G5 OS 10.4.11 - kernal panic - won't start

Computer working fine then suddenly get a log-in screen saying User: Other?
restart - doesn't restart or get to login screen only apple on grey screen
Start - in safe mode
Panic - unable to find driver for the platfoem PowerMac 7.2 ....Darwin 8.11.0.. Root xnu 792,24 17 - release - ppc
panic - we are hanging here
Tried fscf -fd
hangs at catalogue file
disk 0.3 I/O error Invalid node structure

Does not repair
Any thoughts? I have two partitions on the disk - one for the OS and one for my files
How can I access my disk? Can a firewire external link work using my powerbook to acces the PowerMac as a disk?

Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Kernal panic/ won't boot from hard drive or installation disc/ error type 1

Friends PowerBook seems to be dying or is possibly dead.
    PowerBook G4 model A1138 or M9969LL/A:
    15 inch/ 1.67 ... http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBookG4_15-inch_Double-LayerSD.html
K, so my friend's powerbook is in my possession... and not booting.
A week ago, upon booting the laptop, he'd get the old OS9 looking folder flashing with THE happy face and then a question mark. Then, usually, it'd boot. It started taking longer and longer to boot, so he backed up all his stuff. It eventually stopped booting OSx (10.4.10) and came to me asking about how to reinstall Tiger.
As of right now his machine will NOT boot from the hard drive, regularly or in safe mode.
When we try the install CD, we get a kernal panic. It hangs, then tells us to restart. Every time.
Holding down "alt" I tried the hardware diagnostic/ repair thingy from the install disc. It mentions a quick issue with finding Gineva fonts or something and then gives the following errors:
    type 1346978644 error 1
    type 1346978644 error 1
Invalid memory access at %SRR0:00000000 %SRR1:00083030
Thats about all we got. We are looking for a screw driver to try and remove a stick of ram and see if thats the problem. Any ideas? Hoping for a bad stick of ram or hard drive. Anyone know if for sure the logic board is dead or if there is a way to fix it? Appreciate any feedback. Happy to give more information if you need it!
    ~joel

When you did the boot off the original system disk was anything non-Apple externally connected? If not, then you clearly have a hardware problem, and your idea of examining the RAM is not half a bad idea. The only thing you might want to do before that is zapping the PRAM. Sometimes that clears issues such as you describe:
    1. First determine if your machine is under 4 years old. If it is, then go ahead
and do step 2. Otherwise do step 3.
    2. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    3. Take it to an authorized service center to have the clock battery replaced. That may cause the very issues you described.

  • New MBP: Kernal Panic on 2nd start-up

No third-party apps have been installed on this thing yet. Opened it up, went through registration process, software update and the subsequent restart. closed the machine after browsing the web for 5 min. This morning, instead of waking up, I get the start-up tone followed by black screen. After a force shutdown/restart, it freezes. On the next attempt to restart, it starts up but gives the message below. Is this a sign of a dud machine or should I not be worried? Any advice on preventing future occurances of this?

Hi, I'm having a similar problem, I have had my macbook pro since late jan, not long after getting it back home to the uk as I bought it in the us I started having kernal panics, spoke to the apple care team they told me to archive and install and check permissions to no avail, spoke to them again to day and the guy just said to re-install os x, don't really want to be doing that as I don't feel it will make any difference, have been reading on a few discussions and thought i would see if you could help, it seems tp happen when I am using skype or Ichat, I've been in contact with skype and they advised me to reinstall but there shouldn't have been a problem anyway and is not something that they have had reported, since re-installing there seems to be no problems but this was only this afternoon, I'm running os x with all the latest updates, and have no unusual third party software could someone please take a look at my panic log and see if they can help, thanks : )

    2. re: "Restart message..." You are describing the following message:
    That indicates a kernel panic.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.

  • Help! Kernal panic won't let my Macbook Pro boot up... Any advice?

During regular start up the computer freezes with an error log in the background and a "Please restart your computer" message in 4 or 5 languages in front of it. I found the panic log finally so, here's the code. Any advice would be very greatly appreciated!

The Mac OS X kernel does not tend to panic in that way. But you are not running the Mac OS X kernel, because you have modified it with these add-ons:
    org.voodoo.driver.VoodooHDA          2.7.2
    at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch          3932
    com.kext.HDAEnabler          1.0.0d1
... and the panic occurred in the voodoo driver, whatever that is. I think you need to contact the developer.

    Hi Scott Mosher!
I have an article here for you that will help you troubleshoot this issue with kernel panics:
    OS X: About kernel panics
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3742
See the section toward the bottom of the article labeled “Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic,” but keep in mind this statement in that section:
Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you would like to avoid this process, or do not know how to perform any of the following steps, consider bringing the Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance. Be sure to ask that, if the drive needs reformatting or replacing, they contact you about escalating your case to a special data recovery service. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!
    Cheers,
    Braden

I tried taking out the RAM that I purchased a long time ago and also the RAM that came with my computer, but it still wouldn't start up. Is there anything I can do besides an archive and install?

