G5 iMac will not run programs

Hello again Guys, I'm back......  Just a quick note, Thanks to all who have offered me advice over my past issues.  I have a new one for you.  I recently picked up a G5 20 inch iMac  1.8 PPC  1.5 ram (gonna go pick up another gig today.  Nothing out of the ordinary.  I actually really like this thing.  Anyways, when I picked it up, it was supposed to have 10.5.8 on it and it only has 10.4.11  No real biggie just need to get a hold of a 10.5 disc.  Anyways, here is the issue.  Programs will not open.  If it is a preinstalled program, it runs fine.  If it is a program that I have downloaded, it will not run.  Case in point, I use FILEZILLA ALOT.  I downloaded the PPC version, go to open it, and the icon pops up in the dock, then closes with nothing else.  No crash report, no bug no nothing.  Pops up in the dock then disappears.  Does this with any program that I download.  I already repaired permissions to no avail.....  any ideas?
Thanks far in advance

You can first try running Disk Utility and using Repair Disk Permissions (on the First Aid tab).
Since that iMac came with the system already installed and an existing user account, I would create a new admin user account (in System Preferences Accounts pane).  Make sure it is administrator, not standard.  Log out and log in to the new account.  Try the same thing in that account to see if the problem recurs.
When you get your Leopard installation disc, I would erase the internal drive and install a clean system.  Whether the above helps or not (with the current system), a brand new system should resolve the problem.

  • IMac will not run OS X

This is so weird. I have an iMac DV Special Edition model that cannot boot into OS X 10.4. It has 512MB of ram and a 10GB HD. It will show the Apple logo but before the spinning wheel appears, a black box appears over the apple and it shuts off. I can run Mac OS 9.2.1 no problem. I have updated the firmware to 4.1.9 and it still doesn't want to boot. I even put the Hard Drive in another iMac and it booted no problem.Any help would be great. Thanks!

Where did that particular Tiger (10.4) installation come from, because it sounds like it was already installed (by another Mac) on the drive before you put it into the G3 iMac?
If the Mac that performed the installation was an Intel Mac, it will not work. Tiger is not universal, so the Intel and PowerPC installations are different. If the installation was done on a PowerPC Mac, that should not be a problem.
The startup disk setting is stored in PRAM, so you should try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If it is booting 9.2.1 from the same drive, the following master/slave advice is probably not relevant, but... Make sure the jumpers on the drive are set to Master. Some drives have more than one Master setting. If that is the case, it needs to be set for +Master with slave drive+ and NOT +Master single+. The optical drive shares the IDE bus and is usually the slave drive.
However, there may be cases where the optical drive is set to Master for some reason. Some of those OEM drives have a switch on the back end for the master/slave setting. If the optical drive is a third-party replacement, they are often hardwired to the Master setting. So you may want to try setting the hard drive to Slave to see if that makes a difference. As long as one drive is master and the other drive is slave, it should work fine.

  • IMac will not run Pro Tools 9 - Some will not run CS5.5 Production Premium and some will?

So i have 6 imacs in my computer lab at this time - I recently created a new image for all of our lab computers using snow leopard OS, Pro Tools 9.0, and Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium - this image works fine on our MacPro's and Pro Tools has no problems opening or CS5.5, but when I imaged the same image onto the imacs - CS5.5 only works on two of the machines and Pro Tools 9.0 will not open on any imac ( i keep getting the message "Can not find playback device: I thought you didnt need one for Pro Tools 9?) and i cant figure out why.  The imacs that have problems with CS5.5 and Pro Tools are the 20" early 2006 versions, and the imacs that run CS5.5 but not Pro Tools are 20" late 2006 versions.  Are they just too old?  Why would it let me image on the late 2006 version of imac but not the early 2006?  Do i need to create an image on the imac itself and then farm it out to the others?
    Thanks for your comments,
    Kyle

I know this is a very late answer for you, but it may help others out.
Try holding down the "N" key on your keyboard while loading the Pro Tools application.
This will eventually open up a dialog box with a drop down menu for selecting your interface.
In the case where you're not using an interface (like the lab), within this dialog box, just select Built-in Output and plug in your headphones in the back of the iMac.
I'm running several rooms with iMacs and PTLE 9.0.6 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and this is the only hiccup I've run into. Hopefully, holding down the "N" key works for you.

  • Imac 13,2 with 3 RAM chips instead of 4 RAM Chips. Is there any hard data supporting the fact that the iMac will not run optimally with only 3 chips versus 4?

