G5 Ignoring leopard disk!

Hi,
I recently had to reinstall my system after it totally crashed (no fault of the system, i was testing software to put on my new laptop and one of the things went bad)
At reinstall it would not boot from leopard, so I reinstalled tiger. That is now fully updated and set up but I cant use my files because they are in iLife 09 format that needs leopard.
When I put the leopard disk in the first time it came up and i clicked install, it it tried to boot from the leopard disk and then ejected and booted from my hdd. Now it just ignores the disk, I have two leopard disks and both do the same thing, I installed leopard on this computer two years ago so why does it now work now, and how can I fix it.

1) Have you cleaned your DVD drive? sometimes if your laser lens is really dirty it won't read/write properly. I have definitely had this happen during re-installs with retail discs. They cost about 10 bucks, I generally keep several of them around. Sometimes they don't work in certain computers/disc drives, so I hope you have one that works (by works, I mean, you can insert the disc, and the drive will read it, instead of just ejecting it). Sometimes I've had to perform 2 cleanings in a row (really dirty lens). It could also be a drive failure (Don't expect your original optical drive to last indefinitely, they spin at over one hundred mph generally).
Also, the disc could be scratched or dirty? Water and microfiber will get the nastiest boogers off of optical media.
2) try inserting the disc, performing a normal restart from the  menu, then holding down the OPTION key during startup. See if the disc shows up there.
Also,
Grant's points are valid, except, if you backup your leopard disc to a DVD-R DL disc, then it will still work. Might not work with a DVD+R DL disc. I generally think it's fair to backup such pricy discs, as they do get scratched, like any other (install) disc.

  • IMac not booting from Leopard Disk

I have been given the task of helping out a friend who has recently inherited a 20" Aluminium iMac from some late family members. The machine has a password to get in which he doesn't know but other than that it boots as far as the login screen fine. I tried to get it to boot from my Leopard disk and it just reboots instead of launching OS X from the DVD. I've run a hardware check and everything is reported as running fine (although I did leave it doing a full one last night, so i'll post any updates if there are any). Does anyone know what might be the problem?
I've tried holding down alt and selecting the DVD, reboots as before.
I've tried holding down C, which it just reboots to after spinning up the DVD
I've tried holding down cmd, alt, shift, del but it seems to just ignore this key combination
I'm using an old white keyboard and a USB mouse as the ones that came with it are wireless.
    Thanks in advance

It's quite possible that your retail Leopard DVD predates the release of the iMac and so lacks the necessary drivers for the newer hardware. Ask your friend if he got the disks that came with the iMac and if so use that disk set. If he didn't get them, identify the exact iMac model:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1758
    Then you can look here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
and see what version of Leopard came with the iMac. If your retail disk is earlier than the version that came with the iMac, it won't work. You'll need a later version of the retail disk (if available) or your friend will need to contact Apple tech support and see if he can order a replacement disk set for the iMac.
    Hope this helps.

  • Leopard Disk made my Mac Pro Kernel Panic

I have used original OSX 10.5 Leopard Disk to repair my mac pro HD, but it made my Mac Pro Kernel Panic. It was strange that the Mac Pro install disk one can success enter install mode!
Although I have conducted RESET PRAM procedure, the Leopard disk still made the mac Kernel Panic.

I would like to ask if you upgraded your graphics card and if so, that it might require a later OS version than the DVD.
Two, I never use the DVD to repair permissions (Apple warns users to not use the DVD to do so now with Leopard); or to repair disk drives.
You are better off setting up a bootable hard drive for emergencies; a bootable clone of your working system; and, TimeMachine, so you have more than just one backup set or method.
Kernel panics are caused by hardware otherwise, most often due to 3rd party devices and even cables, including Firewire or USB.

    Yes. Try Amazon.
Before you do upgrade to Snow Leopard, make sure your Mac meets the requirements.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard - Technical Specifications
Make sure the disc you tried using doesn't have any fingerprints or smudges on it. The optical drive can't read the disk otherwise.
If your Mac won't read the disc, might be a good idea to rule out any problems with the startup disk BEFORE trying to upgrade the system.

Your problem is not Boot Camp, in fact, is your optical drive. Win XP requires indeed sp2, but also the internal drive, does not work from external optical drive.
For other possible tricks, please use the appropriate Boot Camp forum, not here. Mac OS X may be installed from both external and internal optical drive and/or internal/external partition of a disk, any disk. Windows is not so generous.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro not boot up with the Snow Leopard Disk?

