed RAM into my 2007 Mid iMac. I went to turn it on and the fan goes on and such. The screen isn't lighting up and (Caps lock) the keyboard isn't working. It's plugged in too.

Installed two 2GB RAM cards to my Mac. Plugged it in, turned it on. You can hear it running. My keyboard isn't lighting up (Caps Lock) and the screen is black.

Assuming the RAM is to the exact spec required, try re-seating the RAM. When you think it is fully seated give it an extra shove with both thumbs - it only needs to be a fraction out for it not to work. If that fails to solve the problem, put the old RAM back in and test. If it works that narrows it down to the new RAM being the problem.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPad is sporadically becoming unresponsive and the screen is turning black. In this situation, I would recommend reading over and working through the suggested steps in the attached article.

  • Fan going into full blast for no reason

the fan in my macbook has been going to 6000 rpm for no reason. like when im not doing anything, suddenly i hear the fans start spinning. usually, at 2500(min speed for my mb) rpm, it is barely audible. then suddenly i hear this low hum, and i look at the smcfancontrol, and notice that my fan's at 6100rpm. any idea why? is this normal? oh, and i usually have my itunes on most of the time.

Yes, do check Activity Monitor (just type activity in Spotlight). Click on the CPU column and the most demanding application (the one that's sucking up your CPU cycles) will show up at the top of the list.
For me when this happened (twice so far in a week or so) has been Airport. So just disable or force quit the offending application. For me I just turned the Airport off, waited about 15 seconds and turned it back on and all was well.
    Good luck

  • HP pavillion Elite HPE-541F ... system will not start and monitor keeps going into sleep mode

    Good Morning:
Having an issue with my Hp Pavilion Elite HPE-541F and Monitor HP2311x
Yesterday, thinking I was updating Java ... clicked on it and agreed to things being allowed on computer ... started adding icons to my desktop .... then pop ups kept coming up to register etc ... I assumed that something was wrong so I attempted to restore system to previous ... since then my system will not boot up ... will say "starting windows" and I can hear the fans working but thats it ... second part of the issue is that the monitor keeps going to sleep, so even if I try to restart the computer in "safe" mode or anything else monitor goes to sleep and there's nothing on the screen so don't know if anything is doing anything .... Very sorry I'm also not very tech savy with computers ... just trying to save time and money before I have to bring system to computer repair person .... Any help would be appreciated .... Thanks so very much

I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure, I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums, since this is a commercial product. You can do this at

  • MacBook (1st Gen) Freezes and Loud Fan

Hello. I have been using my 1st-generation MacBook (1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 2GB RAM) every day since I bought it back in July 2006. I replaced the hard drive (which I upgraded about 1.5 years ago; it was a 320GB 7200RPM drive) a little over a month ago when it failed. After replacing the hard drive with another 320GB 7200RPM drive, things continued to work fine for a while. However, I notice a few things. For one, sometimes when the fan turns on, I sometimes hear loud crackling noises (it's hard to describe; sometimes it feels like there is a turbine inside of my computer). Secondly, sometimes when the computer is sleeping, the fan is on full blast and I am unable to wake it up; I'm forced to power it off. Finally, I occasionally notice some random freezes. I could be using the computer, and then suddenly the mouse pointer won't move, pressing buttons on the keyboard do not result in any actions, and the display doesn't change. I haven't had this problem before.
I wonder what is wrong. Could it be that my computer is aging (it will be five years old in July), or is there some other underlying reason (it might give a clue to the hard disk failure that occurred last month).

    Welcome to Apple Discussions...
I would start with the Apple Hardware Test (AHT)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
....see if it finds anything wrong....remember it needs to be run off install DVD1 that came with your MacBook...run the extended set of tests...
Since several symptoms seem to be power related an (SMC) reset might sort things out...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964?locale=en_US
Also try running the MacBook without the battery....run it on the A/C adapter
