G5 not seeing firewire hard drive on restart all of a sudden?

Recently I noticed my G5 not seeing my external 400GB fire drive after a restart or boot up. It has been connected since January and has not had this problem before. The only way it sees it is if I turn the drive off and on again, then it pops up on the desktop. Is there a preference somewhere that may have been turned off or on for this? If not, what do I need to do so that it sees it all the time? Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I had a FireWire external case that became flakey on me. It was a really cheap one, so I guess I got what I paid for.
Symptoms are similar, though not exact. It would sometimes take 10 or more minutes for it to mount to the desktop after a startup (sometimes it would never mount). If I let it spin down during use, it would not spin back up upon attempted access. If it spun down during use, I'd start getting the +beach ball+ until I yanked it out without ejecting; it would not eject off desktop because it would not spin back up. I got the warning message about not ejecting first, but the beach ball went away immediately. It wasn't the drive inside, since it worked when I put it into another case later.
I've read some negative reports recently about Western Digital external drives and problems working with Macs. I think I also read about a firmware upgrade for their external drive (can't remember positively). You may want to look at their support web page.
If you had another external FireWire drive or another Mac to plug that drive into, you could do some more conclusive tests to see if it's the Mac or the drive causing the problem.
Personally, I avoid buying external drives made by companies that cater to Windows users. Western Digital makes excellent drive mechanisms; most of my current drives are WD. However, I wouldn't buy an external drive enclosure from WD, Seagate, or Maxtor. I think they have Windows-centric features that interfere when operating with Macs. I now choose external drive enclosures from Mac-oriented companies like OWC, LaCie, MacAlly, G-Drive, and some others.

  • Imac will not see my hard drive on start up, wants to start from network start up disk that does not exist. How to get rid of it? So there is just one choice / my hard drive.

I have a Intel duo Imac. Everything has been running relatively smoothly for a few years now. All of a sudden my computer will not start. I get the flashing folder with a question mark.
When I go to Start up disk in my system perfernces while the computer is on. I see 2 possible choices. One is my hard drive with the operating system shown. The other is a non-existant Network Start up disk with a question mark in it ( looks like a hard drive with a question mark and it say's its a "network start up disk).
All I think I want to do is get rid of the Network startup with the question mark. I can not find anywhere how one can just remove an old or non existant start up disk without reformatting.
I believe this came from a clients hard drive who had a network system on it. We no longer have that drive. It no longer exists. But a latent icon shows up in start up disk.
When I go to change the start up disk. I can change it to either the hard drive or the network with the question mark. But when I select my hard drive and then got to restart the computer. I get the flashing folder with a question mark on start up. I have also seen the flashing globe a couple times.
When I attempt to run disk utility from may install disk ( holding down "C" on start-up ). Disk utility does not see my hard drive. Just the Apple install disk with the disk utility on it.
What can I do to remedy this short of re-installing? Will a program like Disk Warrior or Tech Tool help?

Thank you. That's what I thought will need to happen.
One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know?  It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks.

  • IBook G4 not seeing the Hard Drive

My iBook G4 does not see the hard drive. When the computer turns on I get the flashing smiley face in the folder. When I put the disk for the computer in then the computer starts up but cannot see the hard drive so I cannot get into anything. I even put the computer in safe mode to see if I could get it to work and I couldn't. I had a friend who works on computers look at it and he said I needed a new hard drive. So I changed out the hard drive and the computer worked fine for 3 days and then it did the same thing. I'm not sure if there's a problem with the logic board or really what is wrong with it. Please help

This seems to suggest that your HDD may not be the problem. Try the old HDD you removed by putting it in a firewire enclosure and connect it to the computer and see if you can boot the computer from it. I experienced a similar issue with a iBook G4 which is detailed in the thread Could it be the logic board?. Your issue may be different, but the thread may give you some ideas for troubleshooting.

  • T42 will not see 160gbSamsung hard drive in bios - solid green light no apparent activity

I bought a 160 gb Samsung HM160HC for my T42 to upgrade and do a clean install. When I power on the laptop the green hard drive light stays solid. No activity at all and I do not hear any activity from the drive. The bios is 3.23 which is last one for the t42 in 2007. It is also not recognized in the bios setup screen in the startup menu, but the original 40gb shows up fine when I put it back in with the windows XP pro on it and boots up.
I also get a media test failure code: pxe-e61 to check cable on boot agent base code (ba1217bc) screen during boot up and of course "operating system not found" since it can't see a hard drive. Even when I load windows for the install it cannot find a source drive to install to.
Any ideas what is wrong. thinking I got a bad drive I ordered another one and it does the same thing. I have tried them in both of my t42 laptops with the same problem. Hard to believe I got 2 lemons but it does happen. Any known problems trying to use this drive in the T42 that you might be aware of, it was recommended by some other users when I was researching for a drive to buy for the upgrade.
    Thanks,
    Al