I have erased the entire hard drive on a 2011 macbook pro that had snow leopard on it. I was corrupted. I not insert my Snow Leopard Disk and the machine will not boot. I chose target mode to erase the hard drive from my mac book pro with Mt. Lion on it.
    Thank uou for any help,
    Ken

Target mode?  Is there a second computer involved?  Why not insert the Snow Leopard disc in the computer on which you wish to install and hold down the C key to boot from it?
If the disc came with a different computer it will not boot another model.  Retail discs also may not boot all model computers, even those that came with the same major version.  For example, some MBPs came with 10.6.6 but a retail disc may only be 10.6.3.

  • Can I repair a Snow Leopard disk from a Tiger machine?

I had the hard drive go down on a MacPro with an Intel processor running OS 10.6.4.  When I try to boot, it gets to the Apple screen and shuts down.  Running the disk utility from the installation disk gives me the error:
    Checking HFS Plus Volume
    Invalid Extent Entry
    Volume Check Failed
I pulled the drive and connected it with a USB adapter to a spare Mac G5 with a PowerPC processor running Tiger 10.4.11.  I can read the disk on the G5 with Tiger.  Disk utility on the G5 gives me the same error when trying to repair the disk.
Are there any utilities out there I can run on Tiger to repair the Snow Leopard disk?  Free if possible?
Or a good OSX utility that will let me image the drive to another hard drive?  This is a production machine in a printing environment and I need to get it back up and running as soon as possible.
    Thx...
    Carvelli

I could not repair the disk from the command line either.  It gave me the same error messages.  I did not try Carbon Copy Cloner...yet.  I had an extra 250GB drive which I re-installed 10.6.4.
I can bring up the old drive on the USB adapter, so I am going to try the Mac Migration Assistant.  Which I've never done before.  Does anyone know if it bring over all the applications during the migration?  Or will I have to re-install all the applications over again?

I used my snow leopard disk to erase my hard drive. Now I want to eject the snow leopard disk to clean install from the lion boot disk I made. How do I eject the snow leopard disk? It is the start up disk and I can't figure out how to get it out of the computer so I can put my lion boot disk in. Thanks

turn the mac all the way off. turn the mac on by pressing the power button. as soon as the apple logo appears, pres and hold your mouse button(trackpad mouse clicker etc...) until the CD comes out.

  • Possible to use Leopard disk to install Boot Camp on 10.4.1 ?

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.1, and I have a number of Mac programs that are not yet compatible with Leopard. I would like to install Boot Camp, but I can't install Leopard until those programs are updated. I have already purchased Leopard (but haven't installed it), so I do have the Leopard disk. (I was asleep at the wheel and didn't download the Boot Camp beta before it was pulled.)
Is it possible for me to use the Leopard disk to install Boot Camp on my 10.4.1 system now, but wait to make the Leopard OS upgrade later?
    Thanks

Ah. There may be other mirrors around.
You may be able to install just Boot Camp Assistant from the Leopard DVD, but I'd be a little suspicious about how well it would work, and whether it would cause other problems. You should certainly be able to use the Leopard DVD instead of burning a drivers CD.
If you can't locate a copy of Tiger BCA, you might want to look at some of the posts that describe doing all of this manually - mostly that's creating a partition that Windows can use. Disk Utility will want to erase the entire drive to add a partition, though, which you may not be willing to do. Some third-party partition utilities claim to be able to do this without a reformat. Regardless of what path you take, be sure you have a good backup of anything not easily reinstalled or restored from other places!

  • Reinstalling Adobe Apps to a Leopard Disk

I have just updated to Leopard and did what I usually do which is to do a clean install to a new hard disk and then migrate my personal files. I don't migrate the apps as I know there are problems doing this, and it gives me the opportunity to do a bit of house cleaning. I then reinstall the applications and update them to the latest versions as I go along.
However with the new Adobe activation system I have run into a problem. As a test I tried to reinstall Illustrator on the Leopard disk, but it came back with an error saying I have to uninstall the application even though it isn't on the disk. It must be seeing some files I don't know about, files that must have been transferred when I did the migration of my personal stuff. How do I find these files if there are any?
Apart from the inconvenience this is causing in wasted time, I'd like to be able to keep a Tiger 10.4.11 disk with Illustrator and my other Adobe apps, on the same machine as my Leopard disk. I have a mac pro and I can boot it from either the Leopard disk or the Tiger one. I want to do this so I can test the Leopard disk before I commit to it. I switch back and forth until I am happy with the new system. If I uninstall the apps on the old disk I lose this functionality.
Would it have been better if I transferred the apps as well in the first place
    All the best
    richard

I think it's more complicated than that. Because it's a second disc effectively this could be seen by Adobe's activation system as a third install which of course is not allowed. Which means I have to either migrate my apps at the same time I do my prefs, or uninstall on the old disc and re install to the new Leopard.
Whatever it's a right royal pain and I hate Adobe because of it. Why punish paying customers with this draconian system. Give us a little respect I say.
    all the best

  • Leopard Disk Utility and Input/Output error messages.

