G5 Jet Engine FANS

My logic board failed and needed to be replaced after getting it back from the "apple approved" repair shop, upon "firing it up" the fans went into "take-off" mode, freaked me out as it didn't quit. I did a manual daily, weekly and monthly thru the "terminal app" from "Utilities" and no fix. I then went to the support/discussions here and followed all related links.
Okay, I have read all the posts for this problem and have, Installed iStat Nano which gives all the temps and fan speeds (3500 and up in this case) etc. checked to make sure the system was still the same (10.4.11), cleaned the "grills" all is dust free, I have reset the SMU switch, reset the Nvram and Pram, have place the Processor performance to "reduced" under energy saver in the sys prefs. And gentlemen, the fans are still running at 3500 and up with the exception of the "slots" and "backside" which are running at 250.
Any suggestions? The "Tech" who fixed my G5 had even less knowledge about this problem than I did before the problem existed.
I'm ready to go and buy the "ear mufflers" that the airport people wear around jet engines.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Hey Mr. Paycheck,
Perhaps I misunderstood also, but our problems sure sounded alike. My fans ramp on sites with heavy graphics also but I've come to know that my fans ramp when ANYTHING causes my cpu temps to rise. Running on high power is unbearable as it immediately raises the temps and the fans come on to compensate. Perhaps if I hadn't had a Dual 2.0 before this machine that ran so quiet on any power setting I wouldn't be concerned. Annoyed, but not concerned.
I'm going to take my Mac in for service this coming week. If I can afford the repairs, provided they can find anything wrong, I will let you know how things turn out.
If I could figure out how to raise your ratings I would. Since I've been scouring the boards lately I've noticed your unfailing kindness in trying to help people out. A hearty thanks from all whom you've helped.

  • Computer crashes, G5 fan goes jet engine

I've had this problem whenever compressing long movies that are an hour or over. Basically I set up the movie with the proper settings then leave it to compress overnight. What I've ended up finding in the morning is that the G5 fan is going full jet engine blast and the computer has hardcore crashed. I'm running on a dual 2Ghz G5 with 1.5 GB of RAM which is all Apple branded.
I'm running on Compressor version 1.2.1
Does anyone know the solution to this problem?

I had the same problem with my computer not too long ago, but it was still under warranty. Apple led me through a host of trouble shooting- the most emphesis being placed on my RAM. I removed the RAM, re-installed it, tried again- same issues. They eventually shipped me another Mac, but from the troubleshooting I was led through prior, everything pointed to the RAM being the culprit.

  • POWERMAC sounds like a jet engine when trying to start up...!

Ive been using my G4 powermac as a 2nd computer and havent had any problems with it until today.
I turned the computer on and I get the white screen with the apple and then the computer gradually starts to get louder, and louder, and louder - almost sounds like a jet engine.  I immediatly shut the computer down holding down the power button.
I tried it again and the same happened.  Ive never heard the computer make this sound and it was getting louder and louder and was too afraid to let it continue.
I have important things on my 2nd computer that I need.
Should I let it continue?  Has anyone experienced this before?  I shut it down while the computer is still on the startup screen.
    Help.

That is a safety feature to make sure it's not overheating when there's no OS to check temps or control the fans... at least on G5s, can't remember on my MDDs.
I have important things on my 2nd computer that I need.
If worse comes to worse you can pull the drive(s) to get at the info, or possibly use FireWire target disk mode...

  • Jet Engine Exhaust

I am interested in making jet engine exhaust for the planes in my 2D game. I have already read the other posts about particle systems and formulas, but i don't understand what I need to use as a "particle."
What exactly is one of these particles? Is it just an image of a certain darkness that can be changed for another lighter image as time progresses? Or is it something rendered in the program that doesn't involve any images? I don't seem to understand how i would go about drawing a particle system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1) create a Smoke class
    2) create a Smoke java.util.ArrayList
    3) use smokeList.add( new Smoke(x,y) ); for every time the jet moves
    4) make the Smoke class draw a circle with some small radius and the color (64,64,64)
    5) as time progresses for any given Smoke object, set their radius larger, and the alpha lower.
I think I made a particle generator with a neat smoke effect...
    Check out this place:
    www.thearikway.com
Theres only like 5-6 examples, find the particle/fireworks one...