It never hurts to go over the basics:
    a) Make sure that all the pins are straight and no jumpers present.
    b) Secure the drive face down in the caddy with all four screws.
    c) Gently but firmly push it in all the way, applying the pressure to the HD cover, and then secure the cover with the screw as well.
    Any progress?
Well, do I feel like a dummy. The original HD was secured with only 2 screws so I only put the 2 of them back in since it worked fine for it before, It slid in and seemed to make the connection, no bent pins or anything, no jumpers, etc. just no action either ..LOL, WRONG!!!!! I build computers as a hobby so I went to my assortment of screws and put 2 more to secure it at all corners. HELLO.. works like a charm. I was so frustrated I just couldn't see it or didn't think that 2 scews could be the problem since it work fine like that before. Lesson learned and I know better than to cut corners in computer assembly.
So thanks for pointing out the obvious that I couldn't see. BUT... another issue that you might be able to help with.
I upgraded the HD sine the other one was only 12 gb and I was maxed out and I had been having windows XP Pro freeze up for no apparent reason, sometimes while I was using it other times I would come back and it was just unresponsive and I would have to hard restart it by powering it off. Thjought it was the sleep mode or hibernate mode glitching at first, then thought the hard drive might be getting to full and glitching or had a bad sector or sectors causing the problem.
Well I decided to go with Win 7 since most of the other computers on our home network are win 7 just to be compatible. I don't need the Aero features so that is not an issue for me. Well it is still freezing up, happened while I was updating Win 7 for IE 9. JUST FROZE. no response. Had to power it off to get it to work, just like before. Any Ideas, could it be in the BIOS? It is the last update from IBM 3.23. I also could never get the pointer mouse to work before which would be noce, kept telling me it was turned off in the bios...mouse pad works fine just can't activate the pointer control from the control box but I could never find or figure out in the bios what was wrong. Not sure if the two problems  are related or not.
So you thinkd reflashing the bios would help? I went in and checked the connections tothe motherboard when I upgraded the ram, just o be sure they were not loose or not counnected securely. Everything seemed to be fine but no pointer activity either and still frezzing up.
Direction to go and what to start looking for. start with the basics again i guess. I have 2 t42's and the other one works fine no glitches and  the pointer works on it with no problem.

  • AirPort Extreme does not see printer, hard drive, AirPort Express!

I just got an AirPort Extreme (802.11n), to replace my AirPort Express. I have a Brother 665CW wireless all-in-one printer, which had worked perfectly but now I cannot find it. I have also hooked my USB hard drive into the Extreme. I can see the hard drive in the AirPort Utility, but I don't know how to find it from my iBook. I'd also like to put the Express in another room to use the AirTunes feature. Unfortunately, almost nothing is working!
Here is how it's set up:
    Den:
    AirPort Extreme - hardwired to:
    - DSL modem
    - hard drive (via USB)
    Brother 665CW (wireless)
    Living Room:
    AirPort Express
Advice would be appreciated. I'm usually able to troubleshoot my problems, but documentation on this Extreme is really bad! Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I had problems adding Airport expresses using Airport Utility. However I found it worked fine if I used the manual set-up option and not the Assist me option.
Reset the airport express then, in manual set-up, set the express to 'join an airport network' add the airport network password and see if that works

  • E3000 not seeing usb hard drive

have installed the latest firmware and my e3000 is not seeing my external drive at all. when i plug in a usb stick, it recognizes it fine.
it's a 1tb wd internal drive inside of an enclosure . my pc recognizes it fine when plugged in through the usb enclosure. it is formatted ntfs. the drive is being accessed because I can see the indicator lights on the enclosure flashing, but nothing is showing up in the router configuration page.

it other drives work here then its local to the WD drive.
yes i know i know you mentioned it works in a PC, that still does not mean the enclosure is good. the controller board in the enclosure could not be in agreement with the latest firmware.
can you reflash to the previous firmware to test? this for sure would rule out the drives enclosure/controller board...

