Panic Kernal: You need to restart your computer, Help please...
Yesterday I installed an update on my MacBook and everything went haywire. I installed the Apple updates
that were recommended for my computer when it did it's weekly update
check. After the install I quit all open applications and did a
restart per the on screen prompt. Finder closed and the computer just
sat for over a half hour and never would finish shutting down. No key
strokes or commands would do anything. As a last ditch effort I held
the power key down until it shut down. I waited a minute then powered
back up. The gray screen with the apple logo comes up then the spinning wheel. Then a
panic kernal saying the computer needs to be restarted. I tried ten
times then I reset the PRAM then I did two hardware checks. First the
short check then the long one. Both tests showed all hardware to be
fine. Then I called Apple. They told me to reset the PRAM, told me to
do a hardware check then told me to boot in safe mode. Then told me to
try an archive reinstall by inserting disc one, power on, then hold
the C key after the startup chime sounds. One of two things happen
when this is done, it either goes to a blank blue screen or the "You
need to restart the computer" message comes up. If I power on with the
disc in and hold the option key the hard drive and the disc shows on
the screen. If I click on the hard drive the "restart message comes up. If I
click on the disc the blank blue screen usually comes up but twice the
"restart" message came up. I have tried all of the start-up key strokes, Once I got into safe mode but I can't get into it anymore, it now gives the you need to restart message. I can get into Verbose and Single user mode but I don't know of anything to try once I'm in either of those modes.I tried to boot system from single user mode by typing in the command sh /etc/rc but a long list of code just comes up and says something about the panic kernal which I believe is telling me that the same problem
I have trying a normal boot is keeping it from booting in single user mode also. I can do a hardware test(I've done this 3 times and everything shows to be OK). The main problem I have now is it won't boot normally and it won't boot from the install disc so I am truly stuck. I am at a loss as to what I should try next
since I can't even reinstall the software. Any help will be greatly
appreciated especially since my free phone help ended 2 days ago and
today was the first time I ever needed it!!
thanks, JasonThanks for replying, I have no peripherals attached, I am booting from the MacBook Tiger DVD one that came with the machine. I get the panic kernal with or without the disc installed. All hardware checks out fine in the three hardware checks I've done. I am almost positive the problem is stemming from the Apple updates performed since this is exactly when my problems began(trying to restart after the Apple updates). I just can't get the machine to boot from the disc no matter what I try so I can reinstall the operating system. I even tried using an external DVD-ROM once to see if it would boot from it but it did the exact same thing as when I try booting from the internal drive. Yes my files are backed up to an external hard drive. I've got no problem doing a Nuke and Repave if I must but since it won't boot from the disc I don't know how I can even do this. I know it is under warranty but since the hard ware checks OK it looks like there would be a way to get it running again without sending it in for repairs. However I am starting to think that's what I'm gonna have to do. I'm just glad I still have an old clamshell iBook to work with so I can access the internet to seek help. Thanks for your input, can you think of anything else I could try?

PANIC KERNAL!!!
Hello,
I have a Power Mac G4 Mirror Drive Doors. I keep getting Panic Kernals. I have tried everything from reformatting the boot volume ,Disk Warrior reinstalling the OS and I even called the Geek Squad to come out what a mistake that was!
Man that crap is such a gimmick. They just ran some hardware scans on everything and everything checked out except for a video card that might be past its prime. So I have ordered a new video card and will wait until that arrives then I could trouble shoot even more. Has anyone ever had this problem?? also if a LEVEL 5 guy could help me out that would be swell.Do everything, in order, in Dr.Smokes Resolving Kernel Panics and don't leave out any steps.
Quote from Dr.Smoke "My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein"
Here's more at a brody's KP site.
Cheers!

Panic kernal attack when upgrading OS
The last 4 times I have attempted to update from Lion to Mountain Lon and 1 try on Mavericks, I have gotten a panic kernal attack on the initial reboot. I then have to rebuild my Mac from Lion. Apple support has been unable to help me and I really don't want to do a complete clean install. The last time there must have been some damage of some type done as my MacBook Pro now runs quite slow even after Disk & Permissions were checked and corrected. Can anyone give me some help on this? I am currently at 10.7.5 on 2.53Ghz Intel Core i5 with 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory.
Boot with the D key and run the hardware test.
You should backup your data before upgrading anything. Once backed up we can isolate your problem further. -
Panic Kernal... is all lost?
So I am getting the classic Panic Kernal Screen that tells me I must restart my computer. I have done so many times, however, I cannot get it past the startup gray screen with the white apple. I have looked at all trouble shooting ideas in forums and on the web and they all say to boot from the start-up disc and do an archived re-install. I have tried holding down "C", and holding down "X" and also holding down "OPTN" and still it locks up and tells me to re-start. is there another way to boot from the disc and re-install OS 10.4?
Thanks so much!HI Eric,
When you hold down the C key are you booting from your install disk?
*"is there another way to boot from the disc and re-install OS 10.4?"*
Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5: About installation options
You can try booting from your Tiger disk and do an erase and install.
Try booting with only the keyboard and mouse connected. Disconnect any other peripherals.
Try booting in Safe Mode