  • Cannot open the Microsoft Jet engine workgroup information file

    Hi,
I have 4 linked servers in a SQL Server database.  One of them is another sql server database.  This one works fine.  I have 3 that are Access databases.  Last week I could run a query against these linked servers, but now when I open SQL Server Management Studio I get something like the following:
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "HRDB" returned message "Cannot open the Microsoft Jet engine workgroup information file.".
    Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "HRDB".
What does this error mean?  I've looked at several posts, but none apply to my problem.  I've looked to make sure there wasn't a .ldb open.  Anything else I've missed?
    Many thanks,
    Mark

The key error is "Cannot open the Microsoft Jet engine workgroup information file".  Here is a suggestion from a AccessMVP.
Are you using ULS (User Level Security) in Access, with a custom workgroup
information file (*.mdw)? If so, you may need to replace this file using a
copy that you should have backed up.
If you have not specifically implemented ULS, then you're still using it,
but you are joined to the file named System.mdw, with username Admin and a
blank password. In this case, which is more likely than the above case I
guessing, your copy of System.mdw may have somehow gotten corrupted. Try
searching your hard drive for this file. For example, my copy is in this
    folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Access
(Yes, I log on as Administrator on my PC routinely. Bad Tom).
Rename your copy of System.mdw to something else. Then try restarting
Access. Access 2003 will automatically create this file, if you are
permanently joined to System.mdw, and it does not find it during startup.
That should get you a fresh copy.
    Good Luck,

  • Jet Engine 4 needed for Creative Media Source Corrupt Libr

I have seen this asked before but not answered well.
I just installed Creative Media source for Zen Touch. When I bring up Creative Media source it says that I have a corrupt media library and need to download current Jet Engine 4 from Microsoft. I do that but when I try to upgrade it get the message that I already have a newer version on my computer. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with same result.
Is this bad software (Creative Media Source) or screwed registry or whatever on my computer.
Better yet can I remove Creative Media Source and just use Microsoft Media 0, i.e. will the necessary drivers be available?
Creative Nomad Explorer seems to be working ok?

    Dusty,
Have you also installed the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 available from Microsoft?
You can find the MDAC here - MDAC_TYP.EXE
If the difficulty persists, you can uninstall MediaSource via Add/Remove Programs Wizard in Control Panel, delete the MediaSource folder in n C:\Program Files\Creative and reinstall it.

  • New 27'' Imac fan sounds like jet engine

Hi all, i am having some serious issues with my attempt to enjoy apple computers. I am a first time user coming from pc's, just due mainly to the price difference. I just got my first apple computer, a 27'' imac (the standard one, no bells and whistles for this struggling college student). Just want one mainly for recording music and doing research papers. Had to get the first one replaced due to a bad optical drive in the first day. Just brought the replacement home and after 2 days i turn it on and it sounds like a 747 is taking off in my bedroom. I am not the most computer savvy person around, but looked up as much as i could on forums. Tried all the resets and nothing works. Everytime the computer is on there is a turbine that also comes on. I downloaded the istat widget thing and it says my cpu fan is running at over 3000 rpms. I'm no air dispersment specialist, but to me that sounds high. Does anyone know if this is common as of late, and any possible fixes?? I have an telephone appointment with an apple guy tomorrow, but am pretty sure it is going to just turn into a "buy the 3 year $170 applecare plan" speech, like when i called for the disc drive.
Second, are apple computers poorly made?? I know it's wierd asking on the apple website, but i have to get some answers. 2000 dollars is alot of money to me, and the fact that i've had 2 problems in less than a week's time scares me. Should i keep trying to get a good imac that won't crap out, or should i buy something else? Thanks in advance for any replies, i really appreciate it.

Thank you guys for your comments and suggestions. I really appreciate it. I'm thinking of taking it in for repair or replacement. My only concern is that this is 2 times in one week i've had to go and get it replaced. And that's brand new. What is the reliablity for this product going to be in 6 months to a year. For 2000 dollars i don't expect to have to do that. Also apple is not paying my labor to repackage everything, take it down 5 flights of stairs, go to the inconvinently placed apple store at the center of an outdoor mall, pay for my gas, or for my time that i could be using to do something productive. I guess maybe i'm just frustrated, but still. Now if i get a new one i may not be able to enjoy it as much because i will just be waiting for it to break down. Maybe i'll just cut a flap in the new box so i can see the screen and a few holes in the back of the box to run the cables. Then when it breaks down i can just close the flap and push the cables back through, and have it all ready to go back in no time flat. Thank you again for your suggestions, i'm just very ticked off right now.

  • I have a  2011 Macbook Pro and it sounds like a jet engine or fans loud as crazy. What is the reason for this? Also I upgraded the Ram to 16GB from 4GB. I use a lot of video editing software and also run the Elgato capture device. Thank you.

Can somebody please help me with this problem. Thanks.

