G5 mounted as firewire hard drive

Regarding a G5 PowerPC mounted as a hard drive.
I would like to gain access to off board gear that is connected to a G5's PCIe slots from another computer, say my intel based MacBook Pro w/ current software. Since I've mounted the G5 as a hard drive, will it act as a PCIe bridge as well? Will the off board gear be apparent to the MacBook Pro?
I'm wanting to access PCIe based MOTU I/O with logic 9.1 which won't run on the G5 but will on my MacBook Pro. Will this work?

2 firewire hard drives stop mounting after attempting to install dvd burner

Hi....Im really at a loss here....I have 2 200gig firewire hard drives connected to my G4 tower which mounted and worked without a hitch until I tried to install a Lacie firewire dvd burner....now neither of the drives mount or even show up in dik utility on the tower or my powerbook....is there something I could do here?...lol...I dont even know where to start...and to top it off I couldnt get the burner to work on the tower or the powerbook....lol...my whole digital world is screwed right now....thx for reading my disaster story.

Ok this didnt work....I then tried these drives on a friends ibook (which mounted them b4) and same result...Does anybody know where I can get firmware or drivers? Or have a suggestion? anything would be good help thanks.

External Firewire hard drive won't mount after 10.4.10 update

I see many posts about USB drives not mounting after 10.4.10 update. Just lending my voice to that issue (my USB drive won't work either) as well as the 10.4.10 update breaking Firewire drives.
Hope a fix is coming. No backups are scaaaary.

How to fix the problem of a missing external Hard Drive (Firewire) after it vanishes from you desktop after installing 10.4.10 update.
I have a iMac PPC (Non intel). Aparently my system upated installed the wrong version of 10.4.10 and thus my external firewire hard drives a 320 GB Westerndigital My Book, and Acomdata 80 GB, and aWestern Digital 160 GB media center all vanished from the desktop.
The instructions below should be credited to several different people. I found various version of these steps in the Discussion. I combines a few of them into this one 10 step fix and it worked for me. I hope it works for you.
1) Shut down you computer
2) Unplug all peripherals (i.e USB and Firewire, I left computer power plug in as well as ethernet and Keyboard+ Mouse) and leave along for 30 Minutes
3) Restart holding down the Command (Apple) + Option + P + R keys for three startup bongs, then release the keys and your computer will start up as usual.
4) Verify and repair disk Permission using Disk Utility. (Several things were repaired here)
5) Instal 10.4.10 Combo PPC
6) Restart Again
7) Again repair Disk permissions (None of mine needed to be repaired fyi this time)
8) Unplug Power cable and Firewire cable from External Hard Drive (leave along for 1 minute)
9) Reconnect power to Firewire External Drive first then the Firewire cable to the drive second, then the firewire cable from the Drive to the computer last.
10) Turn on your Firewire Drive... you will head it spin up and eventually show up on your desktop just like it did before the 10.4.10 update.

My MacBook Pro won't let me mount my external Hard Drive. Just trying to restore my iTunes library.

My MacBook Pro, less than a year old, started acting weird. I backed everything up, took it in to Best Buy, who sent it out to Apple Repair and they put in a new motherboard.
It's running on Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
Now I am trying to put everything back on the computer from my external Maxtor 80GB Hard Drive. MacBook Pro won't recognize the external drive.
I tried Disk Utility. I can see the external drive, and did a repair disk and verify disk. Several times. Each time it says "This partition map seems to be ok."
However, I am not able to mount it, as that option is greyed out and i can't select it.
Also, under the Icon for the external hard drive, it has the Macintosh HD Icon (essentially my computer). I tried to restore this way, didn't work.
I need this to mount, as it has all of my itunes stuff on it; dozens of my sons movies, and my entire iTunes library.
PLEASE HEEEEELP!! HOW CAN I MOUNT THIS EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE? Thank you in advance

