G5 iMac and HP Laptop web comms.

I'm getting a G5 iMac this week and want to know how i can keep in touch with home over the net when i'm away with my HP Laptop. I need recommendations of Chat & webcam applications that i can use Windows XP at one end and OS X at the other. I've already got an iSight camera for the iMac.
Thanks

I have an IMAC and a Laptop.   Adobe Illustrator was originally on an old computer.  I signed out of that .  Illustrator worked until I took my IMAC into the shop to be repaired.  Now I am getting the Can't sign in message.   It worked this afternoon after I contacted support and now it is not opening again.

Can I run time capsule on both my Imac and pc laptops?

Depends on what you mean by "run".  Both the Mac and PC could connect using either wireless or Ethernet.
The iMac could backup automatically using Time Machine over wireless or Ethernet.
Genie TimeLine Pro might be able to backup the PC automatically, but you would need to check on this with the Genie folks to confirm.

  • I bought a new iMac, and i have CC on my old iMac and my laptop. since i'm only authorized to use 2 computers, how do i transfer the license off of my old cdesktop ompuetr to my new one

how do i transfer a cc license from my old desktop iMac to my new one? i use cc on my laptop as well

    Hi Rose,
You just have to run one of the CC applications on your old iMac and do a "sign out" (on windows this is in the e.g. Photoshop "Help" menu, can't remember for Mac)...which warns you that you can't use CC apps on that computer anymore.
Then install CC on your new iMac and log in to it. You will then have to use the CC app to install photoshop etc on your new iMac.

  • If I own a desktop iMac and a laptop MacBook Air, do I need to purchase Lion for each of them?

If I own a desktop iMac and a MacBook Air, do I need to purchase Lion for each of them?

No. You can install Lion on all machines under your control. BTW, to avoid wasting bandwidth, time, and electricity, when you first DL Lion, don't install it, quit the installer, and copy the Install Mac OS X Lion.app which is DL'd to /Applications to another location. The stupid, inane installer deletes itself as part of its installation process. Then, copy the saved version to the other machines. Do note that if you move the installer app from /Applications, you can install it, and it won't be deleted.

  • IMac and Windows Laptop on the Same Wi-Fi Network?

First I just wanted to thank all those who replied to my previous (and first ever) post advising on the best way to set up a wireless home netwrok to share a DSL connection.
In the end I decided against buying an Apple AirPort base station, and bought a third party modem-router-wireless access point (a Speedtouch 580).
I set the 580 up to send the internet conncetion out on the Wi-Fi network, and was able to connect my Windows laptop (with a Speedtouch 110g wirelss card) to the Wi-Fi network and gain internet access no problem! I never thought it could be that easy, so was ecstatic! I even managed to have my Centrino laptop connect to the network and share the internet connection.
Then it came to my iMac G5 (I have AirPort Extreme built in). I turned the airport on and scanned for networks. When I first found my network I couldn't connect, so changed the router's security to WEP from WPA. Now, I still don't know how my iMac connected to the Wi-Fi network, but when I came back to it after having walked away in despair, it was simply connected!
My problem now is that I don't seem to be able to connect both a Windows PC and my Mac to the Wi-Fi network at the same time. Why might this be?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

You have not configured your wireless router correctly.
Without seeing the configuration it is very difficult to ascertain what the specific problem might be.
    Reset the router and re-configure.
You need to configure your router to share a single IP address (NAT) in order to use your DSL connection with more than one client.

  • IMac and XP2 Laptop connect to internet BUT XP2 PC does not

I continually get searching for network on the PC( hubby's machine)
When I approached someone for help getting this working they asked me if the PC was associated with the Airport Express so I need help
1 with how do I find that out I looked on the Airport utility but I couldn't find any tab that would show me.
We have a D-link router modem connected by Ethernet cable
The PC has a Belkin Network card installed and our airport express settings are 802.11g ( compatible.)
When I tried using a command prompt on the windows machine
ipconfig/all I get a 169 address which I know means it cannot find a 192. address so allocates that but is not a workable address.
I then tried ipconfig/renew and received an error message
Renewing interface Wireless Network connection4 : unable to contact DHCP Server
    Request timed out.
Can anyone help out here please.
It all worked fine until I secured the network with a WEP key. and I have quadruple checked the network key is the same on all three machines.
At one point every time Hubby fired up his PC it changed the WEP Password automatically so nothing could access the internet but I fixed that problem.
Not sure what other information I can give you but no doubt have left something out.
    Thanks for any help

    Shirley

Ok, thanks. I managed to download and read the DSL 300T User's Guide so I am now familiar with this unit.
Let's start by addressing the WEP security and the password that you are providing to your husband's PC. Some non-AirPort clients have trouble connecting to AirPort when WEP is used. In almost all cases, this can be rectified in one of three ways: 1) Provide non-AirPort users with the Equivalent Network Password, 2) Switch to using WPA/WPA2 for wireless encryption, or 3) Disabling encryption all together (not recommended).
If you need to use WEP, then please review the following Apple Tech Support article to see how you can determine the Equivalent Network Password: AirPort Extreme: Getting an equivalent network password

  • Can my CC account be installed on both my iMac and my laptop so that I can run software on both?

    Hi all,
I'm sure this is a simple answer, but I have not found any thing on it yet.

