G5 Grey screen & flashing white square after start-up & unresponsive key.

After pressing the start button on my G5, instead of the usual blue start-up screen I got a grey screen with a small white square with a blue earth-globe, that flashed on & off. This eventually turned into a small folder with a finder face alternating with a ? mark. 10 attempts (over 1/2 hr) at switching on & off got no-where, so I left the grey screen going and after 10 minutes the G5 suddely went into the blue screen loading mode & then my chosen desktop picture. All apps seem to be OK.
I have not had this experience with my 2 year old flat panel G4 & I am wondering if I should do something remedial to prevent this happening again? The question is What? I am relectant to turn the G5 off in case I get a re-run so will leave it to sleep pro tem.
I have had this Mac for about 5 months from new & it has behaved itself until now. I am a novice so would welcome any help.
Thanks - Terry Wallis.

Terry,
Personally, I have always put the computer to sleep as I have been told this is less stressful for the hardware than a restart from a cold shutdown. I haven't had any hardware problems with this iMac G3 since new in 2001 so I tend to agree with this practice.
A good FAQ by Dr. Smoke of the X-Lab for OS X maintenance can be found here which dispells many of the maintenance myths that some follow.

Hi, anyone can help me establish why my screen stay white after switched on, I can hear in the background that laptop is start up but nothing is on the display

    Hi
I can tell you how to check whats going wrong here
You need an external monitor and need to connect the unit to this monitor.
If you will not be able to see something on the 2nd screen, then I would assume that your graphic card chip is not OK.
If something would be visible on the 2nd monitor, then a internal display problem might be the reason for your issue

  • My ipod wont charge. The screen flashed white yesterday and now it doesnt work

My ipod wont charge. It died yesterday and when i did the lock home button thing the screen flashed white. After that the dead signal wont even pop up now an suggestion. Its a ipod touch 4 generation, 36gb I tried charging it to my computer, wii,tv, wall plug NOTHING WORKS.!
    1. The lock button and home thing WONT WORK.

    Try:
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • T400 screen flashes white once, won't start

Whether I try turning it on with battery or AC, the same issue occurs. The indicator lights turn on but the screen flashes white and doesn't display a thing afterword. Something is definately broken, but what?

You should methodically follow all the steps in Apple's article on Gray screen appears during startup.
    Good luck.

  • IPhone screen flashing white/black/blue

I have a 64GB iPhone 6 Plus, the phone is running the most recent version of iOS 8.
I didn't drop the phone, get it wet or anything. All of sudden the screen started flashing black and white, and blue. I can still send receive texts, calls etc, sound is working fine. I just can't interact with the screen because it's flashing colors. It is very similar to the problem experienced by the user in this thread: iphone 6 plus screen flashing white and black
I've already rebooted the device and tried plugging it into a computer (it wont recognize the phone because I've never plugged it into the computer before).
I'm on vacation, at a wedding and I don't have access to an Apple Store. Is there ANYTHING I can do to get my phone to working order?

Thanks for that info. I restore the phone without any data In the end (as a new device). In order to make the problem go away I had to:
    1. enter DFU
    2. Update device
    3. Restore device
    4. Setup as a new device
It didn't work without completing all 4 of the steps. after setting it up as a new device it still flickered a bunch and the color were funny. Especially when looking at high definition photos. It was like it was threatening to start flashing black and white again. I turned the phone off for a while and then when I turned it back on it was fine. It's been fine since then. well see what hapPens.

  • Ipod nano 7th: Screen flashes white (turns off) and stops the music.

I just got a brand new Ipod nano 7th: Less than 10 seconds after the song starts playing the screen flashes white, the apple logo shows up and it returns to 'home' screen. Battery is full. Tried to restart but that didnt help!
    What could be the problem?

    Hi joannefromhkg,
If your iPod nano (7th generation) will not turn on at all I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
iPod nano (7th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    Specifically -
Follow these steps if your iPod a power-related issue.
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting it while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least six seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
    And -
    Issue not resolved
If the issue is still not resolved, please read this information on servicing your iPod.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • Grey screen flashing question and apple logo

My power mac G4 wont boot passed a grey screen flashing apple logo and question mark. Have tried every option that the support can give you. still nothing. tried the apple hardware test and doesnt seem to be effecting it at all??? What should i do?

If you hold the Option/alt key at bootup, what shows as boot choives?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Or does it not show at all?
Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

I have a MacBook Pro bought in dec 2009. Currently has mountain lion osx installed. Worked like a dream until today. Randomly froze, so I restarted it. To find I got a grey screen. It wouldn't start. Also note my DVD drive doesn't work, but mountain lion was installed via App Store anyway.
So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
    Please someone help!

Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running.

  • View in browser - screen flashes white

Although I'm fairly new to CS5, all has been going well til now. New site, whilst testing in Google Chrome and Safari, when loading between html pages, the screen flashes white. I'm using a couple of jsQuery - one is Galleria, the other is page transitions from onextrapixel.com . Haven't experienced this with any other site I've done. Would appreciate any words of wisdom.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the combination of the two scripts.  For the onextrapixel transition can you provide a link to that one.
And lastly this jumped out at me in your code:
    <script type="text/javascript" src="../html/jquery-page-transitions/js/jquery-1.6.4.min.js"></script >
      <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.js"></script>
For some reason you are including 2 different Jqueries.  You really shouldn't need this unless one of your scripts is using an older version and if 1.6.4 (the latest version) is working you can keep one or the other, but you don't need both.

