G5 hangs within 5-10 minutes of surfing?

Hi Everyone,
I'm a PC person by trade trying to help out someone with a G5 Mac as our local Mac shop went under...
Machine freezes up, primarily when surfing the web and the page involves graphics. It's a G5, 1.6GHz, 1.25GB of RAM, 80GB SATA drive with 17 or 19" LCD. Except for my Dell USB mouse and keyboard, there are no other peripherals attached. She brought it to another place and they said it tested fine - obviously they didn't test it enough... I've spent 10+ hours and have had the pleasure of having it freeze up several times, at which point the fans sound louder than 5 of my air conditioners combined Here's what I've tested...
Memory - first instinct. Ran extensive tests, took out some sticks, completely swapped out with two 512MBs from my PC, still freezes...
Video card. Removed video card leaving no video, but connected through VNC. Still froze up after 5 minutes of surfing. Once froze up just trying to delete some files in the library/cache folder.
Network card - instead of using the built-in network card, I installed a PCI card and it still froze up.
Hard Drive. Insisting something is corrupt somewhere, and wanting to preserve her data, I suggested we get a new hard drive and I install OS 10.4.7 fresh with nothing. I unplugged the 80GB, plugged the new 250GB drive in and it installed fine-no hangups during the install. Within 5-10 minutes of using the web or downloading updates, it froze up. Grrr... Thought maybe 10.4.7 was the culprit. Erased and reformatted using 10.3.4 I think it was. Came up fine, started to install the recommended updates (including 10.3.9), but it froze up before it even got to the OS update, maybe halfway throughout... Therefore it freezes with both her 80GB with everything on it (10.4.7) and using a fresh install of 10.4.7 or 10.3.4...
If this machine is just sitting idle with the screen saver, it won't freeze up. My fear is that the logic board or processor is going bad? I don't have another Mac I can jsut swap boards out to confirm so I really hope that's not the case... Any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks so much for any ideas...
Scott
Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Scott,
Two more things that I can think of:
1) Try running "SystemLoad" (can be found at http://www.bresink.com) and see if the computer crashes with this puppy running at full speed.
2) Download the freeware copy of hardware monitor (also on the same website as SystemLoad). Bring up all the temperatures (particularly CPU and memory bank) and monitor them while you use the computer, download stuff, surf the web, etc.
From the symptoms you are describing it looks like there's a component somewhere that eventually heats up too much and causes the computer to lock up. It really could be anything. As soon as any component is outside its operational range (by "any component" I mean the usual suspects: Power Supply, motherboard, RAM, CPUs, etc.) the computer just stops working.
I'm more experienced with PCs than with Macs. In the PC world whenever a PC froze (you know, those extremely rare occassions when it's not Windows' fault) it was usually a RAM chip that was getting too hot or the CPU not being cooled appropriately.
Hopefully the hardware monitor will bring some insight into the problem.
I hope this helps,
Julian

Erica from Apple support:  Your efforts to help on this subject are appreciated.  However, during my wait for your supervisor, just when I stepped away from my desk for a moment you must have picked up your phone again.  When I heard a noise (other than the hold music) I rushed back to my desk only to hear you hang up.  When the phone rang and the ANI said "Apple support" I tried to pick up but you were gone by the time I got the button pressed.
Hopefully you'll see this note and leave a message on how to resolve this issue for me and the others from other similar questions posed on this forum.
    Thanks,

I have a one year old Macbook Air 13.  I have a brand new 22" external monitor.  In turning the Macbook and monitor on, the monitor displays very well, but within a few minutes it begins this incessant blinking (temporary black out of the screen that lasts anywhere from 1-5 seconds).  This has been going on for a long time (it also happended with my older monitor which apparantly I threw out when I should have kept it thinking it was the problem).  From reading various blogs in the Apple support community, this appears to be a widespread problem, but I don't find a solution, only a lot of speculation.  I'm very surprised the Apple folks haven't figured this out.   As a new Apple user, heretofor, I have been very impressed with the support and effort to get fixes out to users.  This, however, has me frustrated to the point of junking my Mac and going back to a PC.  I love the Macbook Air and most of the functionality, but I cannot function without an external monitor. Anybody have any ideas, please help.  Frustrated, Jim

Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,
Let me know if this worked for you.

That sounds like a compatibility issue with an add-on that you have installed, as reported by a number of users in both Firefox 22 and Firefox 23 over the last couple of months. If you would provide a listing of your installed extensions ''(as you were prompted to do when creating this thread)'' maybe one of us can advise you which extension is the mot likely culprit. You will need to re-install Firefox 23 to do further diagnostic testing.
As far as the compatibility of Firefox 23 and Win XP SP3, Mozilla has verified they are compatible and not one user ''(including me on two separate PC's)'' has reported a problem with compatibility.