  • I am moving my US iMac and macbook pro to Ireland.  Where can I get the right power cords

I am moving to Ireland.  I have several mac products.  I have 2 iMac, and 3 laptops, plus all the other "fun" apple stuff.  Apple TV, iPad, iPods, phones)
I need to get a power supply for both the iMacs and MacBooks.  Any suggestions, I can't seem to find them on line at the apple website.

    Irelandbound wrote:
thank you, I have the adaptors so glad that would work.  I just heard adaptors burn out often.  So Just thought for my main iMac computer, a plug would be best.  I will get one once I move.
Any other suggestions or things I should know about apple products in Ireland.  I know there are no Apple stores there.
An adaptor doesn't burn out. It merely serves as a means to connect the power prongs on your device to the power supply.
I believe you are thinking of a transformer, which you do not need. A transformer converts one voltage to another.
You don't need to do that as the power supply of modern electronics can take almost any worldwide voltage.
Look at the label on the device. It should indicate the input power acceptable of 100-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz.
Additionally, I found the adapters cheaper in the UK than I found them in the US. They were available in most supermarket chains. I wasn't in Ireland, so I can't say one way or the other.
If you have something that doesn't have that input power spec, it would require a transformer.
On other items like electric clocks or things with motors, you can connect them up to a transformer and the voltage will be correct, but the frequency may not. For clocks, that will cause them to not keep time well. For motors, they will burn out.

  • Mid 2010 iMac and PC...

Hello all, I know this is a Mac forum but can't seem to find the answer anywhere else. I have an iMac 27" that im interested in sharing the screen with a pc laptop using the mini displayport. My iMac is mid 2010 with mini displayport and PC has mini displayport out. I've seen discussions surrounding the Kanex SnapX 2x Switcher being used between 2 Macs. Would anyone know if this product works with an iMac and PC laptop?
    Thanks in advance!

What you are attempting is called Target Display Mode, please very carefully read Apple's FAQ about the subject. Your 2010 iMac may be able to work with your PC. The article is located at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924

  • How to share a HP Laserjet between a iMac and a PC Laptop

I have been sharing a HP Laserjet 1200 between my iMac and a Toshiba Satellite laptop for years by using the USB port for the iMac, and using the parallel port for the PC. This has worked great for years. I've just purchased a new laptop, and it no longer has a parallel port. Is there a way for me to still connect the printer to both computers? I also have a Color LaserJet 2600n, does the 'n' means wireless? The 2600n is only connected to the iMac, being I don't use it much. Most of my printing comes off the Laserjet 1200, for both computers and would really like to keep it like that. I've also just purchased Snow Leopard for the iMac, just haven't gotten a chance to install it yet. Upgrading one machine at a time. First I need to print from both machines. Any help would be appreciate it! Thank you.

    Hi Barney,
Finally got a chance to download Bonjour for Windows to my laptop late last night, and after a few tries (to get the correct driver for that old HP1200...), it worked! The original driver disc wouldn't work, guess it was just too old. But was able to get one from HP web site. Anyway, thank you so very much. Though I have to make sure the Mac is on when I want to print from the laptop, as the printers are on sharing, they're right next to each other and I tend to work off both at the same time anyway, so it's not a big deal. Sometimes over the weekend, I will play with the wires some more to do what you and Bruce suggested, and make sure the mac and the 2600 is connected via Ethernet, not USB. Right now the 1200 is connected directly to the Netgear, but doesn't seem to work as a server. Oh well. Again, thank you for your suggestions. It was of great help!

  • Wireless connection between cable imac and laptop Windows,

This should be an easy question so here goes. I currently have an Imac with a cable connection. I plan to buy a Windows laptop within the next week. I want to be able to access the internet with the laptop from another room. There are airports and routers from Apple and wireless network cards for Windows. I'm confused. What's the simplest way for my Mac to wirlessly connect to the Window's laptop so that I can access the web from another room?

    1. Your new laptop needs to have a wireless card.
    2. You then need a wireless router with several lan ports.
The iMac will connect to the router via ethernet cable to one of the lan ports and your laptop should connect via the wireless connection. There are many wireless routers out there that will do the job. Check out the Linksys wrt54g. make sure your laptop comes with a wireless card built it.

  • Hard drive died on iMac and getting replacement.  I have all photos backed up on my iPad 3, which was synced directly to the dead iMac's iTunes.  How can I move them back to my laptop and eventually to the repaired iMac?

I'd like to restore photos from my iPad3 to the iMac once I have a new drive. I had uploaded them directly from the iMac onto the IPad via iTunes.   That iTunes was wiped out in the drive failure.  In the meantime I wanted to move the photos to my MacBook Pro, but iTunes tells me they belong to another iTunes (mine also but was on the iMac) and syncing will erase the content on the iPad.  Moved all photos (4000+) to an album in iPhoto on the iPad, but iPhoto on the MacBook doesn't see the album-  It only see photos directly taken on the iPad. I seem to be caught in an owenership issue between my photos, my computers, and permissions due to the dirve failure.
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
    Todd

Photos synced to an iDevice are different from ones taken by the device's camera.
Difference between camera roll, photo stream, and photo library - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3846502
You will need to use a third party utility to try to recover them as it is assumed that if you transferred them from your computer  you alredy have the original files on the computer and a backup of the computer itself (do not rely upon your iPad as a backup).  Furthermore, the photos transferred to your iPad have reduced quality so they are not as good as the originals.
Here's my old list of utilities (this list was really done for music rescue so make sure they do photos too):
Note: The information below hasn't been updated since early 2013.
Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):