  • Installer not seeing my hard drive

    Hi all,
I'm running the VM installer on a new machine. The machine has a 750Gig SATA hard drive on it.
It's not detecting the hard drive.
I'm assuming I need some kind of driver for this.
Do I download an .rpm package for this?
How do I apply the driver during the boot/installation process?
    Thanks
    John

    Hi,
According to the specs from HP on my machine, the machine has the following motherboard:
    * Motherboard manufacturer's name: ASUS M2N78-LA
    * HP/Compaq name: Viola-GL8E
According to the site where I purchased the machine, the motherboard uses the chipset:
    Chipset NVIDIA GeForce 8200 Chipset
Just for giggles, last night, I downloaded OpenSUSE 11 and installed it. The installation went flawlessly. I would like to experiment with Oracle VM though.
I would also like to report that both Oracle VM 2.1.2 and the latest version of ORacle Enterprise linux have the same problem of not detecting my SATA hard drive.

  • G5 not seeing second hard drive

I installed a 300Gb Western Digital hard drive in the second bay of my G5. Unfortunately my G5 doesn't appear to see it in any way shape or form. I tested the drive in an external caddy and it mounted just fine via Firewire. I've heard this has been an issue before with G5's has anyone managed to find a solution?
    ADi

Look at the jumper settings, maybe it got shipped with SSC enabled (Spread Spectrum Clocking). Now I'm not sure, but I think the G5's SATA controller is not compatible with that. You either need to disable it (if it's on) or you can boot the HD off a PCi controller card. I would check the jumpers and make sure the power and data connectors are securely fastened. On the WD drives they usually ship with no jumper or the jumper is installed backwards as a storage setting (not being used) on the very far right. To make things easier just pull the jumper off then try booting again.

    Hi Evanh,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are having a problem getting your second 'base' hard drive working after upgrading to Windows 8.1. I will try my best to help you with this issue.
I recommend Testing a Hard Disk from the BIOS, I would like to know if you can see it and or if it has been corrupted or damaged.
Please let me know the results.
Thank you and have a great day!

  • My time capsule does not see external hard drive

I just got a new time capsule and am hoping to use it as a wireless bridge and NAS.
I've got it set up as a bridge and that seems to be working correctly, but when I plug my external hard drive into the time capsule, I can't see that external drive show up anywhere.
Has anybody else run into this issue?
The hard drive is a WD Elements 3 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive - WDBAAU0030HBK-NESN.

I can't see that external drive show up anywhere.
If the drive is formatted correctly and communicating with the Time Capsule, then it will be displayed when you open AirPort Utility, click on the Time Capsule icon, click Edit, and then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window. Example:
Remember that since this drive is a "network" drive, it will not be displayed on the desktop until you manually mount the drive.

If anyone konws how to help let me know please and thank you.

Agree with baltwo, though even if you have saved the install app I wouldn't use it unless its been used to install a known good copy of the OS already.
In your case, that probably means start fresh:
Restart the computer, holding down 'command' and 'r'. When the recovery disk window shows, choose 'Reinstall Mac OS X'.

I have an ex-hard drive connected to my iMac with an alias of it inside my movies folder. Front Row on this computer sees this alias and its content no problems.
This is my problem. I have another iMac on the network connect to my computer via Front Row. This computer can see the content of my movies folder but not the alias to the ex-hard drive.
Does anybody have an solutions to this ?

Hi BillDoor, i hink you have to make an alias on your second imac
or make an alias from the first imac movie folder and put that in the moviefolder from the second imac

  • I just upgraded to iMovie 10.0.1, latest release and need to move my projects and events to an external attached hard drive.  i do not see any hard drive icons in this release.  How do I do this?

I just upgraded to OSX Mavericks and also the lastest release of iMovie.  The version says 10.0.1, but is it the latest release as of 10/14/2013.  I need to free up disc space on my iMac hard drive and move the contents of iMovie libraries to an attached external drive already functioning on my system.  I need to move both events and projects and keep all intact and related.  I have seen disc drives in the previous version of iMovie, but I do not in this one.  How do I move these items? I am in desperate need for disc space.

You can create a brand new Library under File Menu>Open Library>New...
Create the new library on the external hard drive. Then drag all the Events/Projects folders into that Library. Close the Library, quit iMovie 10.x. Now test the new Library by opening iMovie again and see that all the Events/Projects are there in the New Library. You can now safely delete or close the exisitng Library file as those are now duplicates of the real Library sitting on the external hard drive.
Another way to do this is find the exisitng Library file, and simply drag it to the external hard drive in the Mac Finder (disk to disk copy of the Library file, by drag and dropping). Then go back into iMovie, File Menu>Open Library>Other... then naivgate out to the external hard drive and choose the Library you moved within the Finder.
The new iMovie 10.x is much more friendly to use the Finder to run and gun and move stuff at will. It used to be the case the Library file had to be completely managed within iMovie and doing Finder copies would break them. Now it's more flexible in that it works the way most people used to think it should work (doing drag and drop in the Finder)
