G5 is stuck.  After a Safari update, couldn't turn it off or "re-start".

After downloading an update for Safari, it requires a re-start. Wouldn't do it -- ie, couldn't turn off the iMac or drag down to "restart"... so, I unplugged it and waited. No luck -- tried all the normal small things, then saw on System Preferences a place to click on restart from "start-up disk" ---but, it had a question mark on it -- did it anyway and now it's WORSE - A small world icon in a square in the middle of the screen blinking as I turn it back on -- nothing else.... just that!!!

HI,
Unfortunately, it sounds like the startup disk is failing or has failed. Try booting from your install disc.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*

Would this not make my privacy vulnerable?

With iOS 7 on the iPad, you turn Private  Browsing on and off by tapping the URL field.  The screen that  opens up has your bookmarks on it.  In the bottom left corner is a hot button marked 'PRIVATE'.  Tap on the word 'PRIVATE' to turn private browsing on or off.  Yeah, there aren't any instructions anywhere that I can find to do this, and if you follow Yahoo's instructions, they don't work.  This doesn't happen with the previous Apple OS, and you can restore your iPad to the older OS.

I don't recognize this pop up.  What are the options in the gear dropdown- right side of your image.
You can open a temporary guest account to see if the problem persist in this environment.  If no than it is your user account.
Try a safeboot and test to load only system apps no 3rd party.

If the pop is gone I suspect third party software interference.

  • Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update (Couldn't fix it)

    Hi there,
I also have been experiencing some problems after running Software Update (Security update + Java) a couple of days ago. Similarly to Jandaf (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9000023) I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. Based on the information provided in this forum I have tried some procedures which didn't solved my problem so far. Below I describe I have tried:
    1) I have booted using the installation DVD and run the disk utility. When performing the First Aid/Verify Disk I found some errors ('Invalid node structure'). But I couldn't fix the problem using disk repair (same problem 'Invalid node structure' 'Volume check failed'.
    2) I also tried to boot in single user mode (command + s) to run fsck -fy. It didn't work. I got the following message (last 4 lines):
    CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: -s
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: booting in single user .. do not match
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyboard" has no kernel dependency.
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCEventDriver" has no kernel dependency.
    3) When trying to boot in safe mode. I got a grey screen with the following message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button".
    4) I also tried to 'Archieve & Instal'. Again no success. After reading the DVD the action is terminated because some errors (does not specify).
    5) I also tried the 'German Medicine' (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8728797#8728797) (i.e. Connect the 'problematic MacBook' to my old G4 via firewire and reinstall the 2009-001 update). Again no success. The G4 cannot mount the MacBook hardrive.
I don't know what to do any more.
    A) Can I resuscitate my old system? If yes how?
    B) If not, can I at least save the data I have in my old HD?
    C) Is it possible to format and reinstall the OS or is this this computer doomed?
Apologies for writing so many questions but I'm really freaking out!
    Thank you.
    B.

    Hi BDAqua,
I did as you said and got a firewire backup drive (Seagate - FreeAgent Desk 500GB). I tried to make a carbon copy of HD but it seems that the copy had some problems. Below I report both the CCC and console logs:

  • Error connecting to Version Cue after installing Safari update 3.1.1!

I'm having trouble restarting the Version Cue server. It was running just fine before my Mac (OSX 10.4.11) restarted after installing the Safari 3.1.1 update this morning. This is the error message I receive when attempting to start VC:
Version Cue CS3 could not be started.
Please check the Version Cue CS3 logs.
So I checked the logs by browsing through the Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe VersionCue/Server/logs
Below, please find the chunk of information from the log where the problem began. I'm not saavy at all with this - but I do see in the log something about mDNS and after dealing with this problem all morning, I caught a bit of talk in other forums about this particular Safari update changing your DNS settings. Is this related? If it is, what should I do? If it isn't, what should I do?