I have a imac 13,2 with 3 of the 4 memory(RAM) slots filled. Two with 4gb chips and one with an 8gb chip. Is there any reports or statistics to support using matching pairs(4 chips) of ram versus running 3 chips? Is the machine running optimally w/3 chips? Or does it not matter with these newer imacs as each RAM slot is fully iundependent of each other therefore getting the most out of each chip no matter if 3 slots are filled or 4 slots are filled?
    Thanks for any reponses.

There were some models which would not boot at all if a certain slot was not occuplied:

I suggest that you clone your current drive with 10.6.8 to an external drive. If you have any issues after upgrading to Mavericks, you can boot back into 10.6.8.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone. If you need help creating your clone, let us know.

  • TS1587 I tried everything, except for reinstalling the SO-DIMM memory modules. Still, my iMac will not wake up. Turning it on you can hear the fan run, but the display stays dark. Any ideas what to do? Thanks Maja

My iMac won't start up, or wake from sleep.  I've tried everything, except for reinstalling the SO-DIMM memory modules. Still, my iMac will not wake up.  Turning it on, you can hear the fan run, but the display stays dark.  Any ideas what to do?  Thanks!

    Mac doesn't boot
Can you hear the fans and hard drive and see the white boot screen? Flashing question mark? The circle just runs and nothing happens? Only black screen and nothing else? These can be very helpful to diagnose the source of the problem. [1]
Flashing question mark [2]: This is usually a sign of a failed hard drive. This indicates that boot up volume can not be found.
Black screen: This is usually a sign of a failed logic board. There is no single reason for this and this may be caused by failed GPU, screen, CPU or RAM.
Circle of death/no circle/blue screen: This is usually a sign of a hard drive failure. This may NOT be a dead hard drive, just broken permissions or something
Gray screen/Apple logo/spinning gear or globe/prohibitory sign/folder with flashing question mark [3]: This could be a sign of faulty hardware but more likely a software issue, i.e. broken permissions, failed software update, etc.
    [edit]
    What to do
First, hold down the option key (also known as the alt key) just after you've pressed the power button. This should show all the available options to boot from, so if you have Windows installed through Bootcamp or a disk in your SuperDrive, you should be able to see them along with your OS X drive/partition. Select the OS X partition with arrow keys and press enter. Startup key combinations
If that doesn't help continue doing the steps from below:
    1. SMC reset [4]. Shut down and unplug all cables including power cord for at least 30 seconds and then plug in power cord and keyboard/mouse.
    2. PRAM reset [5]. Hold down option, command, P and R while booting. Start it when you hear the sound and don't let go before it reboots.
    3. Safe boot [6]. Hold down shift while booting to boot into safe mode. If this works, open Disk Utility from Utilities and repair your permissions and verify the disk
    4. Hardware test [7]. Insert the install disk (disk 1 in Mac which shipped with OS X 10.5.4 or earlier, disk 2 if shipped with OS X 10.5.5 or newer) and hold down "D" before the grey boot screen opens. Follow on screen instructions
    5. Boot from install disk. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac. Hold C while booting. Select Disk Utility from top bar and repair permissions and verify the disk. Reboot normally and see if it works now.
    6. Boot from another Mac (Firewire target disk mode). Connect the machines with a Firewire cable. Power on your Mac and press T. Select the other Mac's hard drive. Download the current OS X combo update. Run the combo update installer and select the drive that won't boot as the destination.
    7. "Repair" OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and reinstall OS X. This should NOT erase any data, just replaces the system files which may have caused your booting problem. Now install the latest combo update for OS X and repair permissions on your drive with Disk Utility.
7.1. Install OS X into an external hard drive and then boot from it [8] and try to copy your data from the hard drive before proceeding. If you have done a backup recently, you don't have to do this.
    8. Restore OS X from Time Machine backup. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac and choose the Time Machine restore option. This step will lose any changes made since your last backup but the system and your data will be put back to exactly as it was on that date.
8.1 Reinstall OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and select Disk Utility again. Now erase the whole hard drive and install OS X again. If you had a Time Machine backup and step 7 worked you don't have to do this.

Program runs in win 7-64 Pro BUT will not run in win 7 home or vista.
I'm testing 32bit software that will run in 7-64 Pro but will not in win 7 home premium or vista.
The 7-64 Pro machine is NOT running the program in XP mode although is is being run as admin. The 7 home premium and vista beta testers have tried every work around/mode, admin mode, and anti-virus exception. I've run process explorer & WinMerge to evaluate
the differences between os operations & dlls loaded but am unable to find the OS issue.
Currently 2-win7-64 machines, 1 vista machine and 1 win 7 machine had no issues with the program as it started up and ran immediately.
After 3 beta's 30 hours of testing & 50 of my own, I believe I've narrowed the issue down to the win 7 home premium and vista os's.
Can anyone here suggest other ways to further narrow it down so as to provide functionality on all 3 os's?