Unstable firewire hard drives performance in 220 volts countries

Over the years, I often travel back and forth to the US, Asia and Europe with my MacBook Pro and external firewire hard drives, which were purchased in the USA. While in Europe or Asia, which generally runs on ~220 volts, I've had several experiences whenever I daisy chained more than 1 external firewire hard drive to my laptop, either the connection was very unstable, resulting in drives randomly unmounting; or my current dilemma where the 2nd drive is not mounting at all. I never experience these issues at all while I'm in the US. My guess is that the difference in voltage (110 vs. 220) or cycles (60 Hz vs. 50 Hz) is affecting the drives somehow. I have experienced this with G-drives, and the Newertech Voyager Q and Wiebetech Traydock which are well built, reliable enclosures. I pair the enclosures with Seagate or Hitachi drives. All the enclosures' AC adapters specifically state that they're rated for 100-240 volts. I thought hooking all my drives to a 2000 watt voltage transformer would solve the problem but it didn't. Using 1 firewire drive is not a problem, but the daisy chaining seems problematic. The dilemma is I MUST daisy chain the drives for backup purposes and just for general data wrangling. Plus my MacBook Pro only has 1 firewire port. My laptop and firewire port is not the problem, as I've upgraded several times over the years.
My questions are:
1. Has anyone else ever experienced USA drives acting funky in 220 volts countries?
2. Anyone have an idea for a solution to this problem?

PS. On perhaps a related note, when I plug my MacBook Pro into a 220 volts outlet and lay my wrists below the keyboard, there is a current or vibration that I do not feel when I'm in the US.

There is no difference in the power delivered to the computer or the drives, it's 12-15v wherever you are, and it's DC so there are no cycles, I think this is not the right tree you're barking up.

Large OS 8.6 Compatible Firewire Hard Drive?

I'm needing a larger firewire hard drive, which must able to back up my older Macs (running 9.1 and 8.6)
However the newest 500GB ones all seem to list OS 10.x as their minimum requirement. (Not sure whether this is the minimum for doing stuff like formatting and partitioning, or whether these drives will not mount at all under OS9)
Can anyone suggest a large firewire external drive which will mount and perform backups under OS 8.6 ?

What are people doing to support their firewire hard drives?
Sure firewire is plug and play
but with hard drives if you do not shut down
its plug and pay.
In my case, my computer freezes once a month
for whatever reason
and I have to power it down.
This my firewire HD does not like.
I have not had much success with my HD
(it just got back from the shop)
So do people keep a diskwarrior cd in the slot
to resurrect the volume when it refuses to mount
and wants to be initialized?
How do you keep your firewire HD up and running?

Never thought of it as care and feeding.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up my entire HDD to my LaCie FW HDD. It is set up as a boot drive in CCC so I can boot from it if I need to.
I also use Tech Tool Pro regularly. Actually, since I use CCC to do incremental backups TTP is on both HDDs, so I can boot from one HDD and work on the other and vice-versa. Quite a neat arrangement, actually.
I have my LaCie partitioned so that I have my internal HDD on one partition, Previous OS on another and I have my Pismo running Tiger on a third, and a large 4th partition which I recently used to backup my son-in-law's entire iBook HDD as I completely reformatted and re-installed Tiger.
When I am not actively using the LaCie, if I remember, I eject it from the Finder window, and shut it down, so it is not running continuously.
That's enough for now.

Laptop no longer can mount my external hard drive

After updating to Mavericks, my laptop no longer can mount my external hard drive. What on earth is going on here and how can I fix this?

The drive is spinning and I was using it the night before I updated my macbook. It is viewable in disk utility but not in finder, and attempts to mount it are thwarted. The problem is literally coincident with updating the mavericks. When I click verify it didn't appear to have any problems but I will retry when I am back at home and report the findings.
It is a Toshiba 1GB external hard drive and has adequate power. Lights are on, etc.
I have not checked on another computer as do not have one available, but that will be my next step.