    Try resetting the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Jet engine on start

This week my G5 (PowerPC, Dual 1.8Ghz) began a new life as a jet. I shut down at the end of the work day, and have it auto-start a few minutes before my work day begins.
The past couple of days I arrive to a roaring system, the grey screen with the apple and its spinning icon. I sounds like either a fan or a disk drive out of control. I did a hard pwr down (the button) and then re-boot. The first day I went through this process 3 times until the machine finally booted up and acted normal. Yesterday no such luck.
I went to plan b and tried to start up in Safe Mode, (which didn't happen) taking 25 minutes to arrive at the normal desktop.
Once the machine is up, everything works fine. Disk repair permissions found no problems, Norton found no problems.
Last night I just left it running to avoid the start-up roar.
Any ideas on what is happening? I'm a new convert to Mac and if my Win PC makes these noises, it generally doesn't bode well.

You ran is reving up because your G5 is not detecting your OS. Therefore the OS is not there to regulate it and it goes into default mode, which protects your machine in case it is over heating.
Also, very few here would recommend using +Norton Utilities+ on a Panther install (even though Norton says it's OK). The last OS I used it on was 10.2 and only after all my other utilities failed; basically a last ditch effort. Norton is not OSX worthy and is no longer updated or supported in OSX.
Instead, try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk. This is different then Permissions.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

  • Content engine fan gone bad? How to check health?

We deployed a CE-511 to a remote site.
The site contact told me one of the fans may have gone bad cause it sounds like "someone getting a tatoo".
"show power" or "show environment" doesn't work on the content engine.
I can't find anything in the syslog either.
Could someone please tell me how I can check the health / status of the system fans?
    thanks.

  • TestStand and MS Jet Engine Conflict

I have a MSVC++ 6.0 project interfacing with TestStand 2.0.1. I have an object that performs database operations on an Excel file using ODBC. What I have found is that I can perform database operations and then load a sequence without a problem, but if I try to perform another database operation after the sequence file load, I get a database error. If I move all the database operations to before loading a sequence then I don't have a problem if I use ReleaseSequenceFile(). Any ideas? Thanks.
    -G-

    Scott,
I'm using the Sequence Editor. What does OI stand for anyway? I did successfully login. The error is that the database engine believes it can't find a table, but if a sequence wasn't loaded before the call, it can find the table. Here's the flow currently:
    1. Start the App
    2. Create the TestStand Engine
    3. Login to TestStand
    4. Perform a database call
    5. Use results for other stuff ( non-TestStand related )
    6. Load a sequence
    7. Sequence loaded
    8. Repeat 4 ( fails )
It's the same exact call except I'm looking for a different value in one of the fields. The error is that the table can't be found. It doesn't make any sense how to the two are related. Thanks.

  • HDD Fan stuck at a very noisy 5000 rpm - is this normal ??

I've had a Intel iMac for a while now (Oct 2006), and it's always seemed noisy but I just figured that was normal (coming from a jet-engine-fanned-noisy-PC background!). A colleague at work just bought one and he says his is really quiet so I started doing some investigation.
It seems the hard drive fan is always running at 5000RPM which seems VERY high to me. Temperature/fan speeds are :
    Ambient air temp 27
CPU 1/2 core temp around 40
Disk temp around 31 (ie, not at all hot for a disk)
    CPU fan speed 805
    Optical fan speed 800
Hard drive fan speed 5000 !!!
The iMac isn't doing anything taxing at all. It's just used by my son who looks at web stuff and plays DVDs. The fan is running fast even on startup when the disk is cold.
I've tried resetting the SMC (unplug everything, leave it, then plug power lead in) and that makes no difference.
I'm sure this must be a fault, but before I take it into a service centre I'd like to be sure it's not something I can fix here
Thanks in advance for any help

    20" Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I had a similar problem with my iMac. It turns out that my son was holding the power button in when he plugged in the power cord which caused the system to enter a programming mode where one or more of the fans run at high speed. I unplugged the system for about 20 seconds, plugged the power cord back in, and all was well.

