G5 iMac + Airport Extreme = Fail?

I have been struggling to get my new Airport Extreme to work with my already existing and functioning internet. The DSL modem and the Airport unit don't seem to want to communicate with each other. After I have appeared to have everything set up correct and I click "update," it reads "This device and its network services will be temporarily unavailable." After all is said and done, it still doesn't work at all. I have tried everything I can think of to get everything in sync with each other including:
- Restarting Airport
- Plugging in modem to Airport THEN plugging in Airport (also tried reverse)
- Restarting Modem (repeatedly)
- Resetting Airport
- Updated Airport Utility
- Plugging the modem into both the Ethernet port AND the WAN port
I have an Airport Express which is seeming to work fine, but I want to use the Extreme as the primary router, not the Express. Any hints, tips or advice? Do I have a bogus router??? HELP!

Scooter, Welcome to the discussion area!
That is all you need to give your G5 iMac the ability to connect to 802.11b/g Wifi networks.

  • IMac,airport extreme router, IPad2

Before I brought the iPad2 home, I set up my airport extreme to work with my ISP and I could connect my iMac wirelessly via safari to the Internet and surf the web from anywhere in the house.  I brought the iPad2 home, and it immediately found the network. I typed in the password and it connected, no problem.  However, if I want to connect tog the Internet now with my iMac I must plug it in to the router, it won't work wirelessly.  Also, if I am connecting to the Internet via the IMac plugged into the router, I can't access Internet with the iPad2.  When I go into airport utility to see if there is an obvious change I should make, it indicates that the router settings don't need changing.  So, I know there is something I must change, but I don' t want to foul up the router settings, as I do have Internet access, but the network is not letting more than one device access at the same time.
Would appreciate some input as to what steps I might take to correct the problem.  I think it must be something very simple, but I haven't hit on it yet after several attempts.

    Theoretically possible using:
    System Preferences>Sharing>Internet Sharing
Choose the iMac wi-fi and configure a network name and password.
You may need to check the hotspot terms and conditions to check that it will allow more than one device/computer to connect to the internet. As you are probably aware AppleTV cannot access login screens for wi-fi hotspots only set normal local wi-fi settings.
Another option would be to run ethernet firect to AppleTV2 - if that's impractical consider a pair of mains powerline home networking plugs that can bridge the gap to give ethernet to a distant device in the house - check makes like Netgear, Devolo etc.

  • IMac + Airport extreme + airport express + iTunes = no music?

I bought an iMac in February with Airport Extreme. Wireless internet & wireless printing have been fine with this.
At the weekend I bought Airport Express so I could wirelessly play my iTunes through my stereo; I have connected my Express to my MD socket using a digital-optical to mini-toslink cable, but I get no sound from the stereo.
The Express & Extreme set-up & configured in the straightforward manner as you'd expect, so I don't think that's the source of my problems.
    I'm not a computer-whizz, but nor am I a complete div, but I'm sure it's a really straightforward fix I've overlooked.
    Please help?

Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) settings ...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
    Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • My Airport Extreme failed security test

    Hi,
I just purchased an Airport Extreme (802.11n) to replace my old Linksys router (so that I can have wifi). After I have everything installed, I went to Symantec's Security Check page and ShieldsUP! page to make sure my connection is secure.
    http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=10&pkj=ANL RPWFYJOKMFIDPMSV
    http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2
To my horror, Symantec says that one of my ports is OPEN (ICMP Ping), while all others are CLOSED. In my limited understanding, this is definitely not the most desirable situation--not as good as my old Linksys, whose ports are all reported as STEALTH. ShieldsUP! just said that I failed because of the open ICMP port.
    My questions are:
    1. Is this the best Airport Extreme can do?
    2. Am I safe?
    3. Can I change any settings to make my network more secure?
I can't find much info from Apples' documentation and the Support website.
    Thanks!
    Al

