G5 now extremely slow - please help

I have a 3 year old IMAC G5 PowerPC that up until 2 weeks ago ran like a charm. It's now slow to a crawl during any sort of tasks. There was nothing installed or upgraded to this computer that could have caused this. So far this is what I have done to try to correct this problem ... not much but a few things. I ran SMART UTILITY .. and my HD failed the test so I thought for sure this was the culprit. Went out the next day and baught a new 500Gb drive, installed FRESH copy of TIGER on it and prayed. There was no change in speed whatsoever .. it actually seemed even slower than before. The only thing left that I can think of is possibly bad ram or worse a motherboard issue ... but woudnt the computer simly not boot up or give me errors if this was the case?
Please help .. I cant afford to take it to the APPLE store, hoping anyone have any suggestions or think they know what could be the problem here. I payed like $2000 for this 3 years ago and hate to have to throw it on the curb for garbage pickup.

I do not know how to test my ram .. what I was going to do was ask around and test it with someone else's ram .. is there a way to check it beacuse I don't know?
The hardrive did show bad sectors but I installed a new one, tested it - all fine but that didnt help the crawl. Also do not know what your asking me or heard of that CD that tests hardware , where would I find this?

  • Apple TV Extremely Slow - Please Help

    I just received an Apple TV for Christmas and this is my first Apple product that I have ever been disappointed with. It's EXTREMELY SLOW! I am using it wirelessly through my Time Capsule and I have a pretty fast DSL connection. I also have a Roku box and a BluRay DVD player that has internet services as well like VuDu and NetFlix. Movies start almost instantly on all of my devices and play flawlessly except the Apple TV. Movies on Apple TV take about 5 to 8 minutes to start versus only just a few seconds on my Roku box and instantly using VuDu. Is this normal or do I have a defective unit?

    I own a iMac with 802.11 N WiFi With Airport Extreme I also use an iPhone 3GS WiFi G and have recently Purchased an Apple TV I can never get my Apple TV to hit rate speed of 72 or higher. I have tried everything My iMac hits rate speeds of 270 sometimes Using 802.11 N while my apple TV only hit 72 at the highest even My iPhone 3GS hit speeds of 58 to 60 with WiFi G. I have noticed that even if I set up a separate Network using the 5Ghz of the Airport Extreme I get even lower speeds like down to 38 to 40 on my Apple TV I realy dont have a lot of problems downloading movies per say but there have been times were I have had to wait like 20 min just to watch a 720p video from youtube or Movie Trailer. I can go from my TV to my computer using the same network and get the movie downloaded a lot faster using my computer???? What is going on Apple???? I really enjoy Apple products but I have to say I am somewhat unsatisfied with the Apple TV....What am I doing wrong??? I have tried to move my Airport extreme right next to Apple TV and with no speakers or anything around and I never get higher that 72 or so I Want to know is my iMac Airport Extreme Just reading it wrong or What... Please Help Apple????

    OK, thanks. First, open Disk Utility and the Repair Disk Permissions on your internal HD. You can find DU in Applications - Utilitie.     I have downloaded all IP changer Privacy software I have purchased and am trying to install it, and although it is made to work with WindowsME that I am currently using on my computer, it now says it requires Firefox 3 or above to be able to install the software. Therefore, I am trying to update my Firefox to current 3.6 but once Firefox 3.6 downloads it doesn't install. Instead I just keep getting the same error message: Setup has caused an error in SETUP.EXE. Set up will now close. Several times, I have also tried restarting the computer as the error message also recommended But I just still keep getting the same error message when I try to update/install Firefox 3.5.     Firefox 2.0.0.20 is the last ever version of Firefox for Win98 / SE / ME.
    You can get it from here, but you are better off using K-Meleon (derived from Firefox) or Opera instead an old version of Firefox:

    You can try KernelEx to get Firefox 3+ to work, but it would be very slow with an old PC of less than 750Mhz. 3.5 and later supposedly doesn't work.

    When changing ISPs (or networking equipment) it's always a good idea to start from "scratch" in configuring your equipment.
    I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
    Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
    While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
    After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
    Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
    Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
    In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

    Just as the title says , no response from any buttons or touch screen ....held power button down after waiting 10 mins and phone shut off . Restarted phone and extremly slow !!!!!....opens apps very slowly , web pages take longer to open ....and so on
    Anyone have this issue....????

    The best way to restart your phone and clear the cache of any nastiness is, and always will be, to do a battery pull.  I suggest you remove your battery while your phone is powered on then replace it.
    Give it a try and post back with your results.

    Yesterday I was on the computer on Facebook, then I spilled a juice over the keyboard. I turned it off and let it sit there, then I turned it on and it took about 3 minutes to show the Log in screen, then I logged in and it was taking long to load the stuff in my desktop and it was being really slow for everything.
    Please Help!
    I got it on December, and I don't have much time with it!! I really need to fix it.