It sounds as if you are trying to run an OS on a system it wasn't built for. I assume you have the original discs that came with your machine - Try an Archive and install, but see if you can backup your data first - if you have another machine you could use Target Disk Mode.
Please let me know what happens,
    Miriam

  • Kernal Panic At Startup

HI i have a MBP and go to college for the last week i have been getting the Kernal Panic at the start up while at school but when i went home and nothing was pluged into my computer it started up fine. so when i got back to school i started try to start up with pluging 1 thing out to try to find out what was causing the Kernal Panic. it seemes like that either my printer pluged in by USB or my Power cord are causing them would that make any sense.
    Thanks for all the help

if they can't resolve it via
phone, have them send it in for repair.
Which would not resolve anything if it is an invalid driver being used for the printer. It would be returned as no toruble found, yet your printer would continue to cause the issue at home.
if that doesn't resolve it, it could be a hardware issue.
back up your hard drive and request a new machine.
Apple will not replace your macbook simply because a third party peripheral device causes a kernel panic.
you should be stressed nor should you be tasked with
    troubleshooting a $2,000 laptop that's no more than a
    few months old.
Actually yes, computer maintenance and upkeep does fall to the owner. Making sure all software, firmware, and drivers are up to date is your responsibility, and one should never expect Apple to be able to remedy any situations that arise when these are neglected.
Best solution is to download all software and firmware updates for the computer, and make sure your drivers for your printer are up to date as well. If the issue occurs when no peripheral devices are attached but on the AC power, I would advise testing the computer with a known good adapter (this can be done at an apple store or authorized service provider.)

  • IMac 2008 won't move past apple logo after kernal panics

HELP!  My iMac has become quite the problem child.  It's early 2008, and in 2011 the hard drive crashed...now I'm getting a stream of kernal panics.  I thought it was insufficient memory so after I finally got it to boot up after a kernal panic - I cleared out a bunch of videos and freed up like 75% of my 500GB drive.  SO I thought I was in the clear...then the screen saver came on and apparently that triggered something and it locked up.  Did a reboot and got another panic.  I've tried command + R to go into recovery mode and it won't get that far - not even sure if command + R will work on the early 2008.  I am running Lion, not sure exactly what version since it won't power up.
My husband is ready to be done with apple altogether but I'm not ready to part yet.  Anyone have any ideas?

OH and I tried to run the Apple Protection CD and it just spits it out.  The only thing I have plugged in is the power cord and the keyboard.

  • Macbook pro has had many kernal panics now won't even start

I've read the phrases kernal panic and failing gpu. I stating getting these a few months back. They have been happening in clusters. Now after closing the book it won't start at all and it feels hot. Its gotten hop in the past when apparently it kept going after I closed it but this is the first time it won't start up again for about a half hour now after I opened it up.
This has a solid state drive so its not a disk problem.

That does not mean it can't be a SSD issue.

  • Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD

Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Jon

Is your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper.

  • Powerbook won't wake up from sleep, trouble rebooting, kernal panic

    Hi,
My powerbook has recently been having some troubles. This started over the weekend and nothing major has changed recently. I added some new RAM months ago, but that was like in June maybe, and it was Samsung module which i think is what that line of powerbooks used originally. The computer had been exhibiting signs of sluggishness and slow operation which i was mostly attributing to a pretty full HD that was in need of some optimazation and maintenance (which i do semi-regularly with Tech Tool Pro).
So, when it goes to sleep, or when the lid gets closed, it won't wake back up. black screen and unresponsive to any keys, though i can still hear the fans and some HD spinning noises inside. So, this forces me to force shutdown by holding the power key until i hear the machine turn off. Then reboot. When re-booting i have been getting a combination of kernal panics and freezes on startup, just hanging with a blue screen and a spinning startup indicator.
I can boot with no problem from an external Firewire drive. So i've run a ful Tech Tool sweep of the machine, optimized the HD and all that. Then, all is well UNTIL it goes to sleep again and then i'm back in the same cycle.
    Any thoughts or advice here?

Yeah. I guess i am going to take it in this week. in the meantime though, i wonder if anyone can translate this panic.log entry from another round of kernal panics that i just went through this morning. I had about 4 or 5 of them in a row after trying to reset my PRAM to try and fix an issue with my external isight.

  • Cd won't eject and kernal panics: what does it mean?

I've been getting kernal panics from time to time recently, and just last night a burned DVD refused to mount, show up in Disk Utility, or eject. i tried rebooting with the mouse down with no effect, and then i tried option-apple-O-F'ing and typing "eject CD," but it told me "can't OPEN the EJECT drive." is there anything i can do to get the DVD out? i'm out of warranty and apple care at this point.
The drive still makes noises on bootup, so at least the power is connected correctly. But I just checked System Profiler, and under Disc Burning it says, "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly." Does this just mean that the drive somehow got disconnected? Would it be worth my while to open the computer up and make sure the connection is tight?

you'd be wasting your time; its so tight in there that the optical has no place to go.

I have got 8gb RAM, 4gb stock and 4gb i bought second-hand. If it is this RAM that is causing the trouble i will replace it asap.
Anyone any idea what the problem might be?

All three programs are possible cultprits. Uninstall them all, see if the KPs stop, then reinstall them one by one to see which is the cause. (May be more than one.)
You can temporarily uninstall them, one by one, using this command in Terminal in Applications>Utilities. That way you won't actually have to uninstall the entire program. You will need to find the exact name of the .kexts by navigating to /System/Library/Extensions. Observe case and all spaces as written in the example, below. You will need to unload all four vmware.kexts.
    sudo kextunload path to file.kext/
    To reload
    sudo kextload path to file.kext/
    Here is an example.
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo command, you will get a warning. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see typed on the screen and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded/loaded. Then just close the window.
