G5 No power, only 1st LED on at test

hi,
I have read many of the posts here relating to Imac g5 not starting up. I have the same problem. I have a g5 ALS. I did the LED test. The first LED comes on but the second LED would not flicker or come on. So, I concluded (from the apple support info on the net), that my logic board was gone. I replaced the logic board an hour ago and: NOTHING! The same thing! LED 1 on, that is it. Did I miss something? Should I have had replaced the power supply in stead? Please help! Lost in Paris....
thank you

Hi,
I'm new to this forum so please be gentle...
My iMac G5 2nd edition (with Ambient Light Sensor) froze today and the fan went berserk. Only option we had was to shut the thing up by pressing the power button. Now the mac won't boot anymore. When I try to boot it sometimes the light on the front lights up and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the chime sounds and sometimes it doesn't. The screen stays black. I cannot boot from cd player either. I tried the procedure as written in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2173?viewlocale=en_US
The first and second of four LEDS on the back are on permanently (which is good according to the article), but the third is not, which should indicate that the computer and the LCD display aren't communicating and no video signal is being generated.
I want to be absolutely sure that the logic board needs to be replaced and that I tried everything there is before I run to the store to buy me a new iMac.
Any suggestions? Thanx!

  • A different question for "Old Comm Guy" about that quote for G4 PCI "YIKES" machines, mine has only 5 led's, but do fit the lighting sequence listed.

My G4 400 Mhz PCI "YIKES" machine has only 5 led's, none in DS4 or DS5, nothing there but the un-molested sodlier bumps (never has anything been there), and my lighting sequences are 7 & 8 are on together, the others are dependant upon keystrokes or other demands (mouse, etc.).
There are seven diagnostic LEDs on the Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics) logic board.
    DS1 = ATA drive activity
DS4 and DS5 = USB power for downstream devices  (There is no DS2 or DS3 on the board.)
DS6 = Ultra ATA bus activity
    DS7 & DS8 = Power Indication
In a working unit, these LEDs should be in sync with each other: both on or both off. If one LED is on and the other is off, there is a problem.
    DS9 = CPU Bus
Now I have a problem that started when I opened the side to check the led's in operation, side was open for 6 or 7 minutes and I got the screen of death, darkened, need restart, multi languages. ....  I had just cured the start-up problems I was having for a month, 10 days ago. It was the powered USB hub plugged into the machines back panel, instead of the K/B port, I did have the mouse to the K/B and hub to back of machine, swapped locations and it was fixed, even the dead printer came to life and began printing (hadn't worked for 10 months !!)
What cuased the "screen of death" was traced to a memory dimm / ram stick that died, a PC133, 256MB made by 16X8 (or XB), I swear I wasn't dragging chains over the M/B, or anything really stupid, (I ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but not dumb either).
The "death screen" has caued a big headache, very hard to get to Applejack, open firmware, ect., I have, but not with any consistancy, did them, did DU test & verify, all passed "GOOD" or "no problems", all this was done in "safe boot mode", but I can't get to "regular mode" after restart !! ...  it just sits on the gray apple screen w/o the spinning gear / wheel for hours !!!
Any ideas would be nice to hear, I plan on doing a re-install or repair / restore from / with the install DVD tomorrow.
And a link to info. of which ram / dimm memory sticks I might use from the other machines I have here, a G3 B&W, G4 QS 800 DP, etc. what will interchange ?, if any ?  ...........  Thanks for any input you may have, ..... wayne146 .....
I need some sleep, this has given me a massive headache, all because I read that quote and knew my lights didn't quite match it. ..... If only I had not cared, I migth not have gotten in such a bind / blunder, stupid me, I could resist it, I had to look for a compairison.
    signing off for a few hours ....... wayne146 ..........