    Hi lancia,
I am not that worried about security between the Airport and my computers. As I understand it, that connection is pretty secure. What I am worried about is the security between the Airport and the Internet. Namely, whether the Airport can protect the computers behind it.
As the connecting point between my home network and the outside world, the Airport has what is called a Firewall to keep people from outside of my home network from accessing my computers. It is supposed to block all the ports except those that are in use by the computers so that outsiders cannot hack in. For each port there are three possible settings: Open, Closed, and Stealth. If a port is open, computers from outside can talk to my computer which is behind the Firewall (for example, web browser traffic typically goes through port 80). If a port is closed, Airport tells the outside computer that it is not taking any calls. If the port is set to stealth, the call is left unanswered, thus hiding my very existence from that computer.
Apple chooses to make Airport's Firewall to only close all the ports not in use, since that is sufficient for protection. But from what I have read about Internet security, it is best to set your Firewall to stealth. The theory being that, what the hacker does not know exists, he cannot hack.
It is beyond me why the Mac's own Firewall has a stealth setting (System Preferences...>Security>Firewall>Advanced...>Enable Stealth Mode), but the Airport, which is further in the front line, does not.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac / Airport Extreme

My new iMac has Airport Extreme. Currently I use the RJ45 jack to connect to my cable modem. I just purchased an Airport Express for the Airtunes feature. Can I enable Airport Extreme to link with the Express and still be wired to my cable modem? Or do I have to go completely wireless? When I go to the Airport utility on the iMac, everything is grayed out. I don't see anything in the manual about this, and I don't want to start changing network settings without knowing first. Thanks

Watch out for confusing terminology. "AirPort Extreme" is the name of one of Apple's AirPort base stations. Is that what you mean, or you mean that your iMac has high-speed Wi-Fi capability.
If the latter, if you want to use an AirPort Express, since it only have one Ethernet port, you'll have to connect that to your cable modem. That in turn means that any other connection (other than an audio connection to the Express) will have to be wireless.

  • Applecare for iMac - Airport Extreme registration

I have an iMac registered with Applecare, and I'm trying to register the same applecare with my Airport Extreme. Does anyone have any idea how to do it? I used the same activation code for iMac, but it won't let me register.
Thanks in advance for any help!

If you read the applecare agreement, you will find airport extreme, keyboard, and mouse etc. are covered automatically by iMac Applecare when you use these devices with the covered iMac. Anyways.. i got the answer from another forum, i actually don't need to register it online... Thanks all the same!

  • Airport Extreme Fails to mount/share disk

Recently I disconnected all users from my LaCie HD shared from my Apple Airport Extreme to back it up to another 1TB drive formatted as FAT32. I did this while directly connected to the MacbookPro.
    1) It appears that there is no easy disconnected way to cleanly unmount a disk from the extreme. I was forced when connecting the drive to the MacbokPro to repair both the disk and permissions. Is there a safe way to do this?? I really found this as an artifact to the second and for me personnaly larger problem.
    2) The drive now appears in the airport utility shared disks window as a 698GB disk, but I cannot get sharing to work under any circumstances. The Airport Utility will not otherwise recognize the disk. Both MAC and PC clients now (after having removed and replaced the disk) can now no longer see the base station as a "server". It gives a "not operational" error when using the BS/WAP name. When using the IP (internal address) it fails with a slightly different error (cannot be found).
I looked through the original 20 or so pages of posts trying to find something similar. I did not see anything.
    Any suggestions??

