G5 HD spinning out of control, resulting in frozen system. Help!

I have an Apple Power Macintosh G5 2.0 DP (PCI-X 2) running OS 10.5. Well-maintained and in excellent condition, it performed flawlessly for years. Recently, however, the internal 1 TB drive began spinning at a very high rate of speed, resulting in a frozen system. Booting from the second internal drive resulted in the same problem, as did booting from an external drive. Disk Utility and Tech Tool Pro could not discover any hardware problems. Could the problem be related to a faulty HD controller and, if so, what are my repair options? Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

And/or iStat Pro...

If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.

  • Safari Spinning Out of Control - Why Doesn't This Get Better?!!

    For a very extended period, Safari has been spinnin out of control memory-wise - no other OS I use does this, not does any other browser I use on OSX.  This goes on and on and on and on, with no real remidiation coming from Apple.  It is maddening and ruiining the usability of using the MAC and OSX.  It may be due to Flash, or Flash and Apple's refusal to properly work with Adobe - Flash is out there - it is on a huge number of websites and not just for entertainment - it cannot be avoided - also transactional sites such as StubHub use it.  If I have ten or fifteen web pages open, Safari, between Safari Web Content, Safari and Flash, can take three or four gigabytes or even more, and Flash is the least of them.  It does not happen with Firefox.  With Safari spinning out of control, the entire device slows down.  This has been going on for far far far too long.  It happen on my MacBook and my iMac.  When is this going to get resolved?  I am starting to despise using the Mac and OSX.

  • G5 Hard Drive Spins out of control

    Every so often (like today) since the day I brought this G5 home, the Hard Drive starts to spin out of control (whether in use or asleep). I then have to force it down. When I re-start, it's just fine. This probably happens once every three months. I could never get an answer from Mac - any ideas why this happens?

    Have to say I have zero idea what an out of control spin would be (off the race track of course).
    But with any system or hard drive issue, how about repairing the drive directory with Disk Warrior.
    Force shutdowns generally cause directory problems. A Safe Boot helps, some. Not enough.
    I would not say it is fine, though, and Apple First Aid doesn't do enough.

  • Time capsule hard disk spinning out of control

    My TC's hard disk out of of the blue yesterday started spinning louder than it usually does and cuasing it to emit a whirring, grinding like sound which acclerated to the point I thought the tc was either going to become airborn and/or explode or both.
    The tc was not living in unusal condions both enviroment, configuration or extreme temperature variations. It was on a seperate return portion of my desk with nothing around it to crowd or adversly affect. Configuration is ethernet to comcast smc business gateway over the wan port and a direct ethernet to thunderbolt conx to my macbook pro retina and finally a sonos bridge was connected as well.
    At the time this occured I had not been putting the tc through anything more unusal than providing DHCPservices for my local area network in my house.
    When I plug it back in its spits and tries to spin but gives up and the status light remains solid amber. it will not reset either as far as changing from solid amber to blinking to open airport utility.
    its a first generation 500gb tc, however it is the third device genius bar has replaced since i purchased originally in Apr 2009? each time genius bar has replaced it through apple care on my mac as a peripheral device covered by applecare they have strangly had three! of the original (same 2008/9 model to replace the failed one which none to date has ever had any of the sympotons i describe here. just trouble accessing files. Now my fear is I no longer have the imac w/apple care the tc was covered by but I have a new macbook pro retina which I bought in December and is still under warranty so i wanted to try and economize and wait to by apple care later this spring.
    all my backups are on the tc 500 gigs worth plus I need the router support as i have comcast business class and they dont offer a wifi cable modem. I'm frantic that I will get nothing from apple care or genius bar but the same bland, robotic like detatchment all apple employees seem to be secretly instructed to treat its custromers with these days as they maddeningly tell me to buy a newer tc for $299 or $399 that i simply dont have the money to do so and dont antcipate having it at all in the next 6 months especially snce I just shelled out 2 grand in Decemeber for the new macbook pro retina. Especially saddened I coud have potentially lost all of my photos and my 60 or so gigs of itunes media purchased entirely from itunes fair and square for the  past decade to the tune of twenty thousand dollars!
    Appreciative of all your expertise,
    Desperately mistrustful of Apple in the post Steve culture
    San Francisco, Calif