Jasker - Thanks you for trying to help, but it didn't work. I followed your directions. Then I attempted to restart the Version Cue server and a Safari browser opened and pointed to http://localhost:3703/ with the message "Safari cant connect to the server.
Safari cant open the page http://localhost:3703/ because it could not connect to the server localhost."
I just want it to start up again so I can properly retrieve all of our projects! Even if I can get it back up, I don't think I will use Version Cue the way we used to, now that I know how unreliable it can be.
Can anyone at least offer advice on how to salvage shared projects (created and maintained by 2 different users) from the Version Cue server when it's offline?

  • IMac won't restart after latest Safari update.

I just downloaded the latest Safari update (5.1.2) on my iMac (27", i7, latest Snow leopard).  The download (via software update) and install went smooth but when asked to restart, it hangs up at the gray screen...after the blue screen/start up chime, but before the apple logo appears. I tried shutting down and rebooting but it keeps hanging at the same place.
Thank you in advance for any successful solutions!
    Kind regards,

    Hi all,
    Thank you for the replies...
I did manage to solve the problem right away by following the instructions offered by Apple:  Remove all USB cables, then do a hard reboot.  Then to isolate the cable causing the problem, plug in one at a time and reboot until the problem happens again.  In my case, the issue was caused by a Flip Camera that was plugged into a USB hub.
I hope this helps those with a similar problem.
    Regards,
    Mark

  • Gmail not loading after latest Safari update - the one with the Top Sites

After the latest Safari update - the one including the Top Sites feature - I can no longer open any messages in on gmail - it tells me that some of the features of gmail cannot be loaded due to problems with my connections. I can use other sites without any trouble, so I think that my connection is good. Also, when I try to use the older version of gmail, this doesn't work either. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Please help - this is very frustrating... Thanks in advance to everyone who will reply and offer an explanation and a possible solution.

    Hi
I have a GoogleUpdateSofware folder which contains GoogleUpdateSoftware bundle and a folder named Ticket Store. Can this be causing the problem?
Possible. One way to test is to go to the Finder. There, drag the Google folder to the desktop, then restart Safari. If that doesn't resolve the problem, return that folder to its original location. Then, try Safari from another User Account.
If necessary, you can create a User Account in System Preferences>Accounts. Log on to the other account and open Safari. If gmail works there, then the problem is specific to your regular user account. In that case, log-in to your regular user account. There, open Safari. Safari Menu>Reset Safari. Select "empty cache", and "clear history", then select "reset". Restart Safari and try gmail.
If it doesn't work in the other user account, then the problem is system-wide. If that's the case I'll post suggestions after you let me know what you discovered.

  • Molasses slow after security & safari updates

After 2 days of my own trial and error, I checked the boards and discovered I am far from alone in these problems. I tried entering the DNS addresses suggested by BDAqua but that has helped only minimally (that may be of little surprise, though, because I connect to the internet with a USB wireless Novotel modem, not a router). Nothing else about my system has changed. As it happens, because of suddenly stuttering video feeds a few days ago -- which led me to do this "optimizing" (or so I'd hoped!) -- I HAD repaired Disk Permissions and Verified Disc, as well as performing my regular system maintenance with ONYX both before & after but it wasn't until I began reading all the posts by all the frustrated people that I had ever seen in print that those operations were considered basic protocol when installing updates of any sort. I do backup everything compulsively (file backup though, not clone) so haven't lost anything data-wise but would prefer to avoid having to do a clean OS reinstall, then reinstall all of my many huge professional apps, and then reconfigure all the prefs and customizations of everything to get them back "just so" exactly as I like. Of course, I've rebooted after each fix step and also shut down completely several times to let my MBP remain off for many hours. I guess I'm a little luckier than some other posters because, aside from my browsers (Safari, which I favor, and Firefox) & general Finder operations, no other applications seem to be affected.
The symptoms are that new windows/tabs load at 15bps -- sometimes the loading indicator spinning on endlessly without any items appearing on page -- and downloading occurs at same ridiculous transfer rate although Internet Connect confirms that I'm connected at the usual 1843200bps. This happens on the simplest of pages (each Apple Discussion page takes a full 5 minutes to load, when they do actually load completely). The spinning rainbow pinwheel-o-doom occurs when switching between open windows/tabs in browser or Finder or when moving from Finder to Browser and back again.
    Any ideas?
As an aside, in response to several other threads, I herewith offer my Two Cents: After many years of problems happening after applying various updates, I've become wary (not to mention, jaded) and thus only perform local system maintenance with trusted Tools and Utilities, avoiding software updates, as long as my system is running successfully. When I do encounter other problems, and Updates have recently been released that promise to fix glitches and increase overall stability, I use System Updater, to avoid possibly selecting an incorrect patch version. Furthermore, I totally agree with the frustrations expressed in one related post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8071700&#8071700), and was heartened to find several supporters of the originator at the end of the very lengthy thread. I agree that if certain basics are germane to the success of the Update process each and every time, that the updaters ought to have fix/verify built right in. Many inexperienced home users blindly agree to every update Apple or installed third-party developer suggests, they also tend to be the people who feel too intimidated to search these discussions, if they even know they exist at all. I love Apple dearly and agree that Tiger is an extremely stable OS but all the OSX versions have been much more complex to learn to troubleshoot through day-to-day use than the OS9 environments. Gone are the days when the average user felt secure trashing specific Preference files or replacing a single Extension with a clean version -- and gone are the days when one could select from three OS install options, one of which performed a less invasive basic Apple-OS-item-only install. Given that OSX versions just get increasingly bulky and confusing to the uninitiated, I believe it does fall on Apple to build into update/patch scripts ALL the required steps to ensure a fully automated process, or to at least provide interactive "steps" where a user can choose "OK" (as in, I've already done this) or "Open For Me" as in the Help scripts, prior to any patch/update script running itself.