Help! G3 freaking out/kernel panic/memory problems
Hi All,
I put some pc 133 512 mb memory in my G3 [which is actually pc 100, but supposedly should work fine] and then it kernel paniced.
Now it mostly seems to recognize memory in the slot closest to the screen. But only 64 and 32 mb sticks.
Plus, it only boots to OS9 which is on a seperate partition to OSX which is where it is supposed to go, even after setting OSX as the startup.
It also always wants the time adjusted- perhaps the battery is flat- I put it all aside for a month after it happened.
Could the 512 MB pc 133 have fried something? It seems very fragile.
Safe start just keeps rebooting, and X on startup is ignored and os 9 starts.
HELP!!!
Any ideas gratefully received,
WumpsdadHey annexit,
Yes I get a lot of donated computers so I have probably 80 or so sticks of RAM around here mostly PC 100 and 133 out of both PCs and Macs. I'm constantly sorting through them and marking them: "Works w/ iMac G3, Kernal panic in iMac G4, Works in tower G4 Sawtooth, not recognized...etc."
..old G3 iMac 500 Mhz with one 128 and one 256 PC133 (probably scammed from a G4 tower when I upgraded that),
Was planning to replace the 128 with a 512 PC100 - I saw the post from spudnuty
If you look here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac/G3450MHz_500MHz_600MHz700MHz
OWC sells a mix of PC 100 and 133 for that machine. They are very good at taking it back if it doesn't work.
Is your G4 Tower still on your net?
running panther, safari crashing and I can't print to the attached printer from the intel laptops wirelessly..
Hmm that should work. I use a MDD G4 Tower as my workhorse and am able to print to it no problem. It's running Leopard now however but I don't remember a problem when it was running Tiger.
Running Panther could be your problem. I was lucky when I bought an iMac G4 for $50 (bad hard drive) in the bottom of the box was a complete set of Tiger CD installers (rare).

Panic Kernel problem on older Imac
Hi Folks,
I have recently, (the last week) been getting kernal panic messages everytime my system is run. I have 10.7.5 running on a early or mid 2009 Imac 24.
As far as I recall, we have not updated anything or added anything in the last week to cause any changes. I have been doing some research about these panics but I thought I would post my lastest log here, to see if anyone here sees anything obvious.
so...

I have no updates pending, except an itunes one, so I have just updated that but not restarted and have not had a panic since, but I expect one, we'll see. They come randomly. If the computer just sits, or if you are working on nothing in particular. Ill post the crashlog incase theres something else too. from a few days ago it seems.

JonyvoidEndian, or better yet bit-endian yields a clue to what may be happening. You could have some old PowerPC code that is giving Lion a headache. It has no Rosetta to deal with it. Thus, if you used Migration/Setup Assistant to import data from a pre-2006 Mac, you may have basically given this iMac a real headache trying to understand old drivers or applications. Instead it would have been better to erase and install 10.7, and then use this tip.
It sounds like also you may have a bluetooth storage device it is accessing that it might not have a driver for.
Is your data backed up from prior to the panics? -
IPod touch (4th generation) panic.list problem
iPod Touch 4gen started having panic.plist error reports in diagnostics and also preformed a self-reboot when in the middle of watching a video
(kernel abort type 4)Try:
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Next connect to iTunes and update via iTunes. Others have had the same problem. -
I have a macbook pro late 2008 model and I tried updating my IOS with a downloaded(not purchased) copy and now I have a constant Kernel problem. I purchased IOS 10.6 from Apple and I was hoping installing a proper version of an IOS would fix it but it did not. here is a copy of the kernel code I get when it starts up. can anyone help me with this problem.

This extension is for OS X hacks, which I'll assume is what you are running. You need to return the system to its normal default if it is truly a Mac and not a hackintosh. If it is a hackintosh, then we cannot help you.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

I have a dual 2.5 GHz powerPC G5 and have been getting kernal errors. I started getting them while still being in Mac OS 10.3. I followed all past recommendations like upgrading to current OS, running all the tests, checking RAM, yadda, yadda, yadda.
They will happen anytime, doesn't matter what program I am using.
Sometimes my mac will just freeze with the fans running high. I have checked internal temps and all seem normal.
Here is a copy of the last kernal crash thing that was sent to Apple.
Hopefully someone can help me figure out the source. Thanks!!!