    I am reading through the boards here and it sounds as though there was a small fraction of those who purchased the orignal tc in the spring of 2008 who have experinced the same issues exactly. It also sounds as though Apple ackowledged this to those who complained with a replacement of a later generation tc AND conceeded to those affected that there was indeed a design flaw. Astonishingly, Apple did not issue a press release nor a product recall!
    As I said Genius Bar here in San Francisco did replace the device three times but with the exact same model. The most recent swap was in Jan of 2012.
    I am sick to death of being disregarded and abused by Apple everytime I experience a valid hardware issue or reuire tech support period. Since 2004 I have faithfully purchased Apple Care agreements with nearly every device I've purchased and this one time when I try to save a little money by waiting untill the 90 day warranty on my macbook pro I purchased in Dec 2012 is close to expiring AS advised "off the record" by more than one Apple Care advisor.
    An abbriviated list of the hardware I have purchaded directly from Apple retail and online:

    imac 27" 2010
    time capsule 2008
    airport expresss 4 purchased between 2008-2012
    the last airport express I bought less than one week before the new model hit the shelves but do you think Apple felt compelled to tell me or even let me trade up?
    iphone frst gen 2007
    iphone 3g 2008
    iphone 3gs (4 devices of this model purchased between 2008-2010
    iphone 4 (2 devices)

    iphone 5 purchased in oct 2012
    Macbook pro retina purchased Dec 2012
    Do you think maybe I've just been a little too loyal? Or am I just stupid???

  • Fan problem...spinning out of control!

    Okay first off I love my new Macbook but it isnt perfect. The powerbox hisses and the fan moos a bit but last night something crazy happened! I was browsing on youtube and then hit the back button and the mac froze up and that little multicolored circle just kept spinning and nothing happened. Then the fan started to speed up faster and faster till it was going an insane speed full blast and I had to shut it off by using the power button which didnt go well either it sounded like the thing was going to take off for liftoff the fan was overspinning so fast. I was low on batteries and not plugged in so I dunno what would have caused this. Man I really don't wanna have to ship it back specially after my XBOX 360 just died too and I had to send that back. They really don't make stuff like they used to

    Just called applesupport and he basically said don't worry about it and if it happens a few times then there may be a problem. Most likely since the PC froze and the fan is run by the OS it was just running faster to protect the PC at least thats what he said.

  • Spinning out of control

    Hi,
    The JSpinner keeps firing if one of the buttons is pushed down and held down. Is there a way to just receive a single event. So that the mouse button needs to be released and pushed again before the next event is generated?
    Rene'

    Safe Mode should not prevent your Mac from connecting to the Internet. It will be generally a pain to use and graphics will be jerky but the problems you describe should not occur.
    I'm beginning to suspect your Mac's operating system has been corrupted for reasons unknown, and the next logical action before suspecting a hardware problem would be to reinstall OS X from its original installation discs.
    Before you do that please perform an SMC reset according to the following. It is justified for certain performance problems that can't be explained any other way, and is completely harmless to your Mac.
    Read and follow all the steps. After that, restart your Mac normally. If it still misbehaves, locate the original, grey System Install DVD that came with your iMac because you will need it to reinstall Snow Leopard. That will not erase your data.
    Before Resetting the SMC
    Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
    Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
    Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
    Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
    Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
    Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
    Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Test: Streaming... streaming. "Streaming". Hmmm...

  • G5 Fans Run Out-of-Control in Target Disc Mode - Help?