  • IMac won't/doesn't start up - spinning gear and fans forever

    Hi,
My iMac won't get past the Apple Logo/Spinning gear progress indicator. It started two days ago after I swapped out some USB devices (pulled my headset and inserted Photo card reader with an SD card in it) It didn't mount the SD card so I restarted. Wish I hadn't. It now will not complete start-up. I also get the jet-engine fans after about 30 sec (but I read this is normal). The only other thing I can think of that I have done recently that might be a problem was download some shareware games from www.macgamer.com which didn't install correctly and wouldn't run.
I have done everything I know or have found on this website. I have found a few posts where the problem looks just like mine, but none have posted solutions. (and a bunch with a similar sounding problem but always with some different detail).
Here is what I have done so far. After each of these a fresh reboot just hangs at the spinny thing:
    - rebooted from the install DVD (it will do this), repaired both hard drive and permission several times each. Some pemissions were repaired but no repairs were made to the hard drive, it checked out OK each time.
    - Ran the "Quick" hard ware test. Everything passed
    - Reset the PRAM (or at least held down the PR+shiftCMd combo, not sure if that had any effect).
    - tried to start in safe mode, but can't because after the second chime, it just hangs again at the Apple logo.
    - Started in single user mode, ran fcsk twice (NO PROBLEMS FOUND) then did the steps from single user mode to delete cache and prefernce files found in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1484205)
None of this has helped. Right now I see only two possibilities, Archive and Install or take it up the street to the Apple Store (really close, but its the first one in Portugal and the store has only been there for about 3 months, so I have to wonder if they know what they are doing).
Does anyone have any suggestions before I take either of these drastic steps? Which one should I do first?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1 Gb

thanks for the suggestions but I have tried both those. I can´t boot up in safe mode, because it simply doesn´t get that far, always getting stuck at the apple log/spinning thing, and the disc utilities (which I have now run several times) don't find any problems.~
I have now followed all the steps in the apple support "my computer won't start" guide (106464 or whatever it is called), which I was at first hesitant to do becasue that doc is for up to OS 10.3.9 and I am running Tiger 10.4.5 (or was running it before this happened, that is). Still nothing has helped.
However, I did make a discovery. After booting into single user mode and deleting/moving some of the preference files, as instructed in the above help doc, I tried to "boot the system in single user mode" (it tells you the command for that when you first enter single user mode). And after showing some start up codes, which go by really fast, but don't seem to show any errors, the screen displays three line of text, which I wrote down but don't have on me at the interennt cafe I am now forced to visit to get on this forum. The first two are the same and I can't remember exactly what they say, but the third says:
root user not found. sleeping and trying again.
It then sits for about 3 seconds and then displays the three lines again, over and over. I have let it go for upt ot 10 minutes. So does anyone know what that means, if that is the true problem or how to fix it without reinstalling? Let me repeat, numerous "repair disc" using disc utility and "fsck" in single user mode have not returned one single problem or error code since this problem started. Unfortunately I don't have disc warrior, but it has been ordered and is one its way.

  • Server attempts reboot or shutdown, but can't

I've been having a problem with a G4 Xserver. It had been intermittent (every couple of months) for a while, but it's been crashing multiple times a day recently.
I'm on 10.2.8, running AFS and FTP, with Netinfo for login. I have about 23 users, and it's rare for many of them to be on at any given time. I do have Retrospect client installed, and Timbuktu.
When it stops responding, I usually see the spinning daisy, as though the machine is shutting down or rebooting. Once or twice, I have seen the solid blue screen. The activity lights on the front panel are pegged at the top end.
Usually I get a run of several of these, then it stops. The first one has always had software update showing, which may be coincidence. This time, it's been going on for a week, and I need to get a resolution.
Crash logs and panic logs show nothing. Watchdog shows the restart process, but nothing for why the activity level pegged and it tried to restart. Automatic reboot is enabled in case of a freeze. Sample of watchdog log:

I have done some looking around the web, and I hear of others having problems due to hardware issues (UPS, and so on). I will be replacing the battery tomorrow, and I'm considering resetting the PMU. Another other ideas?
My usual process is to run fsck and repair permissions. This usually does the trick, but not this time.
    Thanks in advance!
    Anne

I replaced the battery a week and a half ago, and it was up for over a week. After a couple of crashes after that, I started leaving the server closet door open, and that has kept it up for a couple of days. So far, so good.
I don't have a UPS. I did hear from someone in the neighborhood about a power outage one particular evening, but that's it.
The screen is used for 3 different machines, and is turned off or disconnected most of the time, so no screen saver. The only energy save options that are enabled are to restart after a power outage or freeze. It doesn't sleep.
I have heard, on the osx server list, about software update hanging computers, and, separately, about the PMU forcing a restart (instigated by restart when system hangs being checked). None of the exact details (hardward, OS, logs) are identical to my situation.
The next time it crashes, I'll uncheck restarting after a freeze or power outage.
Oh, there's a second machine right below it (slot-loading Xserver, same OS, does web server and moodle), and it has no problems. I keep thinking it is most likely some hardware issue (the jet-engine fans, maybe).
    Thanks for the idea!
Something else that I tried, although it didn't give me anything useful:
I left process viewer running, but shut off the monitor. When it tried to restart, I could see the last view of process viewer under the spinning daisy wheel. Which showed process viewer as the highest CPU using item, at 2.7%. Although it was refreshing every 3 seconds and could have been outdated information by then, it was worth a try.