  • Windows 7 64-bit hangs completely after some minut...

    Hi all,
My Windows 7 64-bit machine hangs completely after some minutes using Nokia Suite 3.3.89 connected with a E72 through USB cable.
When connecting, everything goes fine and I can usually synchronize data successfully between the E72 and computer. I can also connect to Internet successfully through the E72 modem.
However, after some minutes (usually 4-5), the computer hangs completely, with the screen frozen and beign completely irresponsive to any mouse or key input.
The only way to unlock it is to press the computer On/Off key and restart it completely.
    Has anybody experienced this issue?
    Thanks

    Hi Roberto,
I too faced the same problem and I too use Windows 7 X64 bit, when ever i open Nokia Suite and maximize it, my screen turns completely Grey/White and nothing works including ctrl+alt+del and I would need to force reboot using the reset button this is really frustrating! I have already checked the display drivers, updated drivers but again same issue and I reinstalled nokia suite as per your suggestion in the above thread but no use  please suggest a permanent solution for this!
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Weblogic server 5.1 goes to hang within an hour

I have the problem with weblogic server 5.1 that it goes to hang within around
an hour. There is no obvious error or exceptions shown in the weblogic log.
But at the time the weblogic server is hanging, I just observed from the weblogic
console GUI that once a user logon to the web application (the web server is iPlanet
6.0), the number of bean in cache of the corresponding stateful session bean increases
one but does not drop. Every single logon makes an increment 1 to the # of the
bean in cache of the corresponding session bean but no dropping.
What the session bean does is actually obtain a connection from the weblogic server
and get data from database. I went down to the database (Sybase ASE 11.9) at
the hanging time but did not see any long-running process nor table blocking that
may hinder the database response time. I do not understand what the session bean
    was waiting for.
The only hints that I have is the below error message which was found in the iPlanet
web server log. Anyone please help to tell me what the problem can be?
Error found in iPlanet web server

    Thanks, Rob.
I will try and see if it helps. Thanks again.

    Thanks for the thread dump.
Yes, DriverManager is the problem. Unfortunately this class is
    well-known for causing deadlocks.
You really do not ever want to use DriverManager.getConnection from
code that runs in the server. Instead, you should define a TxDataSource
for your connection pool and use DataSource.getConnection.
I would recommend you lookup the DataSource in your stateless session
bean's ejbCreate method and store the DataSource in a member variable.
Your methods can call DataSource.getConnection when they need a JDBC
    connection.

    Rob,
I got the same symptom with weblogic server 6.1 today and I got thethread dump
for it this time. I read through the log and I wonder if the methodcall from
"java.sql.DriverManager.println" led to the hanging problem.
I attach the thread dump for your reference.
Do you have any advice? Thanks in advance.

    Rob,
    Thanks for your advice firstly.
I am not able to reproduce the problem at this moment so I do not have
    the thread
dump for review. But I did take a look at the Queue Length in the
    WL
    console
GUI at the time hanging and I found it kept to be 0 or 1. Also, the
    heap size
    was just about 60%.
But I have missed out one thing in my previous post. Besides the stateful
    session
bean, another stateless session bean was used at the time user logon.
    And the
stateless session bean just behaved the same as what the stateful one
    did at the
time the WL was hanging, i.e. its "bean in cache" increased one when
    a user tried
    to logon.
What else shall I look into in order to find out the root cause?

Take a thread dump (or several) when the server is hung. If you can't
figure out the problem from that, post the thread dump here, and we'll

  • TS3999 Why can't I delete a recurring event on my calendar?  Every time I delete it, it show up again within a few minutes.

Why can't I delete a recurring event on my calendar?  Every time I delete it, it show up again within a few minutes.

Thank you for your prompt response.
I did take a look at the Jira issue you referenced. It suggests that the MediaPlayer be set to null in the MediaView after the last media file has been played and nullify the MediaPlayer reference. However, all this relies on GC to cleanup the resources. (In fact, the sample code in Jira shows a call to System.gc(), which, I understand, is not guaranteed to run immediately.)
All the same, I tried the suggestion, but it didn't help my situation. So I am stuck with my alternative.
It is rather disheartening that there is not a clear cut API for cleaning up media resources when you are done, instead of being dependent on GC.
    Thanks again.