Like Todd, in the original post, I have:
    1. verified that connection between cable modem & comcast is fine by connecting both ThinkPad and PowerBook and both remain connected and are able to perform random downloads for hours on end.
    2. Wireless connectivity works fine for my two laptops as they both work with an airport express and a Linksys wireless access point & router.
    3. Hard reset teh Airport Extreme till I'm blue in the face.
    4. Already have firmware 5.7 installed, the AEBS is brand new.
    Symptoms are:
Both Thinkpad and Powerbook work fine after a power reset on the AEBS. But after an indeterminate amount of time -- anywhere from 15 minutes to three hours they fail to get beyond the AEBS out to the net.
It isn't the WiFi, because I can have one laptop computer connnected to the ethernet port and it fails get beyond the AEBS.
By simply restarting teh AEBS via the Airport Admin Utility or disconnecting power when the Airport Admin utility fails to connect to the AEBS, I can resume my work on the net.
It's not like I'm transferring large amounts of data, just doing casual surfing, so the error buffers should be overfilled.
It is that comcast is doing a regular expiration of my WAN IP address.
    any clues?
    any way to fix it?

  • Backup to USB disk on AirPort Extreme fails

I have been using Backup to save files from my MacBooc to a USB Disk connected to my AirPort Extreme. Since I've installed Snow Leopard this doesn't work any longer. Backup keeps saying that it is 'Waiting for volume AirPortDisk', although the requested volume is available. It is visible on my desktop and I can open it and browse the old backup incremental files.

  • When Canon MP460 is shut off, Airport Extreme fails to detect it!

There is no problem detecting the printer initially. However, if it gets turned off and on again, AE does not recognize it has a USB printer attached to it! The only solution I have is to restart the AE - then it realizes it has a printer attached. Any ideas about this one guys?? Thanks a bunch,

    Airport Extreme, Canon MP460

I have the same issue with a Canon i9900. Does not
recognize printer unless I unplug the USB cable after
    it is turned on.
Unplugging and plugging the USB cable back in does not help. The base station only seems to detect the printer if I restart it. I have no idea why turning the printer on and off would cause this to happen. Is there a more official way to submit bugs like this to apple?

  • Airport Extreme fails

Airport Extreme doesn't allow any access. Power connection lets the green light start followed by an instant yellow light. Even the quick yellow flashing doesn't work resetting the Airport Extreme. The Reset of the Speedport W920V doesn't help as adviced. It seems the AE is not working anymore.
If anybody knows a trick to bring it back working I'll be thankful for.
    Many Thanks

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default.  It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence.  Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.

  • Airport extreme on the fritz?  Need help

After 6 months, my airport extreme failed and went into flashing amber light mode. I did a hard reset and reconfigured everything and hooked back up. Green light is on and internet on my main computer (hooked up via ethernet cable and cable modem) is fine.
However, no other computers can connect to the wireless network anymore. All get errors. Now when i go into Airport Utility to try to diagnose the problem, the utility can't even locate the device (even though the device has green light). Error message says "an error occured while trying to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again."
I know I have a network connection because the computer is working on the internet.
I have tried multiple times to power everything down for 30 minutes or more and restart, with no luck.
    Any answers?

  • How do I connect Airport Extreme and Time Capsule to my new iMac so that AE is used for network and TC only used for Time Machine backup?

I didn't realize that Time Capsule will only support the print function of a wireless multifunction printer.  So I want to use Extreme for my network to have full use of my printer and use TC as the Time machine backup only.  How to I make the connections?