Took it to Micro Anvika, and they did some extensive testing (my own tests came back FINE, just like yours). Unfortunately, they stated that at least one processor was fried (and possibly the logic board).
I had high running fans and KP's. Had the odd KP in Panther (10.3) and Tiger (10.4), but it really started to go haywire with Leopard. Hope your outcome is a little better than mine. -
Hi,
I've just bought a re-furbed mac book pro (2GHz, 512Mb) and I can't start OS X 10.4.9, i get the same error message
'panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0039BC83): unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"' and then a series of code.
Worked OK when I first started up, issue started when I selected software update. Followed the instructions on the firmware update and restarted as prompted.
I've only used if for about a day and I've run out out of options, I've tried the following:
Start in safe mode: Doesn't seem to work, still get through to the same error message.
Reset the the PRAM: no difference
Pressed command + S after launch: still get through to same error message
Hold down c at start up and boot from OS X Dvd: no difference, still get through to same error message.
Are there any options to re-install from the install CD (retail version)
Error message comes on after the Grey apple icon appears and then freezes about 2 seconds later.
ThanksWelcome to Apple Discussions!
What probably happened is that you either installed some PowerPC drivers on there, or are booting off a PowerPC disk. Neither is supported. So if you used the migration assistent to import from PowerPC, backup your data off target disk mode:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
to another Mac using the principles shown here:
http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1872713
And then reimport only that data known to work with your MacBook Pro after erasing and restoring from the system restore disks that came with the MacBook Pro.
If your MacBook Pro didn't come with restore disks, ask the seller to provide them.
If the seller doesn't have them, ask them to contact AppleCare to get them. They are not his to keep, and belong to the machine, and are the only things that can boot them, other than a clone backup, or a disk utility written for Intel Macs such as Techtool Pro 4.5, or Disk Warrior 4.0. -
Hi my macbook came up with this, please help!

It look as if you had Parallels Desktop installed at one time, but - somehow - tried to delete all of it, but didn't succeed.
That's not the current version of the Parallels virtual sound kext, anyway.

Feb 15, 2015, 10:19:12 PM Self test - passed
Feb 14, 2015, 06:05:00 PM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/mdworker_2015-02-14-180500_[re dacted].crash
Feb 14, 2015, 04:35:07 PM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/garcon_2015-02-14-163507_[reda cted].crash1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

Kernal Panic Cost Me Money and No Cure
Hi All
There is a history to this problem and so I will try and set it out so it is easy to read:
Macbook Pro Unibody Late 2008 and early 2009. 2.4 Ghz, 4 gig ram upgraeded from 2 gb in 2009 and woked fine since. Did have OSX 10.5.8
1. For a few months in 2012 I had a problem where I kept getting a kernal panic on boot up BUT I lived with it as I could do a PRAM reset or remove battery and put back in and usuallly worked
2. Late 2012 - problem becoming very frequent and so I run lots of diagnostics online hardware test and everything listed on previous posts......no obvious problem
3. In December I decided to get an SSD and installed this however still getting intermitant problem afer initail success
4. After I had tested without I added old hardrive to dvd bay and still intermitant problem but no chnge from when without adding old harddrive
5. I took to a shop to sure it
6. They said they could not find problem but then fixed the chip [suspicious as to what fixed I think they just installed lion] and installed Lion and working but that they had disabled the old drive and said my warranty would tun out if i reconnected - now I am confident that nothing to do with my old drive.
7. I got it back after paying over £100 and looked like it was working at first.
8. I reconnected mu old hard drive and still working no problem
9. I installed live and still working ok
10. I had bought a apple super drive for loading dvds etc and tried to connect - no success - but the guy at the shop said he had connected a dvd drive no problem
11. After a bit oif reseach i discovered that apple in their wisdom disable apple super drvie from macbook pro that origianally had an internel dvd
12. I opened up /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist and chaned to:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>mbasd=1</string>
</dict>
</plist>
basically add the mbasd=1 into the <string>
Now this worked fine but when I first tried to do it I struggled as there is no password set on my mac the guy at shop removed and so i had to add it - this caused a kernal panic at first but then it was ok again
13. I loaded Logic Pro from my super drive
14. Not work initially so download updates etc
15. Logic works great
16. At some point it sarted getting kernal panics again and getting as bad as before
17. I disconnect my old har drive and still getting kernal problems
18. Safe mode has worked a couple of times and once just hung with spinning thing
19. I probably need to get my money back from the guy who tried to fix it but more importantly - I would prefer to get another 2 years out of this macbook pro rather than having to buy a new one or even switching windows etc...
I have so kernal paics below - if anyone could shed any light I would be very gratefull as I have spent far too much time and money on trying to rescue this macbook pro.

com.apple.kext.AppleMatch 1.0.0d1Do a search of this forum for "Problems with Seagate 750GB XT series drive". There is a long thread on users of 2009 MBPs that had many problems with that series drive Until they Replaced the drive cable. Other have posted to that thread with the exact model number of the Updated cable.
It can be found online at places like iFixit.com and maybe OWC, macsales.com.
Funny part about that thread is there was more then one user that kept sending the Seagate drives back to Seagate as defective, Many of them, over and over and that just can't happen. I always contended that it was not a drive problem but a Computer problem. After the original poster, and others that were having the same problems, replaced the cable they never had another problem. -
Kernal Panic Airport?/Bluetooth to blame?/Wifi?
Hi, i have already asked this question before on the hardware forum however as it seems more like a kernal problem i thought i might as well post it in here and see what the community thinks.
I had a kernal panic error code which caused the problem mainly after i installed the latest Mac OSX updates to itunes and airport. i disabled the wifi and since then i have gotten the following message.