  • What is WRONG with my MAC G5?

    Hi all,
I've posted several times in various forums about a number of problems I've been having that remain unresolved, and would like to appeal once more for help. I have a 6 year old 2GHz PowerPC G5 (2004) with 4GB of RAM, running FCS 6.0.6 and OS 10.5.8. I must reiterate that, despite the computer's age, it was working just fine until a kernel panic in December that has since left the computer feeling sluggish. I've performed a clean install (twice) of both the OS and FCS. I've bought new RAM and reseated in every possible way. I bought a new external harddrive (used to store my media) in case that was the culprit. I even took the computer and display into an Apple Store where they tested it for 2 days finding "nothing wrong with it". Yet even they couldn't get the "High" quality setting back in FCP. It defaults to medium now (unlike before) - which is my biggest concern. The computer's internal drive has 30% free space. The external more than 15%. And naturally, I've repaired permissions and trashed pref files, etc., with no results. Oh! And I've run the Hardware Diagnostics disk, three times, and everything keeps passing. I also just cloned the internal Maxtor drive onto an external Lacie drive and booted up from that - with no obvious improvement. Trying to eliminate the hard drive as a factor.
One more symptom -- perhaps related, perhaps not -- is that I can no longer put the computer to sleep without it crashing, followed by jet engine fans coming on. This happens every single time. Unfortunately it wasn't happening (as frequently) when I took the computer to the Apple geniuses.
And last week, when I turned the computer on, the screen remained black. The LED flashed in what I think was a series of three fast flashes. I rebooted and everything has been fine since (with the display).
I think I've found some suspicious items in the console logs. But I don't have a clue how to accurately read them or fix the problem. Can someone please help me?
The windowserver_last.log is full of the following:

    ===============
If I had the money, of course I'd buy another computer. But I don't. And deep inside, I still believe there's a fix. Am I right or wrong???
    Chris
    P.S.
I don't have a clue how to read Power Fractal (suggested to someone else in another post), but here's my score:
    Elapsed time: 1.6 seconds
    Achieving 6261.1 Megaflops
    Color Speed: 10
    Maximum Count: 4096
One more thing I gleaned from another post are similar istat readings that seemed unusual to that person. Backside fans: 51rpm. ???

First thing I would do is make your post clear(-er) (I find it easier to break things down into one item per paragraph or into lists); and what HARDWARE tests and steps you have tried - that we tend to repeat over and over with system failures.
I've posted several times in various forums about a number of problems I've been having that remain unresolved,
    *I have a 6 year old 2GHz PowerPC G5 (2004) with 4GB of RAM, running FCS 6.0.6 and OS 10.5.8.*
I must reiterate that, despite the computer's age...
+*it was working just fine until a kernel panic in December that has since left the computer feeling sluggish.*+
+I've performed a clean install (twice) of both the OS and FCS.+
+I've bought new RAM and reseated in every possible way.+
+I bought a new external hard drive (used to store my media) in case that was the culprit.+
+I even took the computer and display into an Apple Store where they tested it for 2 days finding "nothing wrong with it". Yet even they couldn't get the "High" quality setting back in FCP. It defaults to medium now (unlike before) - which is my biggest concern.+
    +The computer's internal drive has 30% free space.+
+The external more than 15%.+ 15% is still low and can be highly fragmented, but not germaine to hardware problems.
+I've run the Hardware Diagnostics disk, three times, and everything keeps passing.+
+I also just cloned the internal Maxtor drive onto an external Lacie drive and booted up from that - with no obvious improvement.+
+Trying to eliminate the hard drive as a factor.+
I'd even say LaCie might just be one more layer of possible problems.
There are FAQs on kernel panics which:
    A/ Been there, done that?
B/ Do they need to be listed (again)? revisited?
C/ panics are hardware almost always, RAM, controllers, sometimes drivers, even corrupt NVRAM
Does it boot into Open Firmware?
    If yes, redo reset-nvram
    If no, DOA

    Power Mac G5 PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0Ghz M9032LL/A, A1047 1969C
NOTE: Power Mac G5 Thermal Calibration Service It is vital for all Power Mac G5 to run thermal calibration after fitting a new logic board or processors, without it, Temperature Control will not be able to detect the system temperture correctly. As a result, it could cause the cooling fans to run at high speed, eventually damgaging the logic board or processors.
Lastly, I would never run a Mac w/o UPS, which can lengthen life and protect equipment and even the PSU.
And for $1500 the iMac Apple Store Specials can be a good fast alternative to G5.