This post is describing a problem I had and how I managed to fix it. When I was researching the Input/Output error message I was getting a couple of people had mentioned this fix on the apple discussion boards, so I thought I would add my fix to support them. (Isn't google fab!) I've no idea if this is the right place for this so please bear with me.
Okay a bit of background:- over christmas we treated ourselves to leopard and as my laptop is now three years old I decided to do a complete reformat and installation. I used my 60GB iPod as an external harddrive and backed everything up. Installed Leopard no probs and was a very happy bunny.
The problem:- I then wanted to remove everything off my iPod. So I thought "I know I'll use Disk Utility".... I tried it with the 'default' setting and got an Input/Output error message straight away (irrespective of whether I did it as an extended journal or not.) When I tried it with the Zero Out option (can't remember exactly what it's called) it came up with the Input/Output error message right at the very end. Argh! iTunes and Finder no longer recognised it, but Disk Utility did.
My research:- After using google I saw some guys on here talking about formatting proper external harddrives using leopards disk utility and they were getting the same messages as me. It turns out it is a fault with Leopards Disk Utility. So I did what the guys recommended.
The solution:- (Thank god I had tiger!) I put in my tiger installation disk, clicked 'install tiger' and restarted the laptop. I clicked my my language, but then rather than going through the actual installation process I went to the top menu bars and chose Disk Utility (using tiger's disk one rather than my laptop's leopard one.) And erased the iPod there. Now when I quit the installation and opened my laptop up properly it worked, both iTunes and finder could see it!!! (I just had to restore my ipod in itunes - and now I'm happily transferring all my music back!)
I hope this helps someone in the same position as me!

I took it to work to use my Windows PC to try and format the drive, but got the same problem. I figured either the drive (it's a 2.5" that used to be inside my AlBook) or the external housing it lives is was faulty. Only way I could test without spending more money is by putting the 2.5" drive inside my powerbook, and booting the (Ti) powerbook from a bootable firewire ipod. I successfully booted from the ipod, and had the same problem with the now internal drive: only visible in disk utility, any attempt to erase fails. Also, I plugged the small 10 GB drive that WAS in the TiBook (but which I removed to put the other, problematic drive in) into the external housing, and it connected to other machines just fine.
Turns out the problem is the hard drive itself.
So now my question becomes: If disk utility can see the hard disk when it is connected (I have it back in the external enclosure now), but gives "input/output error" messages when I try to erase/format it, is there any way I can salvage this drive? It's an 80 GB drive, and I was looking forward to making it my internal TiBook drive (replacing the old 10 GB drive that's in there now).

If you have the exact same problem - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  If you have AppleCare call them!

  • I book G4 won't read leopard disk!!

    HI --
saw an earlier post about a power book G5 not being able to read the leopard disk. i've been having the same problem. my husband already installed the softward sucessfully on his power book G5. . . .and then when we inster the disk into my iBook G4 (already upgraded to tiger last year w/ out problems. . .) it either spits it out or doesn't read it at all. its a double-layered disk ( family pack. . .4 copies made from original, like they said to in the store. . .). . .and even tried re-starting , pressing "c" button, etc.
    any ideas?
any other ways to install? maybe fire wire. . .??
just did disk warrior and cleaned out to allow for more memory space as well. . .
please help. . .i REALLY want to upgrade to leopard!!!
    THANKS!!!!!

I had similar problems - the Leopard install on my G5 PPC went without a hitch but I had problems on my G4 powerbook. It kept ejecting the install disk. I cleaned the drive (using a CD disk with tiny brushes specifically made for cleaning the lens) and also cleaned the install DVD. It still ejected the DVD but I persisted and eventually it installed successfully.
    I would keep trying.
If it still doesn't work you could try the firewire route but you need to read up on how to do it and any restrictions.
    Good luck

  • Late 2007 Macbook and Leopard Disk

    Hi,
Im trying to install Leopard on a late 2007 Macbook. I am using a original Leopard disk as I do not have copies of the original system disks to hand.
I assume this is because the Macbook shipped after Leopard and my leopard disk doesn't have the required drivers.
Does anyone know a work around?

You cannot use the install disks which came with another computer (if that is in fact what you are doing); you have to use a retail Leopard install set.