    Good Morning, old comm guy,
Well I tried following your instructions to the letter, as best my limited knowledge would take me.
I opened the "terminal window", then "terminal preferences", the proper radio button was already checked for the phrase you indicated, and the insert line / window had "/bin/bash/", grayed out in it, below that is the "declare  terminal type"  that was set to "xterm color", so I couldn't change the grayed out window, but I could make selections for "declare. term. type"  ... I left that as it was at "xterm color".
In the bottom of the Term. Pref. window is a "Open a saved term. file ...." and a window to enter a selection, when I clicked on "select", it open a "finder window" ,<applications> with almost everything grayed out, not knowing what to do, I backed out of the finder window, and also I can't just type a command into the "open a saved term. file" window, it must be done with the select button.
So basically I'm saying this Unix stuff is all Greek to me, I would need more detailed instructions to follow to the letter, for me to get through this with any success.
And this is weird, while I was working in Yahoo mail and here in discussions I was in "Safe Boot" for several hours, with several restarts in "Safe" (the only way I could do anything) I was swapping and checking a few different RAM sticks with the diagnostics in "about this mac" (one had died when watching the led's). the one that died, return to the living & working world, ??????? .....  and this G4 400mhz "YIKES" machine, STARTED FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AGAIN (?????????????) SHUTDOWN W/ K/B BUTTON, RESTART W/ K/B BUTTON, So weird !!!
And anther bit of weirdness is that while the Apple Tech. info says this uses PC 100 sdram, every stick of memory in this machine has stickers on them from different makers saying that they are PC 133 sdram of 256 mb. ??? ..... Can this be true ?, has this thing altered itself or altered the RAM, to work with each other ???
After it started working "properly" (?), both Firefox and Safari crashed many times and often, so I dumped Firefox (3.6.19) and reloaded a fresh FF 3.6.19, as I may have done something to them by accident in my panicing and buggering around, even had a Screen of Death 1 or 2 times, and it restarted with only a push of the front reset button, restarted as if it was just turned on with no problems lurking in it's past. .... Also weird !!! ?????
The New FireFox (3.6.19) hasn't crashed since the new install, that maybe OK now, time will tell,  ........ wonder if the wrong ram was causing browsers to crash ???? ... or is the ram wrong ??... why is it working ???
All the Ram stick were bought from "Chris", the Apple Expert @ RE - PC, here in Seattle, he also sold me this YIKES machine, so there was no mistake as to what I wanted the RAM for.
I have a spare G3 B/W 450Mhz machine that also has pc 133 sdram in it as well, same thing with it, bought from "Chris", and the Ram in it too. It only has OS 9.2.2 on it, I need to do the work around to put Tiger 10.4.11 on it. Later .......
Well what do you think ??? ..... It's alot to process, take your time,
Please review this babbling I have put forth, it could be written a little clearer, but I have read it over twice and it makes sense as I read it (of course, I know what I meant when I typed it)......

How can I make it to load all the records from my xml doc.
    Thanks in advance.

thanks for both the replies above - essentially the same correct solution.
something worth noting now that I've written and tested both a SAX solution and a DOM solution is that there is a significant (4 x) time penalty using SAX.
I considering dividing the vector I am storing/recovering into chunks and saving each chunk separately using DOM to speed things up...
    any thoughts on this approach?

  • Only One LED works when shuffle turns on

hi, i just bought my 2nd gen ipod shuffle, i turned it on to find only one LED shows the battery status. Both LEDs work for everything else apart from when i turn it on.
Is this a problem or is it just normal?

Not to worry... it's normal behavior.

  • Power Adapter/charger LED flickers?

Searched the PB forum but haven't found this one...
My 1ghz Ti PB power adapter charge LED (the plastic circle at the end of the plug that goes into the computer) starts flickering slightly. Just a very slight rapid flicker. There is no damage to the plug that I can see. When this happens, the screen flickers slightly at the same time. I have a new inverter board that I'm going to install to fix a (separate) back light problem and I'm wondering if these two are some how related? Or is the adapter going bad? Don't have another one to try to see if the problem disappears. Anyone had this problem?