    Trying to use a Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 (OS 10.5.8) with 7GB DDR SDRAM as a target disk. Host is 400Mhz PowerPC G3 (OS 9.2.1) with 320GB RAM.
    I'm trying to move ~25GB of data from the G3 to the G5. G5 has roughly 600 GB available space.
    G5 goes into TD Mode no problem through SystemPrefs>StartupDisk>TargetDiskMode and restart. Everything was fine while I checked the folder I wanted to move. The fan(s) started to kick on a little bit just before I dragged and dropped it onto the target G5 folder, then as the data started to transfer they all kicked on and started running faster and faster and faster until the G5 sounded like it was going to blow up. Just ridiculous. I stopped the transfer, ejected the G5 disk, and shut the G5 down.
    Anyone have an idea what's causing this and how to remedy it?
    Thank you.
    **Note: After the fact I noticed that (because of a power outage) the transfer folder had a "Created" date of 2011, and a "Modified" date of 1904 (or something like that). I've since corrected the date/time issue on the G3 and modified the folder so it has the correct date. Would this cause the problem?**

    Apparently this is normal since the target disk is functioning as an external disk, not a computer, and not under the control of the target disk OS, which normally runs the fans:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/2025856#2025856
    It's kind of a default protection mode.
    Since the post linked above is from 2006, can anyone confirm this is still cool (unintentional pun)?
    Still sounds really bad, by my estimate...
    Thanks.

  • Budgetary Control Results Report - GL Super User

    General Ledger Super User > Requests > Single Set > Budgetary Control Results Report.
    I believe this is new to R12 to be able to run from the GL. All reports are active per note [Article ID 1161866.1]. The problem is I'm not getting any XML besides something along these lines:

  • MacBook Air is laggy and the fan is out of control

    My MacBook Air 2013 is laggy and the fan is out of control. The fan is out of control even when I start my macbook up. I don't know if it has something to do with Yosemite or something else. I have tried SMC restarting, and nothing has changed. I would really love to hear if anyone else is having this problem, and I would love to hear if any of you have any tips. Also I checked if anything is using up my CPU a bunch, and nothing is out of the ordinary.

    The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
    When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
    ☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
    ☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
    Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
    If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
    Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
    If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
    User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
    Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
    Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

    This happens to me regularly on ubuntu 14.04 with a Dell e7440 ever since I got it.  Looks like a software bug.  I'd be happy to help debug any way possible? (past arch user)
    Specifically, I'd describe the behavior as the cursor jumping around incredibly quickly while randomly clicking the middle button, resulting in spammed pastes.  Clicking the middle button myself usually gets it unstuck.  The touchpad is disabled, and I use an external mouse at work with no problem.

       </af:panelTabbed> Above is my jsff code. Here how/where to add the phase listener to paopulate the managed bean while page render. Do I need to iterate the DC to get and push the each parameter in to ManagedBean or is there any easy way to do this by EL mapping directly at jsff. Please clarify.
    Thanks

    That is what exactly I am trying right now. I am binding each of my page fragment outputText item in to backing bean and by that way trying to populate the values.
    But the issue here is, the backing bean method doesn't getting any value until I hit any of the link or the button in the fragment. While loading the page the bean set and get is null. If i hit any link or button it is filled up with the vaule. As per my design, I would like to populate the bean method along with page load before any user action. But cant able to do this!! :(
    Below is my sample code what I am trying right now
            <af:panelLabelAndMessage label="#{uiBundle.NETID}" id="plam13">
                      <af:outputText value="#{bindings.netid.inputValue}" id="ot4" binding="#{UserDataBean.netId}"/>
           </af:panelLabelAndMessage>
    backing bean ex:
    private RichOutputText netId;
    static String netidVal;
        public void setNetId(RichOutputText netId) {
           netidVal= netId.getValue() == null? "":netId.getValue().toString();
           this.netId = netId;
        public RichOutputText getNetId() {
           return netId;
        public String getNetIdVal() {
           return netidVal;
        }Thanks

  • Safari out of control in yosemite

    Ever since updating imac, the Safari browser is out of control.  The advertisements are overwhelming and a new tab constantly opens for  mackeeper or other ads.  I am also getting a series of adobe flash player errors saying to change settings to 32-bit mode.  Not sure what to do.

    There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
    You may have installed the "Downlite" or "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
    Back up all data before making any changes.
    Besides the files listed in the support article, you may also need to remove this item in the same way:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
    One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
    If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
    The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
    This malware is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
    In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
    Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
              Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.