Firewire Hard Drive corrupts OS Lion and will not boot

I have re-installed OS lion on my macbook pro 5-6 times now. There seems to be some conflict with my firewire hard drive enclosure which causing it not to boot shortly after using it when restarting. I am trying to get all my data off this hard drive.
When I boot in Verbose Command + V
I get this error which goes into a loop and does not allow the computer to boot.

I end up having to reinstall the OS every time and it fixes it temporarily.

Fixed it without even reinstalling the OS this time. I connected a firewire 400 cable between the mac book pro and my other mac and held down the "t" key to boot the dead macbook pro as a hard drive on my other mac. The hard drive didn't show up but it seem to get it out of the loop it was locked in not allowing it to boot and unable to reinstall the OS. After restarting it booted right back up like normal.
This was an easy fix if my enclosure caused this problem again and does not allow my computer to boot after using the FW 800 cable.

How do I mount my internal hard drive?

Can anyone tell me how to mount my internal hard drive? I have a macbook air late 2010 model. 128gb flash storage. I was having problems because it would freeze on me after sleep. I ran disk utility and repair disk. It says everything is fine. But it is unmounted. Clicking on mount didn't do it. I already backed it up before it was unmounted. I did the hardware test too. It said there were no hardware issues. I see the apple brand hd but the "macintosh Hd" is grayed out. Please help!

Try doing this:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer flash drive. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.

If you re-format it you will lose all the data on it!!!!! So make sure you have backed up the drive or moved all the data on it to another external HD or the internal HD on your iMac.

Yes, you can set up your external firewire HDD as an emergency boot drive.
Here's what you need to do:
1. Your HDD must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
2. (Optional) I suggest you partition your HDD so that the first partition is roughly equivalent to the size of your internal HDD. The rest can be partitioned for other uses. (See Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery) For step-by-step for formatting and partitioning please post back).
3. Use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone of your internal HDD to the external firewire HDD/partition.

External Firewire Hard Drive is not recognized

I have a LaCie External Firewire Hard Drive (like this one (http://www.lacie.com/us/support/support_manifest.htm?id=10105). Since it uses a fireware 400 cable, I bought a FireWire 800-400 adapter, the one from moshi that is sold in the mac store.
I have tried connecting it to both ports in the external harddrive, connecting and disconnecting and still is not recognized. Any idea and suggestions?
I already tried in another computer, with windows xp, and the hard drive works.

Hi, oops, I have more than 1 mac & I apologize for assuming you are a multiple mac owner..
You could visit your local Apple Store or Local Apple Approved Service Agent.
You could try connecting via USB if your external HD has the capability, it could also be a bad cable.
You can check the Finder -> Preferences & the Show These Items..
You can reboot with the Ext HD connected & see if it shows up on your d/top...L

Mount an external hard drive in single user mode

Do any know how to mount an external hard drive in single user mode:
I've issue the following command:
/sbin/mount -uw /
mkdir /Volumes/ex1
/sbin/mount_hfs /dev/disk2s3 /Volumes/ex1
(I've checked my external hard drive using df -k showing the device is disk2s3)

   I wouldn't mind knowing the answer myself. I think the problem with doing it in the manner you attempted is that the device tree hasn't been created yet so the mount command is certainly not going to work. I assume that the answer is to start up enough of the system to have the device tree created. Unfortunately, I don't know where in the startup process that occurs. You could try the following command after making the boot volume writable:
/usr/libexec/registermach_bootstrapservers /etc/mach_init.d
Then check to see if the /dev virtual filesystem has been created. Of course it wouldn't surprise me if that didn't also mount your disks. If not, try the following:
/sbin/SystemStarter
It should have been created after that because at that point almost the whole system has started.

kaz-k is correct about FireWire not being supported by any possible connector or adaptor to USB-C and never will. However, there is no such thing as a FireWire Hard Drive. There are only SATA (or if it is a really old one, ATA,) drives in a FireWire enclosure. If you can remove the drive from the case/enclosure - bust it open somehow if it is a glued-up unit - then the drive can be placed into a regular USB3 enclosure. Then it can connect to the new MacBook via any one of the adaptors Apple sells.