  • My i phone 4 fell down and I can't connect to my provider.it also recharges itself within a few minutes and the back of the phone is really hot.what should i do?

my i phone 4 fell down and I can't connect to my provider.it also recharges itself within a few minutes and the back of the phone is really hot. I tried to send it to the technical support but they told my that the reparationcosts will be higher than the actual price of a new phone.is this possible?

    Yes, it is entirely possible.
Although in most countries Apple offers an out of warranty replacement for a nominal fee.  In the US it is $199 for the 4S and $149 for older generations of the iPhone.  Depending on where you are, that may be an option.

  • Since recent fixes fron you Thunderbird now downloads the same e mails twice from the server within a few minutes I use Windows live mail

Since first using Thunderbird it worked ok but following recent upgrades/fixes it now downloads some e mails from the server twice within a few minutes. I have it set to check for new mail every 10 mins. I generally leave my e mails on the server but I deleted all mail from the server to try to fix this thinking it could be server side but the problem continues!

    Ok
    Item one.
Live consider 15 minutes the minimum period to check mail . More frequent attempts are access denied and repeated attempts results in a request for your password as Thunderbird decides it obviously has it wrong.
    Item two'
Disable email scanning in your anti virus program, It is by far the most common cause of duplicate mails being downloaded.

  • IPad won't turn on without power cable and when it does, it shuts down within a few minutes

This last weekend I went to visit my sister and when I came back, my iPad was turned off. I turned it on again and all seemed fine but then within a few minutes, it went straight back off. It won't start up without the power cable attached, and when it does, it says "No WiFi" in settings, not "Not connected", but it's greyed out and says "No WiFi". I did a restore which went OK, but when I was restoring it shut off too and the restore didn't carry through. I'm really worried! I can't visit an Apple Store for a week, so I just wanted to see if I could get a rough idea of what the problem is now?

Your iPad is in Recovery Mode.
    Follow the instructions here carefully:

As stated I'm having trouble with my computer, I boot it up and within a few minutes it freezes and I have to restart it, I tried updating it to the latest mavericks but it won't finish the installation it's stuck at the end, what can I do to fix this? I need it for homework tonight.

    Crowntheme,
you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still freeze after a few minutes?

  • TS1398 My iPad will connect to our wireless but within a few minutes of not accessing it disconnects and I have to go into settings and turn wireless off and on everytime I want to reconnect.  It won't automatically pick up a connection

I cannot stay connected to the wireless.  Everytime I am online it will disconnect if not accessed within a few minutes and I have to go into settings to turn wireless off than on again.  We have a security key that was added when I set up iPad and tried Internet provider help line but weren't able to figure it out.  Tried FaceTime and wouldn't connect even though I was getting a call request, but wouldn't connect and now FaceTime won't verify my apple I'd. It's very easy to update firmware; read the manual that comes with the router?

  • Wake On Lan only works within a few minutes

    Hi!
I have a problem...I left my MacPro sleeping for a few hours and now it will not respond to wake on lan...It does work to wake within a few minutes but not after a few hours.
Anyone have a solution for this? (I'n not using a router)

Found the problem!! A nice person on logmein forums helped me. Thought i should post the solution in case somebody runs into this issue. I was forwarding the local IP of my computer (192.168.2.2) to a port (say port 9). It seems a router remembers the local IP's for a few minutes after the mac goes to sleep and after that its ARP table (which links MAC address to IP address) gets deleted. This is why it works for the first few minutes and not after that.
So the local IP being forwarded should be the 'broadcast address' and not the local computer's LAN address. It seems for subnet mask 255.255.255.0 the broadcast for IP range 192.168.2.x takes place for x=255. So i changed the router settings to forward local IP 192.168.2.255 to port 9. And it started to work. Hopefully this should help anyone with the same issue.

  • Photoshop CS3  Hangs for over a minute upon opening a file

My Photoshop CS3 (Windows XP) all of a sudden takes over a minute to open any file. The programs starts fine, then when I select a file to open, the program pauses, then hangs for over a minute and the photoshop window becomes blank before the file finally appears. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Screen brightens intensely, quickly, hangs for a few minutes

My Macbook Pro screen brightens intensely, becoming very very bright, and the notebook becomes hot, hangs for around 2 minutes before getting back to normal. This is a Macbook Pro 2009, running Mavericks. It was on Mountain Lion when this problem occurred, I upgraded to Maverick yeserday, but the problem still exists.
I experienced this after a Flash Player video and it appears it's some kind of malaware. I can't find a way to fix this. I reset the SMC, reset the NVRAM, scanned using Sophos anti-virus, but the problem reduced (i.e. now happens once a day vs before it was once every hour).

System Preferences >  Flash Player > Advanced >  Delete  All
         Press the "Delete All" button.
        Try again.