Thanks for your response and this is getting complicated but I just purchased a new iMac as well as the Airport TC.  I've had the Airport Extreme for a year or so.  The Airport Extreme worked perfectly with my old iMac wirelessly and I had all functions of my printer with no problems.  I was expecting the same with the TC.  But the instruction that came with TC say to connect the printer to the TC via USB...which I did.  And the print function worked perfectly but nothing else.  In researching I discovered that when wired that way the TC only supports the print function...not scan or fax or anything else.  I tried going wireless since my AE worked perfectly via wireless but I got no printer functions at all that way.  But I'm wondering also if I tried that during a time I was having other issues...I had to delete and re-add my printer which solved some other problems.  I may try that again...and see if I can get all print functions with just the TC connected
As far as connecting both your AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule on your network, we're not clear on exactly how you want to do this.  Will the AirPort Extreme connect to your modem using an Ethernet cable and the Time Capsule connect to the AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable?.......or......do you want the Time Capsule to connect to the network using wireless?
Well... first of all I would like not to have to use the AE at all...I would prefer using just my TC for network, all print functions and Time Machine backup if that's possible. My printer will not accept Ethernet connections (Canon MX512).
After failing at getting this to work, I decided I would try to use my AE for net and print functions and just use my TC for Time Machine backup.  I tried several different connection configurations with no success until finally I connected cable modem to my AE via Ethernet and went wireless with the AE and printer. but connected the AE to the TC via Ethernet and amazingly everything worked like a charm (for a while) and I was patting myself on the back for being so smart.  But now I find that the connection only lasts for a short time.  If I leave it for a while the TC goes invisible...or at least I see a message saying the Ethernet is unplugged...but it is not... and I lose internet connection even though I have a green light on my AE. So now I'm at a loss. I don't know why I keep losing network signal and why my system thinks the Ethernet is unplugged.
So... after all this...I figured I wasn't so smart after all and I must have things wired incorrectly.
So... it sounds like you are saying I should go back and try again to get my new TC to work as I want it to via wireless instead of connecting via USB...is that correct?  Could you tell me exactly how I should wire my equipment from cable modem to AE and/or TC to achieve net capability, full functions of my printer and Time Machine backup...
    Thanks...

  • TS1253 i have airport extreme, and printer works with my imac, but not with my mac book pro??

i tried setting up the printer under my wireless network only, and using the printer information, tried both and nothing works, my imac's same settings for the printer, and just cant get it to work.
i am ussing airport extreme, and it shows printer conecting etc. but then it says not programed correctly and it fails.
i dont know what else to try, i have followed every step on the manual, and nothing works..
    someone help me

Could you open System Profiler on the iMac and the MBPro and select the Printers entry. Then in the top right pane you can select the printers entry and the bottom right pane will show information about your setup. Can you copy this information from both Mac's and paste back here.

  • IMac cannot locate airport extreme

I have lost my internet connection because my iMac suddently fails to locate the airport extreme, but if I run Windows 7 under Parallel on the same iMac, I can connect to the internet. I think I have messed up some of the files. I will appreciate any help. Thanks.

First I'd unplug the AirPort Extreme for 15 minutes to see if that helps.  If not, try a "factory default reset" of the Extreme.

  • Airport extreme drops out on imac, but not on powerbook....

    Hi
    Here's what i have running.
A 4 year old powerbook which always connects just fine to the internet, with no dropping of the signal.
A new imac with a airport extreme built in. It regularly just drops the internet connection, even though the internet is seen perfectly by the other machine.
Router is a standard netgear router virgin media provide.
Periodically, and some days it will be totally fine, but mostly on the weekends (like now) the signal on the imac just drops out (from perfect 4 bars, to none) and i lose access to the internet on this machine (very annoying when you are trying to talk to someone on skype!). after some time it reappears, only to drop out again.
I have reset the modem to automatically select a wireless channel, but that seems to have done nothing. So following the advise on other chats here, i set the channel to 10. However the problem remains. I thought, well, maybe its the wireless phone, or the microwave, but these do not seem to affect the internet connection to the powerbook g4. The software updater for the "airport utility" claims it is up to date.
And now i am totally lost as to what to do! Any suggestions? Thanks

I have this very same issue. Reproducable on 2 laptops (ibook and powerbook), both 10.4.3, to 2 separate ftp servers.
    Transmit fails as well.
Fetch, however, seems to work just fine. Does Fetch not use the underlying ftp command line app?
Transferring small files (under 1k) seems to work though.
The message I get is as follows:
421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed
Timesout for 10-20 seconds, then I get the message. Setting the transfer mode to "binary" manually seems to correct the issue. But this won't work for what I'm doing (Dreamweaver, which must use the command line ftp?).
Attempting to ftp the same files from my local Solaris and Linux servers seems to work just fine.
    sftp works.
    Apple? Is ftp broken?