Hi, Adrift. Your adapter ringlight should never flicker, period. If you don't have any other access to a known-good adapter, take your PB and adapter to a local Apple dealership and see whether they have a good PBG4 adapter with which you can perform a quick test. This used to be a simple matter when Powerbooks that used the same adapter as yours were still for sale and demonstrators were on display; it may be less convenient now that the MacBooks and MBPs use a different adapter. But many stores will still have good older adapters around for use in testing, and may let you use one for a few minutes at no charge. If it doesn't flicker, replace your adapter.
Do you have a good main battery in the Tibook? If so, and if your adapter is intermittently cutting out or losing voltage, I would expect the display and all other components of the PB to be powered by the battery during the split-second outages of power from the adapter, without any loss of data or function. If you have no main battery or a dead one, then even a momentary loss or diminution of power from the adapter carries high risks: of the loss of unsaved work in progress, and of directory corruption potentially leading to the loss of stored data.
I know nothing about the parameters that govern when or how quickly the battery takes over for the adapter or the adapter takes over again from the battery, but of course under normal circumstances, unplugging the adapter cable from the computer with a good battery in place carries no risk at all. So the switchover, at least in that direction, must be instantaneous. Perhaps it isn't as quick going the other way, and that may come into play in your situation. This is just speculation, though.
I can't tell you whether problems with your inverter board and/or backlight might be related to the adapter problem.

  • How to read the power and status LEDs on cFP2020

Can the cFP2020 Power and Status LEDs be monitored by a host program? Also, can the Power and Ready LEDs be monitored from the other cFP Modules?

You can not directly read the Network Module Power or Status LED from a host program. Likewise, you can not directly read the Power and Ready LED of an IO module.
However, even though you can not directly ready the LED status, there are ways of finding out most of the information that the LEDs convey.
For the Network Module Power LED, you can infer the status of the Power LED by looking at the channel status for any/all items that are on the bank. If the items have errors indicating that a communication timeout has occured or an addressed item does not exist, then it is probable that the unit is offline (either because of no power or a fault). The Status LED indicates the current operating status of the Network module and in most cases, if it is flashing
, then a fault has occured that shutdown the processor. In most cases, you will not be able to determine that the Status LED is flashing, as the Status LED indicates a fault condition which will put the unit into a non-standard operating mode (e.g. firmware corruption, unassigned IP Address, or an OS fault).
For the IO modules, each channel on a module can report status, and based upon the status you can infer the state of the LEDs. If the module does not have the Power LED lit, the most likely status will be "Addressed item does not exist". If the module has the Power LED but no Ready LED, then the status will indicate that the "item is unconfigured". If the module has both a Power and Ready LED, than the channel should report either a good status, or a channel specific error (if applicable).

  • Why the CPU Frequency will just stated at 1189MHz when the X230 had AC Power ONLY (Battery Removed)?

    Dear All,
I bought a X230 (i7) notebook.  I found that if removed the battery from the notebook and only use AC power with the X230 Notenook.  The CPU frequency will stated at 1189MHz.  It will not change no matter how many program the notebook is running.  The CPU frequency will rise to 2.9GHz or upto Turbo when the Notebook with battery or battery and AC power.  Why the CPU Frequency will just stated at 1189MHz when the X230 had AC Power ONLY (Battery Removed)?  This is not right.  Any setting in the X230 Notebook need to change?  Please help.

The situation is probably the same as it was for the X220. A 65W power adapter by itself doesn't provide enough power to run the computer at full speed, but it can when combined with a battery. However the 90W adapter may be able to run the computer at full speed without a battery.
As it was with earler X-series. This is by design. It allows people to travel with the smaller, lighter 65W adapter. However for maximum speed and flexibility it's best to always use the 90W adapter.

  • MuVo2 (1,5G): Can I Use output power only (not install the battery) when I listen the mus

    Hi Sir:
When I am in home and listen the music on MuVo2 ,can I use output power only (AC power) and remove the battery ( the battery is not in the MuVo2)?
This is good to the MuVo2 or not ? (have any damange?)
Because I always use the MuVo2 in my home, I think to charge AC into the battery, and use it until in low battery , then charge again.. It seem to a little stupid....
Can I use AC(output power) only when I listen the music ? and remove the AC(output power) when I close/shut down the MuVo2 ? ( I know , the usermanual say it is not good to MuVo2 if AC(output power) "always on" the MuVo2 even it's shutdown.)
I saw in the usermanual there will be a little image indicate the MuVo2 is "output power only".... So can I use output power only or not ? Is it good to MuVo2?
    Thanks a lot !!