You must provide the exact name and version of the software for anyone to attempt to answer your question.  Primarily the functionality of any software is entirely dependent on what platforms the publisher intended the software to run on.

  • 12-month old iMac running Mavericks will not run Yosemite

I have an iMac 21.5", bought new in September 2013 and currently running Mavericks with no problem. The OS is on the internal Mac HDD while Time Machine is on an external HDD. Previous OS updates have installed OK.
Yosemite however will not run. After installation I can log in with no problem and all seems well -- the first time.  All attempts to log in after the first produce the Apple logo and progress bar, but the bar advances only about one third of the way and hangs up, even when left for an hour or more. Nothing at all can move it -- all I can do is reboot by powering off/on. No login appears, just -- the logo and progress bar, which starts to run then stops as before.
If I reinstall Yosemite then I get one login as before, followed by the same failure -- I have now re-installed three times.
I have tried rolling back to earlier (pre-Mavericks) OS versions on Time Machine before installing Yosemite -- same result.
Right now I am back on the previous Mavericks.  All is OK and I can live without Yosemite, but I am becoming concerned for future-proofing my apps. Newer versions, for Yosemite, are not going to run.
Any help would be appreciated please.
    Best wishes to all.

Sadly it did not last. Yesterday it again froze on login and this time Safe Boot got me nowhere.
No doubt if I carry on experimenting I can sort it out,  but I can longer justify the long breaks from my work. I have rolled back via Time Machine to my last Mavericks-based save, and there it stays until someone at Apple gets to grips with Yosemite. Or replaces it, which I expect won't be long . . .
It just is not good enough to tell the consumer that  they must accept bugs with a new release, or that it's all their own, or their system's fault  or that they should get help from a support forum -- any clerk should be able to sit down and just use it. If a machine was running OK with an existing OS,  then it should seamlessly switch to the new without calling for a Masters in IT to figure it out. No ifs or buts. We pay  a premium price for a Mac and deserve better than this from Apple.
From my standpoint, Yosemite is without doubt the worst beast of an OS -- from any source -- that it has ever been my misfortune to encounter. This is my third Mac over the years, and at this rate it's my last -- for all Microsoft's failings, I have never encountered anything like this with Windows.

I deactivated Photoshop CC on my Mac Mini and downloaded PS CC on my MacBook 1.1. I didn't realize the program will not run on MB 1.1. I uninstalled the app on the MacBook. I tried to reactivate on my Mac Mini and it tells me I already have the program loaded on two computers. How do I solve the problem?

The activation server shows that it is now activated on two computer, it has been deactivated once .
When you install it on the third computer or for the third time & when you to activate it, if it installed & activated already twice, there will be an option of deactivating it from the previous computers, please click on that.(To deactivate from preinstalled machine, Open any Adobe CC application > Help Menu > Signout.)
Next it will allow you to activate on your new machine,
Now you can go back to your first computer, log out & log back in of Desktopp CC App, launch any product, if there is any product to buy, in that prompt there will be an option to " license the software", please click on that & sign in.
It will reactivate the CC on the first machine.
You have already deactivated it from one machine, hence you can activate it on third computer.

  • No matter what I do, I cannot get Firefox to run Java correctly. I've deleted the cache, etc., etc., but my school programs will not run on Firefox.

Firefox (v. 18.0.1) will not run my school programs any more since the Java scare. It also is choking at running screencast-o-matic.
And this is happening on both my computers not just one.
I have emptied Java cache, emptied the browser caches, downloaded the latest Java, Reinstalled it. Cleared caches again, etc., etc., etc.
Firefox will not run Java and I have to use IE which is the only browser that I have gotten the scripts to function so that I can use my programs.

Been there done that. Actually I have even install a fresh Firefox on virgin win8 64-bit laptop (without synchronising to my firefox in general) with the absolutely latest Java - didn't help either. And my test page is not the only one, but as I did this myself I know exactly the contents.
Since then my Firefox is in sync... well more or less as it seems it only sync some ways but that is another matter... but at least most of my stuff is back in place.
What I know is that the egg.html takes forever to load, and that the java part never shows. I think that this goes for most Java places, but I do remember that it was not always the case. Right now even the Oracle test page can't find Java, and I know it could at some point. Reinstalling tells me I already got Java, so it is there, likewise it is active in the plugin window. But some parameter some where must have gone haywire.