Thanks, BDAqua! Glad you're here for us!
I do have my Onyx configured to dump Browser Caches, along with those for Fonts, System, and Kernel. Also, it is my normal procedure, when I've been surfing for hours, visiting many sites and/or streaming many videos, to use the Safari menu to periodically clear the Browser Cache myself (I find it prevents Safari from getting sluggish) as well as to clean out my cookies often. If you recommend AppleJack over Onyx, however, I will certainly give that a try. Any other suggestions?
I NEVER used to get "buffering video" issues -- not since I migrated from my old cpu and dial-up modem, anyway -- but since the Security Update and Safari Upgrade, I get between 90-200 seconds of uninterrupted video before having to wait an equal or greater amount of time for it to catch up. This is improved only a small bit by letting the whole stream load before playing and it's not only excruciating but upsetting as well since this was NOT the case before I implemented those updates. I can no longer run one video while allowing another to queue up in a second tab (I'm accessing only trusted video sites such as Netflix, YouTube, and MegaVideo). I can no longer run searches in one window while doing anything active in another window. I am accustomed to multi-tasking and this sudden lack of internet performance is a huge hinderance. I have 2gigs RAM and since this happened have been running no other apps besides a browser, although I used to be able to have many windows/tabs open plus a Mail Client or graphics app to boot without any issues. I suppose that, since the problem seems to stem from the Security Update, not the new Safari, that reinstalling a clean version of Safari 3.2.1 wouldn't help? The only way to clear the Security Update out, if there is no successful fix localized to settings and preferences, is to completely reinstall my system and all my software and utilities...

  • Mail quits unexpectedly after last Safari update

I have been having problems with both Safari and Mail since the last Safari update. First, various web pages were opening up with lots of weird symbols in the text areas, and Safari kept quitting. I reset Safari and cleared cookies and that seemed to help. Then Mail started to quit too. I have repaired permissions. I can't figure out how to copy the error log from the Mail crash. Any ideas about what to do?

I figured out how to post one of the crash logs. Here it is.

  • Safari 4.0.3: "un-update" or locate "turn features off" buttons?