    Richard,
Yes, you can use the player on the AC outlet only if you want, that's fine.

  • Repair headphone/mic plug & power/batt/hdd leds

I live in the Netherlands and handed in my laptop with Paradigit 2x for reparation, the second time because the service company of HP did not fix the problem. Now the problems are fixed, however the power/battery/harddisk leds are not working and additionally the headphone and microphone plugs are also not functional. Handing in the laptop and waiting a month for them to fix it is not an option anymore. Therefore I am considering to repair the issue myself.
I think the problem originates from the fact that several plugs are not plugged in inside of the laptop. The top cover was renewed in the second repair, so I suppose several wires were not connected. Does anyone have information about opening this model and suggestions how the problem may be solved. The model is: HP Presario CQ60-200ED.
    Thanx in advance

I've had a trouble lifting the metal structure over the main board, I guess it's attached at the other side (actually the top side) from under the keyboard's underside.
How to detach the keyboard on this model? Is it really the keyboard that must be removed or it's enough with some plastic strips around it?
Thanks in advance for any help!
PS. I already discovered that the ants did really a mess in there; until now I've cleaned almost all surfaces suspecting a lot of interference/overload was happening there.

    Hello happyjoe,
you can easily check if your memory is operating in Dual Channel mode or Single channel mode.  Just run CPU-Z and click on the tab labeled "memory".
It would be very strange if your retailer is right when it comes to memory population for Dual Channel mode.  Usually, the color of the memory slots is different for each channel. For Dual Channel Mode your modules should be installed either in DIMM_DDR2_1+3 or DIMM_DDR2_2+4.
    Quote
In the manual I received with the MB the pictures on page 2-7 imply that dual channel support should be configured with the sticks in OPPOSITE color sockets (So DIMM_DDR2_1 & DIMM_DDR2_3).  However, in the manual online - http://download1.msi.com.tw/files/downloads/mnu_exe/M7338v1.0.zip - this information is conveniently left out.  It appears that what my retailer is telling me is the truth, but I would like to know for sure.  What is the proper way to configure the MB for Dual Channel support (and MSI, you may want to document this!)?
Your link leads to the less detailed Multilanguage User manual.  The English User Manual which contains information about memory population rules can be found online a well:

  • D-led hangs when testing memory

    Mainbord: MSI K7T Turbo2
When i turn on my pc, the D-led hangs when testing the memory.
The instruction book says: The d-led will hang if the memory module is damaged or not installed properly. But The memory module works in a other computer, so it isn't damaged. I tried all slots, but it didn't work.
    is the mainbord damaged ???

I am currently working my way through exactly the same problem.  Others in the forum have had the same thing too so it's nice to know we're not alone.
Other possible sources for this problen are:  the PSU isn't powerful enough, or maybe there is a fualt on the DDR slots (one thread recommended trying to raise the modules slighlty by moving the white clips out so that you could just see the connectors- havent tried this yet)
or maybe you just need to rehouse the processor to make sure its sloted in properly.
Of course it could be the motherboard but I sent mine back for testing and it has come back to me unchanged....
PLease let me know if you fix this, and I'll do the same.
I take it you havent even got as far as POSTing or CMOS yet...?