If Disk Utility cannot see your drive it doesn't look good.
You could try DiskWarrior. It is expensive but can often fix directory structures where DU cannot.
Replacing the drive is also a strong likelihood. If you don't have a fairly recent backup, then it might be worth buying DiskWarrior

    Thanx

Hi, Gary. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like you may be having logic board problems. Enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from the logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Do the symptoms look familiar? After leaving it sit overnight, does squeezing the case to the left of the trackpad allow you to start up and work for a bit as long as you keep the pressure on it there? If so, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.
    John Sawyer
    CJS Macintosh Repair
Instructions for removing the lower case:
    iFixit.com
If the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT&T Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. The theory is that picking it up by the left front corner alone can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.
    Good luck.
Please note: As a G3 iBook is quite old at this point, if you are faced with paying a repair bill on it, it may be wiser to put that money toward a new (or used) MacBook. They are quite a spectacular upgrade from the iBook G3. Again, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

  • My iPod won't turn on and the screen flashes white

the other day while using my ipod it all of a sudden reset and a diagnostics screen appeared and it started running all of these tests after which it stopped working. i then proceeded to plug it into my computer which recognized it and, after disconnecting, worked for about 10 minutes before it kept flashing in between the apple screen and the low battery screen. after a little of that it shut off completely until i plugged it back into my computer. After plugging it back in the screen lit up white and stayed lit until unplugged. once unplugged it flashes white every few seconds and thats it. my computer no longer recognizes it and restarting/reseting does not work. i could use all the help i can get. thanks.

    Any help here?

  • Grey screen/ flashing question mark folder help!

my macbook starts up into the grey screen (no logo or indicator) and will eventually go into the flashing folder with the question mark. After hours of scouring forums I have tried the following things:
restart holding c with install disc in -> macbook spins disk, thinks, ejects disk
restart holding option -> grey screen, this time with movable cursor, does not advance from there. i left it for about ten minutes- should i leave it longer?
reset PMU as per Apple article -> no effect
reset PRAM as per Apple article -> no effect
i'm beginning to become resigned to the fact that it might be an HDD issue. i feel as though i should still be able to boot from disc. i could be wrong. just wondering if anyone has ANY other suggestions before going to Apple for repairs.

If the computer is under warranty the cost is carried by Apple. If it isn't, here's what I'd do...then again, I'm a tech and have access to lots of equipment. First I'd remove the drive (easy to do. turn off the computer, remove the battery, remove the little gate, remove the drive. The instructions are in the little booklet that came with the computer) and put it into an enclosure, connect to another computer and run drive diagnostics. If the drive can be repaired I'd format it, clone from my backup, and return to the computer. If the drive is dead I'd buy a new drive, clone from my backup, and be back up and running. There's a third, remote possibility - that the problem is the logic board and not the drive. But it is remote.
What I'm getting at here is that yes, you can do it yourself but...you probably don't have an enclosure for a 2.5" drive so you'll probably just have to assume the drive is toast and buy a new one - check out NewEgg or Macsales.com. Without the external drive enclosure you give up the chance of restoring the drive and recovering data. Then again, if you can't anyway you'll have wasted $$$ on an enclosure you didn't need.
Instead of worrying about what you've heard, call the local store and get a quote on replacing the drive and installing a drive that you bring yourself. That'll give you a ballpark figure to work with and you can move forward from there.

  • Stuck on grey screen with apple logo when starting up?

    Hi,
My Macbook (2009 aluminium unibody (Leopard 10.5.8)) won't boot. When I try to start it up it gives the chime and then gets stuck at the grey screen with the Apple logo and some spinning gear below. I have tried booting with the install DVD and repairing through Disk Utility but this doesn't work. Disk Utility can see the hard drive but none of the partitions on it! This makes me think the hard drive has died.
However, I can still boot to Windows through BootCamp. From Windows 7 I can still see and access files from the Mac partition. So maybe the hard drive is ok and something else needs fixing... SATA cable???
    Other info:
The night before this happened my computer froze when trying to shut down from Windows and I had to force shut down.
The current internal hard drive is only about 4 months old (a bit short for it to be dying already - its a Western Digital 750gb 7200rpm). I replaced the old one as it had stopped working (at least i thought it was the hard drive ). The hard drive I replaced had lasted about 2 years (Seagate 500gb 7200rpm). Maybe the 7200rpm gets too hot?
Any help much appreciated as I really don't want to be reinstalling again.
    Thanks

Boot from the OS dvd and start the install process, but stop immediately after the language selection. (You are not reinstalling.) At this point you will see a Utilities menu. Open Disk Utility, select your start up disk, and click on Repair Disk. When that is done, quit DU and restart.
See if that procedure will let you boot as usual.