    You are in Recovery Mode. Follow the instructions below to recover your iPad.
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
    If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
    3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button.
    5. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
    Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad. Data will be lost.

  • Installed Windows on second HD (SSD), now extremely slow

    I put my new SSD in the main hard drive slow and installed Windows 7. Then put it in the optical drive spot and put the original drive in it's place.
    Now when I boot into Windows 7 it takes about 10 minutes and when it finally loads it freezes every few minutes.
    Any suggestion?
    Is there another way to install Windows? I want to have my OSX on original drive and Windows on second SSD.

    I believe it's 2011 Macbook Pro.
    I opened Bootcamp assistant and created Windows USB. Then it recognized that I have a second internal drive and I clicked continue. It created BOOTCAMP partition on SSD and restarted but went nowhere.
    Then I read online that certain Macs don't boot off USB. So I put my SSD drive in the main hd slot and put the optical drive back. Then I booted through Windows 7 install CD and installed Windows on SSD. Everything seemed to be fine and I was able to boot to Windows.
    I took the optical drive out, put SSD in its place and put the original HD back to original spot.
    Now I am able to see Windows and OSX through REFIT and can boot into Windows but it is extremely slow and always freezes. I actually think that OSX became slower too.
    Not sure if this was the correct way to install it so any suggestions are welcome.
    BTW the SSD drive is brand new, so I highly doubt that it has issue.

  • My PC won't find my airport extreme.  Please help so I can access external hard drive and printers and internet.

    airport extreme (newest version)  has external HD connected and two printers.  everything works fine from my MBP.  My PC on the other hand wont even access the internet while connected to airport via ethernet.  Please help me.

    Sorry I don't really understand.... there are no partitions on the drive.  How do I repartition it?
    And should I use "erasing free space" or "erase" for wiping clean my drive of everything?  Erase seems to be faster last tiem I tried.

    I just flashed my Neo 2 865PE to 1.4 and now it wont boot!
    On my bracket on the back the top right one is red rest are green..

    Get 1.3 from the website if that's what your board came with originally. If it's not, get the one that came with your board. The reason I say that is that is, at least for me, the flashing program says there is a Bootblock Mismatch with all other bios' except what came with my motherboard.  ?(
    Make that backup disk and remane that bios file for your board to AMIBOOT.ROM. and have it in.
    Unplug your power. Take out your RAM. Clear the Cmos via the jumper, I believe it's JBAT1. Put your RAM back in. Then power up. Maybe have someone turn on the power while you hold down the Ctrl + Home Key. You really have to be fast. When you get your floppy, the board will read from it and restore your bios - then beep 4 times. It will then reboot. If you're lucky, all will be ok and you can go in and reset your settings in the Cmos.
    I want to make this suggestion to anyone who flashes their bios': Have that backup disk in while you flash. If the flash goes bad, when you hit the reset button, immediately the boot block will hunt for that AMIBOOT.ROM file. If you shut down your power with the power button, your system won't power back up. You will swear it's dead. You won't get it back until you unplug your power cord, clear your cmos, reset your RAM, power back on and IMMEDIATELY hold down the Ctrl + Home Key. I really don't know what is going wrong with these bios releases, but for some boards, they appear to kill the board. I'm convinced that I will never be able to use any other bios but 1.3. There is a glitch in the chip evidently. With the bios that came programmed on the chip, you can, seemingly, get your board back. At least, that's been true for me.    
    Just keep trying. I believe you can get your board back. The boards are really nice but really finicky.

  • Mac OS Mountain Lion 10.8.3 suddenly became extremely slow, need help!

    Hi everybody!
    I need help with my Mac OS Mountain Lion.
    Was working fine with it since it got released, but yesterday suddenly it became exteremely slow. It literally thinks for 20 minutes on any operation I'm trying to do, showing me the loading spin icon. Screen freezes, everything is not responsive at all and I just have to wait for ages till something is moved a bit and then it thinks again.
    I don't see anything in particular in the logs. CPU load is low, memory using is low, all temperatures are fine. I even cleaned up the stuff with CleanMyMac app, didn't help.
    Checked the hard drive with Disk Utility - didn't help either.
    Please help, I'm hopeless and out of ideas what's wrong with it.

    First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing, regardless of SMART status or anything else.
    There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
    If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
    Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
    Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
    Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
    Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
    Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
    Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
    Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
    Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
    If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
    Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    I downgraded from windows 8 To windows 7. now nothing want to work.I knew I shouldn't but i like windows 7 more.it logs into Windows 7 but from there i can't do anything it doesn't want to respond to a mouse a usb or a portable dvd rom.and the worst of all I can't access the Internet it seems like the windows 7 has noadapter drivers so i know that i have to install intel drivers but i can't access anything so i don't know how to do this please help