  • MacPro a1186 won't power up. Trickle Power Only

MacPro a1186 won't power up. when pressing the serv_diag botton, i only get one yellow light (indicating trickle power). the final diagnosis from the service source manual (sections are included below) is less clear to me. if i only get trickle power to the logic board, and the power connections check out, is it the power supply or logic board failure? could it be something else?
    Power Supply Verification
To power on, the computer’s logic board requires “trickle” power. If the system fails to power on, first reset the SMC as described in this chapter. If the computer still doesn’t power on, follow the procedure outlined below to determine whether the issue is related to the power supply.
    Verify trickle power
Diagnostic LED 2 indicates the presence of trickle power required by the logic board to begin the startup process.
LED 2 should be yellow when the DIAG_ LED button is pressed, indicating that trickle voltage is present.
Verify Power Supply Is Providing Power
Diagnostic LED 8 indicates that the main power is OK and within regulation.
Plug in AC power cord, and press the power-on button on the front panel.
LED 8 should be green when the DIAG_ LED button is pressed, indicating that the main power is OK and within regulation.
If diagnostic LED 5 and LED 6 are both solidly illuminated at power up, improperly seated power supply cables could be one cause of this behavior. Check all power supply cable connections to ensure they are properly seated.
    Startup Failures
Power-on LED does not illuminate when power button is pressed, fans do not spin, and there is no boot tone or video
Verify power outlet is good. 1.
Check that diagnostic LED 2 is on when the power cord is connected.2.
    Replace power cord. 3.
Check that diagnostic LED 2 is on when the power cord is connected.4.
Reset the logic board. Refer to “5. Resetting the Logic Board” in this chapter.
Verify power supply cables are fully connected. 6.
Mac Pro (Early 2008) Troubleshooting — Symptom Charts 165
Verify that processors are properly seated. Check diagnostic LED 3 and/or LED 4. 7.
Verify that processors’ mounting clamps are properly tightened. 8.
Test whether the front panel board or power button is at fault. Remove the installed front 9. panel board and test with a known-good front panel board.
    Replace front panel board. 10.
    Replace power button. 11.
    Replace power supply. 12.
    Replace logic board.

Are there updates or solutions to this problem trin1? Seems that front panel board, power supply or logic board are all possibilities.

  • T60p Won't "Power Up", but LED's working.

My laptop is refusing to power up, after having gone into Standby mode.
The usual method of pressing the "Fn" key to re-activate the machine simply killed the LED's.  The machine then became completely unresponsive, needing the battery and power to be disconnected then reconnected before any AC-Status LED would ignite.
It is connected to the mains and the "socket" and "battery" LED's are lit.
Pressing the power button simply extinguishes the LED's (including the AC supply indicator).
Once this happens, the only way to get the LED's to come on again is, once more, to remove the battery, then connect the power supply, before re-attaching the battery.
This has happened a couple of times before, but persistant attempts have previously succeeding in getting computer to start.  I leave the machine running habitually to prevent this problem from occurring usually, but I closed the lid while a guest was using the spare room.
The OS has been reporting a fault with the battery, but the machine should be able to start with no battery connected, so I'm not convinced that a replacement would solve the issue.
I'm frankly tired of expensive on-going issues with this laptop: particularly recurrent CPU fan failures and hopeless battery longevity.  I'd be ready to get rid of it, but I do need to run a HDD backup.  Due to outrageous cost, I'm loathe to send this back to Lenovo.
Very grateful for any advice on getting the thing to power up.

i've seen a lot of laptops not start up because of a bad battery.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro suddenly says no space available on start-up disk (plenty available) and USB drawing too much power (only charging phone). What's going on with my computer? No longer able to charge my iPhone 5.

    Hi, all.
Two days ago I was using my computer, a 2011 Macbook Pro, and suddenly got the error message reading "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using. Closing windows and removing files from your startup disk will also help."
I was only using Google Chrome, nothing was running in the background, and I have 443 of 449.25 GB available (this is after clean-up I conducted after receiving the error message, but probably cleaned up less than 25 GB), so there should be no shortage of space. However, the message kept popping up and I deleted a few files and eventually it went away and hasn't reappeared.
However, last night and then again this morning I have been getting the error message that my USB drive is pulling too much power and has been disable. All that was plugged in was my iPhone 5 on the charger and my computer is also on its charger, so I don't know why this would be an issue, either. I have always charged my phone this way and never had a problem until today.
I haven't been able to charge my phone since. What's going on with my computer?