Pardon me if I'm a bit confused; this is the first forum I've visited that seems to prefer new threads to posting in related threads. I think.
Short version: I got the "updates available" message a couple weeks ago, and I updated. I now have Safari 4.0.3 and I hate it. I mean I really hate it. This is really disappointing for me, as Safari was the first ever pack-in browser that I really loved.
I have many issues with it, one of which (with the help of a thread here I stumbled across) I have semi-resolved, but am still not completely happy.
So I would like to know if anyone can tell me one of two things:
How to "undo" an update and go from something I loathe as much as Explorer and back to something I adored.
    Or
How to "turn off" the following irritants:
the "Top Sites" feature. This is just irritating. I use my computer at home for research. When I have pulled the information I need, I will only rarely ever need to revisit a paper. Though it's nice to know (for example, when researching STDs, that I always had on tap a large number of pictures of dripping groins, available even when the kids are playing games on Nickelodeon (ask me how I know this). Further, my computer at work is a shared computer, used by myself and four salesmen. This feature has resulted essentially in the salesmen all giving away to each other their "secret sources" for various materials. Since they're all on commission, this has resulted in a great deal of conflict there. Gotta love that.
Yes; I am well aware that I can "clear history" when I'm done with the net. The problem is that I don't want to clear the history from my home computer; it's something the kids can't just stumble across, and it is handy while I'm writing a paper, since it contains every site I've visited since the last clear.
The "page through" view for Bookmarks. Since there are no pictures that go with most of my Bookmarks when I'm writing research papers, I find myself scrolling through an endless procession of little black record albums, all with the Safari compass logo. Boy Howdy, now that's way better than a screen-filling list I could take in at a glance, yeah, Man....
I don't know what it's called, but that irritating "second layer" that spends sixty seconds or so generating a preview of something every time I mouse over an attachment thumbnail. 1: I don't always want to look at it. 2: it's faster to simply click it and open it in a new window or tab than it is to wait on this feature 3: opening it in a new tab doesn't completely stop me from browsing the rest of the page.
Actually, at this very moment, the "updates available" icon is bouncing on my dock, and I'm not going to click it until I see some reports of what the update is and what it does and how adversely it has affected folks.

Thanks for the reply, Golden Shoes.
I can't say that 4 is faster than what I had. I had a major speed issue with it, but I found advice about changing the numbers in the DNS servers blanks, etc, and did that. Sort of. I've only got room to enter one number; no way to enter both. But it did help, and the loading speed is almost up to what it was pre-update. While it's still a bit slower, I can live with it where it is now.
As for the Cover Flow advice:
Will that remove cover flow as an option completely? It's not that I don't like Cover Flow; I love it for perusing graphic files, etc. However, for running through my Bookmarks, it's horribly inappropriate.
I really don't want to use the Top Sites feature, however. I strongly dislike it, and am surprised to see that there is no option short of recoding to turn it off. I don't wish to sound like someone trying to make a sarcastic point with this next question, because I am being very serious:
Have a made a big mistake buying a Mac? I do not know how to read, write, or edit code, nor do I feel particularly comfortable that I could learn to do such a thing. Is there commonly a need to work directly with the code when "tuning" a Mac?
Just so you will have some background:
At work, we went to aluminum iMacs because the entire company was so disgusted with Vista that even the Board agreed we'd come out with less expense and lost hours swapping systems entirely as opposed to coping with Vista. I liked the iMac I was using at work so much that I bought one to replace my XP box.
But I am not by any stretch of the imagination more than just a "user." If changing code is the norm (as opposed to Preference or Finder toggles), I may have made a very expensive mistake.
Sorry for the digression; frustration coming out, I suppose. Ha!
If it's not too much trouble, can you clarify the results of pasting in the command you suggested? Will it completely disable the Cover Flow feature, or will it simply turn it off in relation to Bookmarks?
Will it completely disable the Top Sites feature?
And-- embarrassingly enough-- what is Terminal? Where do I find it?
Looking at the updates doesn't help. I "looked" at the last one. It said "Safari 4.0.3." There was nothing there to indicate "makes this and this mandatory and slows browser to a crawl."
This update similarly gives a name and series number, but nothing that would indicate if it's something I do or don't want (like Safari 4.0.3: it seemed like something good, but it's a long list of non-undoable "do not want" 'features.' ).
Is there anything that can be done about the mousing over a thumbnail automatically knocks you out of browsing to open up a representation of the file contents?
Thanks for the time and the advice. I apologize for knowing ... well, absolutely nothing.
